Frankly, I don't know, the people who recommended it to me were all
 programmers,speaking to programmers.

FWIW, I have the second edition of Hillegrass. If you don't know any
programming (specifically C), then you will find this book rather hard because
it assumes some prior knowledge of C and the language constructs. If you want
to go from a complete standstill, there are many, many C tutorials on the web,
and a raft of books on the subject (I have 'Practical C++ Programming'
published by O'Reilly, which takes you from a standing start). If you've never
programmed before, be prepared for a steep (but exciting) learning curve.

The updates are large because Mac OS X includes quite a few 3rd party
items, many open source -- eg: WebKit (Safari's underbelly), Apache
(web sharing), CUPS (printing), Gutenprint (the bazillion print
drivers). Those items are usually released as complete new blobs
(installations), not tiny incremental patches. Since the open source
community is mostly volunteers from the edu world, the bigger
releases tend to occur in late summer or early fall before school,
college, etc, grabs their time...

Ok. So there's a bug in either the OS or MLD that needs to be

That this happened during the 10.6.5 update is largely coincidental. A software

The drive was ready to go, and probably the sustained disk activity of the

headdesk headdesk

Yes. I am absolutely positive of this. No modern hard drive could ever be
damaged by a system software update. Remotely, you could have a damaged disk
directory, but that's recoverable simply be either repairing the disk directory
or reformmating the disk.

If Software Update messed up your computer and subsequent downloads of the
standalone combo updater were corrupted, you have local network problems, such
as a damaged router or ethernet interface, or some sort of problems with your
isp.

Such devices should be *disconnected* when installing Apple updates.
Having such connected can sometimes cause Apple's installer to hang
for a long time, while it's looking around for components. They can
also cause difficulties if the Mac's firmware is being updated
because that process often includes zapping the nvram -- which can
then make the Mac spend an inordinate amount of time sniffing those
peripherals during the reboot.

See Bruce's reply *10.
