Re: [ilugd] DNS Reliability and link stability

2006-12-05 Thread Sameer N Ingole
Dear Anand,
Anand Shankar wrote:
 1. Is it possible to have two or more different IPs assigned to the

Yes, it is possible to have more than one A type records for a host
name. See RFC 1034.

 2. If yes, is it possible to assign different metric weights to
prioritise traffic to one link over the other and also to provide fail
over redundancy - ie if connectivity with one physical link breaks,
the traffic flows in through the other link?

Nope. According to RFC mentioned above it is clear that you cannot
assign weights/distances to multiple A records. You can however do this
for MXs.

The RFC states

--- quote from RFC 1034 5.2.1 - 1 Client-resolver interface functions ---
Under the DNS, it
translates into a request for type A RRs. Since the DNS does
not preserve the order of RRs, this function may choose to
sort the returned addresses or select the best address if
the service returns only one choice to the client. Note that
a multiple address return is recommended, but a single
address may be the only way to emulate prior HOSTS.TXT
  services.
--- quote from RFC end ---

 3. Is this facility provided by DNS Registrars/ Service Providers like
 Network Solutions etc

Can you please elaborate what exactly you want to achieve? I am quite
unclear on what you are looking for..
As for NS records, I think its a ordered list of authoritative NSs.

Someone please comment on this?

Sorry, I forgot to comment on this..
I tried Reliance.
The speed is about 5-7kbps which may touch max upto 12 kbps which is ok
for mails and surfing. For uploads and stuff like that, its quite low
but still workable when you are traveling with a laptop.

If its on windows, you can call using the card, it has handsfree socket
and a dialer software. On Linux I don't know if anybody have succeeded
calling using that card.
For voice calls you need to pay whatever charges are there for voice
calls. Its an extra feature. You don't need anything special for roaming
as far as Internet is concerned, its inherent for Reliance which also
has greater coverage.

Only trait with all these providers is they DON'T provide official
support for Linux.

Depending on your distribution of Linux, you can either install

One option is to use a totally canned solution like the one available here:

   http://contribs.org/modules/news/

The URL was mentioned some time back. Its not only qmail but also has
many other thing configured and can be managed with a web-interface.

As far as support on qmail list goes, you may find it difficult to get
support there if its some qmail module off the rack. You may also find
it difficult to add new feature to it if its a qmail module and not
installed in a standard way (which is LWQ).

I find it pretty cumbersome to maintain FCs and RHs after EOL. RHEL I is

If that file exist and you still get the same error, try

mysqld_safe and mysqld both can have this option.
Remember to give necessary rights to the directory where you will be
creating socket.
 2. run the mysqldump command under strace and see where is the command
 looking for the socket file.

You should get the answer. And by the way, /etc/my.cnf is functional even
when you are installing from the tar ball.

some discussion going-on on the FSF-Delhi list about what we can put on
sale on the FSF stall. There have been a few suggestions..

1. Selling or giving away GNU/Linux (Debian) CDs or/and DVDs.
Experienced members please suggest how many CDs we may need so we can
burn them up, any help in burning CDs is appreciated.

2. Selling T-shirts.

3. Selling GNU/books. A good suggestion. C-DAC director asked for
GNU/books to us in FOSS.IN and we didn't have them there.

4. Displaying GNU/Linux (Debian), GNU/HURD, GCC and any GNU software
that we can put on display. (Any specialists in Blender or other GNU
software?)

5. Give away FSF-India and SPACE handouts.

6. Attend visitors, answer their question related to FSF's work.

Are there any points where ILUG-D and FSF is overlapping?
Are there any areas where we can get help from ILUG-D?
(Help is needed in burning some CDs and DVDs)

Please revert.

Regards,
