[IRCA] Grayland19 - Feb. 18-23, 2019

2019-03-05 Thread Bill Whitacre
Thanks to a last-minute ‘flash sale’ from Alaska Airlines I made my 19th trip
to Grayland, Washington a couple of weeks ago. Propagation conditions were not
great but following the motto “everything’s better at the beach” I persevered.

You can see and hear what I heard on this webpage:
http://realmonitor.com/am_logs_grayland19.php

I’m still going through the wav files but there’s enough on the webpage to give
a flavor of what things were like.

Antenna was the usual 160’ DKAZ at 287 deg. literally ‘on the beach’ and in the
puddles that collect during winter months on the back-beach. I’m sure my
splashing around provided entertainment to the large number of razor clammers
on the beach.

Highlight so far is DWXI, the Delta Broadcasting System, on 1314kHz, a new
Philippine station for me from Grayland:

http://realmonitor.com/grayland19/190220/1500/philippines-1314.wav

Enjoy and good DX to everyone.

[IRCA] Furlough DXpedition Jan 14-18, 2019

2019-01-25 Thread Bill Whitacre
While on furlough I visited Waters Edge, near Fleeton, VA for a few days about
a week ago. Waters Edge is right on the Chesapeake Bay and usually has good
reception up and down the east coast of the U.S.

Depending on how one points the DKAZ antenna that I normally use, stations from
New Brunswick to Brazil can be heard … as well as some TAs.

Highlights this trip were Barbados on 900kHz, Panama on 860kHz, Voice of Nevis
& St. Kitts also on 860kHz and a new Dominican station for me, Radio Dial, on
670kHz.

I’m still reviewing Perseus wav files but you can see/hear what I've heard so
far on this webpage:

http://realmonitor.com/am_logs_we8.php

Oh yea, the antenna used was a 160’ DKAZ aimed at 130 deg.

[IRCA] QH12 DXpedition - November 10 - 17

2018-11-26 Thread Bill Whitacre
From November 10 - 17 I was in Lubec, Maine for the QH12 DXpedition, named after
the place I stay - Quoddy House.

I had three DKAZ antennas up during most of the week - one at 115 deg. for
LatAm/Africa, one at 35 deg. for Europe and beyond and one at a nearby location,
Lubec Bay Cottage, at 80 deg. for whatever I could catch. All used Vactrol
termination.

I use Perseus receivers and have gotten far enough into wav file review to give
a picture of what was heard:

http://realmonitor.com/am_logs_qh12.php

The highlite was some of the best TP reception I've had at QH with many carriers
and audio on 747, 774, 945, 972, 1089, 1098 [Marshall Is.],1206, 1287 and 1566
kHz.

For those unfamiliar, I don't keep a written log. The webpage above IS my log.
Every 'logging' is an audio sample. The table presented is sorted by frequency
along the left side with column headings on the right corresponding to the
antenna, date and hour of the log. You can click on the round play button to
hear the corresponding sound sample.

In the heading area of the webpage there are links to ’summary stats’, a map of
my loggings, geomagnetic conditions during the week and a ‘quick tour’ of the
shack
and antenna.

Enjoy!

[IRCA] TP carriers in Maine Nov. 25

2018-11-25 Thread Bill Whitacre
Lots of TP carriers on the QH KiwiSDR in Lubec, Maine this morning around
1015UTC.

http://qhkiwisdr.proxy.kiwisdr.com:8073

Audio on 972, 981, 1377, 1566

Carriers only on 1422, 1413, 945, 1458, 1017, 1134, 1287, etc.

Wish I were there again with a DKAZ up rather than the 800ft. BOG that I left
behind.

Re: [IRCA] TPs on Nov 16 from Lubec, Maine

2018-11-16 Thread Bill Whitacre
Hmmm … maybe it really IS a ‘zero sum’ game — we can’t both have good DX at the
same time?! ;-)

I’m getting payback now as I struggle through gale-force winds driving a nasty
mix of wintry stuff to take down the 115 deg. DKAZ to have one less thing to do
tomorrow. Oh yea, it had already blown down anyway — not just collapsed masts
but ‘blown down’ still erect but horizontal. Tie wraps busted clean off.
After I warm up and dry off a bit I’m going out to finish and try to put the 35
deg. [‘TP Magic’] antenna back up. It’s just de-telescoped.

Fingers crossed … as soon as they thaw out.

[IRCA] TPs on Nov 16 from Lubec, Maine

2018-11-16 Thread Bill Whitacre
Quoddy House, Lubec, Maine - November 16, 2018

Korea on 972 was again the most steady of the TPs heard after 0900utc here in a
snowy Lubec, Maine this morning. Star of the morning though was 1089-China
doing very well against WBAL on 1090.

Signals seemed best from straight over the pole to China and Korea rather than
Japan.

Here, in no particular order are some sound samples:

Japan on 1287 @ 0931utc
http://realmonitor.com/QH12/181116/1287-0931-Nov16.wav

Japan on 774 @ 1018utc
http://realmonitor.com/QH12/181116/774-1018-Nov16.wav

Korea on 1566 @ 1018utc
http://realmonitor.com/QH12/181116/1566-1018-Nov16.wav

Korea on 972 @ 1020 and 1021utc
http://realmonitor.com/QH12/181116/972-1020-Nov16.wav
http://realmonitor.com/QH12/181116/972-1021-Nov16.wav

China on 1089 @ 0954 and 1015utc
http://realmonitor.com/QH12/181116/1089-0954-Nov16.wav
http://realmonitor.com/QH12/181116/1089-1015-Nov16.wav

I wrote down several other frequencies with possible audio during a 1030utc
scan - 963, 1017, 1098, 1188 and 1215. TP DXers will recognize those as either
China or Korea frequencies. We’ll see what further listening will provide.

For reference, the previous 10 days of geomag indices can be viewed on a
running graph I keep:

http://tivodxer.com/jpgraph_example3b_multi_y_axis.php

Note A and K indices have fallen way down and Dst has gone up above zero. All
are ‘good things’ to trans polar DXers.

[IRCA] TPs in Maine This Morning - Nov. 14

2018-11-14 Thread Bill Whitacre
I had the good fortune of having my antenna(s) survive an all-day-rain
yesterday and a huge increase in wind and decrease in temperature overnight AND
being part of a TP opening this morning from Quoddy House near Lubec, Maine.

Starting as soon as the strongest TA carriers faded away others remained. This
was the loudest I’ve ever heard these here in Maine and I’m sure there are
others to be found. I know I have good signals from Japan on 774 and 747kHz,
for example.

---

Korea on 972kHz is one of the most common [not really anything ‘common’ about
it] TPs here near solar minima:

http://realmonitor.com/qh12/972-0933-Nov14.wav

—

Not so common is China on 1206kHz in Korean:

http://realmonitor.com/qh12/1206-0953-Nov14.wav

—

Also not common is Japan on 1287kHz:

http://realmonitor.com/qh12/1287-1014-Nov14.wav

—

I have a KiwiSDR up and running and Quoddy House for the duration of my visit
[Saturday AM]:

Enjoy!

Sounds like Korea to me Jim. I’ll take a look for the sign ons from India —
it’s not that common here.

972 was loudest, starting at <1000utc then 1206 [China in Korean] and then the
Japanese on 774 & 747 came in well later.

Sunrise is around 1100utc here so things are pretty much done as I write this.

[IRCA] Waters Edge DXpedition - Oct. 18 - 21

2018-10-28 Thread Bill Whitacre
I visited the Waters Edge HomeAway rental property near Fleeton, VA for the 6th
time from Oct. 18 - 21. Results are on this webpage:

http://realmonitor.com/am_logs_we6.php

A 160’ DKAZ was used pointing at 135 deg. -- further south than I had planned
thus I missed most of the fine TA loggings my friends at LBI enjoyed the same
weekend.

I also was reminded that the DKAZ is a wonderful ‘deer trap.’ On two
consecutive mornings I woke to find one of my masts BROKE due to a deer
incursion.

Conditions were far from auroral so I was mostly limited to the usual
collection of stations from PR, DR, Cuba and Colombia.

A couple of decent catches did struggle through the mundane to reach my antenna
though.

On 1290.3 kHz I had a re-log of Radio Timbira do Maranhao from Brazil:

http://realmonitor.com/we6/181019/0100/brazil-1290.wav

And on 828 kHz Magic 828 provided a weak but readable signal ...

http://realmonitor.com/we6/181019//south-africa-828.wav

… that I was not able to // with their on-line feed due to a really crappy
internet connection but recognized the voice of a rather distinctive male
announcer from a previous logging in Lubec, Maine last November ...

http://realmonitor.com/qh10/171113/qh100/2330/south-africa-828.wav

Fortunately, the weather was nice and my wife and I had a nice break from DC.

[IRCA] QH11 - Lubec, Maine over Memorial Day

2018-06-06 Thread Bill Whitacre
My wife and I visited Quoddy House near Lubec, Maine for the Downeast Birding
Festival over Memorial Day weekend. Nobody who knows anything about radio goes
to Quoddy House without putting up an antenna and giving DXing a try.

I put up a 160’ DKAZ pointing 100 deg. and am working through Perseus wav files
from May 26-28. So far the highlights are Bolivia on 960, Mozambique on 1206
and about 20 Brazilians.

Conditions were not the greatest but anything is better than listening from my
noise-ridden, non-coastal Alexandria, VA home.

You can see and hear what I heard at this webpage:

[IRCA] DXpedition to Ditchley, VA April 22-24, 2018

2018-04-30 Thread Bill Whitacre
While my wife was promoting a book in Rochester, NY I made a 2-night visit to
Ditchley, VA for a short respite from our QRN-ridden suburban DC home.

With a 160’ DKAZ pointed at ~ 135 deg. true North and fairly low levels of
noise I tried to make the best of pretty mediocre conditions.

The one exception was South Africa on 729 and 828 kHz at sunset on April 22nd.
Cape Pulpit on 729 was carrying English language religious programming and for
the first time ever I pulled a web stream parallel trick on Magic 828 with a
George Michaels song. Thank goodness I brought along a couple of HF+ radios to
listen live while the Perseus was monopolized by Mestor.

Otherwise the fare was a good collection of stations from Puerto Rico and
Dominican Republic but a disappointing showing from Brazil.

Still going through the wav files but here’s a web page that gives an
accounting of what I’ve heard so far:

In re-reading my WRTH article from 1981 I’m reminded that the XCR-30 also went
to Europe a few times. Pretty sure I travelled without the dozen or so D-cells
it craved. Evereadys didn’t catch on fire like LiOn cells but they were just
as heavy. ;-)

Not so long before I joined VOA, in 1982, story goes that monitors lugged 51J’s
along on reception surveys. Can you imagine?

Thank goodness for the Sony 2001 and later 2010!

Here’s a cut from Radio Cook Islands from July 1980 recorded, as far as I can
recall, on a Barlow-Wadley XCR-30 [which I still have] and a cheap little
portable cassette recorder at the Orange Grove Lodge about half way around the
island from the airport:

http://realmonitor.com/Cook_Islands_Jul1980.wav
<http://realmonitor.com/Cook_Islands_Jul1980.wav>

Out of RA news with ID mentioning both 630 and 5045 kHz.

I almost forgot all about these tapes and the article I wrote for the 1981 WRTH
about my visit.

Thanks for stirring up some happy memories Gary & Guy!

Now if I can only FIND my copy of the 1981 WRTH!

2018-03-31 Thread Bill Whitacre
Hi Gary. Found the Grayland cut from Taiwan on 1143kHz on Feb. 21 @ 1430utc
that has them beginning their Tagalog progam:

http://realmonitor.com/grayland17/180221/1430/taiwan-1143.wav
<http://realmonitor.com/grayland17/180221/1430/taiwan-1143.wav>

I love the guy’s opening - “C’mon, c’mon turn your radio on!” Could be a cheer
for MW DXers rolling out of bed to check the bands!

Indeed it does Gary. Just out picking up some limbs shook loose by a ‘big
wind’ we had here a few weeks back and found one part of my 4-element Wellbrook
phased delta loop on the ground — chewed off by my neighbors wagging maple tree
limbs.

Fixed it and gave a listen to see how it was working to find even more local
noise than when I last used it over a month ago.

I long for another trip to Grayland, Lubec or even the eastern shore of
Maryland where we can at least find much reduced levels of QRN and a shot at
some DX across a pond.

2018-03-25 Thread Bill Whitacre
That audio’s kind of rough Gary. Wouldn’t hazard a guess at the language -
though it’s NOT Mandarin. ;-)

In going thru Grayland wav files from a month back I found 1143 going out of
Mandarin and into what appeared to be Tagalog or some other Philippino dialect.
I can’t recall the time now.

Yet another station using MW for its ‘international’ service apparently.

[IRCA] Grayland DXpedition - Feb. 18-24, 2018

2018-03-01 Thread Bill Whitacre
I made my 17th visit to Grayland, WA between February 18 - 24, 2018. Since the
Grayland Motel closed a year ago I have had to find an alternative location for
DXpeditioning. Such a place exists, albiet a bit more expensive and with a bit
less land to work with, just a couple of lots down the beach called Casa Sea
Esta - a HomeAway rental. For nearly the entire time I used a 160' DKAZ antenna
aimed at 300 deg. true North errected 'beyond the berm' on the grassy area of
the beach. Results so far are promising though I wish I had pointed the DKAZ a
little further south given its broad back null and equally broad front lobe. I
was not nulling Seattle & Vancouver, BC stations near as well as Portland.

I'm just starting the wav file review process but the hightlight so far is
Cambodia on 918kHz. There are also several Philippine stations in the wav
files, including a new one for me on 1611kHz. Lots of Japanese and Alaskans
round things out.

You can see and hear what I have reviewed so far at the following webpage:

Re: [IRCA] TP DX in Seattle on 22 Feb

Weird here in Grayland too Bruce. Difference being that the morning ended with
oddly good Aussie reception. Heard the ABC news theme on 837 @ 1700! Kind of
unusual, no?

Not sure what else is on the wav files but I suspect more of the same.

Asian reception was quite unremarkable.

I think Nick had similar conditions up in Gabriola.

I listened to 846-Kiribati sign off at 0900utc. Nice signal and wonderful

2018-01-18 Thread Bill Whitacre
OK, you started it. Here goes … I remember the time my dad brought home a
Nems-Clark field strength meter from WILS where he was CE and we stood in the
basement, tuned to 640, nulled the Cuban on-freq and got KFI! Probably 9 or
10pm EST from Lansing, MI. I’ll bet they never got a DX report with a field
strength measurement before! ;-) As I recall it was a 200-300
microvolts/meter.

That QSL was my ONLY DX stamp! Nice letter from the CE too.

I was about 13 years old and hopelessly hooked!

“Those were the days!”

Did someone already say that?

Re: [IRCA] YAHOOOOOO…NEW STATE # 48 on AM-BCB This morning!!

2018-01-18 Thread Bill Whitacre
MM = Monday Mornings when stations used to s/off and do ‘testing.’ Back in the
day you never knew exactly what you’d find - listen for test tones and hope
that an ID came. It’s also the time CPCs were often scheduled. CPC = courtesy
program committee who would coordinate with broadcasters to do tests for MW
clubs or at least give advance notice of their PoP - proof of performance that
used to be carried out on MMs.

Great fun!

I did MMs and the ‘CPC trail’ for a few years back in the early/mid-70’s from
Lansing, MI with a Worcester loop in the BASEMENT on a Hallicrafters SX-96 with
a digital frequency display I made.

Man, that was fun! I had no idea until I came back to the hobby in 2009 how
much ‘fun’ it was!

Oh and sunset was a riot! I used to sit on 1580 after our ‘local’ WRBJ in St.
Johns, MI signed off and get a new station every 15 minutes many nights! One
night I got all the way to Ceres, CA!

Enough time travel. Back to figuring out when I can retire! ;-)

Re: [IRCA] more TA hints

2018-01-18 Thread Bill Whitacre
Interesting Nick. Lithuania-1386 was doing very well on the Lubec KiwiSDR at
around 2300utc and was producing a hefty carrier here in DC. 1215 was
atypically more than just a carrier between 1210 and 1220 as well.

Seeing lots of carriers since I’ve started playing with the HF+ - nearly all of
them are actual stations too unlike some other ‘cheap’ SDRs.

I get a kick out of those anmts. The guy who recorded them LONG ago is no
longer with us - Frank Oliver. The U. S. Information Service is long gone as
are 'cultural centers.' And the zip on the address given - 20547 - hasn't been
used in decades.

Oh well, it's not like anybody's actually listening ... except us DXers. ;-)

Happy New Year to everyone!

Good friend Andy Robins has gone through some of my Perseus files from
DXpeditions to Quoddy House, near Lubec, Maine [Nov. 2017], the former Grayland

Here’s what he found:

[IRCA] South Africa on 702kHz heard in Maine

2017-11-27 Thread Bill Whitacre
Sometimes it takes awhile to find ‘the sweet spot’ in a weeks worth of wav
files.

2100utc on Nov. 13 is such a spot apparently.

I don’t know what the sun was doing while I was at Quoddy House near Lubec,
Maine but I’ve got a recording of at least three IDs for LM Radio on 702kHz in
this cut:

http://realmonitor.com/qh10/171113/qh100/2100/south_africa-702.wav

You’ll need your headphones.

First a female announcer at :13 says ‘LM Radio’ then a guy says ‘Set your time
to LM time’ with a ding-dong doorbell sound at :23 and then goes into a
announcement of frequencies, including 702 AM, and near the end of the cut
there’s another clear mention of LM Radio by a male announcer at :46.

I’ve just begun digging thru this wav file and have unIDs on 639, 648 and 972
for that matter!

[IRCA] DXpedition to Quoddy House - Lubec, Maine - Nov. 12-18, 2017

2017-11-22 Thread Bill Whitacre
>From November 12 - 18 I was on a DXpedition in Lubec, Maine sharing time
>between
Quoddy House [QH] and Lubec Bay Cottage [LBC].

I had 2 DKAZ antennas at QH - one pointing 45 deg. and the other at 100 deg. At
LBC I had one DKAZ at 90 deg. All antennas were 160' DKAZ with Vactrol
termination resistance [Rt].

I'll be going through Perseus wav files for awhile but have a webpage up and a
decent start:

http://realmonitor.com/am_logs_qh10.php

Highlights so far are South Africa on 846 kHz, ID'd by Ralph Brandi and a
parallel webstream, and CRI on 1521 kHz from Xinjiang provice, China.

Another highlight was getting a KiwiSDR receiver going at QH. To make sure it
was working without totally overloading a slow internet connection a few lucky
souls tested it while I was still at QH and dug out some amazing DX - like South
Africa [thanks again Ralph Brandi!]. The KiwiSDR will be up, all going well,
over the winter from QH on a 1000ft. BOG at ~75 deg.

During the few days I had the DKAZ connected to the KiwiSDR and since on the BOG
Andy Robins took the set up for a spin DXing NDBs - non-directional beacons - on
LW. His excellent write-up of the experience is here:

http://realmonitor.com/qh10/Quoddy%20House%20NDB%20Logs%202017.pdf

You can give the KiwiSDR at QH a try here:

http://qhkiwisdr.proxy.kiwisdr.com:8073/

Be gentle and patient. It's on a slow RF-link wifi connection assisted by a
beta proxy server hosted by the KiwiSDR folks.

The 1000ft. BOG is not as good as the 160' DKAZ at 45 deg. but there is no way a
DKAZ - as I errect them for DXpedition use - would survive a cold, wet, windy
winter on the Maine coast. Based on my experience at QH in 10 trips over the
past several years, any antenna not already on the ground would eventually end
up there anyway.

Re: [IRCA] Congratulations to DXpedition Partner Tom R.

2017-11-22 Thread Bill Whitacre
Thanks for this news Gary and congrats to Tom! Someone has finally found the
secret to wide-band recorded DX at Rockworks. Maybe more of us will come now?!

Not to take anything away from this awesome achievement, but in fairness to
Grayland - when there was one - I show 64 NZ stations heard from there during
my July 2014 DXpedition:

http://realmonitor.com/am_logs_grayland10.php

… but who’s counting?

Seems to me even tying a record held by Grayland is quite an achievement.

Nice catch Mark!

Made me go back and listen to my May 29, 2017 files from Quoddy House when
there was an opening to southern Africa. 576 has something on it but it’s
covered by either QRN or a spur from some domestic station.

You’re getting us all rev’d up for fall DXpeditions!

Re: [IRCA] Old school logging

2017-10-09 Thread Bill Whitacre
This is an interesting discussion.

Seems to me that logging is another part of the hobby where there is no one
‘right’ or ‘best’ way to do it. We’re all doing this because it’s either fun
or we don’t have anything else to do. Either way you need to find a way to
keep track of what you hear that’s ‘fun’ and adds to your enjoyment of the
hobby or you won’t keep doing it.

An Excel spreadsheet is a very powerful tool — you can do LOTS of things with a
spreadsheet.

BUT there are some things that you really aught to be using a database for.
One is making your logs available on-line. If that’s not important to you then
you can stop reading.

For me it’s a satisfying part of the hobby - not only are my ‘logs’ just sound
samples of what I’ve heard but I also get a kick out of figuring out how to
coax MySQL, PHP and HTML to show what I want to show in the way I want to show
it.

An example: http://realmonitor.com/am_logs_qh9.php

That’s not for everyone, I understand.

—

It is also true that HOW you DX dictates HOW you LOG. I use a Perseus and very
often use Mestor to record TOH and other pieces of an hour. So I’ve ALWAYS got
some recorded audio to work from. I call it TiVO DXing.

I have found over 35 years of working with ‘program people’ at VOA that there
is NO amount of text or verbiage that can adequately describe or validate a
reception when compared to actually hearing it. There MAY be some notes
required to put the recorded audio in context but that’s just another ‘column’
in a spreadsheet or table element in a database.

Besides, with a recording you’ve got permanent record and can let others help
in IDing something you can’t.

—

Seems to me that if there were one place [website] that could handle anyone's
loggings and sounds in various formats then that might be a useful option.

I used to ‘host’ our city’s Little League teams website. Over the nearly 10
years that I did the job I devised ways to show schedules, pictures, results
via form input from the coaches and even a testing module for prospective
umpires. When I stopped doing it I thought the organization would struggle to
replace me. They quickly found a site on-line that did all that I did and more
for TONS of sports teams all over the country and became just another one of
their customers.

People don’t do things like that for free though — they do it to make $$ — even
though what they charge any single customer might not seem like much.

I have not looked at things like mwlist.org <http://mwlist.org/> as a place for
putting my loggings but from what Tim Tromp has described it might be a place
to consider.

There may be others and I’ll bet hams have developed some solutions to this
that might be adaptable to DXers use as well.

Just my 2 cents.

Difference in perspective Colin. I consider ‘steady state’ hearing nothing new
and marvel at how something different can occasionally be heard even after
you’ve listened to a given frequency at the same time thousands of times before.

Isn’t that the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing again and again

[IRCA] Carrier and audio on 774 in DC this morning - Sep 1

2017-09-01 Thread Bill Whitacre
Following Tim Tromp’s loggings from western Michigan I’ve been watching for DU
carriers here in Alexandria, VA in the off-chance that something might show up.

To date this season not much more than imaginary whisps of waterfall traces
have.

But today, Sept. 1, when locals back off on their early s/on times I got a nice
carrier on 774 and some weak audio - the kind of audio where I can tell you
that there was either a male or female announcer but not the language and when
there was music but not the title or even the genre.

Still it’s a start. The kind of thing that keeps you coming back to the dials
each morning with some hope!

All this happened around sunrise - 1030utc [6:30am EDT] - in an extended widow
of opportunity with local WAVA-780 signing on later than they were in August.
By 1040utc or so it was all gone.

Oddly there were NO other carriers visible and I suspect the sun burping had
something to do with this.

Here’s what 657 Star sounds like in Grayland:

Sometimes better but you get the idea.

Sorry, it’s the only way I can ‘compete.’ ;-))

Very close but just like Tahiti on 738 - not quite. Came close last year when
you and Tim were having fun but either I had a carrier on 1098 that would’ve
produced audio had there been any or couldn’t quite pull it out of 1548 or 774
or 702.

Now, I’m afraid, the QRN is even worse and it’s pretty unlikely to get much
beyond carriers.

I got TPs back in 2009 here in DC but doubt that’d be possible now with QRN.

Sad. Must travel for DX.

Re: [IRCA] Southern Star New Zealand I-BLOCKED in Michigan

2017-08-27 Thread Bill Whitacre
Good stuff Tim! Based on your report from yesterday I was lured into
resurrecting the E-W elements of my Wellbrook delta phased array yesterday. No
joy. Not only were there only threshold traces last night on usually decent
TAs but this morning I was barely able to claim carriers on 612, 1098 and 774
at various times between 1000 - 1030+utc sunrise here in DC.

Pretty disappointing after a visit to Grayland a couple of weeks ago. ;-)

So I got on sdr.hu and found a decent signal from 1098 on a receiver in Hawaii.
Reasonable modulation for once with a program of island-ish music and male
announcer in local language.

Looking forward to another DXpedition to someplace with room for antennas and a
helluva lot less noise than here @ home.

[IRCA] Grayland, WA DXpedition - Aug. 8 - 13, 2017

2017-08-21 Thread Bill Whitacre
I was fortunate to visit again Grayland, WA and Florence, OR during the week of
August 8 - 13, 2017 and erected a 160’ DKAZ antenna at both sites facing around
250 degrees.

Results were pretty mediocre with the highlight being getting a KiwiSDR to
‘play’ through the router at Casa Sea Esta [near the old Grayland Motel] so
several other folks could have a listen. Thanks to Ralph Brandi for helping to
get this going.

I’ll be adding more things but ‘loggings’ are available for listening here:

http://realmonitor.com/am_logs_grayland16.php

For those who haven’t seen my logs before, I don’t do traditional text loggings
instead saving small sound samples as I go thru Perseus WAV files making them
available on a webpage in a frequency vs. date/time table.

They say a sound is worth 1000 words [or is that a picture?] Either way, I
know I’d prefer to HEAR what someone else heard than have them describe it to
me.

Enjoy.

[IRCA] Downeast Maine over Memorial Day

2017-06-02 Thread Bill Whitacre
My wife and I visited Lubec, in ‘downeast’ Maine, over the Memorial Day holiday
for a combination birding and radio expedition. Birding was good but DX was
better! Just starting thru the wav files and have ‘the page’ up for my
unorthodox way of logging:

http://realmonitor.com/am_logs_qh9.php

Seems we hit an ‘opening’ on May 29 after the sun burped and produced some
amazing conditions towards Brazil and southern Africa.

Check out 657, 756 and 828 — 2 x South Africa and 1 x Malawi! I always assume
EVERYthing has been heard before in Newfoundland but I’m not sure any of these
have been heard in the U.S.

Usual 160’ DKAZ was facing 100 deg. - a little south from where I put it in
November when Europe/ME are more of a target.

Things went well with the remote Rt antenna until the final morning when
‘somebody’ chewed thru my CAT5 control line out by the back-end of the antenna.
My prime suspect is the owner’s ‘pet’ porcupine who I had surprised more than
once when driving in or coming outside the house. I can’t imagine that CAT5
tastes good so this guy must hold a grudge. ;-)

Looking forward to moving thru more wav files but I suspect the DX gods have
given about all they’re going to on this round.

So that’s who it is causing a huge problem to 882! On every wav file where
there’s anything on 882 from Feb. Grayland I’ve got that het from above. It’s
almost always weaker than 882 but it’s kind of hard to avoid by going to the

I’ll go back and see if I can pull some audio.

Korea/China were coming in pretty well during a late February visit to Grayland

[IRCA] Grayland 15 - Feb. 19-25, 2017

2017-03-15 Thread Bill Whitacre
Nick Hall-Patch and I DX’d from the Grayland Motel for all or part of February
19-25 UTC. I have gone through ‘the best’ of my collected wav files and the
‘loggings’ from them appear on this webpage:

http://realmonitor.com/am_logs_grayland15.php

Highlights were a decent opening to Asia and Alaska on the 25th and Majuro on
1098 staying on ‘all night’ on the 21st with lively ‘island music.’

As the saying goes “even a bad day at Grayland is better than being any place
else.”

[IRCA] New Mediumwave Propagation Project

2017-01-14 Thread Bill Whitacre
If you're interested in radio propagation and how geomagnetic indices effect
what you hear on mediumwave, there's a project you should know about.

Graphs of the last 60 days of the daily average of the 2MeV electron flux,
A-index, K-index, Dst and solar wind plus a numerical index of Nick Hall-Patch's
daily Victoria, BC TP and DU reception quality can be found here:

http://tivodxer.com/jpgraph_example_multigraph1.php

Not only are pertinent geomagnetic indices shown on the same page for the same
period for your comparison, but we've added actual reception data to the graph.
Our hope is that this will allow us to find some new correlations between
reception and what the sun is doing, as well as validate or refute some existing
theories.

Involved in this project are Nick Hall-Patch as chief scientific consultant and
contributor of the reception index, Mauno Ritola as sanity check and contribitor
of the 2MeV electron flux, and Bill Whitacre as curator and 'scraper' of data.

In the works is a way to let you select a date range and get back results.
We're also interested in your observations that confirm or refute 'common
widsom' about propagation.

SER has local IDs at all sorts of times and what I’ve found most useful is to
find a time [wav file] that has one and then start looking for others - if
one’s doing it, they all are. It’s usually just before TOH or TOHH [top of
half hour].

RNE has some local/regional IDs at a 0625utc break. I, for once, took
advantage of this knowledge and programmed in some 8 min. Mestor events at
0623utc and got several ‘new’ stations! It’s boring just recording the usual
TOH RNE stuff and writing ‘Spain’ in the log. Having a specific ID is NEAT!

Couple of examples:

http://realmonitor.com/qh8/161115/lbc/0625/e-531g.wav

Great way to learn your Spanish geography!

I also found this webpage helpful if you can’t figure out from MWList.org
where a given region is on a given frequency:

There is NO Farda on 1305! Though there is Persian on Iran fighting [and
usually loosing] to RNE.

It’s not the Mac part, it’s the Win 10 part. I gather, from this list, that
Win 10 is not ‘friendly’ to Perseus software … or many other things.

2016-12-01 Thread Bill Whitacre
Hey Saul. I’ve been using MacBooks of various vintages with Bootcamp and Win7
to run Perseus software for years. Works well. I went this route because
using Parellels, when I tried it many years ago, just couldn’t ‘emulate’ the
USB port fast enough to ‘keep up’ with the Perseus. There’s a good help
section on-line and the Bootcamp software is good about talking you through
installation.

Once thing you should keep in mind is that ‘newer’ MacBooks and MacOS will
force you into using Win 10 — bad idea! I’m not sure what Mac OS is the last
one to run Win 7 but there MAY be ways to work around it if you have a newer
OS. Google is your friend.

[IRCA] QH8 DXpedition near Lubec, Maine

2016-11-26 Thread Bill Whitacre
From November 13 - 19, 2016 I was in two locations near Lubec, Maine - just
across the US/Canada border from Campobello Island, NB.

At Lubec Bay House [LBC] I had a 160’ DKAZ pointing 100 degrees and at Quoddy
House [QH] I had another 160’ DKAZ at 57 degrees.

Many wav files yet to review but loggings so far can be seen on this webpage:
http://realmonitor.com/am_logs_qh8.php

Conditions were good and highlights include South Africa and Nigeria both on
828kHz, Eritrea on 845kHz, lots of stations from Iran and several Brazilians.

Thanks to everyone who have helped me ID some of these stations, particularly
Mauno Ritola and Vlad Titarev, as well as the guys from the PEI DXpedition who
‘forged the way’ for what could be heard from the great northeast.

[IRCA] DXpedition near Lubec, Maine

2016-11-15 Thread Bill Whitacre
Sitting in the library for wifi here in Lubec, Maine waiting for the highest
tide ever thanks to the ‘super moon.’ I’m at two sites with one 160’ DKAZ at
57 deg. and another a short distance away at 100 deg. Both are ‘traditional’
23’ mast versions with Vactrol Rt.

No internet at either location so paralleling with on-line streaming is out.
Will make a positive ID on things like South Africa on 828 a bit of a
challenge. That’ll have to wait ’til I get a chance to listen to wav files and
pull some song titles hoping that they may actually be logged by the station …
bit of a long-shot I fear.

What I’ve noted so far is that despite the unsettled conditions things are
coming in pretty well … and fading in pretty early compared with ‘back home’ in
DC. ‘Early’ means hearing audio from 1900utc onwards from the likes of the UK
on 1215 and 909 as well as Albania on 1395 [or thereabouts] and a few Spanish
outlets. By 1930 some more interesting stuff starts to come in and by 2000utc
we’re in full-on DXp mode.

Past couple of morning I’ve watched TP carriers on 774, 972, 1593 fading up
after 1000utc and lasting as late as 1100utc in the case of 1593.

More as I get a chance to go thru wav files.

Great stuff Mark!

I have never found words very useful when trying to describe to someone what
I’ve heard on the radio.

Since my return to the hobby in late 2008, after a 25+ year absence, I have
skipped written logs completely and use a database/webpage system to present
what I’ve heard - either @ home or on DXpeditions:

http://realmonitor.com/am_logs.php <http://realmonitor.com/am_logs.php>

http://realmonitor.com/am_logs_qh6.php <http://realmonitor.com/am_logs_qh6.php>

http://realmonitor.com/am_logs_grayland10.php
<http://realmonitor.com/am_logs_grayland10.php>

… are a few examples.

It’s not perfect but now that I have a ‘template’ it’s pretty easy to make a
new page or add to an existing one.

It does require a little knowledge or PHP, MySQL and HTML but since ‘playing
with the computer’ is part of the hobby for many of us that’s not a problem.

I hope more people go this route. For me, it’s a lot more ‘real’ than pages
upon pages of written logs. And once it’s in a database you can do all sorts of
analysis that I’m sure would attract the attention of the ‘counters’ among us.

Re: [IRCA] WATERPROOF BOXES (was: DKAZ questions)

2016-10-30 Thread Bill Whitacre
I use Guy’s eBay gray plastic boxes for the indoor portion of the Vactrol and
some black RadioShack mini-boxes for outside — WITH bleed holes. I can attest
to the fact that condensation DOES happen — whether at Grayland or Lubec or
Fleeton, VA on the Chesapeake Bay.

Fortunately, inside the outdoor portion of the Vactrol you’ve only got a
Vactrol itself and perhaps a couple of resistors, depending on whose circuit
you’re using. Not much bad can happen unless the condensation mixes with a
little salt water and shorts something out — could happen.

After just one trip to Grayland a new outdoor device needs a good fresh water
rinse after several days of salty mist or just blowing breeze. Not quite sure
how my ‘old’ FLG100s still work but they do! Proves that ‘potting’ something
is far more useful than just to keep prying eyes away. ;-)

Yes, that’s the first rule — NEVER let some geomag prediction keep you from the
dials! Nobody here will bet you a new car [or even an old one] that X will
happen if the geomag conditions are Y.

About the same time all sorts of particles were apparently hitting the
ionosphere and driving up the A-index I was having the best TA conditions in a
long time in the mid-Atlantic.

That’s not what one normally expects.

Go figure …

[IRCA] Some TAs in the Mid-Atlantic

2016-10-25 Thread Bill Whitacre
Been awhile since I've had any reasonable TA reception here in my mid-Atlantic
evening ... but last night started with nice signal from what I assume was
Saudi on 594 then what I assume was Egypt on 819, 864 and 774 sneaking by WABC;
later the UK on 693, 909, 1089 and 1215; Spain on 855, 1044, 1413 and a few
other channels.

Fun listening to audio vs. watching traces roll up the Perseus screen. ;-)

BTW, 1521 is no longer the 'monster' it has been in seasons past. In fact,
it's not in here at all! Must be having tx problems.

Re: [IRCA] Autumn 2016 DXpeditions?

2016-10-23 Thread Bill Whitacre
Hi Mark and thanks for putting together a list of prospective DXpeditions.

After joining the crowd at LBI in a couple of weeks, I’ll be making the trek to
Quoddy House in a month or so - Nov. 13-20 - then back to Fleeton, VA, on the
Chesapeake Bay, for a few days in early December and then Grayland in February,
2017.

Hoping for quiet geomag conditions and mild weather!

At all locations I’ll be using what has become my ‘stock’ 160’ DKAZ with
Vactrol termination. Just completed two more Vactol units yesterday and may
summon the energy to try an in-line array of closely-spaced DKAZ for some added
directivity … or take another shot at a broadside array of DKAZ.

Re: [IRCA] 720 TP

2016-10-09 Thread Bill Whitacre
I have only heard AUS on 720 - and then only ONCE and only at Sans Souci, on
the Oregon coast between Florence and Yachats, OR.

Chuck did ‘glean’ many of my Grayland logs for a re-issued ‘master log.’ I’ll
let him address where that might be.

My own master log from Grayland & Sans Souci, covering 14 trips to Grayland and
5 to Sans Souci since 2010 is here:

[IRCA] DU carriers in DC - Oct. 7

2016-10-07 Thread Bill Whitacre
Carriers today on 612, 702, 738, 774, 1116, 1512 and 1548. Only 1512 and 1548
came close to audio - both just at sunrise @ 7:10 AM EDT [1110 utc].

Fade pattern on 1512 and 1548 of ~ 2 second peaks and ~ 2 second valleys. Both
‘teased’ the SAM on peaks which took a bit of time to settle and then got lost
in the domestic splatter and fading desired signal.

Few mumbly words heard on both 1512 and 1548 between 1106 - 1115utc with 1548
holding out the longest.

Perseverance will pay off someday!

[IRCA] DU carriers in DC - Oct. 6

2016-10-06 Thread Bill Whitacre
Several presumed DU carriers/traces this morning near Washington, DC
[Alexandria, VA] - 612, 702, 738, 1512 and 1548 which almost became strong
enough for audio several minutes prior to sunrise at 1106utc [7:06am EDT].

But for QRN and LOUD domestics 1548 might’ve ‘made it’ this morning. Alas,
it’ll take one heckuva opening to get audio here.

Re: [IRCA] Early TP report Oct 2 - Victoria BC - relabeled 'No DU Audio in DC on Oct. 2'

2016-10-02 Thread Bill Whitacre
Not surprisingly no audio here this AM. Carriers approaching audio at sunrise
- 1102utc - on 702, 612 and 774 though.

Still working on an intermittent fuse-blowing on my Wellbrook phaser.
Narrowing it down to one of four legs now.

Also having some fun and frustration with a new SDRPlay rx and SDRUno software.
Using every other software I’ve tried makes me REALLY glad I started back in
the hobby with Perseus. What is intuitive on Perseus stock software is mostly
buried behind odd windows and menu picks and key combinations on the others.

[IRCA] Carrier and a little audio from DU near DC

2016-10-01 Thread Bill Whitacre
Got my 4-element Wellbrook delta phased array back up and working yesterday.
Recorded some HSFB last night pointing west and got up this morning hoping to
at least see some DU carriers [‘traces’ on the Perseus screen].

Pointing the array west, I started at about 1000utc [6am EDT] and wasn’t seeing
much. Sunrise today is 7:02am EDT [1102utc].

Then nearing 1030 utc I started to see a trace on 702 fighting WWL - could
actually ‘hear’ a weak 2kHz het, something very weak on 738, nothing on 612 and
something weak on 1098.

In searching around for possibilities I came to 774 where there was a pretty
decent carrier/trace sandwiched between WMAQ and WABC. It peaked with some
audio around 1030 and near the end of that peak I finally thought to hit
‘record’ and got this:

http://realmonitor.com/774-1031-2016Oct1.wav

About all one can tell with careful listening is there’s a male voice in there.
It would take a lot of imagination to say much more I’m afraid. Presuming
it’s Melbourne which is one of the strongest OZ stations in the Northwest.

Actually, this is the first time I’ve gotten ANY audio on DU here in DC. Few
years back I tried almost daily to see/hear something on 738 - carrier most
nights, never any real audio - and the past few years, around Labor Day, I’ve
‘seen’ some carriers on the hi-band - 1548, 1566 and 1611 - but never any audio.

Given what Kaz and Tim Tromp are hearing in the midwest this must be an
exceptional year!

2016-09-16 Thread Bill Whitacre
Thanks for putting this up Colin. Unfortunately, Youtube just spins and spins
when I try to open it. Must be a LOT of folks trying to hear what they missed.

It’s not easy being a ‘frequent Grayland visitor’ living on the east coast.

I would suspect that ‘opening’ allowed some carriers, at least, to come pretty
far east. Alas, my 4-element Wellbrook array is down at the moment.

Re: [IRCA] 1098

2016-09-13 Thread Bill Whitacre
They seem to leave the carrier on all night Walt. I'd bet for navigation
purposes. Unless they've done something drastic they ALWAYS have weak
modulation so it's hard to know when they actually take audio off but it's well
before 1200utc.

1098 was the first TP/DU carrier Nick found on Sunday AM in KC. Kind of fun
watching him race around using his little teeny laptop and some non-Perseus
software I was totally unfamiliar with. Made me like stock Perseus s/ware even
more. ;-)

Still curious to know if he round any audio on 1548 when he got home. Was a
bit past sunrise by the TOH at 1200utc but it wasn't doing bad on fade-ups.

We had fun.
