Re: [ilugd] Own Linux Distro

I've done LFS myself and doing that could be quite instructive. Mind you,
LFS (to the best of my knowledge) is used for building a GNU/Linux based OS
for a particular machine (architecture) only, atleast you would get best
results for that target machine (think using optimizations). I can't help
you with unattended install processes, but as others have pointed out
already, atleast Fedora/Mandriva allow the same. Check their project website
for ideas. For an easy (customizable) live CD building (with installation
support), another option could be slax [slax.org].
I personally dislike binary based distros. I'm currently using Gentoo. There
is a related project (for Gentoo only?) called SCIRE for remote
administration and possibly installation (unsure)?

[ilugd] Own Linux Distro

2007-04-04 Thread Soi, Dhruv
Hi All,
I am planning to create own Linux distribution with minimal and few custom
packages also inducing unattended installation procedure. I would be doing
it for the very first time so thought to gain some expert advice before
proceeding. I would prefer to follow either Debian platform or Redhat or may
be both.

Incase, anyone out here had good experience in achieving the same then I
would appreciate if you can share your experiences and pointers to do so. I
have been trying to google it around and encountered few links:
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/
http://www.rocklinux.org/wiki/Main_Page
http://www.gnewsense.org/Builder/HowToCreateYourOwnGNULinuxDistribution

But before I start working on any, I thought that there might be some
awesome link that I couldn't locate and you might like to share.

Thanks in advance,
Dhruv

My first question would be, why? Is there some specific need for yet
another distribution. Instead, could you just make up and use a minimal
subset of packages from an existing Linux distribution. In my opinion,
Debian derivatives have a better packaging system than Redhat-based
ones, and Debian has a larger repository than most other distributions.
Redhat does handle some things better, such as kickstart for rolling
out identical distributions across multiple machines.

Re: [ilugd] Own Linux Distro

2007-04-04 Thread Soi, Dhruv
It's not going to be a publicly available distribution so nothing to panic
about distribution flood. It would be for the sake of our internal project.
And Indeed, I would also like to work on Debian derivative. I hope this
answers your question well.

Any other advice on achieving it with lesser whys and whats involved?

Many Thanks,
Dhruv

Take a look at this : https://hosted.fedoraproject.org/projects/pungi
you can get the base Fedora tree from any of their mirrors.

Also, i think the whole intensity of debians' got the largest package
base is much diminished now, Fedora has a fairly large rpm base as
well. Not quite the size of debian/gentoo as yet, and prolly will never
be, but its still got most of the things that people really want.

Can you refrain from top posting ?

We do similar process for embedded linux, and usually start with uclinux.
In your case if the hardware is similar, then you can do lots of
customization for kernel, modules, packages etc.

This is something that is still not feasible, How are you planning to
customize the installer, Which installer you are choosing ?

I would prefer taking ubuntu as a base , Ofcourse you get access to a
very large debian/ubuntu repositry , But the plus point with ubuntu is
that there are a lot of documentation available that is ideal for
newbie

Preseeding is discussed on http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/394

FAI (fully automatic install) is another mature option. Discussed on
http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/240
