RE: [info-tech] Computer Monitoring Software

2005-11-08 Thread Kuhl, Douglas

Humboldt uses a hardware/software solution that is second
to none.  Not only can you use it to monitor their activity, it also gives
you valuable stats about your network and its health.  If you would like to
know more, please respond to my address directly and I will share more about
it.

Then to control the desktop of the computer we are using
Netop Remote for the Tech and Netop Student for the teachers.  It has
really improved the use of the network.  The students seem to be staying on
task more than before.  The constant sneakness has been taken away since
they know they can not get away with it any longer.  Also hardware
vandalism has seem to vanish, compared to last year as well.

[info-tech] Open Office: ANybody using it?

2005-11-04 Thread Kuhl, Douglas

I have been using Open Office 1.4 at Humboldt for all
teachers and students and have run in printing issues with it.  Does anybody
else use Open Office as their Office Suite?  If you do do you have any issues
with the printer name come in Open Office print box with circles, instead of
the back slashes; in turn not allowing the user to print from Open Office?  It
is worth stating to that its only Open Office that has this issue, nothing
else.  Also they are using Win 2000, with Clean Slate, Sophos Virus scan, and
the default profile was copied over by the set-up account to set-up the users
exactly the same.

Thanks Gang!

[info-tech] Does anybody use Instant Messaging for staff use for immediate communications

2005-06-08 Thread Kuhl, Douglas

I am thinking outside of the box with the thought of giving staff an IM to use
to IM immediate communications. Do any of you do this and if you have; what IM
software did you use, how did you implement it, how did you teach the staff to
use it, and was it beneficial or not?

Figured I wouldn't walk into a wall, but instead asks those that possible have
already so my own goose bump doesn't get to big.

Thanks in advance everybody for your comments.

RE: [info-tech] JMC & lunch

Humboldt does a student ID cards from Life Touch and then use a bar code
scanner, and they LOVE IT.

If you would like to see it in use, come to Humboldt and I'll show you. It

Quick question--

With our JMC lunch module, the lunch people are currently typing in
names as students go through the line. There are questions being
raised on whether charges are 100% accurate . . . .

Originally we had purchased the fingerprint scanners, but if hands are
sweaty, etc. it became somewhat of a hassle. It was quicker to type in
names. Somebody had talked to me about having a keypad in which
students type in their ID's, but I am also thinking it would be easy to
punch in another number. I have student pictures loaded into the
office program, but am I missing a way that can be linked with the
lunch POS program? What are some other options you are using?

Thanks
for this e-mail.  I am going to teach myself the Dvorak

up.  I searched on the internet and found two nice web-sites that discuss
the Dvorak keyboard printed out a PDF file of the key mapping and now as I am
typing this its in Dvorak. I think that is too cool.  Its going to take a

[info-tech] Exporting Outlook 8.2 for MAC Personal Address Book to Outlook 2003 for PC

2005-04-07 Thread Kuhl, Douglas

I have a head scratchier, at least for me. In Humboldt, someday, I will start
the replacement of all our Apple computers to PC's. The issue is that I hope
that I can export somehow their Personal Address Book Cross-Platform from their
MAC OS 8.6/9.2 that are running Microsoft Outlook 8.2 for MAC to their new PC
with Win XP running either Microsoft Exchange Webmail or either Outlook 2003.
Its this cross platform conversion that I have never done before. If anybody

The story is correct a former Humboldt administrator bought some older Dell GX1
computers from us. Even though the "Alert, cover has been removed" alert
message is displayed you should still be able to get into the BIOS by pushing
the normal F2 key command when the alert is on the screen. If that fails, you
could (at your own risk) update the BIOS to a newer version. BIOS are on the

RE: [info-tech] Food For Thought

2005-02-09 Thread Kuhl, Douglas
I for one am new to the Tech Coordinator position as of July 04 for Humbodlt; I
have learned many things while performing this role. Coming from corporate
sector as a Field Tech Supervisor, I truly appreciate those that have taken the
lead to "think-outside-the-box" like George. I applaud you for hosting it,
thank you!

I have seen some comments that seem to be out of frustration, I understand
wholeheartedly; but feel that our energy is best used to raise each other up,
not to inadvently tear down or discourage people. Like George mentions in his
message below I too wear both hats of a Technical Coordinator and a technician;
its the nature the position. I took this position on because what I see for
the future, not what I have right now. Its hard to step back at times, but us
mutli-role techs just have to hold-the-line; our users count on us to do it.
George started something good beyond what is already great from the AEA support
of technology. Also, in regards to the AEA Tech Support; I personally realize
the intangible value of Jason, Scott, and the others. They help keep the pulse
going in the entire AEA8. To you I say, Thank you!

Again, coming from the private sector to the public sector has been an
adjustment. But with the support that we can give each other through the AEA
Tech Coord meetings, sessions like George is coordinating, the list servs, the
AEA Support, and things we have not thought of yet; the only thing that we
really have to battle is the funding for our own districts. And frankly, that
the toughest part of being a Tech Coord in the public sector.

Thanks everybody for what you do for everybody. It can not be said enough.

Mike,

That's the exact point of having the users group meeting. It
would be entirely separate from tech coordinators meeting. There's
absolutely no pressure to attend or stay away. It's all voluntary. It
just happens that some of us running Windows Server thought it would be
a good idea to get together and share information period. I will have
the meeting on the 25th for those that are interested. Whatever happens
after that remains to be seen. Our roles have changed over the years,
more toward the technician side. Some of us are truly tech
coordinators, some are technicians, and some are both. That's where the
rub lies. There's two sides to our jobs, technician and tech
coordinator. They should be two different people but usually are not.
I need to serve both roles. The tech coordinator meetings are great for
that side but leaves out a lot of the technical side because of what we
use is so diversified. That's why I thought that having just Windows
Server get together on a voluntary basis would be the answer.
This whole thing started out by me asking if anyone would be
interested in attending a Windows server meeting and its gotten entirely
out of hand. Because I sent the request out over the listserv, its
gotten everyone else to thinking. That wasn't my intent at all. Just a
chance for a few people to get together and talk about Windows server.

George

I think we sometimes need to realize that not all of us only wear one
hat in the school and can spend that much time on one thing. I agree
that we need to open up the tech meetings to various topics that might
not be as important to some of the self-proclaimed tech gurus. There
are some of us that are not as advanced as others. I think I can speak
for some of the other smaller schools that are not as technology
inclined as others. In the defense of others, not all of us are able to
attend ITEC and other tech conferences due to the multiple hats we all
wear. I would love to attend ITEC, but don't really get the time off. I
remember on time that everyone complained that our tech meetings were
always about standards/benchmarks and things that no one was really
interested in. I guess I may be off base totally, but maybe we could
adapt our meetings and do some more realistic topics. Some of us still
use the 2 platforms and others may use only MACs or PCs. I figured that
I should express my opinion for the "not so techie techs".
If I have offended anyone I apologize. Our old Superintendent once
asked how come I did not request to go to tech meetings anymore. I
simply told him that what was being discussed does not relate to our
school. Not only because we are smaller, but also because we cannot
afford all the bells and whistles that others can afford.

I apologize the venting session, but I just felt that this needed to be

meetings to go over something that not everyone is using. To me, the
tech coordinators meeting is for introduction of different products and
other topics that apply to everyone. We use JMC and we don't have
school on March 11th so we would be willing to look into hosting that as
well. Maybe we could get someone from JMC to attend. Anyway, that's
food for thought.

George

Sounds like a Tech Coordinator's Meeting Agenda item to me.
I'd note that similar "users groups" might be beneficial. Consider JMC,
for example. Lots of users, lots of stuff that's unpublished.

RE: [info-tech] Paper usage

2005-01-26 Thread Kuhl, Douglas
Ya, go paperless by using Adobe Acrobat. I personally only print paper when I
need to file it in a book (eg. E-rate), but also save the file electronically
on our server. I believe that there really isn't a need for printing on paper,
unless it trully justified. We have set this up, but in the near future I am
going to highly recommend it as a district.

We are over-spending our budget for print supplies (paper and toner) at
an alarming rate. We are wondering if other schools in this area have this
problem or how they avoid over usage. Do you have policies in place to curtail
computer printing by staff and/or students? Do you have a fee at the beginning
of the school year for print supplies? Do you have monitoring software and if
so, which software? Do you have any suggestions to help us keep our printing
manageable?

You can send responses to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank you

How many people would want to attend this NCLB Curriculum Showcase instead of
having a Tech Meeting this month. We should be able to arrange carpools to
help on the travel to Des Moines.

I currently don't have anything setup for our January meeting yet.

Let me know.

RE: [info-tech] computer should also be their home computer?

2005-01-12 Thread Kuhl, Douglas

Prior to my Technology Coordinator days as the Technology Field Support
Supervisor I would tell people "I will, for $150.00/hour and expenses." And
surprisingly it shut-em up real fast when the word got out of my price. But if
someone was willing to pay I would have for the price.

Try that on the users.

Does your district bus mechanic also service staff autos and change oil? Do the
cooks provide food preparation service for staff? You've got to draw the line
somewhere with limited resources...Happy New Year to all also--

RE: [info-tech] AUP For Staff

2004-12-31 Thread Kuhl, Douglas
Sorry, about the jumbled english, its supposed to read:

"As I am still new to the public sector(keyword) as a technical coordinator;
what is an AUP and what does it do for you?"

Hopefully that "to" and "a" clarifies things.

This is proof that humans still have to think and are in control of the
technology; technology only does what it is told(program) to do.

Also HAPPY NEW YEAR!

RE: [info-tech] Fw: Enhance Your Network Security

2004-12-10 Thread Kuhl, Douglas

This
Enhanced Firmware is what we installed wasn't it.  On the Status of the
Firewall it has "TZ170 Enhanced" assuming that before we upgraded the firmware
that it wasn't "Enhanced".  That is why it looked different to
you.?

It looks like if you purchase a new TZ-170 before
the end of the year you will receive a free upgrade to the Enhanced OS.
I received this message after registering Humboldt's new firewall.  The
main benefit to this upgrade allows your district to have 2 Internet
connections.  In the event of an ISP Internet failure all traffic will be
automatically re-routed to the other ISP.

AV Coop part number 556 is currently $775 for the
TZ-170.  1 Year Support is only $125 and the unlimited Content Filter is
$227.68.  The TZ-170 should be able to support networks of up to 500
  workstations.

If you have any questions please let me

RE: [info-tech] Need your feedback

2004-11-09 Thread Kuhl, Douglas

Presently, any user(no matter whom) is to E-mail me with their issues,
while CC... their building Principal and what we call a Technical Liaison (just
a person to only hear their story ).  That E-mail is to contain the
information that I have requested them to give me to the best of their
ability.  And that is it period, except for the only exceptions which
are emergencies(which those are known as to what is or isn't).  That
way its all documented for all to see.  I have given the go ahead for
Principals or the lunch staff to contact me direct for those emergencies via
cell phone.  The reasoning for CC.. to the Principal and
Technical Liaison is to keep those individuals up to speed in their
building.

Fortunately for me, while in the private sector, I had a well developed
software written for tracking, logging, and data reporting of Service
Requests(SR).  I have been fortunate to be able to get that code and use it
here in my district.  Its working here, so I am actually in process of
getting all of our SRs entered into it.  The nice thing is that I will be
giving it to key individuals in the buildings to enter in these requests, then
all I do are the SR themselves and not the front end data entry.  It worked
get when I was in the private sector, it will do the same
here.

Hope
that gives you something to work with.
