Hello Kasey,
The reason I said I thought it would belong on the G-group is because
the old iMac design line similar to the eMac was discontinued at least
a couple years when the new iMac G5s where out.
And yes it seems better in the G list because it was only ever
available in the G4 PPC CPU.
Heck it doesn't really matter too much though. I know now. Better yet
maybe 'iMac and /eMac List'?

I've been keeping an eye out for this new revelation and have yet to
find out. I'm still curious! =) The eMac (I have the 1.25 USB 2.0) is
a really nice Mac.

2009-12-03 Thread Dan Knight, LowEndMac.com
The group existed as the iMac List long before the eMac was
introduced. Rather than change the group name or create a group just
for eMacs, we added eMacs to the FAQ for the iMac List. (We've
recently done the same thing in adding Snow Leopard to our Leopard
group.)

Re: USB 2.0 Up-Grade for iMac (17--inch Flat Panel, 1GHz)

2009-12-03 Thread misterbleepy
I use the UK version of this:

http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-F5D7330-802-11g-Wireless-Ethernet/dp/B00020H1TG

to hook up my iMac 17 800MHz to my WiFi network.

It is an old device, and I'm not sure it supports the more modern
encryption standards, but maybe there are more modern versions of this
type of device available.

Does anyone know if there is any way to up-grade the iMac (17--inch

Wireless USB dongles so that I can access my Wi-Fi.

Or does anyone know of how I can connect my iMac wirelessly to my home

Re: USB 2.0 Up-Grade for iMac (17--inch Flat Panel, 1GHz)

2009-12-03 Thread Dave
You'll need an Airport card and adapter (furniture), and putting it in is
easy. You will also need the Airport software; this should be easy to find.
 Look on eBay.
There are non-Apple wireless connectors, too; take a look on eBay. They are
smaller and I know they work very well!

Well, first of all, the wireless dongles wirk just fine on USB 1.1.
I've used one on my TiBook without issues.

Secondly, just get an Airport card for the thing. Adding an airport to
one of the lampshade models is pretty easy, just pop the big metal
cover off the bottom and the airport slot is right there.

I saw some airport cards for sale on the LEM list this morning for $25.

Re: USB 1 problems?

On a related note, I am not an expert - I was told recently that I had to
retire my beloved AFGA scanner, because the USB ports on the back of my
Intel-chip IMac seem to be shorting out - every time I restart, I get the USB
overlimit message, stating the port will be deactivated - I have to unplug all
USB stuff, then restart, then plug USB stuff back in again, all USB ports act
the same when this happens. I was told this was a problem with USB 1, that USB
1 stuff seems to short out the USB ports? Is this expensive to replace these
USB ports on my IMac? I finally went with an all in one HP officejet 6500, the
wired version.

I've mixed and match lots of USB 1 and 2 devices on computers with USB 1
and 2 ports. I've occasionally run into over current warnings but never
anything that couldn't be explained by a bus powered hub or some bad
USB device.

I suspect you have one bad piece of USB hardware that's causing trouble.

It's also problem you are having a problem with your USB ports but
that's unlikely. You could try doing a PMU reset.

You can't replace the USB ports on the iMac, you'd have to replace the
whole logic board.

Re: Camera won't upload to iMac G5

for me to run 10.4.11 on my iMac G5 at home.

Me thinks you have a problem specific to your setup. I have Tiger
10.4.11 running on a G4 QuickSilver. It has Classic installed and I
have a number of old programs on it and I have no problems with it
opening with the correct application. In fact I have some real old apps
that I haven't used in years, I hadn't used them since I was using a
system running OS 9. For some of the documents I didn't realize I still
had the app installed until I double clicked on the doc and it launched
the app under Classic.

And I have also used the Change All quite successfully.

Thanks for your response and your report that Tiger works properly
with Classic on your computer. I wish I knew how to make Classic on
my iMac G5 work under Tiger as well as your G4 does.

Since writing my first message to this group, I tried the Change
All command; I only succeeded in making all of my text files created
by BBEdit Lite appear now as TextEdit files. Several years ago I
found that I could restore the Creator Application as the Opening
Application by replacing the preference file
com.apple.LaunchServices.plist with an older version of the same
file. That remedy worked again today.

Without my knowing why, the camera import problem has now
disappeared. I can now use Image Capture or iPhoto or Canon's
CameraWindow -- they all work properly. All I did was to install the
version of Mac OS X 10.4.2 (the original system that came with the
iMac G5) on a bootable external FireWire drive, and later booted up
with that drive to test the installation. I don't see how this could
have affected the system on my computer's internal HD, but it
apparently did.

So at the moment I seem to be back to where I was before I sent my
original message. I hope my system stays in good condition from now
on.

Thanks to all who made suggestions. I haven't had time, with all the
system installations, research, and attempts at repair, to read the
iMac list for the past three days, but I hope to catch up next week.
