[info-tech] Fw: [Iowalib] Printers for Sale and other government surplus

Subject: [Iowalib] Printers for Sale and other government surplus

The State of Iowa has signed up with a nationwide online auction service,
GovDeals.com, to sell state surplus equipment and supplies. The State
Library of Iowa has currently listed several printers, scanners and other
library related items on the website. The website runs similar to EBay and
other online auctions and requires a PayPal account or major credit card
for winning bid payments.

Libraries can pick up some good equipment very cheap! For example, we have
listed several HP LaserJet 1300 printers at the starting bid price of
$15.00! To view these printers and other items for sale, from the
GovDeals.com website home page, select Search by Zip in the upper left
section, then enter your zip code on the next page. This will narrow the
search down to within 100 miles of your location. Our printers are
listed under Computers, Parts and Supplies.
This is a national website and most items currently for sale are located
out of state. As more State of Iowa agencies begin using the site, more
items will be locally located. Register today as a bidder with the
following directions:

1.Go to http://www.govdeals.com
2.Select New Members Register Free
3.Register as a bidder
4.Registrants are manually verified which may take one to two business
days. You may expedite your registration by calling the GovDeals.com Help
Desk at 1-800-613-0156 and choose selection 1
5.Once you receive your temporary password from GovDeals.com and
successfully log in for the first time, you will be registered
GovDeals.com bidder!

2010-08-11 Thread Harriet Adams
IEC Update: Iowa Pricing on Rosetta Stone Classroom (Expires September 15th,
2010)FYI,

The IEC is sending the following information to superintendents and principals,
but you will also want to be aware of this information.

Due to licensing restrictions, the AEA Lending Library is unable to purchase
new copies and schools that need Rosetta Stone will need to obtain it
themselves.

Current pricing will expire September 15, but the IEC hopes to extend it - no
guarantees.

Questions can be send to Jerry Cochrane: see the information listed below or to
the Rosetta contacts listed at the bottom of this e-mail.

Thank you.

[info-tech] Fw: computers for districts

2010-05-25 Thread Scott Fosseen [Prairie Lakes AEA]
Are there any districts who would like up to 5 additional 5 yr old Windows
Computers? If so please read the message below, then send me a request if you
are interested and I will forward your info.

Thanks.

---

Hello, all. I am writing with an interesting request. A member of Senator
Harkin's staff contacted me looking for information on districts to which the
Senator may distribute computers as part of a Senate program. We tried
distributing them based on SES, which we thought would be a good approximation
of need, but many of the districts that were approached turned the offer down.
Our next effort is to try to locate districts that our AEAs know of that need
the computers. The Senator can offer up to five computers per district, and he
has 20 to distribute. The computers are five years old, and they are PCs.

I would really appreciate your help in distributing this request to the other
directors in your AEA and/or to your regional coordinators who might have
knowledge of districts in need of additional computers. Please provide my
contact information, along with a deadline of June 1 for getting back to me
with recommendations.

Thank you so much for your help.

[info-tech] Fw: Retraction: Promethean ActivInspire Software / New Low Price Only Good for Series 100 Board Customers

Subject: [iec-coop] [This may be spam]Retraction: Promethean ActivInspire
Software / New Low Price Only Good for Series 100 Board Customers

After I had sent the message below out to IEC customers, Jim Bryant at Haddock
Education Technologies called me to inform me that the $101.97 price for
Activinspire Pro v1.4 was Only for customers who were purchasing or had
purchased the Promethean 100 series whiteboards.

I did not offer those boards in our Spring 2010 AV Co-op Catalog because they
are an introductory whiteboard that does not include everything that an
education customer would want in a whiteboard (my opinion).

So, I am sorry to inform you all that the price for the Activinspire Pro v1.4
software did not go down in price, and remains at the original AV Catalog item#
28590 price of $307.97

I am working with Haddock to get a promotional / Microsoft Settlement price, or
another discount option that would give IEC customers a better value when
purchasing Promethean products at this time.

I will keep you informed of any updates from Haddock or Promethean concerning
this issue asap.

It currently is in the Iowa AV Co-op Catalog listed as catalog # 28590.
Current co-op price is $307.97 .

Now we have a NEW AV Co-op Spring Catalog Price of $101.97

That is not a typo ... we are now able to offer Activinspire Pro v1.4,
Promethean INSPINTLDVD for $101.97 delivered from Haddock Education

The new catalog number will be 28591.

Microsoft Aggregated School Agreement
Meet both your current and future needs, provide additional value to your
school and employees and save $$ at the same time.

Traditionally, as a school in the state of Iowa, you are eligible to purchase
Microsoft products through the Iowa Educators Consortium Select Agreement. With
the Select Agreement schools own the software license for as long as they want
to use the software. Larger schools can also participate in a School Agreement
in which the schools license the software on a yearly basis at a reduced cost.
However, for this year, the IEC and Microsoft have initiated a new Aggregated
School Agreement that allows all Iowa schools to combine their School
Agreement orders to better meet order minimums and provide every participant
the highest discount available from Microsoft. Benefits are noted below.

So, what is the School Agreement?

The Microsoft School Agreement is a comprehensive, subscription-based Microsoft
Volume Licensing program that provides a flexible, cost-effective way for
education customers to license the latest Microsoft technologies. It offers
streamlined administration, the convenience of a single annual payment and the
tools to accelerate software deployment. Preschools, elementary schools,
secondary schools, museums, public libraries and Boards of Education can all
participate in this program. With the simplicity of counting computers just
once per year, the School Agreement makes it easy for you to license all of
your computers, whether in a single school or throughout the entire district.
Each School Agreement includes the benefits of Software Assurance Membership
(www.microsoft.com/education/license/howtobuy/agreements/softwareassurance.aspx)
and one MSDN Academic Alliance membership (msdn.microsoft.com/academic/).
School Agreement customers may choose to grant Work at Home rights
(www.microsoft.com/education/license/manage/workathomerights.aspx) to faculty
and staff.

Benefits:

a.. Easy compliance. Because all of your school's computers and users are
covered throughout the subscription term, it's easy to ensure that your school
is fully licensed for use of the products you've selected.
b.. Low administration. Subscription licensing eliminates the need to track
licenses for individual School Agreement licensed products on every computer.
This is especially helpful for managing software assets in a decentralized
environment.
c.. Current technology. With subscription licensing programs, your users can
run the most current version of the software products included in your
agreement, and your institution automatically receives media for products that
upgrade during your agreement term.
d.. Simple budgeting and purchasing. One annual payment covers all of the
School Agreement products you've selected for the year

[info-tech] Fw: AV Co-op Info Concerning FCC Wireless Ban Issue

Subject: [iec-coop] [This may be spam]AV Co-op Info Concerning FCC Wireless
Ban Issue

To: All AV Co-op customers who have purchased wireless mic systems or
wireless products from the AV Co-op Catalog over many years

I started to look at this to find out if any of the wireless microphone
systems or wireless products that we have sold would fall into this
banned range, and then realized that it is going to be near impossible
for us to track down that list. We have been selling wireless for over 20
years and, hopefully, all of them are still working. From the recent
past, I don't think we sold any in the 700 MHz range, however, it will be
up to the end user to check to see.

I received this snippet of info from an email from Rex Lawrence at ECS,
one of our vendors in Davenport:

Wireless Microphones and wireless products operating in the 698 MHz to
806 MHz Range have been Banned by the FCC

Effective June 12th, 2010 frequency range 698 MHz to 806 MHz will be used
as a Public Safety Frequency and it will be considered unlawful to use
them for anything else. I understand that this is inconvenient for you
and your school. I brought this to your attention to keep you informed
and to let you know that many of the manufactures that we represent are
offering significant discounts to end-users that upgrade to new wireless
systems operating outside the banned ranged. My sales staff has a great
understanding of the situation, would be happy to inform you on whether
your current equipment falls within the approaching banned range, and
would be happy to let you know what discounts are being offered.

You can call ECS at 563-322-1525 for more information on this issue.

All of our other AV Co-op dealers, who sell wireless microphones, will be
happy to help you determine whether you have a unit that may be banned.

Iowa School Microsoft Settlement
General Purchase Voucher vs. Software Voucher

Many schools have asked why the Iowa Microsoft Settlement Claims Administrator
classifies some software as General Purchase Voucher and some as Software
Voucher. Listed below is the question sent to the Claims Administrator and the
reply.

Question
Many of the items on the Eligible list are software products but they are
listed with a General Purpose Voucher rather than Software Voucher. This is
creating a lot of confusion and concerns for schools. A sample list is attached.

We are asking that software be classified as eligible for the Software
Voucher or that we receive an explanation that can be shared with schools.

Answer
Thank you for your inquiry to the Iowa School Microsoft Settlement. Eligibility
is determined by the terms of the Court approved Settlement Agreement. Software
must fall into one of the defined categories listed in the Settlement Agreement
in order to be reimbursed using the Software Voucher. These categories are:
operating system software, word processing software, spreadsheet software,
presentation software, desktop relational database software, web-authoring
software, productivity suite software, encyclopedia software, and server
software. This information is also available on the program website at
http://iowaschoolmicrosoftsettlement.com/faq.aspx.

Another provision of the Settlement Agreement is that non-custom software that
runs on qualifying hardware, but does not fall into any of the categories

2010-03-01 Thread Buenz, Tim
Hi,

Please take some time to contact your legislators today. There are some much
needed changes proposed in SF 2290. Links are embedded below. Thanks!
Tim

According to today's SAI Legislative Update, note that two bills that provide
more flexibility in PPEL for technology are being considered by the Iowa House
and Senate. I'd encourage all to advocate your interests related to these bills
this week with your legislators.

Digital Storytelling in the Classroom
Everyone loves a good story. And some people are particularly good at telling
them. Storytelling is an ancient tradition and a fundamental part of culture.
Many kids like to share stories, as it provides them an opportunity to speak
from authority on a topic they know and love - themselves. As an educational
tool, storytelling helps define a narrative, can hone writing skills and
provide the foundation for many types of project-based activities in the
classroom.

Microsoft is excited to highlight a new set of resources we are making
available to educators to support digital storytelling in the classroom.
Designed conceptually as a teacher's guide to digital storytelling, we hope to
provide a core set of resources to help get you started with a digital
storytelling

Testimonials...
Thank-you for a terrific conference. I learned much
more than I expected and every presentation was appropriate, concise and very
well done. The networking opportunity was a real bonus. I kept thinking that I
wish I had this level of understanding prior to commencing an extreme
makeover of our technology infrastructure. Public schools' dollars are sparse
and must be stretched at every opportunity. Smart, relevant and robust
acquisitions are the best ways to do this.

I continue to be amazed at your ability both to
identify and to invite successfully an individual whose current role and
company make them the ideal keynoter to present at your event. In this case, it
does not get much more timely than to discuss the merits of web application
security. Congratulations! Bravo!

SA Roadmap Clarification

The very observant Bob Lillie of Willows Unified detected a hole in the
Security Agent
roadmaphttp://resources.lightspeedsystems.com/mailers/tipsandtricks/2010/01-20.html
appearing in last week's Tips Tricks. Bob wrote, I have hundreds of XP
machines that won't support 64-bit or Vista/7. If v7.02 will be the last
release, will the database continue to be updated?

Answer: Yes, both v8.0 and v7.02 draw from the same master database that is
continuously updated. While SA v8.0 will only support Vista, Windows 7, Server
2008, we will follow up with an SA v8.01 that will include the new scanner and
support both 32- and 64-bit XP. We just didn't want to hold up the 64-bit
version any longer since it is done. Sorry for the confusion.

Download Security Best Practices

As noted, we are working hard to improve the database, software, and support.
But you can help us help you. Download our Security Best
Practiceshttp://wiki.lightspeedsystems.com/x/5xSkAQ, which covers network and
desktop guidelines to substantially reduce the likelihood of any security
issues on your network.

ARRA Funding Making a Difference
Tips and Tricks

--

All-in-one REDCAT Recognized
Tech Learning magazine selected the REDCAT all-in-one
classroom audio system as one of the best education offerings of the past year.

Tech Learning judges named the winners after the
completion a rigorous 6 month evaluation and testing procedure. Criteria for
inclusion in the competition included products with innovative applications
that broke new ground as well as those that added significant enhancements to
proven education tools. A panel of more than 30 educators, who tested more than
100 entries across the country, chose the winners.

This year's awards have grown to include new hardware and
network categories, says Kevin Hogan, Editorial Director for NewBay Media's
Tech Learning Group. Our judges, which include stalwarts such as our
resident expert Joe Huber and the staff of Philadelphia's Science Leadership
Academy, put dozens of entries through their paces. To come out with their seal
of approval is a testament to the product.

Designing for the Teacher
The REDMIKE VC is the latest addition to Lightspeed's
family of microphones. Our engineers field-tested the REDMIKE VC, refining its
design with real educator feedback. Teachers have asked for a compact,
lightweight microphone that is simple-to-use. says Shaun Fagan, a Lightspeed
Product Manager. With the REDMIKE VC, we have continued that design
philosophy, adding volume controls to the microphone for simple thumb tap
adjustment. The tactile buttons are easily identified, so the teacher does not
have to interrupt teaching to view controls.

ARRA Funding Making a Difference
Making the most of educational funding is at the top of
everyone's list, especially in these difficult times. Our classroom audio
systems are one of the few researched based technologies that improve the
learning environment for both teachers and students.

Washington Township School District recently chose
Lightspeed's All-in-one REDCAT as their Classroom Audio Solution. The REDCAT
met ARRA the research based requirements and saved the district the additional
expense and time required for installation. Your local Classroom Audio
Consultant can assist you in selecting the appropriate system that will meet
the needs of your school.

Tips Tricks
The iR Media Connector is another Lightspeed innovation
that eliminates costly installation fees associated with classroom audio. Think
of the iRMC as a wireless router for your classroom audio sources. This compact
device wirelessly transmits audio signals to your Lightspeed Classroom Audio
System for crystal clear amplification.

When you have multiple audio sources, a powerful, wireless
tool like this makes a lot of sense. Simply connect the iR Media Connector to
your multimedia sources using the included patch cables and eliminate the need
to run cabling around the classroom.

l...@edu Administrator Workshop: Overview

What is covered in the workshop?

Looking for a great way to jumpstart your l...@edu project or evaluation and
help your school's administrators gain a core understanding of administering
l...@edu? The l...@edu Administration Workshop does exactly that. During
workshop, we will guide you through administering a domain you have enrolled in
the l...@edu program.

How is it delivered?

Typically requiring just 90 minutes, the workshop is delivered virtually using
Live Meeting, which allows desktop sharing enabling everyone to view the same
screen. As few or as many administrators as needed can participate and there
is no charge for the workshop.

Additionally, this is a hands-on workshop, so school administrators will
actually be the one's completing the steps during the workshop with the
guidance of the Microsoft team taking them step by step and ensuring successful
completion. This method is ideal as it ensures everything works in the actual
school's environment and not just a demo environment..

What's required to get started?

Prior to the workshop, schools will need to enroll a domain in the l...@edu
program, which can be completed at: http://www.liveatedu.com Note: Schools
are welcome to register a namespace that will be used for evaluating the
service (i.e. liveeval.schooldomain.edu). Additionally, schools will need
PowerShell and WinRM will need to be installed on a Windows Vista or Windows
Server 2008 machine.

from the IEC...Harriet

Please forward the email below to your technology coordinator listserv.

This is a bi-weekly Microsoft Education newsletter that most technology
coordinators will find useful. This newsletter will contain information
regarding workshops, webcasts, free curriculum material/tools, event dates and
more.

Joni Puffet from the IEC has requested an email list for all school tech
coordinators so they can be emailed this newsletter directly from Microsoft.
The problem with the current system is that the html formatting is sometimes
lost or a mess by the time it is sent on AEA listservs and reaches our
clients. The alternative is doing what we are doing for September - a link to a
pdf on the IEC website.

You have been asked to provide your own email addresses for us to share with
the education team at Microsoft. The email will be limited to this Microsoft
newsletter. Some of you have been hesitant to provide your contact information.
On the first email sent directly from Microsoft we could note why they are
receiving the email and that they can unsubscribe.

Please send your tech coordinator email addresses to Joni this week at
jpuff...@iec-ia.org or contact me - Jerry Cochrane - if you have reservations
about sending the list.

Iowa AEA Online Update: iCLIPART For Schools IP Firewall ExceptionsA message
from the IEC..Harriet

IOWA AEA Update: iCLIPART For Schools IP Firewall Exceptions
Fix For Broken Images

Customers who need to allow access through firewalls, proxies, filtering
software or other security features, need to add the following IP addresses to
their firewall exception list to ensure full, unrestricted access to and from
all iCLIPART For Schools products. Please note that not every institution
uses security controls (i.e. firewalls, proxies, filtering software, etc),
which may require these changes. If your institution uses these types of
security controls for outbound access, please have your IT department review
this email.

Problem:
When doing a search for content on http://schools.iclipart.com, all thumbnails
and large preview images appear broken, the user instead sees a page with x's
in place of the images.

Solution:
You will need to contact the network administrator responsible for maintaining
the Firewall and or Content Filter for your school or district. The following
exceptions will need to be added, in order to gain full access to
schools.iclipart.com.

Specific IP Addresses:
 204.17.34.102
 204.17.34.107

Web Domains:
 schools.iclipart.com
 static.iclipart.com

Iowa AEA Online Update: EBSCO IP Address Expansion

EBSCO is expanding EBSCOhost IP address ranges.

Customers who need to allow access through firewalls, proxies, filtering
software or other security features, need to add this IP address range:
(140.234.252-255) to their firewall exception list by September 30, 2009, to
ensure full, unrestricted access to and from all EBSCO Publishing online

institution uses these types of security controls for outbound access, please

2009

Dear Educators and Technologists,

To take advantage of this opportunity, you’ll need to register by July
31, 2009. All products must be packaged according to the instructions and
collected by August 31, 2009. Remember, you must recycle a minimum of 25
pieces (computers, printers, or displays) in order to participate.

Go to http://education.apple.com/contact_me/recycle/index.php? e=5539881
to register now.
In addition to the 25 pieces, we accept all brands of the following
equipment: computers, monitors, laptops, printers, fax machines,
scanners, desktop-size copy machines, CD drives, hard drives, TVs, VCRs,
projectors, overhead projectors, networking equipment, cables, keyboards,
and mice.

This offer expires July 31, 2009, so register now—it’s never been easier
to go green.

Thanks.

Mike Julie
