Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger System Requirements: 
PowerPC G3 or later, built-in FireWire, 256 MB of RAM, and 3.0 GB of hard 
disk space
--Get as much RAM as you can.

It's not recommended you use the Safari browser shipped with 10.4. 
Specifically, it does not support all the latest W3 standards and has 
potential security issues. There are no browsers that continue to support 
10.4 except one, TenFourFox, it's based on Mozilla 
http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/.

With this browser I would feel comfortable suggesting the machine for web 
browsing and email and some vintage gaming.

This was a marvelous machine back in the day but you might find browsing 
slow, even with a fast internet connection. Also, I couldn't tell you 
offhand if this machine has WIFI built in as it was an optional purchase 
but it does have ethernet.

If you abandon the idea of using the computer, please put it up for auction 
and sell it with as many of the original items as you have, including the 
original box. It can go for a decent price if it is well kept. It's 
certainly a collectors item now but does remain a useful and fun computer 
with a gorgeous design.

Happy Day - I found and bought a copy of Mac OS X 10.4 RETAIL yesterday so 
end of problems cloning etc Just a few days wait for it to arrive. The 
price was very reasonable for UK where Mac bitys tend to be far more costly 
than in USA for example.

So, time off for good behaviour ;-) Ill paint the fence!  (one more non 
working iMac to work on, but with one running Im less worried about surgery 
- the iMac, not me, yet ;-)

little gems. I cringe when I read dismissive comments about them. But
then--I am a collector. And maybe that is where they belong--in a

The current version isn't but there is a version that is, I used CCC a bunch

First the bad news - CCC : (the authors tell me) is not compat with 10.3.9 
:-(

However I have found a copy of "MacOSX10.4.Universal.pkg" on my 10.5 
Disks.

I have copied the pkg to my Fash memory card which goes on a USB card 
reader and has made transferring progs to the iMac.

Can I copy it from there to the iMac or should I transfer it to a CD or DVD 
on my firewire ext Drive OR should I use the 10.5 Disks to update the OS? 

Will I need more memory?

Your advices welcome as ever!

You can connect the iMac in FW target mode (pretty certain it should work…boot 
the iMac while holding down the ’T’ key. if it comes up with a large bouncing 
Firewire icon on screen target mode is supported.) Then plug it into the Pismo, 
and use Disk Utility to do a ‘Restore’ with the Pismo drive as the source and 
the iMac drive as the target. This will clone the Pismo drive to the iMac. 
Since OS X is a monolithic system the iMac should work.

Alternatively you can use a program like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to do 
it, but Disk utility is free :-).

I have spent the last few weeks working on my iMac Flower Power G3 so much 
of your advice has been followed here too! Thanks

However, did anyone caution (I couldnt see it) that to go from OS 9 to X 
you need to upgrade te firmware! otherwise it may simply die and not boot 
(I have one of those too!) 

Since I have a Pismo G3 Powerbook which I have had for some years I had 
already been the RAM upgrade, OS upgrade (to 10.4.11) and tried several 
Browsers - yes - Ten4Fox is an option but if oyu have an older version of 
Safari that will work too. I am playing with using Mail too since the 
browser route to gmail is very painful.

So I have done most of this on the iMac Flowerpower G3 600 - I cannot find 
my 10.4 Disk and am investigating how I might be able to create a dmg from 
the Pismo that would boot - I have FW and a working slot drive. I have 
found an early version of Safari for this which works pretty well too and 
upped iPhoto and iTunes to versions just above the OS X 10.3.9 I am 
currently running. My purpose is to use this machine to convert cassettes 
and LPs to MP3 and have found with lots of help early versions of Audacity 
and FinalVinyl and it happens iMic will obviate the need to rely on the 
jack sockets I will follow the monolingual and adblock approach.

Any advice always welcomebtw: I heard a wisper that when your iMac 
doesnt want to boot off the int HDD but the switch light goes on and of and 
if your PRAM battery has been replaced - TRY BOOTING FROM SYSTEM 9 CD in 
the drive or in an EXT FW Drive...it is said that sometimes it will start! 
Im going to try!

Over the years I've found a few tips and tricks to force Mac venerables to keep 
up with changes:

- Best browser to use is TenFourFox, which is Mozilla FireFox for vintage Macs.

It's only for vintage Macs, and is quite frequently updated. Current version is 
31.6  (Safari is too buggy in these older Macs.)

- Install Add-Ons: QuickTime Enabler and AdBlock Plus (these are available on

- Install Flip4Mac (Microsoft) to run Windows video.
Both QT Enabler and Flip4Mac help with video play on older Macs.
The iMac will run faster if you get rid of ads, so AdBlock Plus.

- Install and run Monolingual

It'll get rid of languages besides the one(s) you actually use, and by so doing 
it frees up a lot of disc space.

- Install and run Onyx every couple of months or so.

- Installed a larger HD if possible; this machine will probably run beautifully 
with an SSD!

There was a Shockwave plugin, but I doubt it's of any use these days.

I'm contractually obligated to refrain from making disparaging remarks about 
Adobe or its products.  That said, I'm not a fan of Web scripting plugins in 
general.  Fortunately, lack of iOS support for Flash and Silverlight means that 
information providers can't rely on them.

I've used Debian.  You should have no problem booting from an install CD, and 
the kernel support for old NewWorld Macs has been excellent.  Though you might 
have some key mapping issues, and I've had trouble with dist-upgrades.

I have used Linux distros on PPC macs before and it's been successful. 
The only gap I ever noticed was shockwave/flash. I don't think it's even 
a possibility in those OSs.


I know many people dislike flash, and think "Oh I hate flash and I don't 
need it" but you might be surprised what you miss when it's not even an 
option.


Just make sure what Linux flavor will install on your processor. I'm 
sure you can google it without too much overhead.

still sketchy but there are at least some options, from stackexchange:

The last version of OS X that will run on that machine is 10.5. If she 
goes this route, she'll face the risks of running an old, unsupported 
OS that isn't getting security updates (and the same may apply to the 
browser as well). Also, whatever RAM and CPU that machine has is not 
enough for browsing today's Web sites.


Consider installing a Linux distribution -- at least then you'll have 
up-to-date software.

This imac will run Mac OS 10 Pantber; It may run Tiger as well. However  
neither OS will run the  newer versions of Flash playerd, so graphics are slow 
or impossible to load. These programs are readily available from Low end mac 
and several other stores specializing in older Macs.

Mac OS 9.1   Mac OS ROM 7.5.1
Built in Memory 128 MB
Virtual Memory 129 MB
Apple Computer 1983-2001

So it appears to have 128 meg of system RAM.  I think the CPU is either 500 
or 600 MHz from the Apple information that I can find online.

OS 10.4 (Tiger) will work very nicely on this machine.  I installed it at a 
school where we had over 200 iMacs including a great many early Snow iMacs.  
They were the mainstay machines for students and teachers.  Safari and Mail 
worked quite well on them.  I don't recall Mozilla being a problem but I only 
briefly used it on those machines.  I don't think I ever installed an IE on 
them.

Tiger is the most recent version that can be readily or practically installed 
(Leopard, 10.5 CAN be but there is no real advantage)

That said, that vintage of Safari will be limited on some (many???) current web 
sites due to Flash and Java not being up to date.  It should work well enough 
for many sites however.

Yes and no.

In Mac OS (I mean 9 or previous), you can still use an updated browser,
Classila:
http://www.floodgap.com/software/classilla/

It's not totally equivalent to modern browsers, but it could still be good
enough for your friend.

To answer precisely, we'd need to know the processor speed and installed Ram
quantity.
In theory she could install OS X, but - depending on CPU and Ram - the
performances could be not acceptable.
(on old Macs, OS9 can run circles around OS X as a matter of speed)

Besides, most modern browsers would not likely be compatible with the old OS
X version that iMac can run.

Lastly, IMHO 10.3 was the first really useful OSX version.
10.4 was even better (and usually the last version you want to run on an old
Mac), and I didn't bother with 10.5 (slower and not much better than 10.4).
