[IRCA] HAR/TIS in Orange County CA
Went through the HAR/TIS list that Phil recently published and found out there are only 7 HAR/TIS stations in Orange County. Over the years several have gone away and a few new ones came on the air. So here is an update of what I can here. Orange County is a small county between Los Angeles County and San Diego County. The north has older communities while the south is newer. 1620 WPMW407 San Juan Capistrano CA has been on the air for a long time. I think it was originally to inform motorists of construction on Highway 74, the Ortega Highway and run by CALTRANS. This is a two lane mountain road, part in Orange County and part in Riverside County. The Orange County side upgraded the highway to widen it slightly and then add better guardrails. The project was completed and then the overpass and on/off ramps at the 5 Freeway were completely redone. So the station had purpose. Now I don't know. It's currently running a quick test message without call letters. The recent Holy Fire closed Ortega Highway for a week but the message didn't change. 1620 WNZF285 Fullerton CA isn't heard here. I've heard it when I'm closer but not recently. This is run by Cal State Fullerton. 1640 WPKA209 Irvine CA is strong here, run by the City of Irvine. Long message, about 7 minutes long with ID in each message. You can listen to this on the city website at cityofirvine.org/AM1640. This station had an actual QSL card when I wrote to them years ago. 1680 WQUX625 Irvine CA run by the toll roads for the 73 Toll road. Toll Roads Radio gives a call ID in each message and is weak here. 1690 WQUX684 Anaheim CA is also run by the toll roads. I think it's for the 241 Toll road. I can't hear it here but heard it when it first came on the air. 1690 WQTB222 Irvine CA is run by UCI, University of California Irvine. Long message, about 5 minutes with ID in each one. Fair signal here. 1690 WQIZ328 La Habra CA run by the Firesafe Council. I have never heard this one and it's in the north of the county. The next time I'm in the north end of the county I'll try for the 3 stations I can't hear from home. Interesting. When I DXed from Michigan in the 70's and early 80's I only heard 2 Vermont stations. WVMT-620, not enough for a report, and WCFR-1480 on their frequency check. I have a prepared card from WCFR. New England was always tough. I only heard New Hampshire and Rhode Island once each. Paul, I record as much as I can but as mentioned before I listen on a Sony Walkman sometimes and can't record. I still need to order that external speaker/recorder. One of my best recent veries is KRJW-1240 Altamont OR. Heard on the Walkman and no recording. I'm glad they verified the 3 minutes of ads that I copied down. I also keep a hard copy. Several years ago I got a comb binder and I use that a lot. I even make a version that's on 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 paper. That one is easier to handle. The Excel file is on a thumb drive but I keep a back-up file on my laptop. I should just email it to myself and then the copy is on the ISP server. Martin > On October 8, 2017 at 9:53 PM "Paul B. Mark, I write details in a Composition book for what I hear daily. My log is a Microsoft Excel file that I have developed over time. It has several tabs. The main log tab has all the usual columns for frequency, calls, city, state, format, etc. Another tab is statistics that automatically counts how many stations heard in each state and province. Other tabs are to track my reception reports and veries. [IRCA] Misc MW info and Football
My wife and I were in Sequoia a week and a half ago and I was able to listen to some AM stations including this possible slogan change. 1370 KGEN Tulare CA using La Ley slogan and announcing 94.5 FM. And a local format change. 900 KALI West Covina CA heard last night in Chinese with ToH ID for Radio Chinese 1300/1600. Wonder if this is a filler before a format change or an actual change. Local football. 100.3 KSWD The Sound is the Los Angeles Rams station. 640 KFI is the Los Angeles Chargers station. [IRCA] Bell & Howell 5 MHz oscilloscope for sale
I bought this at a garage sale over 20 years ago and haven't used it. It doesn't work but it does have a large lit "dot" that comes on but doesn't sweep. It comes with all the manuals that I have with it including the assembly manual. I suspect that the person who built it made a mistake. I remember going through the assembly steps and I noticed a transistor installed incorrectly. It might just be an easy fix but will take some time to find the problem. $10 plus shipping, almost giving it away. [IRCA] KFSD-1450/KSPA-1510
Just wanted to post this after a little monitoring in the car today. I know most of this has been posted, I think by Mike Sanburn. KFSD-1450 uses slogan "The cow, cow AM 14-50". KSPA-1510 uses slogan "AM 15-10 the kicker". What I did notice is that both play the same country songs. KSPA is a delayed a couple minutes. If I have time I'll listen to both with a clock and get a better measurement of the delay. Re: [IRCA] Radio shack to file for bankruptcy
I stopped by one of our local RS stores last week to see about replacing a screen on an iPhone6. They said give them a month or two. So they are (or were) keeping up with repairs on the new phones. Not many customers and I didn't really spend much time in there. RS obviously needs a new business model. Cell phone plans is too competitive but there is a need for cell phone repair. Lots of little shops around but RS could draw in more customers with their name and if they were able to do repairs while the customer waited. They should have jumped into all the game machines for TV and the games. Actually anything that you can attach to your TV. Here in Orange County we have a couple electronics stores for components but we've lost a couple over the years. Fry's has some components and then we have MARVAC. Re: [IRCA] Modem Noise & KIDD
I didn't receive a response to my email to the PD at KIDD. Not surprised, he's probably busy trying to find a new job. At least I have a couple recordings. Patrick, congrats on solving the noise problem. Yes, I think it's called a Faraday cage. When I worked at Conexant they tested RF ICs in Mexicali and I heard they had to test them in a room that had the walls, floor and ceiling grounded. Too bad the Modem designers saved a few pennies in the power supply filter design. Re: [IRCA] KIDD-630
It's too bad when a station ignores their listeners. This one might go away and their legacy for DXers will not be good. There will be little paperwork (veries) for people to remember them by. As long as KFI is running IBOC it will be impossible for me to hear anything on 630. Maybe I'll receive a response to my email. I'm working on 150 California station veries and I need every one I can get. [IRCA] KIDD-630
I read in the latest IRCA newsletter that KIDD will go silent at the end of the year. They used to make it here before KFI turned on IBOC at night. Back in 2009 I sent them a reception report without a response (follow ups too) so I gave it a try again today with an email to the PD and Traffic Dir Kevin Kahl. He was there back in 2009. Re: [IRCA] QSL Card
This (QIP) is a great resource that I use regularly. It hasn't been updated in since the summer of 2011 so you should look through past IRCA verie signers columns too. QSL collecting seems to be a dying part of the hobby and I'm glad to see someone is interested in it. I spend about half of my DXing time chasing shortwave utility stations and a larger number of those stations have gone to sending a verification via email. Some are letters and some are cards. I like them because several I've received have photos of the stations and antennas. I wish more MW stations would take the time to put together a nice email verie but I think the low number of reception reports doesn't warrant the effort. Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Fw: KKIM
I don't like using the word "cheater" because that indicates intent and that isn't known. I know I've heard a few new stations recently and they were definitely running day power at night. But the reason for that might be equipment failure vs. intentional. DXers should think twice about policing the bands. We should have good relations with the stations and if there is a problem the most we should do is contact the station about it. I'm one of the few of us who collect verifications and I would hope that the stations still view our hobby as something benign and not something that negatively affects their business. I found one of these AM-FM portables at the Goodwill. I didn't need it but couldn't just leave it there. Only problem is the back battery/line cord cover is missing. I plugged it in and it plays. [IRCA] New TIS on the air
Another new local TIS is on the air. 1680 WQUR867 Irvine CA, "The Toll Roads Radio AM 16-80" with short loop on how to pay for the toll road by a man with ID in each announcement. Just looked on the FCC website and license just granted 9/23/14 and expires 3/22/15 (6 months). Now I have 3 HAR/TIS stations in Irvine! They're taking over the spectrum. Re: [IRCA] My AM & SW targets
Paul, I lived in Michigan until 1984 and I heard ZBVI once, probably late 70's. I think I still have a recording of them. Wrote many times and never received a verie. :( You will need strong auroral conditions and a loop or antenna that's directional south. Be patient but time is running out this season. I also heard and QSL'd Solomon Islands but on 5020 kHz. You will need to find out when others are hearing it and consistently listen for them during that time. I suspect closer to 1 AM EDT would be your best bet. Good luck.
