Ashgrove salum...@gmail.com wrote: There is a caveat, though: G5 iMacs and the first couple generations of Intels suffered from display and/or graphic card problems. I've not only read about it, but seen them firsthand. I too have an iMac G5. I really like it and hope it lasts forever! According to MacTracker, the iMac G5 was brought out in three major revisions from August 2004 through October 2005, and was finally discontinued in March 2006. The first version of the iMac G5 (1.8 GHz) and probably also the second revision (2.0 Ghz) were built with defective electrolytic capacitors that caused logic-board failures within a a few years. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague for more information on these bad capacitors. (Neither of these models came with a built-in iSight camera.) I was under the impression that the third revision (2.1 GHz iSight) was not built with these bad capacitors, and thus far my computer has shown no external evidence of logic-board problems. However, the message by John Hobbs included in http://groups.google.com/group/imaclist/browse_thread/thread/ffdfb88089231079%3EiMac%20G5%20Problems points out that even these 2.1 GHz iSight models have shown failures due to faulty capacitors. In Mr. Hobbs' case, the problem appears to have been due to a sloppy job of manual replacement of capacitors at the factory before his iMac G5 was shipped out. So far I have had no reason to open my computer to look for bulging or popped capacitors; I hope I continue to have better luck than Mr. Hobbs did. Each of these three major versions of the iMac G5 seems to have been subject to minor revisions between the major ones. For example, the iLife package bundled with my machine was iLife '05, whereas some people who bought nominally the same model of iMac G5 received iLife '06 with their computer. But I don't know if my hardware is any different from what was in the machines that came with iLife '06. Re: Leopard?
I installed 10.5 on a 550Mhz G4 Powerbook with 768Mb of RAM. It runs OK, but there are some hang-ups, and you can't open a lot of apps at the same time. My advice: 1. Max out the RAM. 2. Get a better graphics card. 3. Optimize 10.5 by turning of the glass dock, and disabling Dashboard. If you do some research I think there are some other features you can turn off that will help performance. -Elliott On Sep 19, 2010, at 12:18 AM, Dave wrote: Anyone have good advice about installing 10.5 on a 450 dual-core blue and silver PowerMac? Re: Leopard?
I always thought that Apple installers run a check to ascertain if the OS software can be installed to the selected hard drive ? Just now the Leopard is being installed to a FireWired drive with a QS G4 ( 933MHz) hosting the drive. No complaints from the installer. When you say slow and performance in the same breath, i have an 8500 with a Sonnet G4 card running the Tiger via XPOSTfacto and it takes a year of Sundays to load web pages. Albeit, midi/audio applications run with no problems ( if you keep the audio plugs down to a just a few ). Re: Leopard?
Don't! You are far better off with OS 10.4.11. Simply put Leopard wasn't built for a G4 processor running less than 800MHz. I have a G4 Dual 867 and felt the performance was too slow. I'm hearing this more and more lately, and it's getting me really ticked. LEOPARD IS FASTER THAN TIGER. It includes many enhancements in speed, and the kernel is a much newer, faster version. Add to that that you get support for all the new APIs and hardware, and I'm dying to upgrade my PMG4, a 733 MHz Digital Audio! I hear the same thing about Tiger on a 366 MHz G3. It's too slow! I have Tiger on this Clamshell, and it is amazing. Of course I can't run, say, GarageBand, but I wouldn't be able to in OS 9 or Jaguar, Panther, etc. either! Also, I don't think he asked Should I Upgrade?, but he asked How Can I Upgrade? We're here to help people with what they're trying to do, not discourage using newer OSes. Re: considering a used iMac
I got a 20 inch white Intel iMac as my high school graduation gift in 2007, and it is a great computer. It runs Final Cut Express, Photoshop, and Flash extremely well, even with the low 1gb of ram that it currently has. If you can afford one, it is a great computer, and although I don't use any of the current heavy multimedia programs (Final Cut Pro, CS5, etc), it does run CS3 and other recent programs perfectly, so I imagine it can handle the most up to date versions. The Intel iMacs are great, powerful computers (but look for a Core 2 Duo, since I have heard they are better than the Core Duo in the very first model), and Columbia College Chicago, where I go to college, still uses many of these white Intel iMacs as audio/video workhorses in their Film and Video department (one of the nation's best). Since they are three years old and many people prefer the newer aluminum styling (personally I prefer the white plastic), you should be able to find a pretty good deal somewhere. I also use the Elgato EyeTV Hybrid HDTV tuner, which plays and records local HDTV along with analog composite/S video and cable (I believe the most recent version does HD cable too), and I have used it to copy some of my LaserDiscs to iTunes format. The analog video input doesn't look as good as it does on an analog TV, but it is still better than VHS quality, so that shouldn't be a problem for you. I have also heard good things about the TubeStick, but I haven't used that one.
