Not using Vista but XP Pro and now that you mention it I am noticing a
longer time for JAWS to load. It seemed longer from the last Beta version
to the final release. I'm going to wait to get my CD, uninstall 9 and all
updates and start fresh to see what happens.

Hi all,
Has anyone noticed inconsistencies in how long it takes for JAWS to start at
either the log on screen and/or the Windows desktop? I've noticed that
sometimes it loads very quickly at log on yet it takes half a minute to a
minute for it to reload at the main desktop, and at other times it could be
the complete opposite. I'm using the final release of JAWS 9 and Vista Home
Premium. Thanks in advance.

 Dale,

Correct. Eloq.sbl isn't opened in a manager, you can use Notepad. I
think it started with JAWS 5, but help on it doesn't appear until
version 6 (look under Using JAWS, Voice settings, for a topic called
 Adding Speech for special symbols).

Your post reminded me that Freedom Scientific have a bulletin on this
topic which allows you to download a much expanded eloq.sbl with entries
for most Unicode symbols. Here is a link to the bulletin:
 http://www.freedomscientific.com/fs_support/BulletinView.cfm?QC=1066

Each synthesiser has its own sbl file, but if you use anything other
than eloquence, it's a bit more tricky in that additions will need to be
 done manually.

Using XP and JAWS 9, replying directly to sender works for me by pressing

As the subject line states I can not reply directly to sender using the

 doing it that way.

I am going to check this out for myself, it's just that I haven't recorded

I am still having issues with Jaws 9 and GoldWave both with and without the
scripts. I frequently hear my Windows default sound as I record and play
files. Is anyone else experiencing this? It doesn't happen with Jaws 8.
Thanks.

Hi,

I want to copy some cassette tapes to my computer. I know that I need a
cord to plug the cassette player into the mic jack on my computer and that I
need some recording software. What recommendations do you have for software
that likes Jaws and does a good job with the recording?

Thanks,

[JAWS-Users] Word doc and Text boxes

2007-11-22 Thread Scott Meyer
Hi
 Happy Thanksgiving!
A friend is using text boxes in his word documents so he does not have to
worry about wrap around.Problem is I can only read the first line. using Jaws
8. Is their a work around for this.If the document it's short enough I can use
the PC cursor but that stops me from making any corrections.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 9 curiosity

2007-11-22 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Well, I had a thought. I've heard once that Vista learns what programmes you
use the most, and puts it as high priority, or something like that. Anyway,
I'm now starting to notice JAWS 9 loading as soon as the Vista startup sound
is played, as well as shortly after I log in with my password-enabled
account. Hmm, interesting!

 Chris

Not using Vista but XP Pro and now that you mention it I am noticing a
longer time for JAWS to load. It seemed longer from the last Beta version
to the final release. I'm going to wait to get my CD, uninstall 9 and all
updates and start fresh to see what happens.

 Hi all,
Has anyone noticed inconsistencies in how long it takes for JAWS to start
 at
either the log on screen and/or the Windows desktop? I've noticed that
sometimes it loads very quickly at log on yet it takes half a minute to a
minute for it to reload at the main desktop, and at other times it could
 be
the complete opposite. I'm using the final release of JAWS 9 and Vista
 Home
 Premium. Thanks in advance.

[JAWS-Users] the line-in jack was Re: Recording Software

2007-11-22 Thread Tony Hernandez
HI Ralph.

I second that advice from Leonard. If you use the Microphone jack for a
thing like that, it will come out sounding irritatingly distorted. Use the
line-in plug if you have one. Do a test recording to make sure your levels
are exceptable from the cassette player as well as in the line-in recording
volume on the computer.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Keystroke Question

Hi Folks,

A friend of mine is using the latest build of Jaws 8, and asked me what the
say all toggle was.

As it is insert+S on my computer using Jaws 7, I told her as much, however
it is not working for her.

I'm assuming that the keystroke has changed since Jaws 7, so does anyone
know what the keystroke is for the say all toggle?

I believe I am calling it by it's correct name.

Basically, what is supposed to happen when one presses insert+S, Jaws
reports all, highlighted or none, however Jaws is not doing that on her
computer using the latest 8 build.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I have another question which I'll be posing in another message to follow
regarding that same friend.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws Keystroke Question

2007-11-22 Thread Ryan MacIsaac
Hi,

The keystroke is still the Jaws key plus S and it still works the way you
described. The only reason I can think of why this did not work for your
friend is that keystroke was changed in the keyboard manager.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws Acting Like an Alarm Clock

2007-11-22 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Folks,

As I stated in my last message, this is another question my friend also
posed me.

Basically, Jaws is telling her the time every minute or so, as though it's
speaking every time the clock on the screen changes.

This happens on all her programs, and even on the desktop when it has focus.

Is Jaws supposed to be doing that?

Is this something that Jaws 8 has incorporated into it's programming?

Any help would be appreciated, on how to stop this annoying function.

Hi Victor,

I wander if JAWS is set to say all under screen echo.

I usually set JAWS to say highlighted text, but when I set JAWS to say all,

To change the screen echo temporary, use Insert+S, and you will have 3

2007-11-22 Thread Jerry Berrier
An attenuator cord can look just like a regular patch cord, but it has a
component in it that decreases the level of the signal that is transmitted
through it. It's used when the device you're sending the signal to needs a
lower level than is being output by the other device.

That won't fix the problem because Java and JavaScript aren't the same
thing. It's a common mistake to make because the names are similar. See:

Re: [JAWS-Users] DVD controls

2007-11-22 Thread Chris Hallsworth
Hi, your DVD player has nothing to do with JAWS; they're two separate
programmes, even though they're running together. Not sure about your
keyboard query, but just want to reassure you it's not JAWS whose to blame.
Hope that helps.

 Hi everyone:
  I have 8.0 and XP.
I am not having any luck using the keyboard controls in managing a DVD.
Would the key commands have changed from 6.0 to 8.0?
The stop, start, and eject work, but I can not seem to jump from one
 chapter
to another using the alt. control T, or N commands
The chapter keeps repeating itself no matter what I do.

 Thanks for any help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Word doc and Text boxes

2007-11-22 Thread Dale Leavens
There may be something I only have a vague memory but it has something to do
with the properties of a text box. I think when it is created there is a
setting to permit editing which must be enabled for Jaws to be able to navigate
within it but I don't remember for sure. I wonder too if you can get it to work
by enabling forms mode, that is just a wild guess.

Hi Ming.

Unfortunately, JAWS 8 and higher no longer has that feature. It sure would
be pretty handy to have that, but FS decided for what I'm sure are good
reasons not to continue support for that. Since our resident FS employee is
on this list, I for one would like to put the bug in your ear, Mr. Damery,
about how much I like that feature and wish it were back with the current
versions of JAWS. :)

Re: [JAWS-Users] Interesting use for the Select and copyusingon-screen highlight feature

2007-11-22 Thread Dale Leavens
Is that a new feature? I seem to remember highlighting bits of Web pages for
years as part of the copy function when lifting passages or other information
to move into another document or e-mail message. Maybe since Jaws 2.0 .

I had never thought of it as a way to attract attention to my location for
sighted folk but will in future.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Interesting use for the Select and copy
 usingon-screen highlight feature

 Hello All,

Incidentally, this is my first post to the list; I've just joined and am
really looking forward to taking advantage of the wealth of resources
 about
JAWS that seem to be here.

I'm often looking at websites with other sighted people, and have found it
somewhat frustrating in the past to show the other person where I am
 located
on the web page. This could seem quite insignificant, but believe
 me--when
you are on a very long catalogue, study guide or database, it can be
 crutial
to know where the other is on the page, so that you can be examining the
same pieces of information. Well, with JAWS 9.0, all that is necessary is
for me to highlight a few words on the line I'm sitting on with a command
like CTRL+SHIFT+RIGHT ARROW. Since JAWS can now track the highlighting
visually on-screen, I find that this is a terrific reference marker for a
sighted person to see, and almost feel that this should be added to the
documentation as an interesting use of the on-screen highlight tracking
 feature.

So, after using JAWS 9.0 for a couple of months now, I just couldn't ever
 go
 back!

 Cheers,

 Grant

[JAWS-Users] Something wrong with Office 2000.

2007-11-22 Thread Dale Leavens
There seems to be something wrong with my instal of Office 2000 although I have
just run a repair it still isn't doing some things I think it should.

1) I can't get the Office Help to work. I do get that screen about ways to get
assistance while you work but even that is not working right. My sighted
assistant can't see it, it is as though it is minimized, it shows up in the
task tray. The virtual cursor will read it but the Jaws cursor only says blank
blank. I cannot get that question function where you type in a question and
Office finds a series of matches.

2) Perhaps less disturbing but I cannot get the Office sounds to work. I rather
like the reinforcement noises when you delete something or when you reverse or
undo changes, or the save function. It is selected in the Options but it don't
seem to work.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

 Hi Patty,
 When sitting on a webpage:
 1. Do an alt T.
 2. Arrow to options.
 3. Press enter.
 4. control tab to advanced.
 5. press J.
 6. You should land on Java.
 7. arrow down and see if Java is turned on or off.
 8. If it is turned off you will need to turn it on but I can't recall if
 you
press enter or space bar or something else.
You may need to restart your browser and perhaps your system to make the
 new
 setting take affect.
This should fix the trouble. I have had to do this on mine a few times

It sounds to me like you have JAWS set to speak all.

To change this, pres insert on the numpad and s and it will cycle through
all, some and highlighted. See if that makes a difference. It should be
 on
 highlighted.

 Hi Folks,

As I stated in my last message, this is another question my friend also
 posed me.

Basically, Jaws is telling her the time every minute or so, as though it's
speaking every time the clock on the screen changes.

This happens on all her programs, and even on the desktop when it has
 focus.

Is Jaws supposed to be doing that?

Is this something that Jaws 8 has incorporated into it's programming?

Any help would be appreciated, on how to stop this annoying function.

 Victor

An attenuator cord can look just like a regular patch cord, but it has a
component in it that decreases the level of the signal that is transmitted
through it. It's used when the device you're sending the signal to needs a
lower level than is being output by the other device.

What is an atenuated patch cord ? I have a cord that has a jack on each
end. These jacks fit the recorder headphone jack and the mic jack on my
laptop.

You might be able to use the mic jack for input if you use an atenuated
patch cord.

I was planning to use the line out on my cassette player. If I use my
laptop, the only option I know of is the mic jack. Another ooption is to use
my wife's desktop computer. Is that what I need to do?

I ALSO RECOMMEND GOLDWAVE, BUT I WOULDN'T CONNECT TO THE MIC JACK, YOUR
SYSTEM SHOULD HAVE A LINE-IN JACK THAT WOULD BETTER TO USE SINCE YOU WILL
PROBABLY BE USING A LINE-OUT FEATURE OF YOUR CASSETTE PLAYER.

Hi,

I want to copy some cassette tapes to my computer. I know that I need

software
that likes Jaws and does a good job with the recording?

Thanks,

2007-11-22 Thread Tony Hernandez
