[info-tech] New Position
Fellow Techies... I would like to say thanks for the past 8 years. Each of you has been an integral part of helping make Pomeroy-Palmer as technology inclined as it is. My wife and have accepted new positions at Armstrong-Ringsted. Kate will be a 4th and 5th grade teacher along with part time At Risk Coordinator. I will be taking the position of Athletic Director and middle school PE & health. I believe I will also be maintaining the school web site, so techincally I will still be a part of the group. Since we are still AEA 8, I will have to stop and observe Tim and Jon as they teach everyone how to schmooze a school board. Larry Kruckenberg (our superintendent), will be taking over the duties at Tech Coordinator. He is a Mac guy and might need some of your assistance. I told him how great you are at assisting everyone. I will also be helping maintain the school tech stuff remotely from Armstong. Once again thank you for the good times and assistance. I am sure all of our paths will cross again. Michael A. Linde Athletic Director / Technology Director Pomeroy-Palmer School (712)468-2268 We have decided against the Technokids for the curriculum. Re: [info-tech] Tech meet
Michael A. Linde Athletic Director / Technology Director Pomeroy-Palmer School (712)468-2268 I tell you what, no one can say that I am not good for something. I have torking people off down to a science. My intent was not to cause a problem. It was merely an attempt to let some of our techies know that there are still some of us less talented tech people that need to have more sessions like George brought up. In my 8 years here at PP, I have, and I know others also have, experience the "big time effect". That is some of our techs that have tried to push us little guys around and make us think our little issues are not important. Unfortunately I was not hired on my tech background like some of the FULL TIME techs. It is said that we are all equals..we are, just in different areas. The tech meetings sometimes do not meet the criteria of some of the smaller schools. That is totally understandable. We are in the minority. My email was not meant to insult anyone. As for the agenda of the meetings, it does meet the need of everyone ( which is impossible to do). I just hate to bring up some of the "simple problems" that will make the "tech gurus" laugh. And yes it does happen. They feel the same way that I feel about some of the topics. The flavor issue comes up. As for the tech meetings, who does not enjoy listening to Jon and George.that is free entertainmenthaha. Ok, on a serious note, I apologize for the email. The good news is that we now hav s SUP who is doig a great job at trying to budget our technology to get us up to speed. Never really had that guidance before. So all in all, a lesson learned that I should have just kept my mouth shut. For those of you who know me, I usually do. Whoops, my bad (as the kids would say). Have a great day. [info-tech] Food For Thought
I think we sometimes need to realize that not all of us only wear one hat in the school and can spend that much time on one thing. I agree that we need to open up the tech meetings to various topics that might not be as important to some of the self-proclaimed tech gurus. There are some of us that are not as advanced as others. I think I can speak for some of the other smaller schools that are not as technology inclined as others. In the defense of others, not all of us are able to attend ITEC and other tech conferences due to the multiple hats we all wear. I would love to attend ITEC, but don't really get the time off. I remember on time that everyone complained that our tech meetings were always about standards/benchmarks and things that no one was really interested in. I guess I may be off base totally, but maybe we could adapt our meetings and do some more realistic topics. Some of us still use the 2 platforms and others may use only MACs or PCs. I figured that I should express my opinion for the "not so techie techs". If I have offended anyone I apologize. Our old Superintendent once asked how come I did not request to go to tech meetings anymore. I simply told him that what was being discussed does not relate to our school. Not only because we are smaller, but also because we cannot afford all the bells and whistles that others can afford. I apologize the venting session, but I just felt that this needed to be said. If I have stepped over the line or offended anyone, please forgive me. I just needed to step up and help the little people. Have a great day. Mike Michael A. I had to break in the new week since msot of us start in a few weeks...remember..to the blonde techies..it is just a little funny... A blonde woman goes into a department store an tells the salesman she wants a pair of pink curtains. He assures her they have a good selection of pink curtains. He shows her many textures, prints and hues of pink fabrics. Once she has finally picked out a pink floral pattern, the salesman asked her "What sizes do you need?" She replies "Just 15 inches." He exclaims "15 INCHES?! What room are they for?" She says, "I only need one, and it's not for a room. It's for my computer monitor." RE: [info-tech] JMC
Jerry, we use JMC here and love it. We have implemented the network version and the teachers took to it right away. We use if for grades, gradebooks, attendence, Project Easier and running reports. My secretary took me off her hit list because we use to give all the teachers a floppy disk and then they did their grades and handed the disk back to her. Now they simply open the program and hit office to teacher and it gives them their students and schedules. When they are done they hit teacher to office and "POW", they are at her desk. She really enjoys it and I highly recommend it. The tech support has been for the most part very good. Mike Linde -- Michael A. Linde Director of Athletics & Technology Kindergarten - 4th Grade Phys. [info-tech] Adobe Go-Live
Hey all, we are having an issue with publishing adobe go-live files to the web. When we save the file in any format it is there for that day and it shows up. The next day when we come beck it is gone. I have searched low and high to find the file. Example...we are doing senior web pages. The index.htm for that page is there at first along with the jpegs and gif files, when we run it that day it is fine. The next day the index.htm file is gone and we are at square one. Just one of those little teck hs that make our day so confusing. Any ideas??? -- Michael A. [info-tech] FYI
Just in case there were any doubters. She said YES!! It was touch and go for a bit, but it all went well. I wasn't sure how would handle a "NO" answer in front front of the Carver Hawkeye fans and the ESPN audience. So all is good. Have a great turkey day!! Re: [info-tech] Contract talks
Well over here in hicksville USA, I am on a teachers salary. I am suppose to be half and half. Before this year I was teaching K-8 PE, Full Tech and Half AD. My contract read half tech and K-8 PE. I understand that PE is not the most stingy of a class prep, but it is still time. After much discussion I am currently FULL AD, FULL TECH/MEDIA and K-4 PE. I did gain some tech time during the day. The contract is now an extended 2 weeks for summer and fall work. During the school year I am on a "supposed" hourly unsigned contract that gives me 100 hours/semester (with decent pay) for tech work before school, after school and weekends. I told them the work I do on the odd times should be paid on a scale of what it would cost a "professional" to come and look at. If I do more than 100 hours, then it is just cause I am a nice guy. Actually it works out better. I cannot complain about that. As for LANCE.vacation..oh yeah that is when I get to go to Fort Dodge or Des Moines. I tell you, Katie and I really enjoy those times at Wal-Mart and the Mega Mall of Dodge. Ok, sorry for that bit of humor. See everyone Thursday. PSI have exciting news about this upcoming weekend...I will share it at the meeting. I think, for those of you that know me, that am "maturing a bit". Scary thought...maybe Geroge needs someone to be a body guard...I might be looking!!!!!! Mike -- Michael A. RE: [info-tech] pop up blockers
I have installed the GOOGLE toolbar and on it it has an option that will not allow pop ups. It works kinda slick actually. Just a thought. Mike -- Michael A. Re: [info-tech] Questions of student email
We also do not allow students to use email. In the past it has become more of a hassle trying to make sure and police the machines. If a student needs to use email for a college class or for some other useful reason, I set one up for them and tell them it may be monitored. This seems to be the best solution. We saw that when students did use email it was to the person next to them. We also have all students sign a AUP that informs them of the policy. It is almost impossible to stop all of the free email. If a student is caught using one they are first hit with a detention, if it happens again they lose all internet rights. This seems to work. Michael -- Michael A.
