[JAWS-Users] Trouble With New Netbook and JAWS
I recently purchased a new netbook. It is an Acer Aspire One. It has JAWS 8 with Windows XP Home installed on it. I tried to download several files this evening and neither the Applications key nor the right mouse button would work properly. Instead of displaying the option to download a file, it would merely allow you to save the web page and not the file being linked to. I had my dad, who is sighted, use the touch-screen mouse pad and download several files. He was able to do it without problems. Every time I used the arrow keys, pressing the Applications key or the right mouse button only resulted in pulling down a menu to change the background display. Are there certain netbooks that JAWS does not interface well with? Any help would be appreciated. T. H. I use Facebook every day and dislike the mobile site. I am mainly interested in locating the posts my friends make each day and the regular home page offers the easiest navigation since using h for heading takes me right down through all the posts. If the post is a comment it reads it immediately. If it says just the friend's name then it is usually some application game or photo link that I ignore. So I can zip through the postings by using the h. Usually this list is fairly short and does not include all the recent posts so I do a Jaws search for "older posts" and it shows more. I like to remember to do the older posts link first so i don't have to h through the ones I have just read. But it is so quick to jump through using the h that you can skim right over friends whose posts don't interest you particularly. In Jaws 11 there is also a hide link that appears after the person's name that will hide the current posts for that person. This is good for people who don't post status updates but only game stuff. and other things uninteresting to me This heading navigation does not work to locate posts on the mobile page and I find myself having to arrow down line by line. And it does not include the total list of posts, I think. Another benefit to the regular home page is that there are several other choices for how to view the posts. I usually just use jaws search to locate the following links: News feed is the first one and the default I think. It has many posts that Facebook deems most important. But I want them all so I use some of the other links as well. Under the News feed link is a link with the name of my current city, Elizabethton, TN. When I click on this one I can see all of my own recent updates and wall to wall posts. This is handy since I am not always sure if something I have attempted has actually been posted and this link posts them promptly. So if it doesn't show up here I go back and do it again. The next link is Pages. This allows you to see only posts from groups or people you are a fan of. I can get all the back posts for my Hungry Girl, Kim Komando, Never Say Diet, etc. The next choice is Status updates. This is a really good list since it only includes the actual updates friends have written and not the who friended who or played such and such in Farmville or whatever. There is also a choice for Live feed and I think this includes all posts without the Facebook choosing what is important. That is my guess, anyway since this list is longer. I locate these lists by using Jaws search. I don't worry about notifications and such too much since messages to my inbox, friend requests and comments on my posts are emailed to my regular email and I find them there. Every now and then I check the notifications area to see who sent me "gifts" I can't see and usually ignore these. I try to avoid most Facebook apps now that there are some virus problems there according to Kim Komando, the digital goddess. By using the h for heading navigation I find that I skip right over the pesky adds which appear on the home page and skipping them is a blessing. I have also put desktop shortcuts for Facebook home, for my profile page and for the mobile page so I can switch back and forth very easily by using windows d to go to the desktop and f to find which Facebook page I want to open next. I hope this helps by adding another option different from the popular opinion on the list which seems to be that the mobile Facebook is the only way to go. Re: [JAWS-Users] Question on what are mp3ufiles.
Hello David. Thank you for responding, and for the explenation that you provided regarding m3u files, and how I might go about resolving this issue. Now I need to ask, where can I get this program that you referenced called, m3u tag program? - Original Message - From: "David Griffith" To: Sent: Tuesday, December 01, 2009 10:59 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Question on what are mp3ufiles. I think you must mean m3u files. If you do mean m3u files then these are playlist files. They are actually plain text files with a list of media filenames which tell your media player which files you want to play consecutively. Typically you would use an m3u file to tell a player to play all the music tracks of an album in the correct order. Or you can create your own custom m3u files. It looks like, in this case, there is an error and there is a reference in the m3u file to a mp3 file that has been moved or deleted. You could manually edit the m3u file in notepad to rectify this problem. This might be tricky if you do not know much about the file layout requirement. It might be simpler to remove this m3u file and recreate it . I use Media Player Classic as my media player but use an excellent small program called Mp3Tag to manage m3u files. For example to create a m3u playlist of files in a folder simply open the program press control D, point to the folder you want and then press control P , then enter and that is it. If you go back to the folder in Explorer you will find a file called mp3tag.m3u which will do the job. You can of course rename the first part of the filename but keep the .m3u extension. I'm asking because I downloaded and unzipped Gene Asner's internet tutorial, and there are some files in there that are called mp3u files that I can't open using windows media player senter 10, with jaws 11 and windows xp home addition. When I try opening them, it says something about pointing too a file which has been moved or something too that affect. Re: [JAWS-Users] making a back up immige of your pc using jaws 7.0
The reason there are not any programs on the server to make an image of your computer is because they happen to be pay programs and not free. Also they are regularly updated and I can't possibly keep up with such things as this is a big operation some days. Re: [JAWS-Users] winamp and jaws
Hello, It also works to, when in the windows listview folder of the relevant book or album, , select all the files with control a and then, via the applications menu, choose, "Play in winamp," and when entering on that, it starts to play the audio files from the top, sequentially to the bottom and whilst playing, one can forward to the next track with b and to the previous track with z. I've found that moving to the bottom of the list and selecting using the shift and up arrow will make Winamp play the list from beginning to end. For example, I'm currently reading a book that has several CDs. Each file was divided into 12 or thirteen tracks, but all files are in the same folder. I have disc 1 Track 1, and the last file for the first CD is Disc 1 Track 13. To play that CD, I arrowed to Disc 1 Track 13, Pressed the shift key with the up arrow, and moved to Disc 1 Track one. Then I pressed Enter and Winamp began playing. I can then fast forward or rewind by track or use the left and right arrow to move five seconds backward or forward. This also works in music folders. Re: [JAWS-Users] making a back up image of your pc using jaws 7.0
Mitch, If you are looking for accomplishing what you want independently with JAWS, I would suggest the program entitled Image for Windows. David has a tutorial on the JAWS Users group page you may want to listen to and then decide. You can also download the program from the vendor's website and have a 30 day free trial to decide for yourself. Try selecting all of the parts by doing a control a. Also be sure your shuffle is turned off. - Original Message - From: "Holger Fiallo" To: Sent: Tuesday, December 01, 2009 8:59 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] winamp and jaws Hi, all I am trying to read an audio book which has several parts and using down arrow and shift and press enter so winamp comes and start reading but tends to read from middle or the end of what I select but not from beginning.
