the card is actually printed on one of the business cards that you can make

[IRCA] HAR/TIS in Orange County CA

2018-08-25 Thread Martin Foltz
Went through the HAR/TIS list that Phil recently published and found out there
are only 7 HAR/TIS stations in Orange County. Over the years several have gone
away and a few new ones came on the air. So here is an update of what I can
here.

Orange County is a small county between Los Angeles County and San Diego
County. The north has older communities while the south is newer.

1620 WPMW407 San Juan Capistrano CA has been on the air for a long time. I
think it was originally to inform motorists of construction on Highway 74, the
Ortega Highway and run by CALTRANS. This is a two lane mountain road, part in
Orange County and part in Riverside County. The Orange County side upgraded the
highway to widen it slightly and then add better guardrails. The project was
completed and then the overpass and on/off ramps at the 5 Freeway were
completely redone. So the station had purpose. Now I don't know. It's currently
running a quick test message without call letters. The recent Holy Fire closed
Ortega Highway for a week but the message didn't change.

1620 WNZF285 Fullerton CA isn't heard here. I've heard it when I'm closer but
not recently. This is run by Cal State Fullerton.

1640 WPKA209 Irvine CA is strong here, run by the City of Irvine. Long message,
about 7 minutes long with ID in each message. You can listen to this on the
city website at cityofirvine.org/AM1640. This station had an actual QSL card
when I wrote to them years ago.

1680 WQUX625 Irvine CA run by the toll roads for the 73 Toll road. Toll Roads
Radio gives a call ID in each message and is weak here.

1690 WQUX684 Anaheim CA is also run by the toll roads. I think it's for the 241
Toll road. I can't hear it here but heard it when it first came on the air.

1690 WQTB222 Irvine CA is run by UCI, University of California Irvine. Long
message, about 5 minutes with ID in each one. Fair signal here.

1690 WQIZ328 La Habra CA run by the Firesafe Council. I have never heard this
one and it's in the north of the county.

The next time I'm in the north end of the county I'll try for the 3 stations I
can't hear from home.

Interesting. When I DXed from Michigan in the 70's and early 80's I only heard
2 Vermont stations. WVMT-620, not enough for a report, and WCFR-1480 on their
frequency check. I have a prepared card from WCFR. New England was always
tough. I only heard New Hampshire and Rhode Island once each. When I visit
Michigan next year I'm going to see if I can hear Maine, the only eastern state
I didn't hear back then. Would love to hear a new state.

Re: [IRCA] Old school logging

2017-10-08 Thread Martin Foltz
Paul, I record as much as I can but as mentioned before I listen on a Sony
Walkman sometimes and can't record. I still need to order that external
speaker/recorder.

One of my best recent veries is KRJW-1240 Altamont OR. Heard on the Walkman and
no recording. I'm glad they verified the 3 minutes of ads that I copied down.

I also keep a hard copy. Several years ago I got a comb binder and I use that a
lot. I even make a version that's on 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 paper. That one is easier to
handle. The Excel file is on a thumb drive but I keep a back-up file on my
laptop. I should just email it to myself and then the copy is on the ISP server.

Re: [IRCA] Old school logging

2017-10-08 Thread Martin Foltz
Mark,

I write details in a Composition book for what I hear daily.
My log is a Microsoft Excel file that I have developed over time. It has
several tabs. The main log tab has all the usual columns for frequency, calls,
city, state, format, etc. Another tab is statistics that automatically counts
how many stations heard in each state and province. Other tabs are to track my
reception reports and veries.

[IRCA] Misc MW info and Football

My wife and I were in Sequoia a week and a half ago and I was able to listen to
some AM stations including this possible slogan change.

1370 KGEN Tulare CA using La Ley slogan and announcing 94.5 FM.

And a local format change.

900 KALI West Covina CA heard last night in Chinese with ToH ID for Radio
Chinese 1300/1600. Wonder if this is a filler before a format change or an
actual change.

Local football.

100.3 KSWD The Sound is the Los Angeles Rams station.

640 KFI is the Los Angeles Chargers station.

[IRCA] Bell Howell 5 MHz oscilloscope for sale

2015-03-14 Thread Martin Foltz
I bought this at a garage sale over 20 years ago and haven't used it. It
doesn't work but it does have a large lit dot that comes on but doesn't
sweep. It comes with all the manuals that I have with it including the
assembly manual. I suspect that the person who built it made a mistake. I
remember going through the assembly steps and I noticed a transistor
installed incorrectly. It might just be an easy fix but will take some time
to find the problem. $10 plus shipping, almost giving it away.

2015-02-21 Thread Martin Foltz
Just wanted to post this after a little monitoring in the car today. I know
most of this has been posted, I think by Mike Sanburn.

KFSD-1450 uses slogan The cow, cow AM 14-50.
KSPA-1510 uses slogan AM 15-10 the kicker.

What I did notice is that both play the same country songs. KSPA is a
delayed a couple minutes. If I have time I'll listen to both with a clock
and get a better measurement of the delay.

Re: [IRCA] Radio shack to file for bankruptcy

2015-01-15 Thread Martin Foltz
I stopped by one of our local RS stores last week to see about replacing a
screen on an iPhone6. They said give them a month or two. So they are (or
were) keeping up with repairs on the new phones. Not many customers and I
didn't really spend much time in there. RS obviously needs a new business
model. Cell phone plans is too competitive but there is a need for cell
phone repair. Lots of little shops around but RS could draw in more
customers with their name and if they were able to do repairs while the
customer waited. They should have jumped into all the game machines for TV
and the games. Actually anything that you can attach to your TV.

Here in Orange County we have a couple electronics stores for components but
we've lost a couple over the years. Fry's has some components and then we
have MARVAC. There is also a Ham Radio Outlet in the area.

I doubt that their old paradigm is workable today. Just as the number
of radio hobbyists - hams, DX'ers, SWL's - is shrinking, so is the pool
of electronics DIY'ers. A lot of the DIY market implosion results from
advanced circuitry moving beyond more and more people who lack the type
 of technical knowledge to continue.

I'd more expect the inventory to be liquidated, period.

SOME of these things -- the freq checks, the SPs, the splits -are gone.
But the DX tests, while not as frequent these days as in years gone by,
are still out there, thanks to the efforts of Brandon Jordan, Paul
Walker, and others. The sign-ons and sign-offs are still out there, if
you know where to find them (nowadays, I would bypass anything north of
1240 and instead focus on the clear channels from 1220 on down). And
though it's like pulling teeth to get QSLs these days, those can still
be attained, as well, as attested by DXers like David Jones, Pat
 Martin, and Martin Foltz.

I'm going to milk this hobby for all its worth for as long as it's
around, and I envision it being around for many (i.e., longer than
20!!) years to come. If AM stations here and in Mexico take Canada's
lead and start dropping like flies, that will leave a lot of exotic
loggings to be had from Central and South America and from the other
sides of both ponds. I'm an optimist, and I believe that there will
always be SOMETHING out there to DX on MW.

It's too bad when a station ignores their listeners. This one might go away
and their legacy for DXers will not be good. There will be little paperwork

As long as KFI is running IBOC it will be impossible for me to hear anything

KIDD 630 has been a very rare visitor through the years with so much
activity on 630 kHz. I first heard and QSL'd them back in Seward AK in
1966, Dave Allen PD signed the verie letter. The letterhead has a kid
dressed as Captain Kidd. Then in 1982, I finally heard them from the
Oregon Coast during a very heavy AU conditions knocking everything else
on 630 early in the evening. Later on ZK1KC Cook Islands took over 630
kHz. But for a time, KIDD was alone on the frequency with Adult
Standard, if I remember correctly. I mentioned to a DXer that I was
going to send a report and his reply was Good Luck, as they had a
track record of rarely answering QSL requests through the years. But I
got a reply on the first try. Not a verie letter, but Ray Kilman in the
News Dept typed a reply on the back of the Astoria Bridge post card I
included. He knew what a QSL was I guess, as he stated This is to
verify reception of KIDD Monterrey California on December 3, 1982. We
 appreciate your
report. He signed and typed his name. I am sorry to see them leave
the air, being such an old station and they had those call letters for
decades, from at least when I first heard them in the mid 60s. By the
way in 1966 their phone number was FRontier 2-8154, to give you an
idea how long ago that was.

This (QIP) is a great resource that I use regularly. It hasn't been updated
in since the summer of 2011 so you should look through past IRCA verie
signers columns too.

QSL collecting seems to be a dying part of the hobby and I'm glad to see
someone is interested in it.

I spend about half of my DXing time chasing shortwave utility stations and a
larger number of those stations have gone to sending a verification via
email. Some are letters and some are cards. I like them because several I've
received have photos of the stations and antennas. I wish more MW stations
would take the time to put together a nice email verie but I think the low
number of reception reports doesn't warrant the effort.

 Steve,

There are not many stations that continue to use the QSL card, but a
few more use letters. More and more a ppc or an e mail QSL is what many
get. Not what I like, but stations just do not reply by letter or card
much these days. You might check:

That site is updated a lot and have both MW and SW QSL's listed
worldwide. A huge selection under the U.S.

Re: [IRCA] IRCA Digest, Vol 128, Issue 30

2014-12-14 Thread Martin Foltz
Same here in Mission Viejo. 1630 XEUT signs off at midnight LT but usually
leaves their carrier on. Dennis, you should be able to null it out and hear
Wyoming. I heard KCJJ once at their sunrise so this is the time of year to
try for that.

Same on 1700, XEPE off and heard Brownsville.

The two named early on in this thread are locals for me, with XEPE
being slightly stronger than XEUT. Their sites are about 15 or so
 miles south of me.
Before XEUT signed on, I remember hearing KCJJ (i think that's their
call?) from Iowa. Some time ago when XEPE was off during a blackout, I
heard the Brownsville, TX station, and on 1630 the Wyoming station was
 heard then as well.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Fw: KKIM

2014-11-11 Thread Martin Foltz
I don't like using the word cheater because that indicates intent and that
isn't known. I know I've heard a few new stations recently and they were
definitely running day power at night. But the reason for that might be
equipment failure vs. intentional.

DXers should think twice about policing the bands. We should have good
relations with the stations and if there is a problem the most we should do
is contact the station about it. I'm one of the few of us who collect
verifications and I would hope that the stations still view our hobby as
something benign and not something that negatively affects their business.

station is audible underneath the UCI station WQTB222. I can hear parts of

 Hi everyone,

I have sad news to report that long time DXer and IRCAer, Dave Williams
has passed away. He just had his 80th birthday in the hospital. He had
been in poor health for sometime after his wife, Christina passed away
2 1/2 years ago. But I thought I would let everyone know. I have no
idea if a funeral is planned or what, but I will pass on any
information as soon as I know. His nephew will be in contact with me
later this week. Dave wanted me to have his receivers and QSL's, so it
looks like those will be preserved.

Folks,Well, I finally decided that I would hook up my SDR-IQ to my new
laptop (old one died several months ago). After installing the SW I
connected it up... didn't work. Some .dll was missing (which I found)
 and things were finally working!!
So, I'm experimenting with the SpectraVue program and was able to tune
in to 700 (right next to KIRO-710). What I heard was ESPN
programming... so I decided to look up 700 on radio-locator.com to see
who might be ESPN these days. Two sports stations were listed (one in
WA, the other in UT), neither of which I haven't logged. I figured it
was probably the one in WA... but clearly needed to wait for an ID.
While waiting I checked the UT station website and listened to the live
broadcast, which was in parallel to what I was hearing on the SDR-IQ. I
was unable to get the live broadcast to work on the WA website. Anyway,
after two TOH attempts to ID it, I zoned off for the night.
So... anyone know when ESPN stations give their local IDs? I could have
sworn that no local ID was given between :55 and :05 either time. Of
course, there was some traditional fading around the TOH (and extra
splash from KIRO then as well (the SDR-IQ display showed an increase in
 stuff on 710 then).
So, this sums up my first attempt to DX in quite some time (my hearing
is failing now). I promise not to give up, but it is double frustrating
to have hard hearing on top of infrequent IDing!!
I plan to join the IRCA contest as in the past it has provided impetus
to DX. Since retiring in 2013, I have not done that much DXing as I no
longer listen during my commute, duh!
 Best of DX,Phil BythewaySeattle WA

like XEWD has a new slogan.

For the past several weeks, I have been hearing an XE station beneath
my local KSHJ on 1430. I know it's an XE because they play the XE
National Anthem at midnight CDT (0500 UTC). I have tried and tried to
null KSHJ just enough to get a good ID on them, but no joy.

Well, this morning (14 Sep 2014) at 0316 AMCDT (0816 UTC), I heard the
following - Radio X, 14-30 AM. Well, all my scribbled notes from past
DX sessions over a six-month season tell me this should be XEWD, Ciudad
Miguel Aleman, Tamaul?pas, but their short ID of Radio X doesn't
 match anything I have.

Of course, I never verify any of my stations by station lists alone, so
this leaves me with a question ...

Is this XEWD with a new branding, or did I hear a different station?

 Thanks for your help!!

After 20+ years living in an apartment and condo, my wife and I have
 bought
 a house out
in the burbs with a BIG back yard and the potential for some REAL
 antennas.
Although my ham radio operating has been awesome all those years, using
 stealth antennas,
my MW and LW Dxing has not achieved its true potential because of
 antenna
limitations on a 7th story balcony in a concrete and steel building.

The new 'hood has underground utilities and on initial tests and
inspections prior to purchase, it was pretty darned quiet.

I look forward to finally being able to roll up my sleeves and work
 with
 the Big Boys
of the Northwest; Salmaniw, Hall-Patch, Atkins, Portzer and DeBock...
 the
 Rolling Stones
of the DX World up here.

 Wish me luck everyone!

Re: [IRCA] My AM SW targets

2014-04-16 Thread Martin Foltz
Paul,

I lived in Michigan until 1984 and I heard ZBVI once, probably late 70's. I
think I still have a recording of them. Wrote many times and never received
a verie. :(

You will need strong auroral conditions and a loop or antenna that's
directional south. Be patient but time is running out this season.

I also heard and QSL'd Solomon Islands but on 5020 kHz. You will need to
find out when others are hearing it and consistently listen for them during
that time. I suspect closer to 1 AM EDT would be your best bet.

Good luck.

 Paul,
I can't speak to shortwave, but here are some thoughts for chasing and
 logging targets:
 (1) Be patient and sit on the frequency at optimum times for a good
 half hour;
 (2) If nothing yields after half an hour move on and DX other channels
 or do something else.
 (3) If ZBVI (or any other target) has a webstream, have that running at
the same time, and wait for a parallel.
 (4) Know optimum times a station is likely to appear (sunset, sunrise,
 pre/post-sunset, pre/post-sunrise, overnight, special sign-on/off
times, times when an anthem is played, etc.
 (5) Do all of these, especially when conditions are working more to
your target's advantage (ie., with ZBVI 780 when cx are auroral and
Chicago is likely to take a hit of some kind and also yield more than
 super-pest Radio Coro Venezuela.
 (6) If auroral conditions are hot, and a southern target isn't coming
in, and you feel like taking a break, you can always check a half hour
 or hour later...
 (7) If conditions are really hot and you can't be there, record...
 (8) Record all your DX anyhow. It's amazing how often an ID or other
valuable clue pops out of the mud with incredible suddenness. Recording
spares the DXer that awful, Did I really just hear that sensation.
 My 8 cents worth...
