Re: [ilugd] Motherboard that supports Linux on Desktop with I5, I7 CPU

2011-11-20 Thread Rishab Arora
I've been running an ASUS P8P67 Pro with an i5 2500K with Ubuntu 11.10.
HTH. I've had a lot more issues due to my Radeon card than the mobo,
Everything ran out of the box.
But you will definitely find yourself irritated with the fact that only
Windows is able to harness everything. For instance, half the sensors will
fail to show up, and only Windows can shut off one or more of your fans on
demand. If you're box runs 24x7 that does matter.
There is a problem with suspending the session that's the same with
Windows, OS X and Linux.

 Hello List,

It is increasing becoming difficult to find a mother-board that supports
 Linux (CentOS 6, Fedora 15, Ubuntu 11) with Intel's I3, I5 and I7 CPUs.

 Probably I am missing something.

Any pointers in the right direction please ?

I bought a dh67bl with i7, for use with centos 6. Ultimately had to install
fedora 15, as rhel is not yet supporting Intel Sandybridge architecture.
Turns out, if you are putting in a separate graphics card, Linux will work
very well on this board...however, if you propose to use onboard graphics
port, only the bleeding edge distros like fedora or scientific linux will
support it.

Reason is nothing but the new Intel Sandybridge architecture, which adds
graphics (for non-high end graphic applications) to the processor.

Due to the architecture being new, the LTS or Enterprise are not yet
supporting it out of box, as the distros have not yet back-ported the
drivers.

I think centos 6.1 will be supporting sandybridge...so lots of graphics
problems will be going away.

Another problem is the onboard network card. Sometimes you need drivers for
the newer hardware and those are not yet back-ported from bleeding edge
distros.

If you are willing to use a bleeding edge distros or adding a
graphics/network card, most motherboards will work...even the new
onemost!!!not all

Drivers are the part of kernel not the distro. As per my knowledge all
distros use same kernel with some custom patches. If you want support
for latest hardware, download the latest kernel source from kernel.org
and compile it.

Earlier, they used to be in kernel, now dynamically loaded as kernel

Most of these distros are binary based, i.e., they are compiled for generic
hardware. They detect the hardware and load the appropriate driver modules.
what i am trying to say is, between the time their kernel was compiled and
now, drivers for newer hardware may have been written and to use those
drivers you need to either update your kernel via the package manager or if
that doesn't do the job then compile the latest kernel.

Vendors have mostly been slaves of M$ and idiots at that and have been
guided by standard evil marketing principles.

There are certifications for different hardware by canonical for e.g.
Fedora collects huge amount of data relating to h/w at all stages of
development, but they use a community approach.
There are firms like http://www.linux-tested.com/

How many companies do h/w certification for GNU/Linux in India?

On their website, they are not showing any tests done for any of the
mother-boards. Its mainly for complete machines and other devices.

The currently available boards of MSI, Intel, Asus etc. do not come with
Linux support mentioned. That is where the trouble lies.
I wonder if there is a quiet conspiracy/plan to close support to Linux on
commodity boards by the vendors ?
Till the time of Dual core and then Core2Duo, this was not the case.
