[ilugd] [OT][crosspost]India's First Freedom Toaster Released

2008-09-01 Thread Anoop John
Dear All,

GNU/Linux users group, Trivandrum (www.ilug-tvm.org) and Zyxware
Technologies are conducting a 5 day install fest at
Technopark,Trivandrum, primarily targeting the IT professionals
working at Technopark. This 5 day mega install fest is being conducted
at Park Center, Technopark, Trivandrum from September 1-5. With this
event we at GNU/Linux users group, Trivandrum, hope to carry the
message of Free Software aggressively to one of the largest IT parks
in the country.

We have also released India's first Freedom Toaster during the
inauguration of this Install fest. This Freedomtoaster was designed
and developed by Zyxware Technologies and is being jointly promoted
with GNU/Linux Users Group Trivandrum. You can read more about it and
check out available resources and photos at www.freedomtoaster.in.

The whole concept was based on the original Freedomtoaster developed
by the Shuttleworth Foundation. A Freedom Toaster is basically a self
contained kiosk that will burn any one of the free software
distributions onto user supplied optical media. The freedom toaster
serves as an easy way to distribute free software(mainly GNU/Linux
distributions). Such a dispensing mechanism is highly relevant in a
country like India where unlimited broadband internet is not exactly
cheap, whereas the chief source of free software remains the internet.
The freedom toaster intends to bridge that gap and thus make free and
open source software easily accessible to the public, minimal human
intervention being an added advantage.

Along with the install fest we are also conducting a technical seminar
series on various Free Software topics. Also visitors will have the
opportunity to try out different GNU/Linux distributions and also many
software including popular Free Software games. There will also be
opportunities for visitors to get their questions regarding free
software applications answered by experts. Kerala State IT Mission,
SPACE Kerala and FSF India are the other partner organizations who are
behind this and BSNL is sponsoring the event. Together, we have been
successful in organizing similar events in the city this year.

We hope that, the event and our freedom toaster initiative will get
support from all like minded people all over the country and hopefully
this will become an inspiration for other people to take the
initiative and further strengthen the free software movement in our
country. You can read more about the install fest at www.ilug-tvm.org.
We also welcome you to join our mailing list -
[EMAIL PROTECTED] - and help us out with the increasing
support requests

Cheers

Thanks Sudhanwa for the review. We at ilug-tvm are also planning to
conduct the Mandriva Install fest in June. We had contacted them and
told them about our plans. Is ilugd planning to do anything? I think
if different lugs organize events in tandem and reach out to the media
at the same time we will be able to get enough attention from the
media. We had conducted a distro-neutral Install fest in April and it
was a reasonably good success in terms of reach to the public directly
and indirectly through the media.

[ilugd] Binary Compatibility between distros

2008-04-11 Thread Anoop John
I had a request recently from a firm in Trivandrum to try to set up
their software (Altair Hyperworks) on RHEL 3. I took fedora, assuming
that if it worked on RHEL it would on fedora too, and with some minor
tweaks in the installation script I was able to set it up on Fedora 8.
So the question is, if a software (binary) works on a given distro,
would it work on other distros too? If there are dependancies will we
be able to figure them out without having access to the source?

Thanks

Ubuntu - for Beginners.

Try out the live CD and check if everything works out of the box. If
there is something that does not work, check out solutions to the
problem on ubuntuforums.org. You can even try out the solution while
using in the Live CD (unless of course if you need a reboot). Once you
make sure that everything is working go ahead and install Ubuntu and
enjoy. Check out www.ubuntuforums.org for support - they provide
virtually real time support for you.

Also check the firewall settings in the router. Try disabling
firewall, setup port-forwarding and test remote access. Remember to
enable firewall after testing this and then configure firewall to
allow the ssh service to access port 22 (or whichever port you want it
to access).

And if you are willing to pay for shipping and handling charges I can
send you a Ubuntu CD/DVD within a week. For that matter I can send any

That is what I asked - what if the user is willing to give up his rights for
what he gets in return :)

I am sure this is probably going to be controversial. But I have a
simple question. Before that I have to affirm that I truly believe in
the principles of Free Software and Free Knowledge.

Youtube has this EULA with a view to primariliy prevent copyright
violation suits by people who use the system as has recently happened.
Obviously they would also have plans of monetizing the content in
whatever way they can and would probably like to get possibilities of
law-suits out of the way. Companies have to go to these drastic
extremes to save themselves the trouble of fighting these people who
1) violate copyrights and lead to lawsuits 2) file lawsuits with an
objective of extorting money. If all people were perfect there
wouldn't have been any such law suits. But all people are not and
companies can't take chances like that.

Also a person who is willingly accepting the EULA as a cost for his
being able to publish his content to a much larger number of people
than he otherwise could have on his own and without bearing the cost
of server space, server maintenance and bandwidth would be in a "give
some - take some" position. He gives the right to the content and in
turn gets the
audience and saves on the cost. How is that against the FLOSS based
value system?

Companies exist to make money and they do just that. When companies
are small they can make decisions where making money may not matter or
where they can put higher priority for a value system than for making
money. But once they grow large and goes public, making money becomes
their main objective. Even the blip.tv would sooner or later come to a
stage where they have to somehow ensure that they don't fall prey to
such incidences, as those that happened for youtube, and put up
something like that in their EULA.

Maybe it was Budha's idea. Again, Jesus Christ had said something
similar. But I guess Gandhiji was the one who phrased it as such and
gave it the popularity through his attempt at the implementation of
the idea. Also he must have been the one who coined it in English
because it is attributed to him across the board. So accreditation may
not be quite wrong.

Ultimately - yes - the general user. For the fakirs - absolutely yes
:). GNU/Linux distros has almost reached a state where it works
straight out of the box for most of the common hardware. Ex: Ubuntu,
Fedora.
It is not wrong to hold on to ideology. Not everybody does that and
those who do that are very valuable contributors to the community.
People who hold fast to ideologies normally tend to be the hardest
workers too and would do anything to promote their ideologies.

> is linux intended by design to always remain out of the reach of the person
> who refuses to jump through hoops to get the hardware to work .

Like I mentioned before, it works for most hardware. But for those
that do not - there are two reasons. Primarily it is because the
hardware vendor does not release specs. The second reason is that the
hardware that are not supported tend to be not so common devices or
brands that does not have enough developer users who can spend time in
reverse engineering a driver.

I can empathize with you. I have been able to get most of the hardware
that I use and that I sell to work well with Ubuntu but for those that
I could not, I had to give up. I have not had to switch to Windows
though :).

Like I said, it was quite some time ago that I had tried Ubuntu with
RAID. I installed with the alternate install CD and set up raid during
the install itself. I did not quite remember the exact steps though
but I distinctly remember that I set up the whole thing within an
hour. I did a search on "software raid installation" in ubuntu forums
and got this

Also check this other link i got from google search on "ubuntu
software raid during installation"

I am not sure about Raid-6 though

Setting up software RAID during the installation of Ubuntu is very
easy and can be done in a few steps. I had a problem booting into the
system after the install because of a configuration issue with grub. I
did not solve the problem but I worked around it by copying the MBR on
to both hard disks. But Yes I had successfully setup Ubuntu with
software RAID and lvm. I dismantled the raid set up when I wanted more
space :) (than more redundancy)

Interesting fork-bomb - probably the shortest possible.
The ":" could have been any char usable as a variable like say "_" but
: looks neat because it is thin and is not an alphabet :)
If you do
[shell]$ :(){ echo "in background"; };
it will work. I think "&" takes out the need for the ";" as end of line

Which is the motherboard? Does it support more than 2GB? Test the new

compatibility. Check speed and CL of both the dimms to see if they are

I have been able to successfully install Ubuntu 7.10 32bit edition on

getting? Edit the boot options and take out the quiet and splash
