[IRCA] New TIS on the air

2014-10-19 Thread Martin Foltz
Another new local TIS is on the air.

1680 WQUR867 Irvine CA, "The Toll Roads Radio AM 16-80" with short loop on
how to pay for the toll road by a man with ID in each announcement.

Just looked on the FCC website and license just granted 9/23/14 and expires
3/22/15 (6 months).

Now I have 3 HAR/TIS stations in Irvine! They're taking over the spectrum.

Other news, WPMW407 San Juan Capistrano on 1620 has been off for months
leaving KNNN868 in Santa Ana alone on the frequency.

I found one of these AM-FM portables at the Goodwill. I didn't need it but
couldn't just leave it there. Only problem is the back battery/line cord
cover is missing. I plugged it in and it plays. When I have time I'll see
how well it pulls in stations.

Anyone with a donor radio I would love to find a cover.

[IRCA] WQUR868 1690 Anaheim CA

2014-10-29 Thread Martin Foltz
After receiving a prepared card from the Toll Roads I tried for their
station on 1690 kHz. The FCC lists it as WQUR868 in Anaheim. I'm not sure
why the FCC allowed this since there is a station in Irvine on 1690. The
station is audible underneath the UCI station WQTB222. I can hear parts of
the toll road message so I sent the v/s an email. He's out of the office
until next week so I'll see if he sends an email verie for that one. Might
as well try.

Re: [IRCA] [NRC-AM] Fw: KKIM

2014-11-11 Thread Martin Foltz
I don't like using the word "cheater" because that indicates intent and that
isn't known. I know I've heard a few new stations recently and they were
definitely running day power at night. But the reason for that might be
equipment failure vs. intentional.

DXers should think twice about policing the bands. We should have good
relations with the stations and if there is a problem the most we should do
is contact the station about it. I'm one of the few of us who collect
verifications and I would hope that the stations still view our hobby as
something benign and not something that negatively affects their business.

Re: [IRCA] QSL Card

2014-12-23 Thread Martin Foltz
Here is my list from the past couple years.

2008: KVNR-1480, KZSJ-1120
2012: KRSN-1490, KRPI-1550, KBOI-670, KKXA-1520, KTKZ-1380, KTCT-1050,
KNBR-680, KCKM-1330

Not many QSL cards anymore and not many letters either.

Good luck.

Re: [IRCA] QSL Card

2014-12-23 Thread Martin Foltz
This (QIP) is a great resource that I use regularly. It hasn't been updated
in since the summer of 2011 so you should look through past IRCA verie
signers columns too.

QSL collecting seems to be a dying part of the hobby and I'm glad to see
someone is interested in it.

I spend about half of my DXing time chasing shortwave utility stations and a
larger number of those stations have gone to sending a verification via
email. Some are letters and some are cards. I like them because several I've
received have photos of the stations and antennas. I wish more MW stations
would take the time to put together a nice email verie but I think the low
number of reception reports doesn't warrant the effort.

[IRCA] KIDD-630

2014-12-26 Thread Martin Foltz
I read in the latest IRCA newsletter that KIDD will go silent at the end of
the year. They used to make it here before KFI turned on IBOC at night. Back
in 2009 I sent them a reception report without a response (follow ups too)
so I gave it a try again today with an email to the PD and Traffic Dir Kevin
Kahl. He was there back in 2009. I also asked for an update on what's going
on and I will forward that if he responds.

Re: [IRCA] KIDD-630

2014-12-26 Thread Martin Foltz
It's too bad when a station ignores their listeners. This one might go away
and their legacy for DXers will not be good. There will be little paperwork
(veries) for people to remember them by.

As long as KFI is running IBOC it will be impossible for me to hear anything
on 630.

Maybe I'll receive a response to my email. I'm working on 150 California
station veries and I need every one I can get.

Re: [IRCA] Modem Noise & KIDD

2015-01-01 Thread Martin Foltz
I didn't receive a response to my email to the PD at KIDD. Not surprised,
he's probably busy trying to find a new job. At least I have a couple
recordings.

Patrick, congrats on solving the noise problem. Yes, I think it's called a
Faraday cage. When I worked at Conexant they tested RF ICs in Mexicali and I
heard they had to test them in a room that had the walls, floor and ceiling
grounded. Too bad the Modem designers saved a few pennies in the power
supply filter design.

Re: [IRCA] Radio shack to file for bankruptcy

2015-01-15 Thread Martin Foltz
I stopped by one of our local RS stores last week to see about replacing a
screen on an iPhone6. They said give them a month or two. So they are (or
were) keeping up with repairs on the new phones. Not many customers and I
didn't really spend much time in there. RS obviously needs a new business
model. Cell phone plans is too competitive but there is a need for cell
phone repair. Lots of little shops around but RS could draw in more
customers with their name and if they were able to do repairs while the
customer waited. They should have jumped into all the game machines for TV
and the games. Actually anything that you can attach to your TV.

Here in Orange County we have a couple electronics stores for components but
we've lost a couple over the years. Fry's has some components and then we
have MARVAC. There is also a Ham Radio Outlet in the area.

My report to EDI media's email bounced with the following message:

KSL Hash is heard here in So Cal on 1170 but it's still a good frequency

[IRCA] XECL-990 Mexicali

2015-02-18 Thread Martin Foltz
The past two nights I've heard a Mexican station on 990 with the slogan
"Nuestra Musica 9-90 AM". XECL in Mexicali is the typical station on 990. I
haven't heard them give an ID yet but do hear Mexican ads and did hear the
NA last night at midnight. Maybe someone closer that can hear them during
the day can verify this.

[IRCA] KFSD-1450/KSPA-1510

2015-02-21 Thread Martin Foltz
Just wanted to post this after a little monitoring in the car today. I know
most of this has been posted, I think by Mike Sanburn.

KFSD-1450 uses slogan "The cow, cow AM 14-50".
KSPA-1510 uses slogan "AM 15-10 the kicker".

What I did notice is that both play the same country songs. KSPA is a
delayed a couple minutes. If I have time I'll listen to both with a clock
and get a better measurement of the delay.

[IRCA] Bell & Howell 5 MHz oscilloscope for sale

2015-03-14 Thread Martin Foltz
I bought this at a garage sale over 20 years ago and haven't used it. It
doesn't work but it does have a large lit "dot" that comes on but doesn't
sweep. It comes with all the manuals that I have with it including the
assembly manual. I suspect that the person who built it made a mistake. I
remember going through the assembly steps and I noticed a transistor
installed incorrectly. It might just be an easy fix but will take some time
to find the problem. $10 plus shipping, almost giving it away.

Re: [IRCA] New MW QSL (KBRV 800)

2013-10-28 Thread Martin Foltz
I would need to look but I bet at least half of my QSLs in the past 9 years
are prepared cards. A few professionally printed cards but several homemade
type QSLs. Very few letters on professionally printed letterhead but many on
plain paper and some of them have station logos added.

The problem with prepared cards is they are unique and I have many that
weren't even signed.

There are still DXer friendly stations so don't stop sending reports. I know
the cost is around $1 for me to send a report and with a follow up it could
cost a couple dollars for a QSL so it's important to send a professional
letter and check QSL lists for v/s information.

Hope to see more QSLs reported.

Re: [IRCA] 1240 kHz grave yard unid

2013-12-13 Thread Martin Foltz
I couldn't identify either one.

Here in So Cal at night I hear KNRY, KJOP, KSUE and KSMX depending on
conditions. I heard KNRY a couple nights ago playing Christmas music.

Daytime it's KEXY and KNXN, both Spanish.

[IRCA] Mexican log update

2014-02-20 Thread Martin Foltz
For all those who have the 2013 IRCA Mexican Log, here are a few changes.

1030 XESDD slogan back to "La Tremenda 10-30 AM" per loggings by me
1050 XEBCS slogan is "La Radio de Sur California" per loggings by me. Seems
to have increased power.
1050 XED slogan is "Radiorama Siglo 21" per loggings by me. Haven't heard "W
Radio"
1350 XEZD slogan is "La Incondicional" per website
1470 XEHI slogan is "La Consentida" per loggings by Glenn Hauser and also on
website

Add the following network:
Grupo Mi Radio, www.grupomiradio.mx
790 XEFE La Pegajosa
920 XELE La Preferida
1090 XEMCA La Grande de las Huastecas
1310 XEAM La Mandona

Re: [IRCA] My AM & SW targets

2014-04-16 Thread Martin Foltz
Paul,

I lived in Michigan until 1984 and I heard ZBVI once, probably late 70's. I
think I still have a recording of them. Wrote many times and never received
a verie. :(

You will need strong auroral conditions and a loop or antenna that's
directional south. Be patient but time is running out this season.

I also heard and QSL'd Solomon Islands but on 5020 kHz. You will need to
find out when others are hearing it and consistently listen for them during
that time. I suspect closer to 1 AM EDT would be your best bet.

Good luck.

2014-07-18 Thread Martin Foltz
I sent an email to the GM Marty Basch but haven't heard back from him. I'll
send the CE a reception report in the mail.

Thanks Dennis, sounds like they had an equipment failure.

Re: [IRCA] XE Station on 1430 AM

2014-09-14 Thread Martin Foltz
I'm working on the latest Mexican Log and in the IRCA bulletin (Volume 51,
Number 25) Glen Hauser chased this one down and heard an ID that sounded
like "La X 14-30" and later "... desde Ciudad Miguel Aleman." So it sounds
like XEWD has a new slogan.

Re: [IRCA] Clear Channel changes its name

2014-09-16 Thread Martin Foltz
I've found that all but Clear Channel Los Angeles (KLAC/KFI/KEIB) have been
kind enough to send out verifications. Some took follow up reports and many
returned prepared cards but eventually they responded. That's better than
many of the others.

2014-09-18 Thread Martin Foltz
If anyone has any Mexican station updates I would appreciate an email or
posting. I'm finishing up this years' log by the end of the month.

I've used logs from IRCA Volume 51 so don't need those.

[IRCA] Misc MW info and Football

2017-08-10 Thread MARTIN FOLTZ
My wife and I were in Sequoia a week and a half ago and I was able to listen to
some AM stations including this possible slogan change.

1370 KGEN Tulare CA using La Ley slogan and announcing 94.5 FM.

And a local format change.

900 KALI West Covina CA heard last night in Chinese with ToH ID for Radio
Chinese 1300/1600. Wonder if this is a filler before a format change or an
actual change.

Local football.

100.3 KSWD The Sound is the Los Angeles Rams station.

640 KFI is the Los Angeles Chargers station.
