Well initially i wanted it to be at single location, I usually search

You have a point there about presentations, but I was also talking about
minutes. Minutes tend to be longer than lists of presentations.

[ilugd] Minutes of ILUGD October Meet at JIIT

2007-10-24 Thread Gaurav Mishra
Hi all,

The ILUG-Delhi meeting for the month of October held at
the Jaypee Institute of Information Technology , Noida at 3pm on Sun.,
21/10. Total 18 people
attended , You can see the attendance at
http://wiki.linux-delhi.org/cgi-bin/twiki/view/ILUGD/MeetingAttendance
The following items were discussed in Meeting:

1. Meeting started with Gaurav Mishra discussing State of Linux Gaming Market

o Discussion started with some interesting statistics of
PC/Linux Market and Gaming market. The data clearly shows that there
do exist a small amount of people playing games on Linux Platforms and
a lot of Floss titles are under development or Developed.

o Tribal trouble case study presents a small view of linux games
sales of a popular game tribal trouble. Along with it list of some
Open source title , Distros and method of getting them is presented.

o A overview of graphics card supported is presented along with the
community support and issues we are facing.

o The presentation is concluded with action points and a small
summary of presentation.

o Some interesting points of Education games is also raised during
the discussion.

2. Lalit Shandilya from switch prompt www.switchprompt.com presented a
very nice idea of having a FLOSS contribution site ICMS (before IDMS)
and shared some ideas with us

o There are quite a few problems that exists in Indian FLOSS
contribution arena, which he outlined in his presentation. He pointed
that there is not much guidelines available on who is contributing on
Open source, Where are they and how one can be one of them.

o He quoted lots of Social and Working problems for people not
contributing back to Open source environment.Along with that he
presented some very nice reasons why a person should contribute to
open source.

o He quoted SF project manager needing a dedicated site where he can
look up for people with specific skills.

o He presented a small prototype of the site , which will cater the
contributors and skill needed people.

o The people contributing in OSS through this site could get badges
which will help them in getting recognition

o Search option in city, companies can help people getting skill
contributors as nearly as possible.

o A lot of people arises to ask how the people will be evaluated? and
Lait has asked people to give him the suggestions.

o Advantages and disadvantages of having GNU/Linux in a resume is
discussed.

o Some more problems arised and Flames burned of tracking and
tackling with contributors in community.

o Lalit would like to have more discussion on this on list.

3. After that Varun and Angad from JIIT presented their Linux Club
proceedings over the LUG and discussed few points.

o They talked about the meetings and discussion they had in last few
months, which had some pretty healthy gatherings in their college.

o They are having near about 100 students in their Linux Club
including faculties , who regularly join the meetings.

o Also they have several DSIG`s which include a PHP SIG having nearly
270 members in it.

o They are having very good number of students involved in various
competitions like IBM TQM, Red hat Lord of code etc.

o They had a pretty solid infrastructure and pose a solid place to
hold events, seminars and workshops. Eventually we had a discussion
and a proposal from JIIT guys for Freed Satellite presentation
probably a developer track on 3rd day.

o Possibility is discussed of having a 2 day technical workshop which
will include a project dissection and assignment in 2 days.

o They had a pretty good internal mailing list, Some one from JIIT
lug is requested to post the details of their list onto ILUGD mailing
list (if it`s open for public).

4. After that we have a small brief discussion for freed.in 2008
including small feedback on freed.in 2007.

o We had a freed.in feedback session where some interesting points
have been put up by people.

o* More number of attendes should be there.

o* Volunteers number should be increased as they can also get a
chance of attending the talks.

o* A online feedback mechanism by attendes can be set up after
freed

o* Less number of tracks

o* More categorization of talks so that people with respective
interest can easily identify the talks they needed to attend.

o* Number of Voices raised for Demo section , Fun stuff ,
Something
other than talks and eventually we had a honoury volunteer for this as

o* We need more volunteers and sub-committee people for
freed.in Feb

5. Meeting was concluded with everyone appreciating the JIIT Hosts for
their wonderful samosas and tea and a wonderful place to share ideas.

Lookout for next meeting soon...

Gaurav, if you have notes for the meeting, could you please
post those. Else, please let me know, and I will post what
notes I took. I think that there were various important items
that were discussed.

From the perspective of JIIT, I think that there are some
things to consider for Freed 2008. JIIT has great facilities,
and many big colleges, and companies around it. While it
probably does not yet make sense to move the venue there, we
could think of a satellite conference there, either immediately
before, or after the main conference. JIIT folk are going to get
back to us on this, but such a satellite conference will be
developer-oriented, though initially aimed at an introductory
level over a 2-day period. We can discuss a 3-day event, where
the 3rd day is devoted to higher-level stuff, such as the
Python sub-conference that we talked so much about last year.

Gora

participation from our college of about 60 students :)

It would be great if this month's ILUG-D monthly meeting be conducted
at JIIT University, Noida. Our college has state of the art
infrastructure to facilitate such events and the FLOSS community here
would be happy if our college could become a part of such activities.

Looking forward for a positive response..

looking for a venue - the minimum requirements are

- lcd projector

With no Venue being Volunteered . The venue defaults to Sarai.

- within the normal limits of delhi and easily accessible
(DTC and all)

Yes Sarai meets all these requirements.
Sarai is at 29 Rajpur Road.
Right behind Transport Authority Office. and accessible from Civil
lines Metro station.
A not so good map can be seen here .

So where is the talk list?

cheers

Well the rules are really tight. You have to be a fun
loving creature who does not mind brickbat from the
community or should be ready to pull someones leg. If
you want ot attend just drop in and if you are
earning(making money by any means) then we would love
if you can shell out Rs50/- as voluntary contribution
to ilugd kitty.
And yes you need to love food or beer or both to
attend the meet.

 Welcome onboard.
