I think Dinesh has rightly picked up the purple colour which is present on the margins or centre of the leaves of this species. Of course other characters like deeply cordate base of the leaves; purple flower with dark throat and the calyx4-6mm also corresponds well. The reasoning behind my anticipation was - a) It is a twining climber found on roadside having ditches beside it. But a point to be noted is that those ditches are entirely dry b) The leaf blade is significantly broader and there is variation in blade-shapes c) Stem is narrower and hairy d) Stamens protrude outside of the corolla e) Anthers are purple f) Flowers are a tad smaller and appearance of the flower is a bit pentagonal than a perfect round shape Having been suggested by Mani Sir i too think now that it is also a Ipomoea aquatica, maybe slightly modified due to terrestrial adaptation. Yet a google search leads me to the following websites that contain similar leaves and flowers with very minute variations. Dinesh Hello Dinesh Ji, I will share my experience regarding the binomials , epithets and associated 'subtaxa'. The plant you have posted is indeed Ipomoea hederifolia and despite some hesitation expressed by some other members in the past as to whether dilute color forms exist , I will say that I am aware of dilute color forms existing within wild populations in both the New and Old World. The addition of the subtaxa 'lutea' and sometimes 'aurantia' , although not official was used by some growers and merchants in an attempt to give credence to the dilute color forms (even though not yet officially recognized) rather than use a description like my favorite yellow or orange dilute form. The usage of the lower taxonomic rank terms like vaiety and forma has to start someplace and I do not believe that it is only 'official' taxonomist who should be allowed to institute the usage of taxonomically correct terms. I supported the usage of recognized taxonomic terms rather than non-taxonomic terms because I thought it would be best in the long term regarding organizing some wild variants. Ipomoea lutea is a distinct and separate species from either Ipomoea hederifolia , Ipomoea coccinea or Ipomoea cristulata. There was some substantial confusion created when a marketing firm in Australia ( about 10 years ago) began to market seeds that they were

Re: [efloraofindia:110941] Nomenclature; botanical names versus common names
This kind of confusion occurs when revisioners rely only herbarium specimens. Since the color differences can't be seen in the herbarium, they tend to merge these otherwise distinct (by color) varieties. I don't know if Basella alba var. rubra occurs in wild, if not, it is a mere cultivar which doesn't require a formal combination and author citation. In that case the earlier treatments (B. rubra, B. alba var. rubra) become synonymous to B. alba as treated in Fl.China, GRIN etc. Another similar situation can be seen in Vitex negundo var. purpurascens Sivar. Moldenke. This variety can't be distinguished in the herbarium as it differs only by color (rather prominently) from its typica. Any revisioner may tend to merge these two by not finding strong taxonomic characters to distinguish. There may be several cases where plants distinct in the field but difficult to distinguish in the herbarium (such as Flacourtia indica (Burm.f.) Merr. and F. ramontchi L'Her.). The destiny of the status then becomes a matter of preference / opinion, to merge or to treat as different variety. And always a subject of debate. I feel if a 'variety' doesn't exist in wild, and originated by cultivation, it should be considered only a cultivar and not a taxonomical variety. I think there should be no harm in linking all common names associated with B. rubra with B. alba 'Rubra' and those associated with B. alba traditionally with simple B. alba L. If I am wrong, so be it, I'll plead guilty to being an ignoramus, I am certainly not a taxonomist. My problem is matching common names with 2 different bot. names considered synonyms. One ends up with contradictory names which cannot be synonyms since they mean different things... like Red-stemmed vine spinach vs White-stemmed vine spinach. Names with similar meaning exist in French, German, Spanish etc. for both. My approach is to find a bot. name that suits the horticultural rules. * Basella* *alba *L. '*Rubra*' for all the names referring to the colour red appears logical to me. Looking quickly at my favourite references: GRIN has B. alba = B. rubra Flora Europaea ignored B. rubra Flora of China considered both as different species, and so do many of the Indian scholars. The leaves on both Ipomoea hederifolia and Ipomoea coccinea can mimic each other ( I know because I have grown enough of them myself) but the pedicels of Ipomoea hederifolia always remain erect while the pedicels of Ipomoea coccinea reflex... So, in my experience trying to differentiate Ipomoea hederifolia from Ipomoea coccinea using any other part except the calyx and pedicel will lead you astray... regards, Ron

But this afternoon i chanced upon another member of this family what i think is Ipomoea bona-nox L. It is a big sized flower with equally big leaves. I think the ID is correct because - 1) my copy of “Plant Groups” (by H. Mukherji) describes it as “a large climber with white flowers” 2) it conforms the words “giant white moonflower” “vines and climbers” as have been described in http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/893/#b 3) as i plucked a flower-bud to force open its petals i noticed secretion of “milky juice” and “greenish midpetalline bands” as have been described at http://www.mpbd.info/plants/ipomoea-alba.php 4) But i may be wrong, because there is one similar post at - https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!searchin/indiantreepix/ipomoea$20alba/indiantreepix/0snjTZGmjSQ/7jBkq6TqMS0J that suggests otherwise. Now, it’s before you to validate the ID. Species : Ipomoea bona-nox L. ??? Habit : herb, trailer climber Habitat : wild, beside ditch Date : 14-March-2012, 4.50 p.m. Place : Kamarkundu (Hooghly), WB (images : 800x600) flower (forced open) flower (underside view) leaf and bud plant on the ground plant showing twining characteristic (but without any flower) Thank you Regards, Surajit Koley Google Docs makes it easy to create, store and share online documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Xenosegia.t from Chennai, Flowering April., at link below All leaves have the hastate base, The majority of leaves in this specimen also have a peculiar jagged apex. which i did not see in other images, except perhaps in thos of Rathnasabahapathihttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1RtZ26BtB3yChfLtlohazpFqxhZM_t6ioVPf4ZLdAOIA/edit-ji. [efloraofindia:110974] Re: Convolvulaceae Week :: Ipomoea hederifolia in Maharshtra
Hello fellow taxonomic enthusiasts, I have grown many strains of both Ipomoea hederifolia and Ipomoea coccinea from different parts of the world and here is my firm conclusion. The flower and leaf form may vary considerably in both of the species in question , so do not be fooled into attempting to Identify by either the corolla or the leaves...but , the calyx and more importantly the behavior of the pedicel is THE most important aspect to consider and I see erect pedicels in this set of photos. My conclusion is the plants shown here are Ipomoea hederifolia. Please be aware that the references and keys are most often written by people working in the field where precise measurements and clear closeup photographs of all relevant parts and at all stages of growth is rarely possible., so the keys of yesterday are somewhat obviated by the macro-photography of the computer age... The people who wrote many of the keys never actually grew the plants ( or studied them every single day watching very closely every single development of the parts at all stages of growth) but they were often forced to do what they could in the form of taking quick notes in the field as they moved on to the next series of plants they hoped to get to...quantity of information often took priority over quality and line drawing were what was possible long before before small digital cameras. I hope that my observations and thoughts may ultimately prove to be of value, regards, Ron On Monday, March 12, 2012 4:27:51 PM UTC-4, Dinesh Valke wrote: *Ipomoea hederifolia * L. - *ip-oh-MEE-uh* or *ip-oh-MAY-uh* -- worm-like; referring to coiled flower bud *hed-er-ih-FOH-lee-uh* -- with leaves resembling *Hedera* (Ivy genus) - ... Hello Dineshji, Should you ever have opportunity to take any clear closeups of the fully mature seeds, I am interested to correlate seed characteristics with plant morphology , even though others have been not yet been successful at this type of correlation. I find that the seeds of M.umbellata subspecies umbellata are very consistent in seed characteristics and resultant plant morphology...same is true for M.umbellata subspecies orientalis and I am at a loss why others are unable to see the consistencies... regards, Ron On Tuesday, March 13, 2012 1:57:58 PM UTC-4, Dinesh Valke wrote: *Merremia umbellata * subsp. * orientalis * (Hallier f.) [efloraofindia:110980] Re: Nomenclature; botanical names versus common names
Gurcharan ji The Plant List in 2010, but unfortunately it has more errors and omissions and unresolved names than one can cope with. I personally also find The Plant List to be unusable. OZmic I have always failed to understand how 2 different plants can have 2 different names which are considered synonyms. Because at some point in time the synonyms which are shared were thought to accurately represent both plants...they didn't have the instannt computerized tools available that we enjoy today...and still there are many fuzzy areas to be clarified... My problem is matching common names with 2 different bot. names considered synonyms A single plant can have a hundred common names because a common name can be applied by anybody...there is no authority to check what a 'true common name' is... Basella alba L. 'Rubra' for all the names referring to the colour red appears logical to me. I like the approach that the name should accurately describe some aspect of the plant as opposed to commemorative names which serve no practical botanical purpose at all but simply boost someones ego by having a plant named after them...commemorative names have no place in botany from my point of view. Vijayasankar This kind of confusion occurs when revisioners rely only herbarium specimens. Since the color differences can't be seen in the herbarium. Digital photography of Living Plants is far more valuable than dried out herbarium speciens which distort many features and characteristics leading to big confusion and chaos. Just some thoughts, regards, Ron On Monday, March 5, 2012 3:51:03 PM UTC-5, OZmic wrote: Dear new friends, Thanks to Dinesh (surname supressed), I think I have found a forum that will stimulate me. I have been waiting for some plant names in Indian scripts to appear on the www since 1995 when I first launched the MMPND. Pankaj (surname supressed) contributed a few but back then the fonts were not available. I had to create images with devices that did not produce the exact words, the result was poor. Since then there has been an abundance of words in various scripts. We are now facing a new problem. Nomenclatural identification. There is the official nomenclature - taxonomy, and there is the vernacular (common names). Not always matching each other. Photos help but without photo, one needs to start from a strong basis. Hence my work since the 1985's, 1995 online. My point is: I would suggest that we use the authority names with all botanical names, that is for example *Azadirachta excelsa* (Jack) M. Jacobs as opposed to just the usual *Azadirachta excelsa* . Why? because the bot. name on its own may mean different things when used by different authorities. In order to track down the synonyms in the search for a positive ID a complete botanical name is the first strong step. I suggest the first 2 sites in order to find those generally up-to-date complete bot. names: http://www.plantnames.unimelb.edu.au/Sorting/List_bot.html#sec.02 - trackedhttp://www.plantnames.unimelb.edu.au/Sorting/List_bot.html#sec.02 http://www.ars-grin.gov/ - tracked http://www.ars-grin.gov/ These will also supply bot. synonyms and common names...and more. They are valuable when doing searches online. 10 names will return nothing and one will return hundreds of pages. I have had plenty of experience since 1995. These 2 sites are built on years of experience started long before the internet was invented. Do take advantage of that experience. There are also other sites dealing with bot. names but usually not as focused on international communication. Many of those are linked in some way to these 2 anyhow. Regards to all. Michel
