Re: [JAWS-Users] OCR software

2008-02-24 Thread Chris & Doris
You should be able to set Open Book to use your DECTAlk for reading
and I believe you also should be aable to turn off OB's self-voicing
altogether. OB has a standard windows interface so you'd not have any
trouble at all navigating it with jaws.

I do not know about the U.S., but here in Europe older packages of
software are often sold at much reduced prices thru some mail order outfits.

You might want to google for "omnipage 15" and see if you come up
with places selling it still.

2008-02-24 Thread Chris & Doris
Depending on your needs, the diferent products from

http://65.200.22.182/training/index.htm

might also be an option. Text Cloner is a stand-alone ocr that will
work with an existing screenreader to read documents While
ScanAndRead and the Complete Reading Systems can be used in a
self-voicing mode.

These packages are made with the blind and low-vision user in mind
but come at a much lower price than OB or K1k.

[JAWS-Users] list guidelines read them this time if you do not know what they say

2008-02-24 Thread David Ferrin
About JAWS-Users-List English (USA)

Hello and welcome to the JAWS Users list. This list has been created for The
purpose of discussing all aspects of the JAWS for Windows screen reader
Program.

So everything that pertains to JAWS is fair game. Such as asking about what
software packages work well with JAWS or how to make them work even better with
scripts, keyboard short cuts and so forth. Another example could be requesting
information on how to do something in Microsoft Word, which as we all know
works very well with JAWS, but you need to know how to do a certain task or
want to learn a way to accomplish it more efficiently.

Now this is a very important point in my opinion, asking the list for exact
instructions every time is not a good thing to do for a major reason. It
creates a dependency situation even if you don't realize it does. The ideal
place I am hoping the list will arrive at some day is that everybody no matter
how new they might happen to be with JAWS or computers will have the confidence
to try things on their own, and yet feel if they get stuck the list will be
there to help put them back on track. Trust me when I say that help is quicker
to arrive for somebody who is well known to ask for it last than first. So try
it yourself first what ever it might happen to be. If you get stuck then let
the list know what you've done to try and resolve your current dilemma. Then
I'm sure help will arrive with in short order. Next a post asking if there is a
software package that does a specific task and works well with JAWS is
perfectly fine.

The rules of conduct are quite simple and straightforward. Be polite and
Patient with others. There will be absolutely no fighting, and no bashing of
Freedom Scientific on here at all. If you have a problem with them then I
suggest you take it up with Freedom Scientific directly.

Please try to keep subject lines relevant and descriptive as possible. Also any
news letters except those that directly pertain to JAWS should not be posted to
the list prior to receiving moderator approval.

Attachments are removed before any message is sent to the list. This is done
for your protection. The message list might state that there is an attachment
but in fact Mailman does remove them.

When contacting any of the list moderators privately please be descriptive in
the subject line as to the purpose of the message. Many of us simply delete
messages from people we don't know. At the present time there are over 200
subscribers to this list, so we can't possibly know everybody on here.

Also, if you have a question for the list that falls within the guidelines,
then post it accordingly. Don't contact the management team with questions that
are more appropriate for the list itself. Your question may or may not receive
an answer for a number of reasons.

Everybody should familiarize themselves with the content contained in the
footer message that accompanies every message posted to the list. There you
will find the group web address along with some other relevant information
pertaining to contacting the management team ETC. It is very frustrating to
read a post asking for the group web address when the very next line states
visit the JAWS Users List home page and the next line after that is the URL.

Occasionally there might be some difficulty with your email address and you may
receive an email from the Mailman program asking you to reactivate your
account. Please do not simply delete this message. Instead open it and follow
the directions to reactivate your account. If you do not after receiving a
number of such messages then we will figure that you no longer wish to be a
member of the list and remove your email address.

The discussion of anything illegal is absolutely forbidden, along with flirting
or other such inappropriate activities. this is not a high tech swap shop or
anything of that nature at all. This means that goods and or services will not
be bought or sold using this forum. If you know a given subject is off topic
then don't post it. Simply placing off topic in the subject line does not make
it all right. Cross-posting is not permitted, and members should only post in
the following manner:

Using the TO: field with only one list address. The SUBJECT: field should be
short and to the point without including any member names.

The reason for this is that in cases where people setup their message rules to
go by the To: field often times such rules get fowled up and in effect do not
work properly. Also cross posting might allow you to reach many lists at the
same time but the fact is such a post might not be on topic for each and every
list. This practice does nothing but clutter up such lists with

unwanted off topic messages along with annoying the list moderators. Lastly
please no jokes, virus warnings, recipes, safety tips, or pleas to help dying
kids, should e

Well this is all very interesting to somebody I'm sure, the fact is it isn't
interesting to me. Also I must point out that it isn't on topic for this

now. This means that this is the last message on this particular issue I
wish to see.

 Excuse me.

86% of blind adults unemployed in the U.S. (best as I can
 figure..tough statistic to find).

Don't know about the rest of you, but with JAWS SMA fees, paying for
the latest JAWS because I don't have an SMA yet... then add $600.00
for either Open Book or Kurzweil

Excuse me... but what banks are y'all robbing to get this kind of cash?

Sorry to sound disgruntled...and I'm sure this will be flagged as

family could not reasonably be expected to shell out that kind of jing.

It is really bad that the sighted people got the authority over what we put

2008-02-24 Thread Wes Derby
Nope...You will need a sighted person to read the captcha code required
before you can uninstall anything. In my case, I had to have it read
twice...Once to uninstall GoBack, once to uninstall the rest of my Norton
products.

Hi folks,

How does any of this relate to the best and most effective OCR software to
utilize with JFW 8.latest, Windows-XP-Pro and Office XP?

 Excuse me.

86% of blind adults unemployed in the U.S. (best as I can
 figure..tough statistic to find).

Don't know about the rest of you, but with JAWS SMA fees, paying
for the latest JAWS because I don't have an SMA yet... then add
$600.00 for either Open Book or Kurzweil

Excuse me... but what banks are y'all robbing to get this kind of
 cash?

Sorry to sound disgruntled...and I'm sure this will be flagged as
off-topic, but come on! Even somebody earning $75K/year with a
small family could not reasonably be expected to shell out that
 kind of jing.

Re: [JAWS-Users] OCR Software

2008-02-24 Thread Angel238
Even if that hadn't have been the case, and it wasn't when I purchased for
myself openbook 1 in 96, I believe it was, I would have gotten the money
somehow. It amazes me sighted people, even poor ones, find the money to
purchase mandatory automobile insurance. They do so, and drive, even when
there is a fairly fine public transportation system available to them.
There are those of us blind who feel just because they may be on fixed
incomes they can't find a way to purchase screen readers or scanning
recognition programs. The argument that screen readers are out of reach of
the average person has become even more ineffective when there are free
alternatives out there and lese to own opportunities as well. If one were
to diligently save for about 1000 dollars, perhaps 1200 dollars a computer,
plus an off the shelf scanning recognition software can be purchased. Add
to this a free screen reader and one is good to go. It seems the only
reason people are complaining is because they object to the cost of freedom
Scientifics' products. Even at that, if a freedom scientific product is
desired one could always purchase connect outloud till enough money could be
saved to purchase Jaws itself.

Arianna,

Nuance sells it. You could try their website to see if version 15 is still
available. If not call them and explain an maybe they would sell you a old
version. Here's the website:

www.nuance.com

Let me know how you make out

I have never used open book but I hear from others it works well. My
personal experience with Kurzweil is that it does very well. While nothing
is perfect version 11.1 is considerably improved over earlier versions.
Either one should serve you well.I have used Kurzweil to read mail,
instructions from frozen food boxes, and hundreds of typed or printed
correspondence snail mail with relatively good results.

Personally, I use Readiris Pro 11 for scanning my documents It does a
wonderful job for me. It is JAWS friendly with the exception that you are
not able to edit the document with in the program. Honestly I prefer to edit
my documents in MS Word so this isn't even a real issue.

Re: [JAWS-Users] OCR Software

2008-02-24 Thread Angel238
I am self employed. I have always been able to purchase sma's for both Jaws
and open book. My adaptive equipment was purchased by my state
rehabilitation services in 97. Then a hardware synthesizer had to be
purchased as well, amounting to 1200 dollars above the cost of the adaptive
software. The sma's only cost 100 dollars every two or so years. If one
saves 20 dollars a month for that length of time sufficient money can be
saved . I don't think this is to much to save considering the unnecessary
items each of us purchase because we are human and have wants as well as
having needs.

Is it? I wasn't aware of that. I have a visually impaired person who uses it

I don't know. I know more about Open Book than anything else. I had to teach
someone how to use it once. The rest of them, someone else will have to tell
you of because I don't know anything about them.

Ok, I am already aware of "Both of the major packages..." but I have always
thought of those two as scanning packages with OCR software included. I
thought (evidently erroneously) that we were talking about "stand-alone" OCR
software.

What about Omnipage pro, and Fine Reader? Scanning + OCR or just OCR?

Thanks,

Bob

Kurzwiel and openbook.

There's also Omnipage pro, and Fine Reader, which someone above just
mentioned. Kurzwiel is now up to version 3000. Also known as K3K. ::smiles::

Both of the major packages are self voicing and as a result have no need for
a screen reader. I do not know a great deal about the other titles
available.

Re: [JAWS-Users] OCR Software

2008-02-24 Thread Bob J.

Thanks,

Bob

I have never used open book but I hear from others it works well. My
personal experience with Kurzweil is that it does very well. While nothing
is perfect version 11.1 is considerably improved over earlier versions.
Either one should serve you well.I have used Kurzweil to read mail,
instructions from frozen food boxes, and hundreds of typed or printed
correspondence snail mail with relatively good results.

I have been using a product called Text Cloner Pro for severayl years and it
does very well for the price. It costs $100 and is designed for use with
screen readers. You can get information on it at:
http://www.readingmadeez.com/products/TextClonerPro.html
I think you can still download a 30 day trial so you can try it before you
buy.

Hope this helps,
Russ

Hi,

I don't think there's a way to do that at the moment. however, you
could use a sapi wav generation program and tell jaws to play these
files when it encounters the word.

If anybody is interested and assuming I don't get bombarded by doctor's
appointments and tech calls this week I am planning on working on a recording
for this program. It was on my schedule for last week, but that went down the
drain real quick. I just wanted to announce that I was still planning on doing
it is all. We now return you to your regularly scheduled program already in
progress.

[JAWS-Users] JAWS dictionary question

2008-02-24 Thread torgersonenator
Hi
I enjoy several of the SAPI 5 voices. I would like to use Eloquence for my
main reading and SAPI for words I have modified with the dictionary manager. Is
there a way to do this?

God bless?

Re: [JAWS-Users] OCR Software

2008-02-24 Thread Paul Shallbetter

Sorry to sound disgruntled...and I'm sure this will be flagged as
off-topic, but come on! Even somebody earning $75K/year with a small
family could not reasonably be expected to shell out that kind of jing.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Norton Removal Tool

2008-02-24 Thread Brent Harding
I heard that somewhere too. I don't know how they'd put audio in to that
because it's a software program and not a web site. I wonder if this site,
actually called pc-decrapifier.com will take care of Norton, considering
that the person who originally posted wanted the 30-day thing removed from a
new machine. I don't know if that program is accessible or not as I never
tried it, but I heard about it on Leo Laport's tech guy show to be used to
clean up new machines of a lot of that stuff they come with that many people
don't even want.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Bobby.

2008-02-24 Thread Max Robinson
Got it. Here, for the benefit of others, is what I had to do to make it
work. I copied and pasted the URL but it still had a carriage return in the
middle. I opened a new email message and pasted the broken URL into the
blank message. Then, I was able to remove the carriage return and get it
all on a single line. Then I selected that, copied and pasted it into the
browser and the page came up. Hope this helps someone.

Regards.

[JAWS-Users] OCR software

2008-02-24 Thread Mike Wagoner
I have never used open book but I hear from others it works well. My personal
experience with Kurzweil is that it does very well. While nothing is perfect
version 11.1 is considerably improved over earlier versions. Either one should
serve you well.I have used Kurzweil to read mail, instructions from frozen food
boxes, and hundreds of typed or printed correspondence snail mail with
relatively good results.

I could be mistaken, but I believe he was referring to OpenBook & Kurzweil

Both of the major packages are self voicing and as a result have no need for
a screen reader. I do not know a great deal about the other titles

Jimmy,
What I have to do when I encounter that kind of message is to press my alt
key, find my message tab , tab to, other action submenu and press my
spacebar.
Arrow down to, view in browser and press enter.
I haven't found another way of reading that type of message, but hopefully

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws not reading some emails or web pages.

Hello all. I'm using jaws 9, vista home premium, IE7 and outlook 2007. I
am having a problem on my aser lap top where some web pages, such as the
kccomm page won't read. I can't send the kccomm link because I can't get
aws to copy the address from the address bar. But here's what happens. The
page loads and it reads the title of the page and the links, however, it
won't read the body of the message.

I was doing the publishers clearing house thing and now that I'm in outlook
2007 it will not read the contents of the message. Now if I go to Jaws
cursor mode, I can read the contents of the emails. I got an email from
ASER this morning and it does the same thing. I'm not sure what's going on
here, anybody have any ideas?

Re: [JAWS-Users] OCR Software

2008-02-24 Thread Chris & Doris
My happy bias is with Abbyy Finereader Pro though I understand that
version 9.0 while giving great ocr result is not suite as
screenreader friendly as previous versions.

The price for FR 9.0 is about Euro 150.00, which would make it very
roughly about US$225.00 given the current exchange rate.

If you have used MOmnipage befoer, this is said to give good
accessible recognition also.

If you have office xp or higher, it comes with some basic and
accessible ocr built into it that gives surprisingly good ocr
results. If you do not want to scan whole encyclopedias every day,
you might want to try if what comes with office is not enough for your needs.

Finally, several of my friends have k1k11 and love it but unless
you're untitled to upgrade from a previous version, I just find it
too expensive to justify.
Just my twoEuro cents worth. g>

Cheers,

Doris

Jimmy,
What I have to do when I encounter that kind of message is to press my alt

Arrow down to, view in browser and press enter.
I haven't found another way of reading that type of message, but hopefully
somebody else will have a better suggestion.

Re: [JAWS-Users] I Hate Vista

2008-02-24 Thread Jimmy Podsim
I'll say it's not vista causing that, but something in jaws. Have you tried
going into control panel and changing your start menu to classic style? ?
You can do this in control panel, and taskbar options.

Hello List,

I was using my new laptop tonight with the dreadful vista when all of a
sudden it has stopped reading the start menu.
And any other list for that matter.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks loads

Re: [JAWS-Users] outlook XP auto complete

2008-02-24 Thread Ryan MacIsaac
Hi,

The instructions I gave were for Outlook 2002 (or Outlook XP) which is what
I thought you referred to in your e-mail message subject. The instructions
will work for Outlook 2002 and above.

In Outlook 2000, the suggest name feature will only check against names that
you have stored in your contacts. Unlike Outlook 2002 and above, it will not
check against names that you have previously typed in the "to" or "CC"
fields.

Dear Ryan and Denny

I have checked the tools menu as per your suggestion; the auto name checking
is checked, but there is no "suggest names while completing" option; is this
for the 2007 version of Outlook only? I use Outlook 9 with Office 2000.
Perhaps it's time to upgrade???
Thanks,
Samira

I just saw in your subject line that you are using Outlook XP. Not sure if
it will be the in Outlook 2003, but try this.
Go to tools and then options.
The first tab will be, preferences, tab to, email options.
Tab to, advanced email options and press your spacebar.
Tab to,Automatic Name checking and Suggest names while completing, and make
sure they are both checked. Tab to OK and then to OK and once again to
OK.

Are you using Outlook or Outlook Express?
Also, did you turn the address auto completion on in Jaws? Insert v and
arrow down to, address auto completion.

I switched from Eudora to Outlook and I am trying to get Outlook to
automatically complete the recipient name as I used to do in Eudora. How can
I set it to do this? I went over all the options in the tools menu but could
not find a radio button for autocomplete. In Eudora, once you enter a
recipient into the address book, Eudora complete the address as soon as you
type the initial letter.
Thanks for any help.

Well, I will try it again. I think what happened is that when I copied the
link, I had Jaws set to copy from the virtual PC cursor instead of the full
content.
The link address is correct, but you might have to select and copy it into
your browser in order to get the full address.
