IMHO, in a quest to replace Windows it has gone the Windows way by introducing malicious features like Spyware[1] in it. Whoa, let me just stop you right there for a moment. Ubuntu is the name of the whole project but also the name of some products/flavors . So this is clearly aimed towards a particular flavor. Just wanted to clarify that before proceeding. So personally I don't use it or recommend it to anyone, moreover for me Debian Release party was more of community event, to celebrate the release of a universal GNU/Linux OS which has been there for a long time, almost 20 years, with most of things taken care by volunteers while Ubuntu is more of the Canonical thing now. So IMHO I don't think we can have a release party together, for them. I strongly disagree with the statement that Ubuntu is merely `a Canonical thing now`. There are various flavors of Ubuntu like Kubuntu / Xubuntu / Lubuntu which have a strong community side attached to it. I find it offensive that you chastise the entire community for the actions of a company that is just one aspect of the whole Ubuntu ecosystem. Not taking sides, but Canonical provides alot of tools, infrastructure and manpower that allows all these flavors to come to fruition. Not to mention that alot of foundations work done in Ubuntu finds its way back into Debian. Don't want to start a Debian v/s Ubuntu debate, here because IMHO they are incomparable, with the kind of purposes for which they are developed. Neither do I, everyone is entitled to their opinions, however, it seems to me you have a very limited view of what Ubuntu is. Now that I've (hopefully) widened your view a bit, would you still be open to the idea of having a Ubuntu + Debian release party? I strongly believe that both Ubuntu and Debian need each other in order to survive and that there should be more friendly relationships between the two. Debian will not need Ubuntu to survive but Ubuntu will always need Debian. -Sudhanwa ~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~! The server will be accompanied by 2 nos of client PCs also running on Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS. 4. Search around Kohacon 2011 web archives you will definitely find a good developer. Re: [ilugd] [COMMERCIAL] ALSA hacker wanted
2. Not ALSA related, how about ditching ALSA and going with OSSv4[2] stack which is also getting fairly good support, work great and its mixer is as confusing/complex (or maybe more) as ALSA. And ofcourse it's licensed under GPLv2 and BSDL, which makes it free software as well. +1 . I also faced the same problem using Debian Squeeze, shifted to OSSv4, turned the capture ( in Debian squeeze top panel left side sound control is for sound capture control not for volume control ) to mute , turned the Digital-1 to full and everything started working fine , no hissing sound whatsoever. -- With Regards, Gaurav Paliwal http://gauravpaliwal.com ___ Ilugd mailing list Ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org http://frodo.hserus.net/mailman/listinfo/ilugd

[ilugd] Minutes of meeting (19th September)
Guys, We had a lovely crowd gathered at JNU campus and this time our localhost Andrew Sir welcomed us with a nice conference hall and some samosas to add in the flavour. We were 8 people in total and at the end whole session took a BOF form , we started with a session from Dhiraj Gaur on Open source maturity model. And it threw up some very discussion and insights on support model offered by different vendors on open source softwares. It was total fun and informative both at the same time to see the business and social opportunities in support. Dhiraj promised to repost this OSMM presentation on ILUGD mailing list for more reviews and insights. We finished off the meet with a brief discussion on freed.in and some projects for students from engineering college. After which the flagship eating ceremony happened at our JNU canteen. It was a a fun meetup with some light weight discussions thrown by. Look forward to meet everyone in next meetup. Cheers.. Re: [ilugd] Data accessed via API
On Tue, Sep 14, 2010 at 1:23 AM, Ankit Chaturvedi ankit.chaturv...@gmail.com wrote: On Mon, Sep 13, 2010 at 7:07 PM, Gaurav Mishra gauravtec...@gmail.comwrote: Guys, Lately, got this case while working on a internal project. Let's say we have a X software which provides a API so that third party apps can integrate with the existing core system and extend functionality , now we are not changing any code here but using the underlying data via API. In that case should i need to open source my modules/third party app ? (I believe SugarCRM works that way only, however wordpress recently forced users to make there plugins open source which is contradictory). The straight answer is it depends on the license of the API. Generally you'll find three popular licenses, so here's a simple explanation for these cases. LGPL: Only propagates if original source code is modified. Any derivative work is considered independent, so in your case no need to release the code. If you do modify/add the APIs then you only have to release the modified source, not your application's source. That is, no version of the library can be non-free, though programs using this library can be free. GPLv1: Technically, GPL propagates upon linking to a GPL library. So if your 3rd party software is gplv1, you will need to release your source too. There are many caveats to this, mainly concerning the definition of linking as GPL was mostly written with C in mind. Its status on partially compiled languages (such as java) or interpreted languages is unclear at best. Due to this confusion, authors usually add another 'artistic' license to their libraries which do make such a distinction and hence may contain additional clauses to the license. GPLv2: Terms state this: GNU GPL V2: 2. These requirements apply to the modified work as a whole. If identifiable sections of that work are not derived from the Program, and can be reasonably considered independent and separate works in themselves, then this License, and its terms, do not apply to those sections when you distribute them as separate works. But when you distribute the same sections as part of a whole which is a work based on the Program, the distribution of the whole must be on the terms of this License, whose permissions for other licensees extend to the entire whole, and thus to each and every part regardless of who wrote it. So in this case again the boundaries aren't very clear but it does imply that plugins/scripts etc will fall under gplv2. So in your case, if the api is gplv2 and if your app cannot function without the said api (obviously) it is deemed to be v2 and your source needs to be released. Again, many many caveats though I'm not going to list them all. So in short, read the file called LICENSE and diff with the GPL text to find out additions. Or ask the library author. Its important to note that APIs themselves cannot be licensed under any circumstances. Wordpress is GPLv2, so plugins written using wordpress api are automatically derived works and deemed GPL. Its only fair that plugin writers not make their money off wordpress author's work when they themselves aren't, right. Hope this helps. Thanks for the detailed explanation ankit. It really helped. Hi, I actually wanted to know if it is possible or not, though I tried a lot on google but didnt gt any fruitful result. What usually happens is that I have my laptop connected through ethernet and internet through MOBILE PHONE modem. That means I have two global IP's but the problem is that each application will use only the one which was acquired first. I wanted to know if it is possible to force some applicatin to use ethernet and other to use modem Like google chrome using ethernet and firefox or seamonkey with modem I actually want to open two different accounts on two different Ip's and for security reasons would not like to use proxy servers ... Re: [ilugd] Hosting a website
Hi, need of dns is that you wont be feeling much comfortable by telling your IP address to everyone. Will you be rather thn name?. Also if your IP is dynamic, lets say it changes everytime u restart your system thn ip will change too so that name u get from dyndns (name u choose to create, for ex say www.rakeshkumar.dyndns.org , you can update it repeatedly to change to point to your IP address or you can have tools to do that probably. I use HFS file server to host files on my system and that automatically updates the IP for dns server each time ip is changed.
