The benefit I can think of is that JAWS will not be in the alt tab list, so
if you have multiple applications open you can alt tab to them without alt

the taskbar. It's just personal preference.

non-visible both in the system tray and the task bar, and that's why I was
wondering what the benefits of that should be. But avoiding JAWS to appear
on the task bar is a *very great* feature, and especially for those of us
who often run many applications simultaneously. Having JAWS running from
the system tray would be quite frustrating in these cases!

Oh, I am *very* sorry about some misspelled words in my last message, but
I never proofread it. But they could 'look' quite funny when using JAWS
with any synthesizer. But Eloquence with JAWS or some other synthesizer is
a very good proofreader, but only if the language used is supported like
Finnish, for instance. But reading Finnish with American or Brittish
English checked could be too funny to cope with, and that happened me
while doing some Business English exercises for my present school, and I
had to stop working for a while because of un-controlled laughing!

And finally: Should smileys bee used on that list at all, or do they only
make the reading of messages more confusing? Or could they be replaced
with something like smile or be totally avoided? But perhaps reading
Finnish with English checked is too funny to describe with any smiley?

Very many thanks to you, David Griffith, for your very helpful
 information
 below.

I can tell you all that the blue screen problem is solved by that time
 by
installing another display driver on the computer mentioned, but the
information you gave could be *very* helpful in a situation like that in
the future, and a also have plans to update my own laptop after
3-4-year-usage of my present one, and I still hav a well-working desktop
 here in my home office.

I would -by the way - *never* use only a laptop, not even a good one,
 for
all my work, but have a desktop-laptop-network instead. I workd maby two
years having only a laptop in usage, but that became very frustrating a)
because of lacking peripheral connections, b) because of unusable
integrated audio hardware in that particular model etc. And then there
 is
the maintenance as a whole; in a desktop you can update almost every
single unit of the hardware if needed, but not in a laptop. But if
 having
a well customized desktop in usage all the time, the problematic issues
 in
your laptop aren't so hard to cope with, because you still have a
hopefully well-functioning computer in usage. But in the earlier days
having more than one computer in usage was more rare because of higher
hardware prices than nowadays. Today a well-funcioning basic desktop
 unit
can be set up by approcimately 400 euros, but using the cheapest
 hardware
parts. That unit could be used as a testing unit, for instance, and you
could still do your main work using your main unit built of better
components. Perhaps you still may prefer to use a separate soundcard or
display adapter instead of an integrated one etc. But why use any
expensive parts if the unit is beeing used for some test or server
 purposes only?

Have any of you - by the way - noticed any difference in JAWS's behavior
when using integrated soundcards and display adapters compared to using
separate ones? My friend mentioned is an audiophile and deals with
professional audio software, and he usis, of course, a separate
 soundcard
like AVE64 or something like that, but I am not as much involved in that
than he is. But even I am using something else than basic loudspeakers
 and
 headphones in my setup.

In ;my experience blue screen are more often than not Video driver
 issues.

This can be very hard to correct and in the worst case scenarios I have
 had
to reinstall windows itself to avoid these problems.

Before this drastic step you could try the following.
 1. Go to the web site of your video card manufacturer and download the
latest driver and install this. You may have to repair or reinstall
 Jaws
after this. Unfortunately some video driver setups and their websites
 may
not be fully accessible and you may need sighted help but you could
 have
 a
 go.

 2. If this does not work then reduce hardware acceleration on your
 video
card to 80%. I have found Jaws works on my system at 80% but no lower
 and
this can greatly reduce blue screen crashes.

To reduce hardware acceleration on XP Pro

 1. Go to Control Panel
 2. Go to Display
 3. Press Control Tab until you get to Settings Tab.
 4. Tab until you get to

There is no benefit to be had from it being neither in the System Tray nor
on the taskbar, if such were possible (which it isn't). I like it in the
system Tray, running in the background like some other apps (such as
antivirus, Juice, etc.). There are some options it is easier to change in
JAWS by having it there, than having to go into the Config Manager with its

Hello,

excel gives column width in characters. at least in Excel 2000.

Type a value from 0 (zero) through 255 to change the
width of columns where you have selected cells.
This number represents the number of characters
that can be displayed in a cell formatted with the
standard font. If the column width is 0, the column is hidden.

In JAWS 8 the command is Insert+f+f. That is hold down the Insert or JAWS
key, and press the letter F twice. This will give you a virtual JAWS
 window
with all kinds of info about the cell. Unfortunately, using this command
will give you how many points wide and high the cell is, for example 48
points wide by 12 points high. When you obtain the column width from the
column submenu off of the menu bar, you will be told that the cell is 8.4
wide. I have no idea what type of measurement Microsoft is using.

Another thing to keep in mind is that there does not appear to be a way to
obtain the width of a range of cells that are merged. As best that I can
figure out, you can only obtain the width of the cell in the first column
 in
 the range.

Let me know if this does not make any sense and I will try to explain it
 differently.

[JAWS-Users] Silencing Deleted in OE JFW 7.1

2007-10-08 Thread Margaret Thomas
Hi All,

I want to get JAWS 7.1 to stop saying deleted when I press the delete
key from within the message body in OE 6. I had saved some instructions,
but am not finding the line in the JAWSDelete script that the instructions
say to comment out. I may be behind in my caffeine consumption, but the
line doesn't seem to be the same as in the DeleteMessage script and I don't
want to mess up.

The instructions I have say:

In OE, press insert 0 (on the number row) to open the OE scripts file.

You need to comment out two lines in the scripts.

Press control L (or go to the script menu, script list) and press D and find

the script

DeleteMessage and enter.

Arrow down in the script to the line that says the following and put a

semicolon in front of it like this:

;SayFormattedMessage (ot_status, msg_DeleteMessage_L, msg_DeleteMessage_S)

Now press control L again and this time press J and then find the script

JAWSDelete and enter.

You will find the same line as above in that script also.

Put a semicolon in front of the line in this script too.

Then press control S to compile, alt f4 to leave script manager.

The OS is XP Home with SP 2 and IE 7 isinstalled.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Margaret

The benefit I can think of is that JAWS will not be in the alt tab list, so
if you have multiple applications open you can alt tab to them without alt
tabbing to JAWS. I like JAWS in my system tray, but some people prefer it in
the taskbar. It's just personal preference.

Re: [JAWS-Users] how accessible is office 2007?

2007-10-08 Thread Crabb, Nolan
I'm not sure you got a reply to your earlier message regarding Office 07
and its accessibility.

I'm using it both at home and at work, and I[m enjoying it immensely.
It works better with JAWS 9 than it does with JAWS 8, but even with 8,
you'll be fine.

There's a bit of a learning curve, but it's nothing you won't be able to
handle. I'd say don't be afraid of making the transition. You'll find
Office 07 has some excellent features that can make life easier.

Nolan

By using this link below you can reach the basic HTML version directly -

http://mail.google.com/mail/h/

There is only one identity you would need to use, which is the user id
and password of your gmail. Basic HTML has section headers now, to
find what's more is available in basic HTML see the following page for

if you are useing it in basic html, the emails should just be links
where you can just click on. You can also use h to switch from various
  headings for better navigation.

Don't know if I really caught what you are looking for, but by default
JAWS is actually shown in an application window when 'alttabbing' to that
 window.

Can you have jaws start up without it in the systems tray and without
it showing up when you alt tab between applications?

When being in the JAWS window, press the ALT key, when the Options menu
will appear, and then arrow once to the right to open the Options tree
view. The first option in the tree view should be 'Basics...'. Press
 Enter
and tab to 'Run JAWS from System Tray' and check it by pressing the Space
key. Then press Enter, close JAWS like other applications with ALT + F4
and restart it. Now JAWS shouldn't appear as an application window on
 your
 screen anymore.

Was it that what you were looking for?

There is no benefit to be had from it being neither in the System Tray nor
on the taskbar, if such were possible (which it isn't). I like it in the
system Tray, running in the background like some other apps (such as
antivirus, Juice, etc.). There are some options it is easier to change in
JAWS by having it there, than having to go into the Config Manager with
 its
 slews of settings.

You are very right, and I prefer to like JAWS running from the system tray
too, and just for avoiding alt tabbing to it when having multiple
applications open. But as I've understood, now JAWS was wantid to be
non-visible both in the system tray and the task bar, and that's why I was
wondering what the benefits of that should be. But avoiding JAWS to appear
on the task bar is a *very great* feature, and especially for those of us
who often run many applications simultaneously. Having JAWS running from
the system tray would be quite frustrating in these cases!

Thanks. Just it doesn't show in the msconfig list and since it resides in
the sys tray I guess I just figured any program that was there also was in
the list of msconfig...

If you don't put jaws in your sys-tray does this mean when you alt tab
 your
going to run into it that way?
Can you have jaws start up without it in the systems tray and without it
showing up when you alt tab between applications?

 Thanks,

[JAWS-Users] Spybot 1.5 search results

2007-10-08 Thread Lisa
Hello everyone,
I did a scan with the new Spybot version 1.5 today. When the scan was done I
wanted to look at the search results, but using the arrow keys to do this
didn't work this time. I can fix the problems, but I can't get into the search
results. I have the jaws scripts installed, and the hot key for viewing the
search results is control shift l, but this didn't work. I am running jaws 8,
and windows XP home. If anyone can help me out with this I would really
appreciate it!
Take care,
Lisa

Re: [JAWS-Users] Antivirus Software and JAWS 8.0/9.0

2007-10-08 Thread Crabb, Nolan
You asked whether there is much trouble setting up Eset's NOD32 to
work with JAWS.

I didn't really do anything to it to change it in any way, and it works
nicely for me with both JFW and Window-Eyes. Those people on the list
who don't like tree views will probably not want to use this product,
since its interface is presented as a tree view. It has a reasonably
robust spyware component that comes with it for that price, so from my
perspective, it's a bargain.

NOD32 from www.eset.com is an outstanding product for around $40 U.S. as
I recall. It's both highly accessible with JAWS and extremely thorough
in catching and killing the digital bad guys.

Oops I think you meant the tree view as when it says something is closed and
you have to right arrow on it to open it and then arrow down to the next
thing as you have to do already in most things or help menus, is this right?

You asked whether there is much trouble setting up Eset's NOD32 to
 work with JAWS.

I didn't really do anything to it to change it in any way, and it works
nicely for me with both JFW and Window-Eyes. Those people on the list
who don't like tree views will probably not want to use this product,
since its interface is presented as a tree view. It has a reasonably
robust spyware component that comes with it for that price, so from my
 perspective, it's a bargain.

While on a web page you want to send, press Alt T and up arrow to read
mail...enter on that and then down arrow to the send by page... or send by
link...enter on your choice here. This will open your email client and same
as if you were sending an email. Just fill out all the fields and send it
like you normally do...

Re: [JAWS-Users] Antivirus Software and JAWS 8.0/9.0

2007-10-08 Thread Crabb, Nolan
You asked whether a tree view is the same as a list view.

Not quite. A tree view does generally allow you to tap the first letter
of the item you want to select and jump there immediately, but the tree
view has to be open first. That's where a tree view differs from a list
view like your desktop. A tree view can be opened or expanded with the
arrow keys or in some cases with Enter. If you have JAWS 9 currently
running on your machine, the Insert+V keystroke opens a tree view of
many of the settings you may want to change. This is a perfect example
of a tree view, come to think of it. So it's slightly different from a
list view.

So it's slightly different from a
 list view.

Don't know if I really caught what you are looking for, but by default
JAWS is actually shown in an application window when 'alttabbing' to
 that
   window.

Can you have jaws start up without it in the systems tray and without
it showing up when you alt tab between applications?

When being in the JAWS window, press the ALT key, when the Options
 menu
will appear, and then arrow once to the right to open the Options tree
view. The first option in the tree view should be 'Basics...'. Press
   Enter

 F4

Was it that what you were looking for?

2007-10-08 Thread Patti
Hey Marilyn,
I just did all these steps. I have Jaws 8, IE 7, and window XP.
This worked.
hth Patti

Sending a web page link to an email or the Desktop

1 While on a web page you want to send,

2 alt F for file,

3 down arrow to send submenu (or letter E),

4 right arrow

5 then you have your choice of send page, send link, or shortcut to the
desktop.

6 enter on your choice here.

7 This will open your email client as same as if you were sending an email.
Just fill out all the fields and send it like you normally do...

Yes it takes up resources no matter where it happens to be. Putting it in

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws in System Tray

2007-10-08 Thread Sharon
Wait a minute. I haven't been following all these threads, but something
David wrote caught my attention. If I could have it in the system tray, but
still have it start up automatically, then I'd have the best of what I
thought were two different worlds. Is this actually possible? Write me off
list if this is old hat; I haven't been following the conversation until
now.

Yes it takes up resources no matter where it happens to be. Putting it in
the system trey simply removes it from the alt tab order which for me works
much better. It is a matter of personal choice is all.

There is no benefit to be had from it being neither in the System Tray
nor
on the taskbar, if such were possible (which it isn't). I like it in
the
system Tray, running in the background like some other apps (such as
antivirus, Juice, etc.). There are some options it is easier to change
in
JAWS by having it there, than having to go into the Config Manager with
   its
   slews of settings.

No. I want to have it out of the sys tray, I know how to do this..
But if it's not in the sys tray then will it show when I alt tab around?
I want it not in the sys tray and I don't want to alt tab and find it
   there
either, but I do want it to start up at system bootup.
   Is this clear?

Don't know if I really caught what you are looking for, but by default
JAWS is actually shown in an application window when 'alttabbing' to
that
   window.

Can you have jaws start up without it in the systems tray and without
it showing up when you alt tab between applications?

When being in the JAWS window, press the ALT key, when the Options menu
will appear, and then arrow once to the right to open the Options tree
view. The first option in the tree view should be 'Basics...'. Press
   Enter
and tab to 'Run JAWS from System Tray' and check it by pressing the
Space
key. Then press Enter, close JAWS like other applications with ALT + F4
and restart it. Now JAWS shouldn't appear as an application window on
   your
   screen anymore.

Was it that what you were looking for?

   Best regards,

still have it start up automatically, then I'd have the best of what I
thought were two different worlds.

I want it not in the sys tray and I don't want to alt tab and find it

either, but I do want it to start up at system bootup.

Re: [JAWS-Users] new section to the list guidelines

2007-10-08 Thread David A Ferrin
Yes I can of course, but the fact is if you don't know what such a thing is
then most likely you'll never use one. Basically some people who work in
offices can set their systems to reply to any and all email messages with a
standard response for example I'll be out of the office for the following
days. This isn't good to send such automatic messages to a mailing list
because it would be never ending. Besides it makes list owners very angry as
you can imagine cluttering up the list with garbage to say the least.

Re: [JAWS-Users] HP and touch pad

2007-10-08 Thread Sun Sounds of Arizona
I have an HP, and the touchpad manual button is great. It's just a recessed
button above the touch pad which is a toggle. When the touch pad is active,
it is very easy to accidentally move your mouse cursor, scroll, or even
accidentally click on something. Since the touch pad is in front of the
keyboard on my laptop, it doesn't take much to accidentally do things I
don't want to do. But pressing the button, the mouse pad is inactive and I
can't screw things up. It has no effect on the JAWS cursor which still
works fine. Then, if a sighted person needs to use the machine, a press of
the button will reactivate the mouse pad.

I am not sure why one would need to have a manual button to turn the

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Asus Laptop and Video Intercept Manager

** A copy of this message will be sent to the person involved. **

 Hello everybody!

As a very new member of this list I would ask you sincerely what to do in
 a case as follows:

A friend of mine purchased an Asus laptop after finding HP bad because the
lack of the On/Off button for the touch pad, which has been on earlier HP
models. I told him that despite the possibility to turn the touch pad on
and off from the control panel, the opportunity to do this from a physical
button also is quite important particularly for a blind user like him and
myself. So far so good, but the JAWS installation caused *serious*
problems after restarting, or trying to restart the system: it caused a
video intercept incompatibility message and a blue screen situation, and
because of loss of any sighted assistance at the moment I worsened the
situation by retrying to start the system over again. And now, very
recently before the writing moment of that message, it became clear to me
what caused the total crash of the system, which could probably have been
avoided if I'd had sighted assistance at the *critical* moment, not
 afterwords.

As a first aid method I asked my friend to contact mr. Ville Lamminen,
who is working for the Finnish local dealer for JAWS at
http://www.aviris.fi/, and as a second aid method I'll send this mail to
that list, because I've *never* been in a situation like that particular
 one before.

My question after the description above is simply: Should a compability
problem with the display adapter cause a situation like this? Shouldn't
the system start anyway, and shouldn't JAWS still be able to speak and
 inform about the compatibility problem?

 Yours sincerely,

2007-10-08 Thread Kelly Ford
Office 2007 will work with documents created in Office 2003. They open in
what's known as compatibility mode.

The biggest learning curve in Office 2007 from my experience is what's known
as the ribbon. There are many different online resources that talk about
this but one thing I find particularly handy are some references from the
office team that tell you where all the commands you are used to can now be
found. I linked to these in a blog post a while ago at
http://blog.kellyford.org/archives/2007/01/finding_the_ele.html.
