That'd tear things for me somewhat.

I'm curious what bbs software you're interested in running...it may well have
been ported to OS X.

Also, see:https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Intel_iMac

There is no real need to go through the torturous process of installing
windows...

Ehm well I used to run baudbandit I think on my a4000.. But it's been
years. I could easily, I think, get used to new bbs software if I put
some serious effort into things and since I'm in between jobs and
writing tasks I have the time to do so. And would otherwise get a bit bored.
As to the software i'm considering.. It's called bbs100 and runs native
on linux.

From the bbs100 website:

http://www.heiho.net/bbs100/images/bbs100-macosx.jpg

It compiles under OS X perfectly fine. Straight up ./configure, make, make
install. You don't need to install Linux.

OS X is a perfectly capable Unix OS.

If you don't have the Developer tools (which includes the gcc toolchain)
installed, you need to do that first, either by installing the Developer Tools
package from your OS install disk or by downloading the latest version of XCode
from Apple's Developer site (which requires a free registration):

http://developer.apple.com/mac/

Alternatively, you can use a project like MacPorts http://www.macports.org/
which has hundreds of ports of Linux software, very easily managed. Very nice
for installing, for example, Gnome-based software without delving into
prerequisites hell.

With MacPorts you'll want to install the X11 package, which has been an
optional install in OSX since 10.3...

MacPorts doen't include bbs100, but since it doesn't need porting, I suspect
they haven't bothered.

GH,What type of Mac do you have? I have an intel dual core 2.4 ghz macbook pro with a 300 gigabyte drive interbnally and an external one terabyte. What version of Ubuntu are you installing?I am trying to install the newest one. How far have you gotten in the installation before hitting the brick wall? What about right away?I have windows xp to run the linux on through having gotten that on dvd rom and should be able to install that onto the 700 gigabyte linux xp partition. The installation of such through bootcamp with my external drive not even showing up is a pain in itself, but the to take the next step and imagine beiong able to deal with ubuntu whilst not having a clue as to how to even remotely do so from the mac side of things with pc one not working yet is staggeringly unimagineable. Are there other files on the additional drive?Next to none and it's formatted in ms dox format.Ubuntu is a fairly easy Linux operating system. From what my friends (who are more Linux-enthusiasts than I am) tell me, you might want to try installing Mint, though. It's much easier on the end-user.Whichever is attainable and runs decent bbs software should be my goal.Isaac-- You received this message because you are a member of the iMac Group, a group for those using Apple iMacs and eMacs. The list FAQ is at http://lowendmac.com/imac/list.shtml and our netiquette guide is at http://www.lowendmac.com/lists/netiquette.shtmlTo post to this group, send email to imaclist@googlegroups.comTo leave this group, send email to imaclist+unsubscr...@googlegroups.comFor more options, visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/imaclist

I'm not sure about macs, but when I've installed ubuntu on pcs you put the
ubuuntu cd in the drive, boot off the cd drive. Once it boots you should have
an install icon on the desktop. Double click that and follow the instructions.

imho ubuntu and os x are similar in terms of looks and ease of use.
