2006-01-18 Thread Nitin Gupta
Hello,

I am working to recover the data, i tried grep and dd method to recover the
data, i am able to recover the text of emails. is there any way, such i can
recover the complete files??? like, i am grepping to find a pattern, from that
getting the offset and then using dd on it, can i do the same but instead of
using pattern, i want to use filename.
Say i have a file called nitin.txt, so i want to recover it as a whole, is
anything possible with it??

I googled throughout the day, but didnt found any effective method? I did
tried some softwares and methods, but nothing worked out.

Hope to hear from you guys. :)

If e-mails (text only) is your primary concern I *think* the following
solution might work:

o You have run mke2fs on the corrupted partition
o I am assuming that you have not yet written any fresh data on that
partition
o Which means that your data is still on the disk but is not logically
organized in files and directories anymore
o Run the following command on the partition and sift through *large*
volumes of data to recover your mail

root# cat /dev/hda7|strings|less

Disclaimer: Please don't blame me if this doesn't work. In case it does,
just pass on the 'pocket shedding' this side :-)

Regarding usage of commands, yeah i know i made the boo boo. :(

Umm, sorry if I am stating the obvious, but maybe you should have asked
or searched Google before trying random commands. It might have been
possible to recover it even from the power failure in the middle of the fsck,
but if you have really run mke2fs, your file system has been remade, and
all your data are lost. It might be possible to recover some of it if you can
find a real Linux data recovery expert, but their services will be quite
 expensive.

Firstly it got corrupted, so i ran e2fsck on it. While it was running, my
system got restarted(power failure) and it never started back. :(
then i tried commands like tune2fs, dump2fs etc etc... and by default wrote
mke2fs :( which made it a new partition and removed all of my data.

Hope this might help.

Hello Abhay,

I am using router based VSNL Broadband from past 4 months and it is really
awesome. It has a nice speed and 99% uptime.
The router works well with FC4, no need of any software or anything for it.

I will suggest you to go for it :)

[ilugd] Year 2038

2005-11-16 Thread Nitin Gupta
Hello,

This is Nitin Gupta here, i found this very exciting BUG in all 32 bit
systems. The strange thing is FC4 doesn't allows to change the date to yr
2038. Some of you might be knowing about it, but for all others it goes as :

  The Year 2038 Problem

 Test it now...

 steps...

Disclaimer : This is just for FYI only, Please Don't try this. This
is true and if you do this then your network based applications will
 not work.

 1. login to yahoo messenger/Gaim

 2. send instant message to anyone - fine its working...

 3. now, change ur system date to 19-Jan-2038, 03:14:07 AM or above

 4. Confirm weather ur date is changed

 5. again send instant message to anyone...

 Your YM/GAIM crahes

 * * * YES ALL NETWORK BASED APPLICATION WILL NOT WORK NOW * * *

 Why.

 What is it?

Starting at GMT 03:14:07, Tuesday, January 19, 2038, It is
expected to see lots of systems around the world breaking
magnificently: satellites falling out of orbit, massive power outages
 (like the 2003 North American
blackout), hospital life support system failures, phone system
 interruptions,
banking errors, etc. One second after this critical second, many of
these systems will have wildly inaccurate date settings, producing
all kinds of unpredictable consequences. In short, many of the dire
predictions for the year 2000 are much more likely to actually occur
 in the year
2038! Consider the year 2000 just a dry run. In case you think we can
 sit
on this issue for another 30 years before addressing it, consider
 that
reports of temporal echoes of the 2038 problem are already starting
 to appear
in future date calculations for mortgages and vital statistics!

In the first month of the year 2038 C.E. many computers will
encounter a date-related bug in their operating systems and/or in the
applications they run. This can result in incorrect and wildly
 inaccurate dates being
reported by the operating system and/or applications. The effect of
 this bug
is hard to predict, because many applications are not prepared for
 the
resulting "skip" in reported time anywhere from 1901 to a "broken
 record"
 repeat of the reported

time at the second the bug occurs. Also, may make some small
adjustment to the actual time the bug expresses itself. This bug to
 cau se serious
problems on many platforms, especially Unix and Unix-like platforms,
 because
these systems will "run out of time".

 What causes it?

Time_t is a data type used by C and C++ programs to represent
dates and times internally. (Windows programmers out there might also
recognize it as the basis for the CTime and CTimeSpan classes in
 MFC.) time_t is
actually just an integer, a whole number, that counts the number of
 seconds
since January 1, 1970 at 12:00 AM Greenwich Mean Time. A time_t value
 of 0
would be 12:00:00 AM (exactly midnight) 1-Jan-1970, a time_t value of
 1
 would be 12:00:01 AM

(one second after midnight) 1-Jan-1970, etc..

some example times and their exact time_t representations:

 Date & time time_t representation

 1-Jan-1970, 12:00:00 AM GMT 0

 1-Jan-1970, 12:01:00 AM GMT 60

 1-Jan-1970, 01:00:00 AM GMT 3 600

 2-Jan-1970, 12:00:00 AM GMT 86 400

 1-Jan-1971, 12:00:00 AM GMT 31 536 000

 1-Jan-1972, 12:00:00 AM GMT 63 072 000

 1-Jan-2038, 12:00:00 AM GMT 2 145 916 800

 19-Jan-2038, 03:14:07 AM GMT 2 147 483 647

By the year 2038, the time_t representation for the current time
 will be over 2 140 000 000. And that's the problem. A modern 32-bit
 computer
stores a "signed integer" data type, such as time_t, in 32 bits. The
 first
of these bits is used for the positive/negative sign of the integer,
 while the
remaining 31 bits are used to store the number itself.

The highest number these 31 data bits can store works out to exactly 2
 147 483 647. A time_t value of this exact number, 2 147 483 647,
 represents January 19,
2038, a t 7 seconds past 3:14 AM Greenwich Mean Time. So, at
3:14:07 AM GMT on that fateful day, every time_t used in a 32-bit C
 or C++ program will
 reach its upper limit.

One second later, on 19-January-2038 at 3:14:08 AM GMT, disaster
 strikes.

When a signed integer reaches its maximum value and then gets
incremented, it wraps around to its lowest possible negative value.
This means a 32-bit signed integer, such as a time_t, set to its
 maximum value of 2 147
 483 647 and then incremented by 1, will become -2 147 483 648.
Note that "-" sign at the beginning of this large number. A time_t
 value of
 -2 147 483 648 would represent December 13, 1901 at 8:45:52 PM GMT.

So, if all goes normally, 19-January-2038 will suddenly become
13-December-1901 in every time_t across the globe, and every date
calculation based on this figure will go haywire. And it gets worse.
Most of the support functions that use the time_t data type cannot
 handle

By Hung means, very very slow. I am generally working
on 3-4 applications simulatenously including
Evolution, FireFox, BlueFish, Gaim and some other
small softwares, which i think is retty normal. It
works fine for the 60% of the day, but some times it
goes real slow, specially while fetching emails via
evolution. Another thing is that, i uses xampp on my
local system and when 2 or more users access it
simultaneously, the conditions gets worse :(

RAM, still it gets hung a number of times in a day.
I wanted to know is there any better option for us
then FC4? It should be easy as some of our team
members are fairly new to it, but still Robust and
Faster then FC4.

Waiting for your answer.

Hi,

First of all, i am sorry, as i might have hurt your
sentiments. I never said, that i want to replace the
mailing list with the forums. You just got carried on
with it.
I would like the forums to be carried on with the
mailing lists. Posting in forums is a bit easy and
exciting as it offers more features then Mailing
lists. I just came up with an offer, and thaught you
guys might like it.

P.S. : Sorry, No Offences, Just my views.

2005-07-06 Thread nitin gupta
Hello,

This is Nitin Gupta, some of you might know me.
I am a silent member of this prestigious Linux Users
Group from quiet a long time. I completely shifted to
linux on january and one of the biggest fans of linux.
I thaught of doing something for Linux and LUG-D, but
was not getting, that how i can be of some help to it.
Finally i got the idea of launching Forums for Linux
and LUG-D. I know thats not too much, but yeah, if we
guys can work together using that forum as central
point, we can definitely do something for this
comunity and AlMighty Linux.
Some of you might think that i am doing it for Repo or
hits on my website, but its not that.
I hope you guys would have a look at
http://www.xaprio.com/forums/ and would spend some of
your expensive time to register there and to help it
become a success.
I am always open for suggestions.
I hope that most of you reading it would register in

Ankur, Have a survey, before you say something, I
mentiond First Indian Web-Dev(Development) company. We
works on Designing as well using Gimp, QFlash, F4L
etc. Most of the Web-Dev companies are based on Mac
or Windows, but i hadn't heard about any company
working fully on linux. The Indian Web-Dev companies,
who uses Linux, are not in designing, while thats not
the case with us. So please have a survey before
saying something.

Right, We takes project based on Win based
applications as well, but we don't develop it in our
offices, we have a partner company, we outsource
Windows based works to them.
