Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel problems with Jaws

2010-04-06 Thread Donald Marang
Perhaps the font size on the screen is too small for JAWS to read correctly.
I would check the zoom level by pressing F6 until you get to the status bar.
Then Tab until you get to the zoom button and press Enter. I would think a
good mix of the actual font size and magnification level would allow JAWS to
read the cells. Press Insert + F, to determine the font size used in a
pparticular cell.

A partial solution is to use goto for selecting text. Either f5 or
control-g gives you the go to dialog box. Then enter what you want to
select. For example if you want to select rows 1 through ten, you would
type f5, then 1:10. You can select contiguous cells, joining them with
colon as above, or non-contiguous cells, joining them with comma.

I would have thought that unloading and reloading JAWS would straighten
things out when you're trying to read, though. Excel is hard for JAWS,
being so densely formatted, but usually unload/reload unscrambles it.

Good luck!

[JAWS-Users] weird jaws 11 superscript and subscript issue

2010-04-06 Thread Dickson Tan
Hi All

When in word, I went to the jaws config manager and under speech and sounds
manager, enabled the speaking of the supscript and superscript attribute and
thereafter jaws automatically saved the modified scheme as word classic
(modified). For a while, this option worked fine but ever since a few days
ago, jaws wasn't announcing those sub and superscripts as it should have.
I've double-checked that the appropriate options are selected. What's going
on with jaws?

For a long time now, JAWS will stumble over a single syllable in a line.

Which kind of old Braille display?

I have hooked up my old Braille Lite as a display using a usb-to-serial
converter just for jollies. I assume when you refer to a USB adapter, that
is what you are referencing. You need to go into the USB-to-Serial
converter port settings which you would find under your system, device
manager, ports settings and make sure they match the serial communications
parameters on your Braille display.

But, I haven't tried it on a Windows 7 PC.

2010-04-06 Thread Scorpio Forever
I also had this problem, and even posted the same question not too long ago,
and don't think I ever got a reply back then, but it seems to be a recurring
problem.

I didn't manage to fix it, and it will occasionally come back, however, it
seems that the problem did decline on it's own without my doing a thing.

I do believe this may be a software issue though Lenny, because the computer
I had the problem on did not go through any hardware modifications, nor did
I do anything different in terms of installing new software, so it looks to
be a Jaws or Windows problem.

for what it's worth, it seems to be only happening on XP machines.

Not with the accessible player. However, one can do it with the other media
player. Unfortunately you need a sighted person to tell you which numbered
buttons are fast forward and rewind. Once you know that, they don't change.

Major League Baseball (MLB) has really improved accessibility for screen
reader users. It's nice to be able to increase and/or decrease the volume
of a game easily. But, I would like to know is there away to
rewind/forward while listening to a game that has been completed and is
now an archive stream?

Those forward/rewind buttons are flash movies or whatever it's called I
believe. Think they can be label? Surely wish so. As for the volume thing
that's easier. You just arrow down until you get to the the link that says
increase volume and keep hitting enter on that link. Right above that link
it should tell you the volume level. The default is 50. Do the same to
decrease volume by entering on that specific link.

I am running jaws11, windows 7, and office 7 on an HP Pavilion laptop. I
have an old Braille display which now connects to my old computer with a

Since the laptop does not have a serial port, I bought a usb 9 pin male
adapter hoping to get my Braille display, a powerbraille 40 to work with
my

new laptop.

It will not work. JAWS tech support seemed clueless.

Is there a work-around? or will I have to run this laptop without a

You can get Skype 4.2 from www.skype.com/go/getskype. You can get the
scripts on the home page at www.dlee.org/skype. Unless you have a 64 bit
operating system there is no reason to use the executable, otherwise use

Donny, go to the MLB lite player. and there you see a button called volume.
Don't hit enter on it, but arrow down to where it says, increase volume, and
hit enter. I think every time you hit enter on this button, it increases the
volume by 5%. See if that helps you. It has worked for me. Jim

challenging is that I know there is text that I just can't get Jaws to read
no matter what cursor I use. With the Jaws cursor, Jaws will read parts of
several lines but won't move past a certain point. And then there is text
whichJaws will read when I do a say line, but when I try to read cell by
cell, I can't get a cursor to the last cell to check the numbers more
carefully, which I want to do because it's hard to keep all that info
straight in my mind.

Thanks, Shari

Sometimes, you need to refresh the screen also. In complex spreadsheets,
particularly if you are editing a lot, the screen gets cluttered and you
need to hit Ins plus Esc which redraws the screen and often clears up
these

kinds of problems.

Good luck!

2010-04-06 Thread Ann Byrne

Have you tried the read all visible cells with data command
(control-shift-d) or read all cells in the row (control-shift-r for
older JAWS and insert-shift-r for new ones) and read all cells in
the column (control-shift-c or insert-shift-c) do anything
good???Using control-shift-d, though, only reads the cells
visible on the screen, not all the cells. Insert-shift-r reads all
cells in the row whether they are on the screen or not, and likewise
insert-shift-c reads everything in a column whether it is on screen or not.

Hi Folks:

Ok, I just got off skipe with someone and we couldn't accomplish anything.

I have precluded that the during the skipe calls, the other

them talk but they cannot hear me talk.

I'm using skipe 4.1 using scrips 4.2 on a windows 7 machine using jaws 11.

I hope someone can help or provide more help seeing as I am out of

Those forward/rewind buttons are flash movies or whatever it's called I
believe. Think they can be label? Surely wish so. As for the volume thing
that's easier. You just arrow down until you get to the the link that says
increase volume and keep hitting enter on that link. Right above that link
it should tell you the volume level. The default is 50. Do the same to
decrease volume by entering on that specific link.

Not with the accessible player. However, one can do it with the other
media player. Unfortunately you need a sighted person to tell you which
numbered buttons are fast forward and rewind. Once you know that, they
don't change.

Major League Baseball (MLB) has really improved accessibility for screen
reader users. It's nice to be able to increase and/or decrease the
volume of a game easily. But, I would like to know is there away to
rewind/forward while listening to a game that has been completed and is
now an archive stream?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Skype talking

2010-04-06 Thread Holger Fiallo

   Here you go.
SkypeTalking
Version 0.7
Copyright (c)2010 Hrvoje KatiƦ
Project website: http://skypetalking.googlecode.com

1. Introduction

SkypeTalking is a utility that makes Skype, a popular Internet telephony
program more accessible and blind user friendly. It uses Skype API wrapper
and your screen reader speech and braille output for obtaining information
from Skype and sending that information to your screen reader. SkypeTalking
will announce most Skype alerts, including user's status changes, incoming
and outgoing chat messages, call statuses, and much more! In short,
SkypeTalking will simply make Skype talk to you!
SkypeTalking was primarily developed for NVDA, a free and open source screen
reader, to allow NVDA more access to Skype application. However, it will
also support JAWS, Window-Eyes, System Access and SAPI5 speech, though with
SAPI5 you will not have braille support.

1.1. System requirements

To use SkypeTalking successfully, you need the following:
* Windows 2000, XP, Vista or 7
* Any supported screen reader: Currently supported screen readers are NVDA
2010.1 Beta or later, JAWS (any version), Window-Eyes (any version) or
System Access (any version).
* If you don't use any of supported screen readers, a SAPI5 speech will be
used instead. In such case, you should have any SAPI5 compatible voices
(Windows systems come with at least one SAPI5 voice)
* And of course, Skype client application (3.x, 4.x or later) - will
probably work with Skype 2.x and possibly with 1.x, though not tested.

2. How to use

2.1. Installation and first run

To install SkypeTalking, launch SkypeTalking_setup.exe and follow the
instructions. The installation will create a desktop icon, a program group
in the start menu, and the installation folder found under x:\SkypeTalking
where x is your system drive letter.
To uninstall SkypeTalking, you can do this by opening SkypeTalking program
group in the start menu and choose Uninstall SkypeTalking.
To launch SkypeTalking, click SkypeTalking icon either from your desktop or
SkypeTalking entry in a start menu under programs\SkypeTalking.
When you launch SkypeTalking for the first time, it will be probably
unauthorized to communicate with Skype application. For security reasons,
Skype doesn't allow any 3rd-party plugins and extras to communicate with it
without user permission. This is to prevent viruses and trojans from
damaging Skype. To allow SkypeTalking's access to Skype, do the following:
1. Launch SkypeTalking, either from the desktop or from within the start
menu under ProgramsSkypeTalking. You should here Connecting to Skype.

2. Open Skype.
3. Go to menu bar, select tools, and then arrow up to options and press
Enter.

4. Arrow down to the Advanced category.
5. Press Shift+Tab repeatedly until you land on Manage other program's
access to Skype link. Press Spacebar to activate it.
6. Find SkypeTalking in a list (it should be usually a first item), tab to
Change button, and press Spacebar to activate it.
7. Press Tab. You should hear that you are positioned on a Radio Button that
says Do not allow this program access to Skype. Arrow up untill you hear
Allow this program access to Skype, and then press Enter.
8. Voila! You just allowed SkypeTalking to use Skype! SkypeTalking should
now say Success. You can now press Escape multiple times to exit options.
You even don't need to save them.
Note, you will have to repeat these steps each time when you reinstall
SkypeTalking, but don't worry, you have to do this only once per
SkypeTalking installation. You will also have to do this if changing
SkypeTalking.exe location.

2.2. How to use

Once launched, SkypeTalking will run in a background and read alerts aloud
until you close it.
SkypeTalking has keyboard shortcuts that you can use to control
SkypeTalking's behaviour and get any particular information repeated or
spoken. All SkypeTalking's keyboard shortcuts are in combination with Alt,
Ctrl and Shift keys (Alt+Ctrl+Shift+Something). Thus we can say that
Alt+Ctrl+Shift keys act as a SkypeTalking modifier. So to issue a commend,
you hold Alt+Ctrl+Shift (SkypeTalking Modifier), and press any other key
while holding it down.

2.3. Keyboard shortcuts

The following keyboard shortcuts are currently available in SkypeTalking:
Alt+Ctrl+Shift+A - Display About Dialog - This dialog shows the current
version of SkypeTalking, copyright information, web site information etc.
Alt+Ctrl+Shift+S - SkypeTalking Settings Dialog - Allows you to adjust
behavior of SkypeTalking, such as speech output, reading of alerts etc.

Alt+Ctrl+Shift+V - Speak currently running version of Skype and API wrapper
Alt+Ctrl+Shift+M - Repeat last chat message - Repeats last incoming or
outgoing chat message
Alt+Ctrl+Shift+E - Repeat last event - Repeats last Skype event including
chat messages.
Alt+Ctrl+Shift+I - Toggle ignoring of all Skype events. If turned on,
SkypeTalking will simply ignore events

Subject: [JAWS-Users] skipe

Hi Folks:

Ok, I just got off skipe with someone and we couldn't accomplish anything.

I have precluded that the during the skipe calls, the other
person can hear everything that I am doing and can hear my jaws, I can
hear

them talk but they cannot hear me talk.

I'm using skipe 4.1 using scrips 4.2 on a windows 7 machine using jaws 11.

I hope someone can help or provide more help seeing as I am out of
cigarettes and I am ready to blow my top!
