Re: [ilugd] ExpEyes experiment design contest for students

2012-10-07 Thread Pramode C.E
Hello Raj,

You know, this sounds like a really cool initiative. I don't remember
anything about physics, but the samples shown on the web look
 interesting.

Sorry for the late response ... somehow I missed this mail :(

Yes, ExpEyes can do a lot of interesting things ... and it is also perhaps
one of
the very few open hardware initiatives from India.

I wouldn't mind owning one of those things.

There is a page on the website with a list of vendors - you may be able to
purchase
from one of them!

I was only able to find one (non-definitive) link on the 'net about its
hardware licence, though -- any place that is documented?

I will check this out with Ajith, the main developer of the device.

All the best with the contest, and do give us the highlights once it's
 completed.

Thank you; will post updates once the contest is over!

regards,
pramode

Have snipped much of your reply, but thank you very much.
This is exactly the sort of feedback that I was looking for,
and meshes in very well with my initial thoughts.

Could you explain further what FSMK is, and how we could
 benefit from their expertise?

Glad that the reply was useful.
FSMK or Free Software movement Karnataka[1] is a non profit organization
trying to spread free software ideas to people from all parts of society
mainly in Karnataka. We do not have any permanent employees and the
volunteers are mainly either software professionals, academicians or
students in colleges. Community center is one chapter of FSMK where we try
to reach students from less privileged part of the society and teach them
to use computers completely on free software. Some more info about it here,
[2],[3].

Regarding LTSP in particular, it was one experiment that tried to utilize
few old donated systems while starting a new community center at FSMK's
office. I had tried it myself with the help of few others and hence I can
help you with whatever I learnt while implementing it. Apart from little
configuration tweaking for network setup, LTSP itself is very easy to
setup. This guide[4] is very good and explanatory.

Considering replies from others in this thread, it will be interesting to
setup LTSP based cluster with thin client being powered by Raspberry Pi. It
will make the whole setup very compact. However one problem with Raspberry
Pi in such setup is that if something in it gets faulty, I dont think it
can be repaired. But again considering the low cost of raspberry pi, you
can still try it out.

Raspberry pi - can be purchased off Amazon.com

However, while you do that - AND I KNOW THIS IS NOT ANDROID forums - you
may want to try, Android PC - $50-$80 with Wifi, HDMI (or vga) output, usb
port... this takes about 4W power. and has 1.5Ghz dual core CPU + MALI GPU.

I have heard, people have ported linux on this - ubuntu, bu the android
works pretty much off the shelf.

You can buy this off, Dealextreme (dx.com) or ebay.in.

This IMHO would be your best/closest bet.

 Thanks, Saurabh.

Solar-powered computers sound interesting, and I
know people in other contexts who would jump at
these, and will promote these to them.

For this particular project, I will need to look at the
 costs of the solar-powered computer.

Thanks, also for your offer of a secure construction,
but reasonable buildings already exist in the school,
and that is not an immediate issue.

Does Thinvent have a presence in Orissa?

 Gora
