for both read and write. The longer the tests run, the more likely you are to
find any problem areas. So don't skimp on time spent as you're not likely to
find any problem areas on the hard drive's media in 5 minutes, or possibly
even 30 minutes. I usually do a Sustained version of the read and write tests
on a smaller hard drive like yours, which takes 1-2 hours unless there are
 read/write slowdowns.

Finally, if a hard drive has passed all of the above tests, I run two more
utilities. First, with the iMac still booted into the Drive Genius 3 disk, I
select the Defrag button. Even though OS X does a pretty good job of
defragmenting files on the fly, after 7 years your hard drive is probably
pretty fragmented. DG3's Defrag feature will tell you how much and suggest
whether or not you should defrag.

Drive Genius 3 and Disk Warrior are pricey third party utilities in the $100
range, but are worth every penny for someone like me.

PowerMax, a Macintosh dealer not usually known for good prices, is selling

First of all, I do not believe that Apple ever made available OS 10.6.x (Snow

drive I have found. I purchased many others but they did not work.

This is difficult to imagine or explain. Perhaps you did not format the many
other flash drives properly.

I actually have another old iMac and I connected the two and put one on the
other but could not unlock the software and still cannot restart from a
 backup.

Some 2000 iMac models have FireWire (400) ports, in which case you can reboot
from an external FireWire hard drive. You cannot boot from external USB drives
with such old iMacs. Once again, it would be helpful if you would specify your
iMac models.

Any suggestions as to what I might try?

If it is determined that you need to reinstall OS, you can do one of the
following:

(1) Call Apple to order a copy of the original specific OS-install DVD for
your iMac. There will be a nominal charge (~ $17); it will arrive relatively
quickly within a few days.
(2) Order from the Apple Online Store a retail(universal-install) OS 10.6.x
DVD:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
I believe that they are selling 10.6.3, which should work for your iMac.

I looked for the original install discs and just realized that none came with
the computer. Is this the norm with the newer Imacs?

No. My 2011 MacBook Pro came with an OS Install DVD.

I just joined this group, because I'm pondering about getting an used Intel

I am interested in the 24 models, but I did a little Googling and it seems
 the 24 models were problematic:
 - Googling imac 24 problems gives almost 32M results
 - Typing 20 instead of 24, it gives 61M results
 - With 21.5 it gives a little over 1M
 - With 27, 14M.

Does it mean the 24 iMacs were quite troublesome?
Basing on these figures, the 24 seems the worst model, besides the 20 model
(but the 20 could have been sold way more); and the 21.5 seems the less
troublesome (or the least sold, but It doesn't seem likely).
The 21.5 model would be my second choice, if the 24 isn't much realiable
(processor speed would always be more than my G5, so it's not an issue).

Since I'm going to buy a relatively old machine, I would like to know in
advance if I'm getting into likely trouble.
I'm somehow good with hardware and troubleshooting, but opening the iMacs is
no piece of cake, so I try to avoid it as much as I can.
I heard several times about bad capacitors' fault in iMacs, but I don't know
if they happen in every iMac model or just in some.

Any info about reliability would be welcome.

As the owner of several iMacs over quite some years, I am amused by your
methodology for determining problematic models. Apple has so far sold over 40
different Intel iMac models, including 8 with 24 screens. Your generic search
results are hardly meaningful.

My current daily-use desktop Mac is a 2009 24 iMac. The screen size is
perfect for my needs. I have had no problems whatsoever with it. Just before
its AppleCare coverage expired back in July, I took it to our local Apple Store
for a thorough checkup/tuneup. They found nothing wrong with it.

and gathering data from an Oregon Scientific weather station WMR968.

 The WMR968 has a serial port (9pin)
 so I bought a serial/usb adapter.

Weather Tracker does not see the port.

In the select a port window it provides only a modem option.

Of course, this could be a WeatherTracker issue
but I haven't been able to either connect with WT via e-mail
or get authorized to post on their very low volume user forum.

 So, I'm asking here:
Are there known issues or incompatibilities with what I'm trying to
 do?
Any suggestions and all comments appreciated.

It seems that your difficulty is only incidental, and not relevant, to
the fact that you happen to conduct your project on an iMac. I
believe that you would have encountered the same situation with any
other Mac.

With respect to Weather Tracker, you are serving as a beta tester for
an unfinished product, whose company is not responsive to your
communications.

As for the Oregon Scientific WMR968 Weather Station, you may wish to
read the Amazon Customer Reviews about it:
http://www.amazon.com/Oregon-Scientific-WMR968-Complete-Weather/product-reviews/B5B0BL/ref=sr_1_1_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8showViewpoints=1

Many Amazon customers are critical of its design and quality,
especially its poor user manual. Some suggest the download of a much
more substantive user manual for an essentially identical product from
the Radio Shack website.

You did not identify the serial/usb adapter that you bought for the
project. Such devices are known to be problematic under Mac OS X. I
have had good experience with several old Keyspan adapters. The
current model USA-19HS is marketed by TrippLite:

The answers to your inquiry are detailed, complete with illustrations,

I recently ordered the new Photoshop Elements Version 6 Mac for $49.99

I do not believe that Photoshop 6 works with OS X. You have to run it
under Classic. Photoshop 7 works with both OS 9 and X.

After you specify a home Page under General Preferences, you have to
select Start with home page just above it for Startup.

If by 'canoscan u650,' you mean the CanoScan N650U scanner, have you
tried Canon's own driver/software for it, which is of course a free
