I bought a refurbished 500GB G-Technology G-Drive (with Firewire 800 and USB 3.0) on eBay for $40. I then replaced the 500GB mechanical drive with my 256GB SSD. I’ll probably put the HDD in my PC laptop. The El Capitan install I had performed while the SSD was in the Iomega enclosure was unreadable, so I had to reinstall the OS. Fortunately, that went smoothly. Performance isn’t quite where I hoped it would be. The transfer rate is about 60MB/s, where I was hoping for 70+ MB/s. Boot time is only slightly faster. However, the iMac is much more responsive, and I only see the beachball once in a blue moon. Xcode launches in 6 seconds instead of 20 seconds. So I’ll chalk it up as a success. So I booted back from the CD. I checked the HD and verified that it does indeed have a blessed system folder and that the ROM 1.0 file was in the system folder. I can't see any reason for it not to boot. So I ran disc first aid, but the hard drive checked OK. Re: Intel iMac (early 2006) intermittently will not power on
Beverly Woods wrote: Hi folks, I have here an Intel iMac (20, early 2006) that appeared to be working normally, except that reportedly sometimes it took a long while of black screen to wake from sleep. I attempted to upgrade the RAM from 512 to 2G (known good RAM that works fine in another of the same machine). After I did that it would not power on at all - no light, no noise, nothing. I went back to the original RAM, it still would not power on until a lot of unplugged time had passed, and now it starts or won't start intermittently: if it starts normally it seems happy to restart after that, but once it won't start it seems to want to be left unplugged for a while or it won't start later. Also if I do anything with the RAM (try to add another chip, move the existing chip to a different slot, etc.) it won't start for quite a while after that. The 512 appears to be recognized in either slot, once I get the iMac started up, but so far I haven't had any luck booting it after installing a second chip - but of course as with all intermittent issues I am not certain if it might at some point. So, my question before I go about replacing the power supply: is there anything that could cause this issue besides a faulty power supply, especially any type of logic board failure that could cause this? (It looks to me like it would be worth replacing the power supply, but if there is a problem with the logic board that probably would not be worth replacing.) and finally. suv's should be illegal or at least require a CDL to purchase they are NOT safer, they are more dangerous I must take offense at that! I want a suv for the climate protected cargo area. But can I justify the cost of suv and insurance? No way. The last vehicle a S10 extended cab was pricey enough for me. Maybe illegal for a teenager or under 25. As to cdl, why would I want to go to truck driving school to get a cdl? --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to Low End Mac's iMac List, a group for those using G3, G4, G5, and Intel Core iMacs as well as Apple eMacs. Maybe illegal for a teenager or under 25. As to cdl, why would I want to go to truck driving school to get a cdl? why? so you could drive one So you are saying that I should buy a 1 and 1/2 ton or bigger truck to haul 10 computers in. no one WANTS any lic but if you dont have one, you are punished by the law suv are not cars, they dont handle like cars, they dont fit in traffic like cars, they dont stop like cars, they should not be licensed like cars So in other words my 1/2 or 3/4 ton (or 1 ton) pickup should have a special license also, which is what a American made suv is based on. I drove p/ups around San Francisco bay for 15+ years. I would prefer the ride, protection and view in traffic. Boy this will make a lot of senior citizens, farmers, contractors, etc upset. A p/up is hard to work out of if you have a shell on it. I suppose you also think cargo vans, conversion vans etc should have special license also. that is why there are special lic for motorcycles...DUH I have seen plenty 25+ drivers scoot their suv as if it was a compact hatchback why must you take offense? are you who I am talking about? the world was fine without suvs for many decades the escalation of car size is getting out of hand. bigger is not safer, well the suv driver will survive so at least they can be sued by the deceadants family and live to be sentanced for veh manslaughter --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to Low End Mac's iMac List, a group for those using G3, G4, G5, and Intel Core iMacs as well as Apple eMacs.
