[IMail Forum] bounce mail

2008-11-06 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

We now have a few companies, two or three, who keep sending us advertisement we
do not want. It's realy low volume but eventhough they do react to
calls/e-mails, for some reason they keep sending those advertisements.
I want all mail from those companies to be bounced, not simply deleted to let
them know what we get and for them to "feel" the problem themselves. How do I
do that?

Does NOT work.
H~radiator\.open\.com\.au:Other lists\Radiator
H~List-Id\: Radiator users .radiator\.open\.com\.au:Other

H~List-Id\: Radiator users \ char are not seen as special char in the RegEx string it
seems they are treated as such. The webinterface for creating rules does not
handle the <> chars properly.

The mail simply ends up in my main folder. There is no error why the rule is

I've got other similar rules that DO work:
  H~listid.declude.junkmail:Other lists\Declude junkmail
which matches with a header like:
  List-Id:
Here I have not escaped the period as a period will match a period anyway.

  I can see three differences.
  1) The radiator rule has a colon in it. It has been escaped but maybe there
is a problem with that
  2) The rule has a space in the string to be matched
  3) There are a < and > in the string to be matched

Is it know whether any of those will be a problem? I'll do some more
experimenting but it seems at least something is broken.

[IMail Forum] logging mailing lists

2008-07-15 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

We have one mailist list that we use and as far as I know I have all security
set up correctly. The list is populated by us based on student participating in
an event and we just edit the corresponding users.lst file.
The settings are:
"Allow Posting by:" Moderators.
No"Allow Unsubscribes based on subject line"
Yes"Disallow Subscription ( ie: Private list)
Yes"Disable list command"
Yes"Enable Posters list"
NoUse password

There is a posters file, it has just one e-mail address.

Now what happens if:
Someone else sending a mail to the list? Does it just disapper or does it gtet
sent to the list owner of somewhere else?
Can someone fake the poster e-mail address?

Where is the log for e-mails sent via the list? I've looked before and there
seems to be practicaly nothing in the sysMMDD log about messages sent to/via a
list. Is there a seperate log I need to activate?

"C:\IMail\Declude.exe" "C:\IMail\spool\Q5cf904585026.SMD"

I now have several D*smd A*.smd pairs in my \imail\spool directory. Can I
simply rename A to Q and drop the pairs in the \imail\spool\proc directory?

[IMail Forum] mail on server, and not... using IMAP

2008-04-23 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

Several users, all using Outlook Express and IMAP see this behaviour.

Outlook Express reports x number of unread mails in a certain mail folder. When
the user goes to that folder no new mails are visible. Using the webmail
interface the mails are there.
Or the reverse, OE reports no new mail in a certain folder, when I select that
folder, suddenly I see several new mails.

I'm assuming this in an OE bug but just in case, is there a way arround it
other than deleting the *.uid file and force OE to reread the whole mailfolder?

Is this related to the bug where a new mail will be reported, OE will show the
header. Once the user selects that mail and OE want to get the body of the mail
is reports the mail is no longer on the server?
Work arround to that bug is to move the mail to another folder using OE after
which the mail is readable in the new folder. Oh yeah, and in moving the mail
OE is suddenly able to read the mail and move it, all the while reporting it
cannot read the mail. :-(

IMail Server Version 10 was released to the public today, April 21, 2008.

Many new features have been added to improve security, ease-of-use and
low-bandwidth concerns. For IMail Server Version 10, we have addressed many of
the issues that were associated with previous versions. Here are some of the
highlights:

  New Features

. Ipswitch designed its own Digital Rights Management tool to replace HASP
from Aladdin Knowledge Systems, Inc. (All previous IMail versions will
continue to run on HASP.) . User Password Complexity Setting. System
Administrators can now decide how complex user passwords should be.

. Account Suspension from multiple failed Logins (Web Messaging only). If a
user fails to login with the correct ID and password after a predetermined
number of times (determined by the System Administrator) that account will be
suspended.

  . Checkboxes for message selection/deletion.

. User Interfaces have been updated in several places for better ease-of-use.

. Web Messaging Lite - Users with low-bandwidth (dial-up) can use this to
access their mailboxes more quickly.

  Improvements:

. IMonitor has been removed, which has improved IMail's performance by
reducing false positives.

. Plain text emails print at a larger font size now, so they are easier to
read.

  . Improved the installation process.

. Web Administrator has been internationalized, all foreign characters can
now be supported.

. Dirty IP setting under Premium Filter has been changed to take "No Action,"
during new installation.

These are only a few of the new features and improvements we've made. For a
complete list of new features and improvements for Version 10 please read the
full release notes at:

Although Windows 2003 now can call the defrag via a WMI script
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/topics/win2003/defrag.mspx I
cannot tell it to stop defragging after a while. It will finish when IT want's
to finish.
I'd rather have the thing defrag every night for a hour (or two) and stop after
that. What hasn't been done it can do the next day.

Anyone know of a way to do that? The objVolume.Defrag() method does not seem to
take any parameters.
Any other program doing it better?

My mailserver is a Windows 2003 R2 server with plenty of RAM, it seems the disk
access is getting to be the bottleneck eventhough I have the C: drive, with the
spool and log files, as RAID 1 and the D: drive with th mailboxes as a 4 disk
RAID 5. Logfiles get ZIPped every night.

As far as I know... yes.

I have the same problem. We sometimes send mails to all of our students in one
mail, that's over a THOUSAND recipients. Also we run a mailing list on our
sever. Clearly I cannot use that directive.

Besides that where is the added security in lowering the number of
recipients per message? Spammers know not to use large batches, the number of
recipients they use will probably be lower than what is configured on most
servers.

On Imail 2006.1, we've presently got our domain properties to a "default
maximum message" count of 0 (infinity). I have a tech who wants to change this
value to a lower number, as a preventative measure.

But we have an alias that sends an email to "everyone in the company", which
at present includes 200 names. If we set the "Default Maximum Messages" to
100, would that prevent an email sent to that alias from going out?

[IMail Forum] CDOSYS and invalid e-mail address

2008-01-12 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

We use CDOSYS to send mail from out website to the mailserver. On some
automated forms it is possible to add an e-mail address to a CC-list. Sometimes
sending the mail wil fail because a user wil enter a wrong e-mail address. The
IMail server will refuse to accept the mail.

It seems CDOSYS has no proper error handling, at least we could not find any
relevant to this case.
Is there any structured way CDOSYS will report an error in a way that is more
informative then just: "There is a problem." ;-)
Is there a list of the errors CDOSYS can produce and what they mean?

Re: [IMail Forum] WAY OT: VOIP class

2007-12-29 Thread Bonno Bloksma
WAY OT: VOIP classHi,

I've been on this train a while, started looking for implementation of VoIP a
few years ago. Mid 2008 we are finalyy going to implement it as well.

I can't tell you about callses as I'm on the other side of the big pond but.
1) Make sure your MAN/WAN connections are up to it.
- They need to be fast enough (about 80k per simultanious call)
- You need some form of quality controll to make sure time critical packets
like VoIP and later probably Video etc, are delived in time during heavy traffic
- Time for the VoIP etc packets on the line must not me to high (ping times <
100ms) and not change to mutch (jitter < ?%)

2)
Make sure your LAN connections are up to it.
- You need managed switches that can handle the QoS 802.1p protocol
- The switches need to have large enough buffers for 802.1p when you expect
lots of VoIP calls.

3)
At first I thought I needed VoIP capable hardware from "real" companies like
Mitel, 3Com or Philips, Siemens, Alcatel, etc.
However, last year I attended a seminar about Open software VoIP sollutions and
found out Asterisk with the proper support is stable enough for some
universities or towns to totally rely on it. When you wand redundancy by havind
a second VoIP server at a second site suddenly Asterisk gets very interesting
as most of the "real" companies charge extra licensed for a second server.

Also "when you want the supported features a VoIP server has to be used by a
lot of people in the company prices can soar when you use a server with
licences.
I've looked at a hybrid solution because of all the hardware we still have. I
then asked if their product supported voicemail boxes for all users and roaming
users. Sure they said. I then asked for the price to have ALL users use these
features and the price more then doubled. That's the nice thing about open
software. If the feature is there it is free for all to use.

Product software upgrades can be expensive as well. If you have a SA or
something like it on the product that can be expensive as well.

When you look at alternatives make sure al least one company is offering
Asterisk with support from them. That way you have the support of someone who
knows the product and you get all the features and upgrades for free. Support
for an Asterisk server is usually A LOT cheaper then on a commercial product as
they need only to charge you for their time.

I'm not telling you that you should no longer look at commercial products, but
if you have at least one Linux machine in you network now then you know Open
software can sometimes be the sollution. It's like that with VoIP as well. Have
a look at the features it supports. http://www.asterisk.org/

Hi,

Have a look at the HP Procurve line, The 29xx series does most of what you
want, but is not stackable.
However, The only "reason" for being stackable is having the switches
communicate at backplane speed between them right? If that is realy nessesary
you need to look at the coreswitches that are in a frame where one can plug in

Re: [IMail Forum] Moving to a new Server

2007-12-06 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi Kevin,

I only have three domains and did it another way because I wanted a "clean"
install after all the upgrades we went through (started with 6.x).
See my mail in the archives (okt 2006) what I did. But.. like I said, I only
had three domains.

Subject: [IMail Forum] Moving to a new Server

I am getting ready to move Imail to a new server and want to make sure I
  understand the procedure.

We are currently running Imail 8.22 on a Windows2000 server and we want to
move to Imail 2006.23 on a Windows2003 server. If I understand correctly we
will need to put 8.22 on the new machine then follow the steps in Document
IM-19980116-jb11.htm. And then "upgrade" to 2006.23.

Is my understanding correct? Also has anyone else done this and have any
  suggestions?

I am not opposed to contracting this out if anyone is interested, if so
  please contact me off list.

  Thanks,

  Kevin

[IMail Forum] list files

2007-11-20 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

According to http://support.ipswitch.com/kb/IM-19981218-EM01.htm the e-mail
addresses in users.lst should be:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

However, I just wanted to update a new list with a some hundred new users and
noticed the few users in there added via the "normal" interface are listed like:
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

1) What is the correct syntax for the users.lst file?
2) Can I mix those formats, with and without he < >
3) Does the Users.txt file have to be filled with the same addresses and names?

[IMail Forum] feature request

2007-10-26 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi Tripp,

With the recent development of the GBUdb mechanism in Sniffer I would very much
like to be able to block the realy bad ip-numbers in IMail. As there is
currently no scripted way to get the info in the IMail ACL could you put
this on the wish list?

As of this week the spammers are starting to send huge batches of spam in a
very short period to my mailserver. We have a normal volume of "real" mail of
about 4000-6000 msgs/day. Spammers are now sending 500 msg in a few minutes to
my server to get the spam delivered before the spam databases are updated. The
GBUdb system is perfect for handling this and provides a ready blocklist to be
used.

I think lots of Sniffer users would love to see this feature in IMail.

[IMail Forum] upgrading 2006.21 RC1 to release version

2007-08-14 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

Been on hold with the support desk for 34 min now, calling from The Netherlands
:-(
Maybe someone overhere knows the answer. ;-)

About a month ago I installed IMAil 2006.21 RC1 on my production server as the
2006.2 version was not stable and I had some vacation coming up. It's been
quite solid, so I've had a quiet vacation. But now I want to install th
"real" version, the 2006.21 release version.

When I run the setup I do not get the option to Upgrade as it sees itself
installed. So what next?
I can first Uninstall, and then install. Or I could do a repair.
Would a repair be enough, would it overwrite every RC1 file with the release
version file?

Re: [IMail Forum] Outsourcing Backup mail services

2007-08-02 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

I don't know how others do it but MY backup mail provider simply does a check
to see if the recipient is a valid e-mail adres. If they don't get an answer,
for instance when my mailserver is down, they will accept all mail, otherwise
only if the recipient is known.
In my log I see short sessions like:
08:01 00:01 SMTPD(b11f01db6fbb) [217.114.99.201] connect 217.114.100.110
port 44191
08:01 00:01 SMTPD(b11f01db6fbb) [217.114.100.110] HELO mx2.virtu.nl
08:01 00:01 SMTPD(b11f01db6fbb) [217.114.100.110] MAIL FROM:<[EMAIL
PROTECTED]>
08:01 00:01 SMTPD(b11f01db6fbb) [217.114.100.110] RCPT TO:<[EMAIL
PROTECTED]>
After that my server reports the [EMAIL PROTECTED] e-mail address as valid or
not. No "complicated" addresslist synchronisation is needed.

In Declude I have the IP addresses for those backup mailservers in a skip list
so all checks will be done as if that mailserver was never in the loop.

The engine uses a standard regular expression parser so a '.' means match
any character in that position. If you want to match a period exactly, you have
to escape it.

  Hi,

Hmm, indeed the manual states I need to escape those periods but..
  These two rules DO work:
  H~listid.declude.virus:Other lists\Declude antivirus
  H~listid.declude.junkmail:Other lists\Declude junkmail

Mails for both mailinglists are indeed moved to the right folder and the
periods are NOT escaped. I've just checked, there are no other rules moving
mail to these two folders. Also, in the local headers of a mail I find:
  X-IMail-Rule: H~listid.declude.virus:Other lists\Declude
antivirus Data- LISTID.DECLUDE.VIRUS.-16710038
So that rule is indeed applied to move the mail to the proper folder.

skipping AntiSpam filters

  Hi

I have recently added a secondary mailserver for all of the domains we host
mail for at a separate physical location. It all seems to be working fine
(we already had a 30 minute outage and it successfully spooled several
thousand emails and then delivered them all within about 20 minutes once the
main server came online) however we do have a problem with a huge increase
in spam and having looked at the headers of some of them it seems that mail
that is getting delivered through the secondary server is getting forwarded
onto the primary server and is NOT being scanned for spam. I have checked
our whitelist to ensure that the IP address of the secondary mailserver is
not listed as a Trusted address.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this? Using Imail Server
  2006 - Windows Server 2003.

  Thanks

  Hi,

Why does this rule not work:

  H~List-Id\:\ \:Other

As far as I know I have escaped all the special chars

This is part of the header of a message in that list:

  List-Id:
  List-Unsubscribe:

This message was not transferred to proper folder. Another similar rule:

  H~listid.declude.junkmail:Other lists\Declude junkmail

does work properly. Header for such a message are:

For now I've changed the OpenVpn rule to:

  S~\[Openvpn-users\]:Other lists\OpenVpn-Users

but I kinda like the list-id stuff as that will not get confused during
crossposting a reply as happens sometimes with similar lists like declude
junkmail and virus and with openvpn users and developers.

Hi,

Well,
H~List-Id\: :Other

dit not work. I'll try some else next. I'll try
H~List-Id\: \:Other

and see if maybe I DID have to escape the brackets.

  Hi,

  The on-line manual states:
  Note: The following characters have special meaning in a rule: {} () | * + ,
. : \If you want to use one of these characters in a search string, precede
it with a backslash. For example, to search for a plus sign, enter \+ in the
search string.

So, escaping the space might have been the error in that rule. I thought I
needed tot escape the < and > because they now too have a special meaning, the
name of the rule. But, indeed tha manual does not say so.

  I'll change the rule to
  H~List-Id\: :Other

I thought this was solved in 2006.21 RC1 as I have not seen this error anymore

It's been running rather stable these past few weeks.

Yes, when Imail 2006.2 was released and many started to use it, including
installations on high volume or heavily used servers, the webmail bugs started
to show themselves. As an example, I was running the preview for Imail 2006.2
on my server and had no errors or problems whatsoever. However my server is low
volume. After its release, when I installed it on a high volume client server
with users all over the place the problems arose.

As of right now, Imail 2006.21 RC1 is installed on my server and on my
client's high volume server and so far no errors have been seen or reported.

The preferences.config file is in each users file directory and is used by
webmail to set how the user wants certain things. If it does not exist, that
means the user has never changed anything from default and that is fine,
although in some cases having a preferences.config file even if everything is
default settings has helped.

This is a HUGE problem. I have a client with 800 accounts saying they're
going to leave the platform because they're constantly getting logged out. I
can't actually reproduce the probem here and am having a hard time tracking
down their browser settings because they're across the country.

Are there any temporary workarounds? What's the preferences.config fix?

What is the ETA on 2006.21? I know it's in RC1 status, but we need it FAST
FAST FAST!

I really think Ipswitch should start publishing a KNOWN ISSUES list with
every release, and constantly keep it updated as things arise. Forget scaring
off potential customers, they WANT to see this stuff. Be more concerned with
taking care of the many customers you already have! I looked through the
forums and boards before upgrading to this version, which was released on March
6th I think, before upgrading our system. I saw a reference here and there,
but it didn't sound like the widespread revolt that I'm experiencing!

Bill, resolution of these problems and development of 2006.21 is almost
complete. I and others have been testing with beta 3 (oops, meant preview 3)
and so far things are looking to be fixed. The couple of issues I saw were
either quickly resolved by simple code changes or by updating the

  Tripp,

You have helped me in the past with web messaging issues and now that you are
the product manager for Imail I am hoping you can once again fix a VERY big
problem with web messaging.

Many of our users are being logged out of web messaging when they send an
email. I've waited a week for some solution from tech support/development with
a final answer of downgrade to 2006.1 or await a new release. Neither of those
are solutions because downgrading doesn't give me much confidence to upgrade
and awaiting a new release will likely cost us business.

  Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the performance of 2006.2 when
used with IMAP and Outlook Express. We've been running a limited test of
2006.2 as a conversion from our old 7.15 server. Most of our clients use
Outlook Express configured with IMAP, so that is our main concern. The one
thing that I've noticed most is that 2006.2 is really slow to "wake up". That
is, if I go to a computer than I haven't used in a while (say, overnight) and
then launch OE, I get a long delay (with hourglass) before getting a message
that the server can't be reached. Click OK, then refresh, and OE works fine.
Or, I can short-cut the entire process by hitting escape (during the hourglass
wait), clicking on another folder besides InBox, wait a few seconds, then click
back to InBox.

Once you start actively using email, then there is no problem with
performance. However, it's that slow start that concerns me. It has to be
something about the way the server sets up the connection, and how quickly it
responds. Any thoughts on this?

  Thanks,

Judging from the error message, my guess is that the 'Collaboration User'

'change the Collaboration user'. Try without enabling that checkbox and see
what happens...

The only reason to use a SQL database is when one wants to have the user data

  Hi...

I'll be building a new server small corporate mail server with less
than 500 users and a few lists. I'll allow POP and web access.

Is it an advantage to go SQL or would the iMail default be fine. I've
been running on default for over 10 years without issues. If we did
go SQL I'd prefer Oracle, but would consider MS SQL Server or mySQL
  (if it's an option).

Also, would SQL hamper or improve recovery?

  Any suggestions?

We are running IMail 2006.2 and some people have problems reading the mail.
What they tell me is that they can log in, can see the mail list but when they

weeks ago it seems. Most people have no problems at all, some do.

Anybody recognise this?

  Anyone seen this error before?

  Error:

Unable to log into the system.

Reason: Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an
indication that other memory is corrupt.

This is shown on the login form when someone tries to login to Webmail on
IMail 2006.2. The hard drives had over 200gig free yet.

NOTE: I turned off logging for the webmail and then everything worked as
normal. The log file was 175meg, with other days being over 300meg each.
Therefore should not of been an size issue?

Hi John,

You and I know that, but then again WE've been around the block a few times in
this world. :-)

Most new sysops of the "click-generation" are less savy. Also, if we're going
that way, why the dot between 2006 and the rest of the number. ;-)

Wohever... 2006.21 could be a normal version number. What will Ipswitch do
later this year when after all the updates we DO get to the two digit minor
version number. Will 2006.10 realy be minor version 10 or just good old 1.0 ;-)

We have fixed the insertion of the trailer.txt for 2006.21 which should be
going into technical preview (beta) very soon. It is not configurable to
the point that it will be ignored for certain lists.

Re: [IMail Forum] 8.2 to 2006.2 issues

2007-04-25 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

Although the new webinterface is good and fast there are some issues. If you
want to go to IMail 2006.2 primaily for the webinterface I would stay with 8.22
(with all hotfixes) for a while. Just got a updated DLL from Ipswitch last
friday but that was a no go so they are still working on it.

Not everyone seems to run into this problem but it has a major impact on the
webinterface. I'm restarting it three times a day and even that sometimes isn't
enough. :-(

Once they lick this problem I would say yes go for it, it's feel a lot better
then the 8.22 version, my users like the new interace.

We are thinking of upgrading to the newest version of IMail soon. We are
currently on ver 8.2. We have issues with Webmail and slowness with it. About
1000 - 1500 users use webmail as their primary email client. If we upgrade are
there issues to be aware of? Will the new version help with our webmail issues
and how many webmail clients can it handle at a time?

[IMail Forum] feature request rules screen

2007-04-25 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

When we are talking about feature requests. Rules screen
A link to the relevant part of the help about rules would be nice to have at
the screen where rules are added/modified. And then especialy.

Most important is that the exeptions, the "Note" section from the help, is
explicitly posted there. Just about all questions I get about rules are about
the special characters not handled they way people expect them to.

Most of then never want to use the RegEx stuff but want to move list mail into
a special folder or something like it. So for instance they want to select on
subject contains [IMail Forum] and that does not work the way they expect it
to. ;-)

Of course other do want to use the regex stuff but don't know it's there. :-(
Explicitly noting the exception chars at that screen might tell them enough to
realise regex stuff does work. :-)

Hi,

I know how *I* can see it but can a user see it as well? As far as I know they
cannot. Might be a nice option to have a link on the prefferences page, near

For me I usually have a VNC session open to the mailserver so I can access the

  In Web Admin,

a.. go to User Admin,
b.. select User,
c.. Click on Vacation Message Link on left side,
d.. then select Vacation Recipients Link which appears under Vacation

If that user has a vacation.snt file, it will display here.

If I remember correctly one could see in IMail 8.x who had received a
vacation messages, somehow the content of the vacation.snt file was viewable. I
cannot fond this option in IMAil 2006.2.

Am I missing something or am I misremembering something? If so, could this be

2007-04-19 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

Yup, that's the way we do it overhere. At the main site where I host the
mailserver, all the webservers, etc. I have a HP server running CentOS (Redhat
Enterprise Linux without the logo's), the backup is a cheap clone PC with the
same config.

On error: Switch kabels, push power on button. ;-)

Normally the backup machine is connected to my inner network, that way I can
have it download patches etc to keep it up2date. I even have two different
configs on the machine so it can be backup for two different firewall machines.

[IMail Forum] user settings, defaults, feature request?

2007-04-17 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

In the Preferences screen are several users settings for which we would like to
change the default, if possible on a per domain basis.
For instance we would like for students NOT to save sent mail by default and
purge deleted mail in stead of moving it to the Deleted folder. For our staff
we would like to keep the settings as they are.

I have not been able to find a screen where I can either change the current
setting or the default. Am I missing something or have I just added something
to the feature request list, or at least upped the priority?

Most email lists (this one excluded, ha!) insert some identifying headers
you can search. This forum uses a consistent FROM, but if present the extra
headers are a better sort target.

For example, the SpamAssassin users list includes:
Mailing-List: contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]; run by ezmlm
list-help: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
list-unsubscribe: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
List-Post: <mailto:users@spamassassin.apache.org>
List-Id:
in every message. Very easy to sort.

Re: [IMail Forum] HTTP Failing on 2006.2?

2007-03-28 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

I've had IMail 2006.2 in test for several weeks with a dozen users and we found
no problem. It wasn't until we started using the webinterface with about 2000
users when suddenly problems started to appear. Kinda hard for Ipswitch to find
problems no one knows about. :-(

Unfortunately these problems are very hard to diagnose as all resources I have
been tracking show now limit reached or something like it. Also the problem is
a wierd one where parts will start to fail and other parts wil still work. A
user can suddenly no longer send mail via the web interface, the error mesages
refers to a socket failure. The rest of the webmail will work and normal SMTP,
POP, IMAP etc will also work.
On the server itself suddenly fileshares on other servers can no longer be
reached, sniffer update (using wget) will fail, stuff like that. A while later
the IClient webmail interface may no longer work but the IAdmin interface will
still work, even when most things fail I can still reach the server and my
monitoring tool can still log in to the server and restart the w3publ service.
Try finding a common cause for those errors ans exceptions to see which
resourse is the problem and THEN try to find the cause to depleting that
resourse.

It's not as easy as some people think it is, I wish it were. :-( For now I'm
restarting the w3publ service on the Windows 2003 server three times a day.

Anyone else having issues with HTTP failing? It seems like it is going
down a couple of times a day since we upgraded to 2006.2. I have the service
set to restart on a failure and it comes back up, but it kicks everyone off

Yes please. Had a user overhere getting worried as well.

During login the titlebar showed "Tio webmail login" after login that changed
to "Ipswitch Web Messaging" . She thought she had accidentally ended up on

Hi,

I had the default domain as a IMail INTERNAL domain. The user is then created
in that domain and given the right privileges. This is just a IMail INTERNAL

I don't know what needs to be done if the first domain is an external domain.

Hi,

1) I did the default install to C:\IMail with a domain I will not use.
Declude had problems with the Default IMail directory.

2) After the initial install you can add any domain you want with the files
for that domain at any location we want. I have two other domains on the server
which we DO use and the root for those domains are
D:\IMail_Domains\

3) The user specified here is created as the first "user" and will get
administrator priviliges within IMail. After you start the webadmin interface
and log in with that user you can do most anything. However, as soon as you
access the services tab you need to provide the credentials for a user with
admin privilegs on the machine running the services. Normal rules for Windows
auto login exist, so you may not have to provide these credentials.

Subject: [IMail Forum] 2006.2 installation questions

  Hi,

I'm feeling sort of stupid, but I'm having a tough time going through the
basic decisions for installing 2006.2.

We're upgrading from 7.15, which means it's been a long time since I've
had to install IMail. The challenge here is that we are installing to a new
machine (fresh install), with the idea that we'll move the domains and
mailboxes over afterwards. So the install process keeps asking me questions,
and I'm not sure of the differences from the old versions of IMail, and I can't
find any answers in the Getting Started Guide or the Ipswitch website.

Here are the questions I couldn't decide on:

  1. Installation path. In the old installation, IMail went into a folder
D:\IMail (which, may have been an upgrade from 4.x or 3.x) and all of the
domains went under that folder. In the new 2006.2 installation, it wants to
install in the more normal \program files\Ipswitch\messaging folder. I don't
care if the program files go there, but I like the idea of keeping the domains
and mailboxes in the \IMail folder. So do I just tell it to install to the
default location, figuring that I'll be able to change the domain and mailbox
locations later? Or do I tell it to install to \Imail? (Just for reference,
this is all on the D: drive.) (For now, I've chosen D:\IMail)

  2. User database. In the old 7.15 installation, we had one real domain,
based on our NT user accounts, and then we had various virtual domains that
used the IMail internal (registry) database. In the new installation, when I
chose NT user accounts, it warned me against that (due to performance issues).
Instead, it recommend using the Active Directory accounts. So I chose that,
but am I correct in assuming that I will still be able to add virtual domains
later that use the internal registry database? And what is the real difference
(from an IMail administrator's point of view) between using the AD and the NT
User accounts?

Once I chose the AD user accounts, it gives me a long list of
instructions about an account to be configured with the Framework 1.4. Among
other things, it wanted me to setup impersonation but was really ambiguous on
how to do that. I made my best guess, but more information would have been
helpful.

  3. Administrator account for web services. It asks for a pre-existing
admin account to access administrative web services. I tried

  3. Administrator account for web services. It asks for a pre-existing admin
account to access administrative web services. I tried one of the AD
administrator accounts (which doesn't seem appropriate anyway) and it said the
account doesn't exist. I tried a local admin account (this server is a member
server and not a controller on the domain) and it said that doesn't exist. In
fact, I have yet to find an account that it will accept and this is where I am
currently stuck.

It would have been nice if there had been some documentation on the setup
choices, but, lacking that, I'm hoping someone here can help.

  Thanks,

217.114.99.203=mail.test.tio.nl
I also have several domains on my server, tio.nl, student.tio.nl and

When someone connects via SMTP to my server to 217.114.99.201 the server will
report itself als: 220 tio.nl (IMail .) ... X1
Now is this correct as that is the DOMAIN or should it have said 220
mail.tio.nl (IMail.. ?
A check for a PRT record wil fail as the tio.nl A record will point to our

I can enter ONE name to use as helo name when sending mail but that would fail

Subject: [IMail Forum] 2006.2 migrate or in-place upgrade and what's involved

  Hi,

With the release of 2006.2, we're finally ready to upgrade. We've been
waiting a long time, as shown by the fact that our old server runs 7.15. We
have a new server ready to run 2006.2, and I can see two paths to take:

  1. Copy over the existing 7.15 installation to the new machine, then install
2006.2 over it.

  2. Do a fresh install of 2006.2 to the new machine, and then migrate the
users.

Path #2 is preferrable to two reasons: first, we've been running IMail a long
time and the old server has a lot of legacy files and registry entries dating
back to Version 4 or 3. So a clean start would be nice and might help to avoid
future problems. Second, we would really prefer to move the domains over a few
at a time, just to make sure everything is running smoothly. Moving everyone
over at once is just asking for trouble in trumps.

Path #1 is preferrable for one reason: I make sure that all of the users,
their messages, settings, lists, etc. all get moved over correctly.

I know that I can generate a list of domains and users to use with
adduser.exe, but I don't know about actually moving their mail all over to the
new system. Is there an easy or automated way to do that? Will it work to
just copy over all of the mailbox files? And what about rules, lists, and
other personalized items?

I looked through the archives backwards and forwards, and although I saw a
couple of questions along this line, I didn't see any detailed answers. Which
path is preferrable? And if I follow Path #2, what is involved in migrating
the domains, users, their mail, and everything else?

  Thanks,

  Ben

[IMail Forum] date in US format

2007-02-27 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

In our webmail the date/time info is in US format eventhough every other
setting on the server is for Dutch.
Where can I set the date/time format to dd-mm-jj hh:mm, the current way is
confusing. Most people realise that 1PM is 13:00 but if you see a mail with a
date of 3/2/07 it's not realy clear whether this is March 2nd of February

Does IMail 2006.2 read the local config and is there another problem or did we
forget to set something in a config file?

[IMail Forum] searching who sent it

2007-02-26 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

Using IMail 2006.2 on a Windows 2003 server

A mail was sent using the account of a student but she claims she did not do
it. So I've searched the logs and it seems the mail was entered via the
webinterface. No strange thing as most of our students use the webinterface.
But now I'm trying to match lines from the IIS log to the lines in the IMail
log to see where the webmail came from. I'm unable to do so :-(

I can find 4 login lines with that user account. The 1st at 10:34 form a
IP-number 1, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th at 12:35, 12:36 and 12:36 from IP-number 2.
Now I want to match the sent e-mail at 14:22 to either IP-1 or IP2 but I cannot
find what to look for.
Neither IP-1 or IP-2 show up in the timeframe
The last entry for IP-1 is 10:35
The last entry for IP-2 is 13:36

Looking at these IMail log lines. What should I look for in the IIS log?

Re: [IMail Forum] New Server + Upgrade

2007-02-22 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

If you have no good reason not to, I would suggest just doing it the regular
way. That would be install the identical version on the new server. Transfer
the data and the registry info, make sure all is well and then upgrade.

We... did it the other way because I have been upgrading since version 6.x. and
wanted to create a clean environment.

I installed 2006.2 on the new server, installed everything I needed and then
created all the mailboxes. I could do that because I have all the mailboxnames
and passwords in a database (the database for our intranet site) and could just
use the adduser tool to recreate them. After that I transferred just the
mailbox content to the new server and ran the tool to transfer the addresslists
to the database.

We ran into one problem though that's specific to the non english countries.
Special characters like éáüö etc are not yet supported in the new IMail Admin
interface. I hope Ipswitch will fix this asap.

create empty mailboxes on the new server and just "dump" the mailbox files from
the old server in them.

Most students and teachers have no mailrules or stuff like that but.. the
address books do have relevant data we want to transfer if possible. As the
whole addressbook stuf has changed can anybody give me some pointers how to
handle this?

[IMail Forum] IMail 2006.x

2007-02-14 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

Could not find anymore which IMail 8.x features are still missing from IMail
2006.2, nor do I know wheter this was part of the original webinterface as we
extensively modified the original webinterface for our use. But

1)
We used to have selection boxes in front of each mail in the list which could
be ticked. Then people could select to delete the marked mails.
Now we have to use the standard way to select multiple items in a list. In
Windows one uses Ctrl+mouseklik and Shift+mouseclick. Funny thing is, other
standard ways like Shift+curor key don't work, Don't know what Mac or Linux
users use to select multiple items.
Was the method with the selection boxes part of the original interface?
Will that feature be introduced in the IMail 2006.x line webinterface?

2)
We used to be able to specify how many mails we wanted to see in the list above
the body of the selected mail. It seems I cannot set that number in the
preferences screen. Right now I have 123 pages of 10 items each, I'd rather
have a lot less pages with 20, 50 or a 100 items each.

[IMail Forum] IMail 2006.2 and Safari

2007-02-13 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

Had one user test IMail 2006.2 for me and he told me he cannot send html mail
using the safari btrowser. Het get's an error "only plain text is supported by
your browser" or something like it.
With Firefox on the Mac the problem does not exist.

Under known issues there is something about Safari:
Safari: Web Client - When replying/forwarding HTML messages, all encoding/HTML
tags in original message are displayed.

Is this the same issue or have we stumbled onto something new? The issue about
seeing the html code is indeed confirmed by him.

2007-02-12 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

Hmmm, overhere IClient is indeed configured to use .NET 2.0.x but IAdmin is
still configured to use .NET 1.1
So far I have not found any problems so probably this is correct but

Kevin.
The release notes under "IMail server 2006 features" talk about .NET 2.0
support for Web messaging, web administration and instant messaging.
At the end under "Additional new features" the release notes for 2006.2 talk
about web mail using .net 2.0 but don't mention web admin.
Should IAdmin be configured for .NET 1.1 or 2.0?

Hi,

The 2006.1 to 2006.2 upgrade was a breeze but then we weren't realy using
the 2006.1 installation. I just had it on the server to start installing stuff
like Declude and then upgraded.

Before it was just handling one mailbox, now there are about ten mailboxes on
the server. Next week we'll do the transfer and then there will we about 2000
mailboxes on the server. Most users overhere use the webmail so we'll see how
it handles under load. Should do fine, it's a new HP DL380G5.

Ipswitch has staged the launch of several products so they are not actively

the 2006.2 download is there. However, as I wrote, if you don't NEED it now
they would rather have you wait in order not to overload their helpdesk.

For us... I NEED to upgrade to my new server, the old one (the disks) is
dying. And I don't want to test and release a server in production only to do
another upgrade a few weeks later. Also, we use the webinterface A LOT and the
fact that it no longer needs the IMAP service to access the mail is a big plus
for us.

2007-01-27 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

Great, I'm in the process of launching a new mailserver for my production
environment en didn't want to wait, couldn't wait, until March. I'll just load
up 2006.2 on my new prod server next week, which is now running my test domain,
and take it from there.

Question, In november I picked up de Single Sign On script Mike posted (as
SSO_Post.ZIP) and we've been working with that. Will that still work with
2006.2 or wil the .Net 1.1 to .Net 2.0 change have an affect on this script as
well. I don't think so but if anyone already knows for sure I'd like to know.

[IMail Forum] installation glitch

2007-01-22 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

Should this be in the FAQ somewhere? Or is it already there and did I read over
it.

Had some problems installing IMail 2006.1 on my new Windows 2003 server. >From
the last time I remembered I needed to have at least Internet Explorer 6 to
install the software so I knew the IE version might have something to do with
it. I had IE 7 so that's "at least IE6".

Installing the software as a user with Administrator priviliges on the machine
gave me a warning I might not have enough rights to install the software. Duh?
I then remembered the famous "Internet Explorer Enhanced Security
Configuration" that gets installed by default on all Windows 2003 servers. Lo
an behold, after removing that nice piece of software I was able to install
IMail. :-)

Can't remember someone else writing about this overhere so I'll just mention it
for the next person looking why IMail won't install.

[IMail Forum] feature request

2007-01-03 Thread Bonno Bloksma
Hi,

I know we can have a blacklist for ip-numbers in IMail. As far as I know this
blacklist can, sort of, be populated, by IMail when to many invalid users
errors happen during a session but..

My ISP has found a way to do user validation on the various backup mailservers
for all the domains they are backup for, they simply set up a session to my
server before the data part starts overthere and see if I want to accept the
mail based on the sender and recipient info. If I refuse because of an invalid
user then they wil refuse the mail as well. This is a nice way where there is
no need to set up anything on the mailservers for which they are backup. If my
server is down they will simply accept all mail.

So for every mail they get with a non existent user they will try my server
with that same user to see if the user exists. If I were to blacklist all
servers attemting to deliver mail to non existent users I would blacklist them
as well. I would need a whitelist overruling the blacklist. As fas as I know
that feature is not in IMail, right?

[IMail Forum] rights on new server

2006-11-07 Thread Bonno Bloksma

Hi,

I will install a new WIndows 2003 server soon and
install IMail 2006.1 on it. I'd like to reduce the default filesystem rights a
bit by deleting the default rights "everyone" has to the root of each
partition.

Will all the correct rights be assigned when I
first remove those rights, and then, as a local administrator, install IMail?
Anyone done that?

p.s. Any thoughts about which Windows 2003 version
is better? Just standard Win2k3SP1 or should I go for the R2
version?

riskthat there'll be a certain percent of keyboard errors causing
  who-knows-whatkind of secondary problems.
If you just export the Ipswitch key to a text file,
do simple textbased case replacement and import it, that should not take to
long.

  I tried to upgrade to
2006 and spent a week fixing the mess. Ipswitch had to have some of the senior
people to work with me to get things right and in the end we had to go back to
8.22 due to all of the problems we encountered. Mostly due to the fact we have
been on the same program since before version 6 and all of the old skeletons
  came out to cause problems.

  Hi,

  Not every customer
of my company will move to IMail 2006. Some don't need or want the new
gadgets, some don't want upgrade to a new server.
  Ipswitch should
support IMail 8.22 until the end of next year. It can't be the truth, that a
security hole is a reason to upgrade to the latest
  version.

  Other companies are

  I can't knock
Ipswitch for not wanting to support a product indefinetly, but it seems like
the pulled the plug on 8.x and 7.x rather soon. Even Microsoft support Win 98
until recently, and that is far more complex than Imail.

>> The
answer is obvious, time to drop Imail. <<

The only problem is that the
alternatives aren't exactly that great.  SmarterMail looks like a great
product, but it's still lacking some of the fundamental elements of a
corporate mail server like TLS.  They also remind me now of how
IPswitch was 5 or 6 years ago.  I'm afraid that if I jump ship to
SM, in a few years they'll start going down the same
over-priced, feature-bloated, performance-lacking, unstability-ridden road
that Ipswitch (and Declude) did.  I've looked at the other
alternative products and none are really that viable
IMO.

I would love it if there were a
full featured Open Source mail server.  Not that I am looking to save
money - I'd just like to be able to use a product that is driven by
functionality instead of the bean counters.

FWIW, I didn't renew my IMail
service agreement that expired a month or two ago.  I'm not sure what
I'm holding out for, but I don't want to feel like I'm being robbed by
paying Ipswitch to use their product.  That said, I'm not using a
version with a vulnerability in it, but that shouldn't matter.  If a
vulnerability is discovered in any version of a piece of software, the
vendor should provide a patch regardless of SA
status.

Re: [IMail Forum] move users to new server

2006-10-19 Thread Bonno Bloksma

Hi,

Same "problem" here. I have a Windows 2000 box with IMail 8.2x and an old
Declude version.
I want to move to a new machine with Windows 2003 and I *don't* want to
transfer old IMail settings. Just the mailboxes and the user settings. I
want to have a "clean" (as clean as possible) setup on the new machine.

I've done several upgrades and moves in the past but there was never such a
big difference in the way IMail works. Usually I'd install the old version
on the new box, do the transfer as per KB IM-19980116-JB11, and then upgrade
the new box.
I want to preserve the old box with the old software for a few days as a
fall back in case something does not work.

I'm testing the new software on a separate testbox and would like to copy
all settings from that box to the new production machine which will run the
same software. After that I want to move just the user settings and
mailboxes to the new machine and be up and running.

Maybe Trip Allen or Kevin Gillis can give us a few hints how to go about
this.

Seems like, if I copy the mailboxes and just the registry settings for
HKLM\Software\Ipswitch\IMail\* to the new machine running the new
version of IMail all should work.

* being both the name and the ip-number for each domain.

Kevin, Trip, how about it?

Groetjes,

Thanks Markus. I was able to find that but I'm in the exact same boat as
the original poster:
- Currently on Imail 8.22 running Windows 2000
- Moving to Imail 2006.1 on a new (different) server running Windows 2003

I wasn't sure on the best practice either, whether it's best to start with a
clean install of 2006.1 and transfer into that, or install 8.22 on the new
2003 server, transfer everything, then upgrade to 2006.1?

Re: [IMail Forum] Does this sound fair?

2006-09-21 Thread Bonno Bloksma

Hi,

We have a test server now running IMail 2006.1 and
Declude 4.3.7 with 2 virus scanners (3 including the built in one) and Sneffer
as external SPAM filter. I haven't found any problems anymore so I guess we'll
upgrade soon. Now all I need to find out about is how to do an upgrade and a
transfer to a new server at the same time.
But that's one for after my vacation. See ya

How many people have yet to upgrade? I've not seen
sufficient messages in this forum saying the iMail 2006 is as stable as my
  current version 8.22.

The following is my response to an advertising email
to renew my service agreement from ipswitch:

To be honest, us loyal customers that extended our
service agreements for another year but never got a full year of new working
  stable software should be compensated.
I paid for iMail 2006 but never installed it because
it has yet to reach stable levels. Personally I am very unhappy that ipswitch
looked the other way and took our money without ever compensating anyone for
the false advertising of a product as stable and ready for production when it
was not We should all get another year of service contract without having
to pay twice for what has not yet been provided...

[IMail Forum] Dutch translation

2006-09-20 Thread Bonno Bloksma

Hi,

We are thinking about translating the IMail 2006.1
interface into Dutch. Although some translations seem to be available, Dutch is
not one of them yet. The way Ipswitch has set up IMail 2006 it seems our
work won't be useless when newer versions become available. So it seems worth
the effort.

[IMail Forum] mailing list not working

2006-09-15 Thread Bonno Bloksma

Hi,

So far we have always used an alias for this as
there were never more then a few dozen people who needed to get the mail but now
there's a few hundred so. I need to create a mailing list. Created the list
as I think it should but. mail comes in, get's accepted by IMail and then
nothing.

It's a private list which we will maintain by
editing the users.lst and users.txt files via another program. For testing
purpouses we have added two addresses via the IMail interface to make sure we
have not made any syntax erros. Only subscribers are supposed to be able to
post, noone is supposed to subscribe via a list command.

User e.kanger is part of the list, user software is
not. After the message is received on the server nothing seems to happen. Any
idea what I need to look at?

Hi,

We use Declude and we do a subject prefix [SPAM: xx] where xx is the number
of points it scored.

As Outlook Express is incapable of filtering on message headers other that
the standard headers allready defined, this is the only way for people to
filter these messages and put them asside.

I would appreciate getting a general sense of what others are doing with the
"Prefix Subject with" property of the anti-spam filters of Imail. We are
presently prefixing subjects of email that are flagged in the filters with
"[SPAM-]", where is the type of filter. We get some complaints from
users that do not want to see this prefix.

Are others using or not using this prefix?

Thanks.

If I remember correctly Outlook 98 was a free upgrade to Outlook 97 or

I have upgraded several Windows 98 SE machines with Outlook 97 installs to

Now with the header information.
Good Catch. I did not think of including the header.

Thanks,

hi chris,

we are in final testing now and released to the Preview Users today.
general availability is still being set.

we have focused on quality and improving the installation/iis/active dir
configuration. here's a short list of what's included in 2006.1?

1) several updates to the web messaging
==>ability to create personal group lists in the web messaging including
drag n drop features when managing groups
==>auto add recipients to address book
==>link to web calendar
==>disk space indicator
==>remember un/pw when logging in
==>persistent branding changes when doing updates

2) AntiSpam
==> major upgrade to the mail-filters premium anti-spam (catches gif/jpg
based spam, can set spam signature update frequency, up to 25-35% faster)
and other updates.

3) several defect fixes (including auth issue in SMTP and VDomains and
host

admins being able to configure user disk space) and updates including an
installation checker to make sure you have all the prerequisites before
installing

bye for now,

Re: [IMail Forum] Single Account - Multiple Users

2006-05-18 Thread Bonno Bloksma

Hi,

This is a Outlook Express bug which also surfaces
when just ONE persone/computer is accessing the IMAP folder. It is also sort off
present when using OE to access news servers.

When not using OE for a number of minutes and then
cliking on a folder it wil instantly claim there is no connection, right after
that there is a connection and mail can be seen/read/marked/etc.

Somehow OE also sometimes cannot access a mail the
first time it tries to get it from the server. My feeling has always been that
it's related to the other item. The problem with this bug is that OE will mark
somewhere for itself that it could not download the message and will refuse to
do so in the future. Funny thing is If you trie to MOVE the message, for
instance from the IMAP inbox foldetr to the Local Folders Inbox, it will happily
do so, getting the message from the server and putting it in the local folder.

[IMail Forum] test IMail 2006, upgrade later this year

2006-04-11 Thread Bonno Bloksma

Hi,

I will be setting up a test server for IMail
2006.03 this week, or next week. We will do several tests to see if it
intigrates with our website etc. In the summer, when most of our students are
away from school I will buy a new server, set up the then latest IMail on
it and want to transfer the test domein form the test server and the live staf
and student domains from the IMail 8.22 server to the new server.

I have transferred IMail from one server to another
several times, allways did it with the proven way to first have the same version
on both servers and then transfer the data. However, this summer my new server
will be running the latest Windows, IMail, Declude, etc and I don't want to
install an old version first. I'd rather not install a major upgrade on my old
server if that is not needed. Also I'll need to transfer my test domain to the
new test server without installing an old IMail version first next
week.

Is there a KB article describing this situation? I
haven't found it. :-(

Groetjes,

Re: [IMail Forum] 2006.03 is it safe?

2006-03-31 Thread Bonno Bloksma

Hi,

[]
Oh yes, another feature "lost" in this upgrade is the graphic
display of disk usage/available for the client. Gone. Users do not know when
they are near capacity any longer, with the exception of using the Full
Mailbox Notification. The disk usage graphic was a very useful tool that
just disappeared.

Oop, that's a feature we would realy WANT to have back. We have a lot of
students that have mailboxes near the limit. They "constanly" need to know
when they are too close to th elimit.

Kevin, is it on the list already to be re-added?

Re: [IMail Forum] Blackberry Issue

2006-03-24 Thread Bonno Bloksma

Hi,

My boss has a blackberry and all mail:
1) Is completely base64, even if it's plain text
2) Has a plain text signature ending normally defined at the provider
website

3) Has a few extra bytes with random chars *after* the signature

Don't know if that is because of an error at the provider (Vodafone NL) or a
blackberry problem. Nor wheter it has any relation to your problem. But
maybe it get you thinking in the right direction.

It just struck me: can someone tell me how the list server is IMail 2006
compares to the list server in prior versions?

Are needs for a list server have always been modest, so it was never
  worth

it for us to invest in a separate, more powerful program. On the other
hand, IMail's list server has always primitive, and we're always wished
they would upgrade it. Hence my question.

[IMail Forum] central changing webmail settings

2006-03-24 Thread Bonno Bloksma

Hi,

I seem to remember there was a discussion about
this a while ago. I cannot remember whether that was initiated by me nor what
the result of that was. Neither can I find any messages about it,
so

We have decided that we want to have a new default
setting for deleting mail in the webinterface. Of course each individual can set
this for his or herself however Most wil for whatever reason not do so
until told over and over again. Therefore

1) Is it possible to set default webmail settings
for new users using IMail 8.22?
2) If not, is it possible using IMail
2006.03?
3) If not, wil it be possible in the near future?
Probably need kg to answer this one...

4) Is it possible to change specific webmail
settings for current users using IMail 8.22?

5) If not, is it possible using IMail
2006.03?
6) If not, wil it be possible in the near future?
Probably need kg to answer this one...

As to 1) and 4), I have not found any way yet so it's probably a no to
those two items. But as to 2, 3, 5 and 6.

Re: [IMail Forum] Imail mail box size limit

2006-03-03 Thread Bonno Bloksma

Hi Travis,

Outlook 2000 and 2002 hit a hard limit at 2.0 GB.

Right as they use *ONE* large file to store everything.

Outlook 2003 If you convert the PST file to the 2003 version can go
apparently to 4GB.

Ok, still ONE PST file. I thought Outlook 2003 was smarter. I thought it was
using the Outlook Express MBX stucture.

Outlook Express (although never tested) hits its hard workable limit at
2GB as well.

Nope it doesn't. Outlook Express uses one file per mailbox folder. So it
can store max 2GB per folder. I have several users going over the GB limit,
one approaching 10GB. He has been using Outlook Express in stead of Outlook
for over a year now.
Have a look at the
"C:\D&S\\Loc.Settings\App.Data\Identities\{..id..}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express" folder. In that folder are seperate MBX files for each e-mail
folder. IMAP folders are prepended with the name of the account given in de
account general screen.

Gordon wrote:

I am facing the opposite situation - I am in a corporate environment,
and having that much email on a users local PC, that is not backed up or
lost if the PC crashes. At least with the IMAP accounts, I can backup it
up.

The same goes for us. If a PC dies or mail is lost for whatever reason we
still have a backup of that mail. We also have close to 2000 students using
the webmail interface to access their mail. That mail wil be backed-up as
well.

I have a couple of IMAP mailboxes that are 2.1Gb in size (yes I know way
to big), some of my users are using Outlook express to access there imap
account (on a local LAN), and OE is starting to have an issue reading the
BIG mailbox.

I am in the process of pruning / deleting / moving messages from that mail
box, But does OE or IMAP have a mailbox size limit that it can work with.

Im running Imail 8.22 on a W2k server formated with NTFS

My top 10 users (including me are)
19.7 GB
23.5 GB
31.8 GB
41.8 GB
51.7 GB
61.4 GB
71.2 GB
8900 MB
9853 MB
10 840 MB

None of us are having problems as long as.. the mailbox is divided in
plenty of smaller chunks. Each (sub) folder is a mbx file on the server and
on the client. These should never approach the 2GB limit. Other then that I
have not seen any problems.

Lot's of these large boxes are being used by people NOT on the local LAN.
However, we do use 8Mbit ADSL lines at our remote sites and the main site
has a private dark fiber with 100Mbit converters on it to the NDIX, which is
less then 10 miles away from that site.. :-)

Re: [IMail Forum] SMTP error

2006-02-15 Thread Bonno Bloksma

Hi,

Found that key when I took a look at that part of the registry. ;-) Funny
this isn't part of the HKLM\Software\Ipswitch\Imail key hive.

There is another KB article which states that all we need to do to transfer
to a backup mailserver is to have the (identical) software, the mailboxes
and the IMail key hive. That specific article then seems to be in error as
part of the settings are in the key below.

Bonno,

To force authentication, set the value ForceAuthOnExtraPort =1 on the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SMTPD32\Parameters.

Hi Travis,

I have read the BK article about IMail 8.2x but that only talks about
adding

the port, not about forcing auth on it. Or maybe the article isn't written
clearly enough.

It states:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SMTPD32\Parameters.
To enable SMTP to listen on an alternate port, set the data for
EnableExtraPort to 1.

The default alternate port is 587 (as recommended by RFC 2476), but if you
wish, you can specify a different port by changing the data for ExtraPort.
Be sure to enter the new port number in decimal and not hexadecimal.

So that is how one creates another port. But it does not specify whether
this is a auth only port. As a matter of fact the next part suggests that
we

need to set that somewehere else:

Once you have forced authenticated on the alternate port, until the email
client successfully authenticates, IMail will only accept the following
commands:

So somehow one needs to force auth on that extra port as well. However
this

KB article does not specify where that information can be found. :-(

 Exactly!

In iMail 2006 use the following - the GUI sets these values.

 EnableExtraPort=1

 ExtraPort=587

ForceAuthOnExtraPort=1 If you want to force auth, otherwise leave 0

In 8.2x here is your KB article:

Re: [IMail Forum] Feature request, deleting deleted mail

2006-01-16 Thread Bonno Bloksma

Hi,

There's no requirement that the storage mechanism that IMail uses should
be understandable by anything other than an IMail process.

That would be great if the "the storage mechanism that IMail uses" has no
other impact. However, by now two incidents hare occured where the new
mechanism has some impact. A mail archiving tool and a virusscanner. Both
finding mails that should no longer be there.

They are both looking at an internal structure the format of which may
be changed at each new relaease.

Right. So when that happens I will have to look into it.

What I am asking for is in line with your suggestion, that only IMail now
how things work, I would then like IMail to have a mechanism to
circumvent
the impact of the changes made. In my case a way to force purging a
mailbox.

And what if the next release compresses each message in the mailbox? Are
you then going to ask for an option to not compress it?

Maybe, if THAT is the only way I can detect virusses still present in a
mailbox and it is considered a functionality we do not want to do without I
might request it. On the other hand, I might ask f-prot to not only
understand encoded files in e-mails but to also understand compressed IMail
mailboxes. Of course, if Ipswitch decides to use a standard compression
format like RAR or ZIP I would not even have to ask f-prot for any extra
functionality as it allready understands those formats.

Your suggestion would be the same like "nothing needs to understand the
filesytem but the OS". That's great as long as the OS has ALL the toold
needed for both normal operations as well as problem situations. As we
both

know that is not the case there are multiple tools that understand what a
FAT, NTFS, etc filesystem is.

The tools either use defined APIs or need to be upgraded whenever the
structure of the filesystem changes. Your complaint about IMail is like
complaining that Microsoft implementing NTFS makes your old Norton DOS
Utilities no longer work.

Fortunately new tools came available, so that would be equivalent to the new
version of f-prot finding virusses in the new IMail mailboxes. If those new
tools for the NTFS system would not have come, there would have been huge
pressure on Microsoft to make those tools available.

You should be complaining to the implementors of your mail archiving
tool and virus scanner, not to Ipswitch.

Of course that is one way. However, my feature request was there for two
reaons, one was the request to have the purging be done during off-hours
that way keeping the purge actions during businesshours to a minimum. It
just happened to coincide with my other need for the deleted mails to be
gone.

As to Mhonarc, it may have to switch to using IMAP to access the mailbox in
the future when the next "problem" arises. As the webmail seems to have done
that as well it may turn out to be the new "window into the mailbox" in the
future.

Hi Tripp,

I read the KB article, my mail was in response to a message from you in this
forum where you pointed to that article.

However, my problem with that solution is, I want to do the purging during
off-hours. So I would like to have to 10% limit in operation for normal
hours but would like to have the option to force purging the mailfolders
during the night. As some people overhere have mailboxes wel over 2GB and
some individual mail folders over 1GB you can see what will happen if
suddenly IMail decides it's time to purge one of those folders. :-(

For those four folders with a virus in them... it is also a problem for ME
to purge the mail during off-hours. I can set the secified key but then I
have get into those mail folders and delete one mail. As I don't have all
the passwords but ok, for those 4 mailboxes I can ask the password, hope
they will give it to me, and then log in to their account in the evening.

About your comment

We do not recommend running an AV scanner on a mailbox.
I have f-prot run the weekly scan in reporting mode only. I were not to do
that how would I ever find those virusses that still reside in a mailbox?

You can follow the instructions in this KB article to turn off compression
so mail will be immediately purged when it's deleted:

We use IMAP a lot and I have f-prot scan all mailboxes once a week to

reported virusses are indeed the ones in the deleted mails.

I would verry much like a feature to force purging of all deleted mails,
either per mailbox or per domain. I could live with a button in the IMail
administrator, or what came in it's place. But maybe a command or a
commandline option so I can script it for the middle of the night might
be prefferable. As IMAP get's used more and more and people start storing
mail more, we will have more folders where mail almost never gets
deleted, so I assume this problem will only increase.

I have recently been blacklisted by CBL

IMail. It seems that there is
some way in which, for outgoing mail, Imail identifies itself as "mail."
followed by whatever domain originates the email. Since I have several hundred
domains, that means the server identifies itself as several hundred domains,
all at one IP address. To uneducated recipients, this looks like a spam

Several other users on the Declude list

Is there a way to shut off this

Hi,

There is a bug in the IMAP protocol in the 8.0x
series for which a fix was never released. The fix was only created for the 8.1x
and 8.2x releases.
Be aware there ARE exploits in the wild taking
advantage of this bug. We ran into them as well and as we need IMAP4 I had to
upgrade to 8.2x.

So your options are limited to either disable IMAP
if that is feasable for you or either upgrade to 8.22.

[IMail Forum] reg keys

Hi,

Looking at my IMail registry tree I see these keys.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Ipswitch\IMail]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Ipswitch\IMail\7.01]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Ipswitch\IMail\7.07]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Ipswitch\IMail\8.0]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Ipswitch\IMail\8.01]
@=""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Ipswitch\IMail\8.03]
@=""

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Ipswitch\IMail\8.05]
@=""

However, I'm allready at 8.22, with at least 8.21 in between. But there are
no keys for those versions. Should they be there, should I preserve these
old keys or can I delete them?

There is a version key under the Global key.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Ipswitch\IMail\Global]
"Version"="8.22"

Did this replace the old keys?

[IMail Forum] copy to action

2005-12-20 Thread Bonno Bloksma

Hi,

We want to keep track of all mail from our students
to the staff and vice versa.

All mail where the sender is part of student.tio.nl
and any one of the recipients (To, CC or BCC) is in tio.nl then a copy needs to
be sent to a special mailbox [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The same for mail coming from tio.nl where any
recipient is in student.tio.nl needs to be sent to another special mailbox, [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Of course the copied mail by the action itself
should not be copied to that mailbox, otherwise I'll have a nice loop.
:-(
Of course I don't want spam to be copied, define
spam as any mail that meets my deleteweight (SPAMDELETE tag).
Of course I don't want virsses to be copied (but
I'm using Declude Virus and AVAFTERJM is nowhere in my configs).

How do I set this up? I'll probably need
JunkmailPro (I've got Junkmail Standard) or can I do this with standard IMail
(v8.22) rules?

p.s. Still using Declude 2.06 but I'll switch to
3.x when I'll upgrade my mailserver to IMail 9 next year. I could upgrade
Declude to 3.x if needed.
