Re: Printer advice

2014-12-30 Thread Joe
I use an Epson WF-3540. It is an all-in-one printer, scanner and fax. Prints
double-sided. Has LED touch-screen. It can be wired or use wireless
networking. Has two paper trays, It has AirPrint. Very Mac friendly.
Have had it a year now and it has proven to be sturdy and high quality.

 3. LED window
 4. FAX capability doesn't matter; can do without it, actually

 Any recommendations or suggestions?

Re: G5 archive install - how to go back?

 465 G HD is showing 191 G available so 275 g on disk - I presume there is
much more on drive than just 10.5.6.
How can I find old sys files? Old sys is not offered on 'select startup

I just went through getting wifi to work (finally) on my G5 tower. After much
googling found out that 10.5.6 is very flaky when it comes to wifi so you
definitely want to be on 10.5.8. Also are you getting a failed connection
message or an invalid password message? I was originally getting failed
connection but after fiddling about I started getting invalid password. I knew
the password was correct but it just refused to accept it. Turns out I had to
allow WPA passwords on my Airport Extreme router and select WPA for passwords
on the G5 (WPA2 wouldn't work).
A couple of things people reported re upgrading to 10.5.8 - first you need to
be sure to install the 10.5.8 combo update last after other upgrades are
installed. Also I had to make the ethernet service (network settings panel)
inactive for my Airport card to work (got rid of the failed connection message
and then became invalid password, which I described above).
Now it works fine, although it is slower than ethernet, but I got rid of that
long cable :)
Hope this helps.

Re: iMac as an alarm clock?

At least on Tiger, you go to the Energy Saver preferences and then
select Schedule. It should be the same in 10.2,

Yeah, you can set it to wake/start and sleep/shut down at certain
times in the energy saver preference, just click on

you can set it. (I'm pretty sure this works the same in 10.2
 although
it might be a little different) As for logging in, if you're logged
into the computer while it went to sleep, it'll wake up and already
 be
logged in. If it's off, you'll have to turn on automatic login
 in the
Users pane, I don't see any other way to get it to log in, since it
can't run programs or anything when it's not logged in.
Umm as far as getting iTunes to play... Not sure. If 10.2 has iCal,
you can set an alarm for a few minutes after you have it start
(allowing time to start up). I haven't messed with it much, but in
iCal I'm pretty sure you can configure it to do something, perhaps
 run
a script. (I'm pretty sure Automator scripts don't work in 10.2...)
Perhaps someone here can find/write a script that would give iTunes
the Start command, and Play command. Or, if you want to set
 iTunes to
start up on login, you'd just need a Play script. I have had a
*little* bit of AppleScript experience, and I don't think it
 would be
that hard. If I have some time, I might see if I can script
 something
up that does that. (But don't count on it... I probably won't be
 able
to get it to work lol)
There are alarm clock apps, as Nestamicky suggested, but I think
 they
cost some money. You might look into something like that.
I found that just having my computer wake up in the morning woke me
up, just from the brightness, and the noise of it waking up. So you
might just see if that's enough to wake you up before you buy an
 alarm
clock, or try to find a script. (I have a white Core 2 iMac, I'm
 sure
the CRT of the G3 turning on is much louder)
 Hope that helps,

Sure you can. I'm not on my mac now so I can't walk you
 through it,
 at
least to make it startup and log you in. But go to the power
 management
panel on Preferences and you'd find it. As regards getting it to
 play,
there's Alarm Clock Pro which does a bunch of stuff, including
 running
scripts, when the alarm goes off. Others here might have
 suggestions for
a free app. I suppose someone might even guide you to an
 automator
script that may do this. I'm watching this thread to see
 responses to
 those points.

You can try the LEM Swap group, I bought two 512 mb memory sticks
(PC133 SDRAM) there to bring my G3 up to 1 gb. Prices were good. It
is very easy to add RAM, there is a trap door that opens to reveal
the two memory slots. 1gb is the maximum RAM for the G3 iMac. I
also added a DVD drive to replace the CDROM which was flaky and
upgraded to an 80gb drive which I also got from the LEMSwap group.
Now it runs Tiger well and OS9 is very fast.

Re: putting a DVD into a Ruby iMac?

2008-12-19 Thread Joe Duran
Hello ,
I replaced the CDROM in my 500mhz G3 (1 gb RAM) with a DVD/CDROM a
few months ago so it is not only possible it worked great. The swap
is pretty easy and requires just a screwdriver. Some of the screws
are rather small so it helps if the screwdriver is magnetized,
especially if you drop one in the machine :) The instructions for
opening up the iMac G3 are available online.
I used the drive to install Tiger but never tried playing a movie
until just now. In fact it's playing a movie right now. It doesn't
play in full screen but covers most of the screen, preserving the
aspect ratio of the movie format.
One thing I can tell you is I had to close most other applications to
get the DVD to play smoothly, but it is only a 4x DVD. Freeing up
CPU and memory makes the movie play much better,

With OS9 installed on your machine performance may actually be better...

Re: Help, my date and time is wrong! =(

2008-11-01 Thread Joe Duran

sounds like your time zone is wrong... I had the same issue but
changing the time zone took care of it. Click on the time up in the
top right hand corner, select Open Time Date and then make sure
you have selected the closest city to you and it should adjust
accordingly (after you select Update Now...).

Hope that helps!

If your clock is off every time you power off and back on, then your
PRAM battery is most likely dead. This is relevant to an older
machine. I just replaced my battery and now the time stays dead on
and my computer doesn't think it's 1970!
