[IRCA] Fwd: DX-Tuner site operator info
FYI to all: I've been running a DX Tuners radio at my QTH for about a year, and just received this email. Some of you may be familiar with the DX Tuners network - there were several dozen radios all over the world that were accessible for tuning remotely over the Internet. It allowed the listener to listen live to the radio via streaming audio. It was a subscription-based system, very sophisticated (by all accounts a professional-class operation) and seemed to be doing well. There were a number of Icom radios (some R75s but many PRC1000s) so you could tune FM-band as well as BCB and SW from many different countries. Just last week I spent an hour on a virtual DXpedition listening to AM stations from a receiver in Germany. It was a lot of fun. As a node operator, I did get free access to the system, which was my main reason for setting up a radio on the system (I had my Icom 718 set up as a receiver). I know several people on the AM DXing email lists used DXTuners to check trans-atlantic stations from radios in Europe, and verify what they were hearing here in the US. I did that once to give me a definite ID on Turkey from Pennsylvania. Given the direction of radio listening in this country, I looking forward to using it more in the future if US radio reception started to tank. Alas, another aspect of the hobby is now gone. On the upside, my Icom is now free for me to play ham radio with :-) Brett Saylor Central PA Begin forwarded message: From: dxtuners.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: April 20, 2007 2:51:41 AM EDT To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: DX-Tuner site operator info Dear DX Tuner Site Operator. I have briefly been looking for a replacement administration for DxTuners and I have gotten a few offers. Thank you! However, I have found the platform too complex running without my help, so it is with much sadness and sincere regret that I have decided to close down the network. You are free to shut down your hardware at any point. There will be no stand alone solutions provided by me or my company as we are winding up the business. I would like to thank you all for contributing to the network over the years. 10 years is a long time and some of you have been with me for most of that time. Again thank you very much. [IRCA] But they said HD was FREE!!!!!!
iBiquity to introduce HD Radio subscriptions At NAB2007 in Las Vegas, iBiquity Digital has revealed that they've selected NDS Group to provide the industry's first conditional access solution for HD Radio. NDS Group is the same company that provides the system enabling DirecTV and Cablevision to offer pay-per-view and other opt-in services for consumers. Called RadioGuard, NDS Group's system encrypts content before it is transmitted over the airwaves, then decrypts it once the radio signal has been received and verified. We believe this will be key for monetizing HD Radio, said Tom Rucktenwald, director of data applications security for NDS. Services that could be made possible through RadioGuard include pay- per-listen options for live concerts or other events, improved reading services for the blind, private channels for emergency services, and free opt-in events sponsored by advertisers. So HD Radio will not just be competing with satellite radio for listening time, but soon will be competing for subscription dollars as well. RadioGuard-capable radio receivers are planned to be introduced to the market by the holidays. http://www.orbitcast.com/archives/ibiquity-to-introduce-hd-radio- subscriptions.html ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Colin- Why worry??? It's just 1984 come to it's completion. If it's not where you are at this time, it will be. Willis Ofcom is a company in the UK. The U.K has one video camera being used for surveillance for every 12 people unlike the U.S. and Canada which has about 1 camera for every 250 people. I am not surprised that there are corporate forces at work eager to end conventional distant or open broadcast listening as soon as possible. ___ IRCA mailing list IRCA@hard-core-dx.com http://montreal.kotalampi.com/mailman/listinfo/irca Opinions expressed in messages on this mailing list are those of the original contributors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the IRCA, its editors, publishing staff, or officers For more information: http://www.ircaonline.org To Post a message: irca@hard-core-dx.com

Willis Old Fort, TN Oh Experience DX'ers, Laying in bed last night listening to 990, I heard a station slide up out of the noise. Re: [IRCA] But they said HD was FREE!!!!!!
What a crock. Again they are talking out of both sides of their mouth but what else is new. They may claim they can compete with subscriber driven satellite radio but they fail to realize that both XM and Sirius are not breaking even. This is because most people will not pay for radio. If they were making money and seeing a nice profit, they would not be talking about a merger. As always they just don't get it. They should quit wasting time and money on HD radio and improve the overall content of regular over the air broadcasting. Promote it the right way and the audience will be there to check it out. [IRCA] OCSP DX Notes 4-20
Nothing noteworthy to report this morning as far as DX signals were concerned. The NHK powerhouses and HLAZ were in well, but condx seemed average overall. I spent most of the time checking out the prototype phased vertical array (2 x 20 ft. High x 134 ft. Spacing, E-W). So far it seems to work well, with 30-35 dB F/B across the band. The drop in the noise floor when the switch is flipped to favor reception from the west is impressive-- 10-12 dB, which allowed me to get audio on Tahiti 738 and Tonga 1017 last night. Neither had co-channel QRM or much splatter, but with the noise floor drop, the audio was clearly there. The panadapter of the SDR-1000 and highly accurate signal meters are very useful for comparisons like these. The PA0RDT mini-whip is on the 30-ft mast again, and is a great all-around MW omni-directional antenna, when DXing away from noise sources. Otherwise, it picks up the slightest RFI noise in the vicinity. I'm also trying a new Quantum Loop Ver. 2.0+, which is impressive. Now I know why these are so highly regarded. I'm able to put a 50 dB null on the local Aberdeen station. Before sundown I'm going to change the active vertical array to two delta loops in the same plane. There's anecdotal evidence that the nulls are better than with the vertical elements. I may put out a E-W beverage too, if I don't run out of time from doing other tests of gear. This was another week with little or no sunspots. Most days had 0 spots, but from time to time a new sunspot will appear, but only briefly. If you go to the table of sunspot readings at, http://www.sec.noaa.gov/ftpdir/indices/DSD.txt you can see the brief interruptions in the string of no-sunspot days. Go to http://www.spaceweather.com and in the upper right corner you can dial back to see Sun pictures and reports from any day. For instance, there was a brief sunspot appearance on April 14, and if you go back to the April 15 issue of Spaceweather.com, it notes the brief appearance. Expect more of the same conditions, with little or no sunspots. Eventually this year we should reach a point when the only place for solar activity to go is up. Today, April 20, we may see unsettled geomagnetic activity. Geophysical Institute Prague expects unsettled to active geomagnetic conditions for April 20, unsettled for April 21-22, quiet to unsettled on April 23, and quiet April 24-26. The U.S. Air Force predicts April 28 as the next date for active geomagnetic conditions, with a predicted planetary A index of 25. Paolo Battezzato, N1XOI, who lives in Westford, Massachusetts, northwest of Boston, sends in an interesting report from April 1 of a PSK contact, and he says this is no April Fools joke. Paolo writes, I was working PSK31 around 22:45 local time when I saw a very weak signal on my Digipan waterfall display. I clicked on the trace and read Pablo, AY7X. I'm intrigued by the call sign, so I try to reply to his CQ and after few attempts I contact him. Imagine my surprise when he tells me he is with a DXpedition in Tierra del Fuego, in FD55sd. Not bad from my FN42go grid, almost 11,000 km. By the way, did I mention I have a resonant 20m attic dipole and I was transmitting with just 3 Watts? Great story, Paolo, and I understand many PSK operators are using simple gear with low power and even indoor antennas. In my experiments with PSK I've been amazed at the signals it digs out of the noise. Barry Roseman, W0LHK of Stilwell, Kansas mentioned that during the recent N8S expedition to Swains Island, he worked them with 80 watts SSB on several bands, including 12 and 15 meters using a 60 meter inverted vee pressed into service. Ken Kopp, KK0HF of Topeka, Kansas sent a link to an article from Physicsweb that proposes a much more modest prediction for solar Cycle 24 than the big one predicted last year by Dikpati, et al. This article predicts a cycle 35% weaker than the current one. Read it at, http://physicsweb.org/articles/news/11/4/7/1 and as Ken wrote, Let's hope these guys are wrong! Jeff Lackey, K8CQ of St. Simons Island, Georgia is living with CCR restrictions limiting his antennas, but he may have happened upon just the right magic rain gutter configuration. Two weeks ago Jeff wrote, I use a gutter antenna and 100 watts. The gutter has five downspouts, spaced over approximately 90 feet distance as the gutter zigzags around the back of the house. I feed the center downspout against a ground plane of 16 ground radials. Since January 1, 2007, I've worked 33 zones in 121 countries. The gutter loads up fairly well even on 160m where I've worked 34 states. I've worked Chagos on 80m, about 10,000 miles. Yesterday I worked Swains Island on 12m and 17m. And a couple of weeks ago I caught Kermadec. So the DX is there. You just have to be patient. That is quite an inspiration at the bottom of the solar cycle.
