FYI, GMail is not a software but a web-service. The concept of Free
Software doesn't extend to web-services yet because the Internet
 was in
its infancy in 1991 or so.

it is now 2007. Does it make any difference whether a software is
running on your machine or on a remote server? You are using the
software - obviously there is some sort of license or eula for using
even gmail? For example, using wikipedia, as far as i know, the code
is available for download. Does this make a difference? And all those
google addons to the browser, how about them? are they free or
proprietary or web-services? This is not a flame-bait, I only started
thinking about this when the OP said that gmail is 'free'.

It's still debatable whether Google is violating the GPL or not since
the GPL permits users to make private modifications and since
 Google is
not distributing the source code of GMail, it is deemed as a private
 modification.

i didnt get into the argument of whether google is violating gpl.

which free software license is gmail released under?

I never said GMail is released under a free software license. AFAIK
GMail was never distributed as a package, it is just a web service. I
said, since I do not need to install GMail on my machine I am not
bothered. It satisfies my Free Software Guidelines, in the same way it
does not satisfy yours.

Firefox is deemed non-free by Debian, while FSF thinks it is ok. The
BSD allows something while the GPL does not.

Make your own choice.

How is your comment relevant here? Why do you bother if this is the
_official_ FSF statement or not?

The Free Software philosophy existed before any useful Free Software
did, and it will remain relevant as long as non-free software exists. It
doesn't take an official statement from the FSF to understand a concept
as basic as protecting your Freedom. But then, there are some people who

What if I used an old fashioned, black, round dial phone instead of a

What if my cellphone is made up of hardwired elements and no software?

One might argue that most cellphones are embedded systems (whether or
not it is even possible to alter the software on a daily basis), but
so are most fridges these days.

client, preferably free software, where it would not be so.
