I've just added two new tutorials and also put up an older file that I had
run out of space for some months ago. They are as follows:
Installing the video intercept without sited help when running the portable
version of JAWS. Directions for using Singe a neat little CD/DVD data disk
burning program. Lastly a tutorial for using Winamp by Blake Roberts. Also
I've just added Disk Keeper Light to the programs page. I hope that folks
will be able to make some use out of these new additions.

[JAWS-Users] Re: A request.

2007-01-10 Thread Victor Gouveia

Hi Max,

Is this the Windows Firewall, or another firewall that is installed with
Windows live one care?

If it is the Windows firewall, there is a facility where you can allow
exceptions in the firewall and the like, such as URL, IP addresses and
ports.

When this is done, you should be allowed to transfer files without
hindrances.

I'm not sure if Live one care allows this sort of exceptions or not, but I'd
imagine that there should be some kind of ability to do that.

Hi Mich,

Have you actually tried using the programs you've outlined?

If you have problems using it, chances are that they aren't Jaws friendly.

You should try using Jaws cursors and virtual cursors or even maximizing the
windows to see if that helps with their respective accessibilities.

[JAWS-Users] updated guide lines, please read

2007-01-10 Thread David Ferrin

JAWS Users Mailing List Guidelines Page

JAWS Users Mailing List Guidelines Page

Hello and welcome to the JAWS Users list. This list has been created for The
purpose of discussing all aspects of the JAWS for Windows screen reader
Program.

So everything that pertains to JAWS is fair game. Such as asking about what
software packages work well with JAWS or how to make them work even better
with
scripts, keyboard short cuts and so forth. Another example could be
requesting information on how to do something in Microsoft Word, which as we
all know
works very well with JAWS, but you need to know how to do a certain task or
want to learn a way to accomplish it more efficiently.

Now this is a very important point in my opinion, asking the list for exact
instructions every time is not a good thing to do for a major reason. It
creates
a dependency situation even if you don't realize it does.

The ideal place I am hoping the list will arrive at some day is that
everybody no matter how new they might happen to be with JAWS or computers
will have
the confidence to try things on their own, and yet feel if they get stuck
the list will be there to help put them back on track. Trust me when I say
that
help is quicker to arrive for somebody who is well known to ask for it last
than first. So try it yourself first what ever it might happen to be. If you
get stuck then let the list know what you've done to try and resolve your
current dilemma. Then I'm sure help will arrive with in short order. Next a
post
asking if there is a software package that does a specific task and works
well with JAWS is perfectly fine.

The rules of conduct are quite simple and straightforward. Be polite and
Patient with others. There will be absolutely no fighting, and no bashing of
Freedom
Scientific on here at all. If you have a problem with them then I suggest
you take it up with Freedom Scientific directly. Please try to keep subject
lines
relevant and descriptive as possible. Also any news letters except those
that directly pertain to JAWS should not be posted to the list prior to
receiving
moderator approval. Attachments should never be sent to the list at all for
any reason what so ever.

When contacting any of the list moderators privately please be descriptive
in the subject line as to the purpose of the message. Many of us simply
delete
messages from people we don't know. At the present time there are around 200
subscribers to this list, so we can't possibly know everybody on here.

Also, if you have a question for the list that falls within the guidelines,
then post it accordingly. Don't contact the management team with questions
that
are more appropriate for the list itself. Your question may or may not
receive an answer for a number of reasons.

Everybody should familiarize themselves with the content contained in the
footer message that accompanies every message posted to the list. There you
will
find the group web address along with some other relevant information
pertaining to contacting the management team ETC.

The discussion of anything illegal is absolutely forbidden, along with
flirting or other such inappropriate activities. This is not a high tech
swap shop
or anything of that nature at all. This means that goods and or services
will not be bought or sold using this forum. If you know a given subject is
off
topic then don't post it. Simply placing off topic in the subject line does
not make it all right. Lastly please no jokes, virus warnings, recipes,
safety
tips, or pleas to help dying kids, should ever be forwarded to the list.

My hope is that this list will always be a place where everybody no matter
what their particular skill level can feel safe to ask any question at all
with
in the guidelines that I have set forth. It is my experience that such rules
of conduct are important to keep good people on the list.

[JAWS-Users] JAWS Internet Radio

2007-01-10 Thread Donnie Parrett

Hey Guys Gals,

There is a radio station in Lexington, Kentucky that I enjoy listening too. It
is difficult,
however, for me to log on to listen if I don't have someone sighted to help me.
 From the looks of
the page, the best I can tell, there are about 3 columns of stuff on the page.
The first column
seems to have a bunch of writing. The second column has several pictures and
the third colum has
several little boxes with messages written in them. To be able to listen to
the live radio feed,
you have to click on one of the little boxes on the right hand side of the
screen. The box says
Click here to listen to newstalk 590 WVLK live. Could someone please check
this site out and let
me know how I can get over to the box to listen? The link to the radio station
is listed below.

[JAWS-Users] Re: JAWS Internet Radio

2007-01-10 Thread Robert S. Batchelor

Here is what I try on difficult web pages; this came from FS site I think

Dealing With Difficult Pages

JAWS make reading and using the Internet easy and fun. However, Web page
authors must follow certain guidelines to make their pages accessible to
JAWS and other screen reading software. JAWS reads most pages well, even if
they are not designed with accessibility in mind. Occasionally, you may come
across a page that is poorly designed or difficult to use with JAWS. In this
section, you will learn some tricks for dealing with these difficult Web
pages.

Reading Pages that Refresh Automatically

Some Web pages automatically refresh - or reload - after a certain period of
time. Usually this is done to update information on the page in a timely
fashion. When a page refreshes, JAWS moves you back to the beginning of the
page. This can interrupt what you are doing. To see an example of a page
like this, go to the refreshing version of the E-Stocks sample page and try
to read through it. This version of the E-Stocks sample page is designed to
refresh every few seconds so that the stock quotes remain accurate.

Tip: Notice that after the page refreshes automatically, JAWS informs you
how often this page reloads. You must be using Beginner verbosity to hear
this message.

To make pages that automatically refresh easier to work with, do the
following:
List of 6 items
1. Go to the refreshing version of the E-Stocks sample page.
2. Press INSERT+V.
3. Press R until you select Refresh Page - automatically.
4. Press the SPACEBAR to choose Off.
5. Press ENTER.
6. Try reading through the refreshing version of the E-Stocks sample page
again. The page still refreshes every 10 seconds, but you can read the text
without being interrupted or returning to the top of the page.
List end

Working with Improperly Tagged Images

Sometimes a Web page author does not assign alternate text, a title, or a
long description to images on the page. JAWS ignores images like these
because the program cannot provide you with any useful information. However,
if the image is also a link, then JAWS announces the location (or file path)
of the image. You can also view the destination URL of the image link.

Tip: You can also have JAWS announce images on the page with no descriptive
text that aren't links. Alternatively, you can tell JAWS to ignore all
images on the page. To do this, press INSERT+V and select Graphics in HTML
- tagged. Choose All to hear all images on the page, or choose None if
you don't want JAWS to announce any images.

The image below this paragraph is the Freedom Scientific corporate logo. It
is also a link to the Freedom Scientific Web site. This image does not have
any descriptive text. When you move to the image, JAWS reads the name of the
file. Unfortunately, in this case the file name is also not descriptive.

Images/image4

To obtain some more information about this image, do the following:
List of 5 items
1. Press INSERT+V.
2. Press A to select As a Last Resort.
3. Press the SPACEBAR to choose Link's URL.
4. Press ENTER.
5. Press SHIFT+TAB to move back to the Freedom Scientific logo image link.
Notice that JAWS now reads the destination of this graphic link, which is
www.FreedomScientific.com. List end

Ignoring Flash Content

Some Web pages use a format called Flash to display animated, dynamic
content. You can select Flash links; activate buttons, read information, and
type within edit fields just like on most Web pages. Flash animations are
presented as part of the page, and JAWS announces when you enter and exit
the animation.

Since Flash is a very graphical format, some pages that use Flash may have
little or no useful text content that JAWS can read and use to tell you what
is on the screen. There are two Internet Explorer verbosity options that
will help you work with these types of pages. To change these options, press
INSERT+V.
List of 2 items
. Flash Movies - Turn this option off to ignore Flash content on Web pages.
. Refresh Flash Movies - This option allows you to specify how often active
content is refreshed. Active Content includes ActiveX controls and Flash
animations. You can turn this option off to prevent active content from
refreshing. List end

Ignoring Advertisements

There are two types of advertisements that you will often encounter while
browsing the Internet: pop-ups and banners. Pop-up ads automatically create
a new browser window that contains the advertisement. Banner ads are inline
frames that appear within the page content and display advertisements.

Pop-Up Ads

Because many Web pages have legitimate reasons to create new browser
windows, JAWS does not have a setting that prevents pop-up ads. When a
pop-up ad displays, you can press ALT+F4 to close the new browser window
that displays. Alternatively, you can purchase or download a third party
program that blocks pop-up ads.

Banner Ads

If you want JAWS to temporarily ignore banner ads on a page, do the
following:
List of 4 items
1.

thanks for the ideas, and I'm glad to say that it worked, well, sort of.

It wouldn't allow me to put the folder back in the local folders area, so I had

[JAWS-Users] Outlook Distress collapsed messages

2007-01-10 Thread Dale Leavens
I need some help using this darn Outlook Distress with Jaws.

For no reason I can figure it just now started declaring certain messages
collapsed and if I delete it wants to delete them all unless I go to the view
menu and click on Expand. Now I understand the utility of this facility and
wouldn't mind if I had asked to use this facility but I did not. It seemed to
self-select over night last night.

I have gone through my menus, the View menu in particular but don't see where
to disable this feature. I don't have much in the way of toolbars and never use
them but don't see anything there either.

I suspect this is one of those Windows XP Pro random settings features for
those of us perceived to have nothing else to do but play with our computers
all day but I cannot say for sure.

If someone could tell me how to make it go away I would be appreciative.

Thanks, and I hope this isn't too far off topic.

 Hi Max,

Is this the Windows Firewall, or another firewall that is installed with
 Windows live one care?

If it is the Windows firewall, there is a facility where you can allow
exceptions in the firewall and the like, such as URL, IP addresses and
 ports.

When this is done, you should be allowed to transfer files without
 hindrances.

I'm not sure if Live one care allows this sort of exceptions or not, but
 I'd
imagine that there should be some kind of ability to do that.
