Here’s what I envision happening.

A teacher puts together a lesson or group of resources for a lesson and
saves it (any type of file – including Interactive whiteboard, html,
responders, anything)

They go to a website that allows them to answer a few simple questions
(via dropdown) like grade, subject and type (resource, lesson plan,
notebook file, etc.)

Then a browse button that allows them to upload the file from their
desktop to a server.

The files that are on this server then populate a separate website that
is categorized by grade, subject and type so teachers can lookup what
other teachers around our district are doing. (no sense in recreating
the wheel)

We could also used this repository as a way to publish common
assessments. Would this be a sharepoint thing? Is anyone doing
anything like this?

Jeremy,

Sounds awesome! The Sonicwall we own is rated for home and small business and
is beginning to show its age and is bottle necking our internet at different
time of the day when the firewall CPU maxes out at 100%. Our need for more
internet increases yearly as more of the educational process moves to the
internet. We are finally moving toward providing remote access to teachers
and are looking at ways to extend the campus for students.

Add to that ICN internet outages and the whole mess begins to hamper the
educational process.

have freerider in the allowed domains, and I have checked to see that
the IP is not being blocked by the firewall. I used NSlookup to find the
IP for the site (75.127.118.212) and cross-checked with the blocked Ip

Re: [info-tech] Best Buy Return Policy

2008-05-27 Thread Bill Day
I have had similar problems with Best Buy. They even tried to tell me
that unless I purchased the extended warranty they would not take the
item back under any circumstances.

Mueller, Mitch wrote:

   Passing this on

   Snopes said this is true.

BEST BUYS BAD RETURN POLICY (THIS IS TRUE, READ BACK OF
RECEIPT)

Best Buy has some bad policies

Normally, I would not share this with others, However, since this could
happen to you or your friends , I decided to share it. If you purchase
something from, Wal-Mart, Sam's Club, JC Penny, Sears etc., and you
return the item with the receipt, they will give you your money back if
you paid cash, or credit your account if paid by plastic.

Well, I purchased a GPS for my car, a Tom Tom XLS from "Best Buy". They
have a policy that it must be returned within 14 days for a refund. So,
after 4 days I returned it in the original box with all the items in the
box, with paper work and cords all wrapped in the plastic just as I
received it, including the receipt. I explained to the lady at the
return desk I didn't like the way it could not find store names. The
lady at the refund desk said there is a 15% restock fee for items
returned. I sa id no one told me that and I asked how much would that
be. She said it goes by the price of the item and it will be $45.00 for
you. I said, all you're going to do is walk over and place it back on
the shelf then charge me $45.00 of my money for restocking!! She said
that's the store policy.

I said if more people were aware of this policy they would not buy
anything here! If I bought a $2000.00 computer or TV and returned it, I
would be charged $300.00 for a restock fee!! She said yes, 15%. I said
OK, just give me my money minus the restock fee. She said that since the
item is over $200.00 she can't give me my money back!!! Corporate has
to and they will mail you a check in 7 to ten days.!! I said "WHAT?!"
It's my money!! I paid in cash! I want to buy a different brand and now
I have to wait 7 to 10 days. She said well, our policy is on the back of
your receipt. I said, do you read the front or back of your receipt?
She said well, the front! I said so do I and I want to talk to the Manager!

So the manager came over and I explained everything to him. He said,
well sir, they should have told you about the policy when you got the
item. I said, no one has ever told me about the check refund or restock
fee whenever I bought items, from computers to TVs, from Best Buy. The
only thing they ever discussed was the worthless extended warranty
program. He said, well, I can give you the corporate phone number.

I called corporate. The guy said, well, I'm not supposed to do this, but
I can give you a $45.00 gift card and you can use it at Best Buy. I
told him if I bought something and returned it, you would charge me a
restock fee on the item and then send me a check for the remaining $38.
You can keep your gift card, I'm never shopping in Best Buy ever again
and, if I would have been smart, I w ould have charged the whole thing
on my credit card! Then I would have canceled the transaction.

I would have gotten all my money back including your stupid fees! He
didn't say a word!

I informed him that I was going to e-mail my friends and give them a
heads up on this store's policy as they don't tell you about all their
little caveats. So please pass this on. It may save you or your friends
from having a bad experience shopping at Best Buy.

From the Best Buy web page:

"Restocking Fee: A 15% restocking fee will be charged on opened
notebook computers, projectors, camcorders, digital cameras, radar
detectors, GPS/navigation and in-car video systems. A 25% restocking fee
will be charged on special order products, including appliances. These
fees apply unless the item is defective or damaged, you receive the
wrong item, or the fee is prohibited by law."

Re: [info-tech] Getting flash movies to DVD

2008-02-01 Thread Bill Day

Lance,
Here is my solution using Macs. use firefox for your browser and add the
unplug extension. This will allow you to save the flv file. Then either
play it with wimpy player

http://www.wimpyplayer.com/products/wimpy_standalone_flv_player.html

or use isquint

http://www.isquint.org/

to convert it to an mp4 and play with quicktime or itunes.

Re: [info-tech] Configuring Ubuntu to connect to Windows 2003 domain

2007-11-21 Thread Bill Day

Mark,
I have also been trying out Ubuntu and have the same problem. The only
way I have found to logon to our fileserver is to tunnel down using :

Places
network
windows network
(domain name)
(server name)
then a box pops up
put in username and password (do not change what is in the domain box)
then you can access your folder on the file server

I would like to just logon to the domain the same way the windows
machines do when they boot but so far haven't found a way to do that as
I know almost nothing about linux.

sorry I couldn't be of more help,

2007-10-04 Thread Bill Day
firefox has a web browser add on called unplug that lets you save
youtube video as an flv file (firefox and the unplug add on work on
mac's pc's and linux. vlc is a flv video player that is free and will
work with mac's pc's and linux. So use firefox to go to youtube click on
the unplug icon to download the file and then use vlc to play it.

or if you are using a mac you can download a free program called tubetv
that will search youtube for the video you want save the youtube video
and convert it for ipod and transfer it into your itunes all in one program.

Chad,
We use ours for file storage of large video files. It does have two usb
ports to attach drives you could use for backup.

Just a reminder that our Info-Tech meeting will be Thursday May 17th at
the Prairie Lakes Pocahontas office.

Our agenda will be a little more flexible than usual, but here is what I
have so far

9-10am - Open Discussion Time.
10-11:30 - Trouble Ticket Discussion. I will talk about the benefits
for all schools to use some sort of trouble ticket system. We will also
review ticket systems districts are currently using. District
presentations encouraged.

11:30 - Lunch - Open discussion on district summer plans. Lets talk
about what projects you will be working on this summer.

1-2 - Prairie Lakes updates on "Longhorn Roadshow" and Interop. We can
also use this time to discuss Web CMS systems.

2-3 - SquidNT - Web reporting, content filtering. Jason will talk about
how he has implemented SquidNT at districts to track user web history
and how to implement free content filtering for districts. Jason will
also cover how to install and configure on your network.

I do plan on having this available via Polycom and Video stream as well

Re: [info-tech] history--Safari

2007-05-14 Thread Bill Day

Jackie,
I have a way but it is not easy. first open history.plist
(When I click on it - it opens with omnioutliner)
look in the key, web history dates, lastvisited date.
it will show a number such as 200844812,9
you will need an app to convert this to a date that makes sense to us
poor mortals. you can get it from the website below. it is called
CFAbsoluteTimeConverter

http://www.hsoi.com/hsoishop/software/

run the converter and then put in the number from the history.plist
click on the convert button and you will see the date and time.

I hope someone out there has an easier way.

Unfortunately, I do not see a way to avoid the subscription based
services here. Our filter list has grown from 250 MB 2 years ago to
almost 750 MB this year, and still growing. We do not use all of
the filters, but it just shows how much garbage has been added to
the net in the last couple of years. These remote proxies have been
a real pain. Even if you block the popular ones like the ones you
mentioned, myspaceproxy1.com, etc., we have had at least
one student figure out how to set up a remote proxy on his home
computer. Try as we may, they will find ways around it

Take a look at atunnel.com.

Hopefully your filters block this one without any effort on your
part, but there seems to be a entire industry of webpages designed
to punch holes through most filters. I also did a search and found
out that a-ztunnel.com (all 26 of them created holes to use, as well
as 1-9tunnel.com). Did a search on similar site as atunnel.com and
found another 50 or so listed, some were blocked by the filter,
others needed to be added manually... I see a vision of the little
Dutch boy not knowing which hole to plug.. And I'm not even dutch.

Hopefully your appliance/software is a little smarter than mine.

All for now,

Re: [info-tech] Bios Password

2006-12-18 Thread Bill Day

In the good old days when I sold sanyo computers there were 3 ways to
reset the bios password. You could put a jumper cable around the bios
battery to drain it(very hard on the battery), some models had a jumper
on the motherboard near the battery that did the same thing, and all
models had a backdoor password that only the manufacturer was supposed
to know that they eventually gave me.

Subject: [info-tech] Realm Systems - 1-to-1 Solutions

Hello everyone,

Realm Systems is close to rolling out their "Pocket Server" product. I have
been talking about the Realm solution since Interop 2004 where I first saw
the product. Basically the "Pocket Server" is a computer about the size of
an IPod that utilizes the monitor, keyboard, and mouse on a host computer.
The Host computer can be Windows, Mac, or Linux.

If you are interested in learning more Realm would like to host a web
meeting sometime the week of April 3rd. During the meeting Realm will demo
the product and discuss the options to pilot the product in a K12
environment. I have been told that a Pilot project could start as early as
April 2006. Let me know if you want to participate and I will set up the
meeting.

Thanks.
