Yes, I had the demo directly from FS but, I didn't get the actual program
because of the expense of it.

It would be a little more for us Canadians because the import would be quite
expensive.

Did you get the demo directly from Freedom Scientific? I
notice on their site they do offer a demo. That is one
expensive piece of software ($995.00) Is the demo fully

Actually, Openbook does record Elequence onto MP3 formatted
files, if you
set it to record the text into either WAV or MP3, its your
choice.

I hope this helps, I had the program as a demo, that's how I

way to do this

and I don't know if it would work but...
Open .pdf file using scanning software.
I think scanning software like Openbook reads PDF files

better.

File is read using synthesized voice, eloquence, sappy...
You can then record the synthesized reading using a

digital recorder.

You now have a audio file on your recorder that you can

copy to your PC.

I know that you can go from speech to text using Dragon or

similar

software but don't know if there are other ways.

[JAWS-Users] Problem With JAWS Dictionary Manager

2010-04-14 Thread Gerald Levy

Greetings. Some time ago, I created entries in the JAWS 9 Dictionary Manager
for Outlook Express to replace the ">" symbol with a space. This seemed to
work, and the annoying ">" announcements in email messages were effectively
suppressed. However, for no apparent reason, JAWS has again started speaking
the ">" symbol in all my messages, even though I haven't changed anything in
the Dictionary Manager. How can I fix this problem?

Re: [JAWS-Users] converting pdf files to audio?

2010-04-14 Thread Ann M. Medlar

Hi Brian,
I think your link got broken in OE. I copied and pasted link to IE but
unsure where to play MP3 file. But that is unimportant because I listened
to it from your later link. I did have a copy of PDF conversion info in my
save email folder which is pasted below. It just adds another link for
conversion from PDF.

Ann
How To Convert PDF Files To Word Files For Free

Your best free option is to use an online conversion service. With these
services, you upload your PDF file, then download the converted file,or use
a personally owned program for converting.

I tried a number of these services, including one offered by Adobe, but in
the end I could only recommend two. Each, however, was excellent.

My first choice is ZamZar

http://www.zamzar.com/

This is an excellent general file conversion site, and PDF to DOC is one of
the many conversion options available.

Usage couldn't be simpler: just surf to the site, select your conversion
output type, point to the file you want uploaded for conversion and type in
your email address.

Some time later you will get an email with a download link for the converted
file.

For my 107KB test PDF file, the download email link came back to me within
one minute, which was pretty impressive, though I have heard that sometimes
you may have to wait for quite a while.

My test file is in multi-column format with breakout boxes in various font
styles and has embedded images. Converting this is quite a challenge.

ZamZar did well, though. The two column layout was preserved, the images
were reproduced in their correct locations and the varying fonts rendered
well, given that Word had no exact matching fonts. Importantly, all the text
could be edited from within Word On the downside the image quality was
reduced and the article's large opening drop capital was displaced. Not bad
though.

My second recommendation, KoolWire

http://www.koolwire.com/Messenger01.aspx

works very similar to ZamZar. There are, however, some differences:

First, the converted KoolWire file comes back as RTF, not DOC format. That's
not a problem though, as Word can easily read RTF files. Second, the
KoolWire site suggests that if the file being converted is less than 10MB,
then you should email the file rather than directly upload it. This is
rather less convenient, so I told a white lie and selected the "more than
10MB" option, in which case I was able to directly upload the file just like
with ZamZar.

There was another minor annoyance. The KoolWire site is in Italian and,
although an English option is offered, it is less than complete. Still, it's
not hard to work out what you have to do.

Conversion quality was good, but on my sample file the converted RTF file
was not quite as good as ZamZar. Two of the document's pages mysteriously
ended up as tables, and the image quality was poorer. On the other hand,
KoolWire got the big drop capital correct, though at the expense of messing
the left justification of the paragraph that contained it. At 869KB, the
converted file was similar in size to the 829KB ZamZar file.

Overall, both these free conversion services are good though not perfect.
Which one gives the best conversion will probably depend on the document
being converted, so why not try both?

Regarding using a personally owned rogram for conversion, Kurzweil from
Kurzweil Educatioal Systems converts a pdf file upon opening it.

Unfortunately this program is what's know as assistive software that
includes speech with scanning, word processing and more. The program costs
around $1,000.

A more reasonable program is PDF Magic from Premier Technology. It cost $39.
When getting a pdf file, open it with PDF Magic and it will be converted to
text or rtf.

This program also has synthetic speech for use by visually impaired
individuals.

2010-04-14 Thread Ann M. Medlar
Hi thanks for this information. I receive many PDF attachments and quite
honestly I think it is clearer listening in MP3 then OpenBook format, but I
am grateful that I also have the text so I might copy and paste for
reference.

Thanks again,
Ann

Hello Ann,

In OB 7, it's an option under the file menu "save to audio." You have
the option to save a page range or single page and you can save to
either wav, or mp3 format.

It may take a few minutes or hours, depending on the document size.

Kurzweil has more options, like changing bitrates and to write to a cd.

Regards,

Riana

Honestly unsure how to do this in OB. Do you remember where that would
be
located? I just tried to save as and I did not see MP3 or wav as
choices.

Actually, Openbook does record Elequence onto MP3 formatted files, if

you

set it to record the text into either WAV or MP3, its your choice.

I hope this helps, I had the program as a demo, that's how I know.

There may be some software out there but one off the cuff way to do

this

and I don't know if it would work but...
Open .pdf file using scanning software.
I think scanning software like Openbook reads PDF files better.
File is read using synthesized voice, eloquence, sappy...
You can then record the synthesized reading using a digital recorder.
You now have a audio file on your recorder that you can copy to your

PC.

I know that you can go from speech to text using Dragon or similar
software but don't know if there are other ways.

Hi,
Using Internet Explorer, in File menu there is the option Import and
Export.

Here there are some radio buttons, the third one is Export to a file.
Press nex, here you have to choose what do you want to export, press space
bar on Favorites to check it. Nex, nex, finish, finally the default name
of the file containing your favorite sites is "bookmark.htm", the file can
be found in My documents.
On the other computer, in Internet Explorer, go in same place, File menu,
Import and Export. Choose now the second radio buton, Import from a file.
After pressing next, you have to check favorites, next, choose the file
"bookmark.htm" and that's all.

I have Internet Explorer 8.0.

Hi again,
Yes I did this and copied configurations to my CF card.
One other question. I wanted to copy my stock analysis folder under
favorites but had trouble.
I pressed start menu entered on favorites and scrolled down to my stock
analysis folder. Selected folder, copied and it would not copy nor
paste.
I finally opened each web site and pressed F6 key and copied each URl to
clipboard and tried to copy to folder on CF card. this did not work.
So I created a stoc analysis.txt in notepad and copied the 3 urls into
text file into my folder on CF card.

Any reasons why I could not easily copy the folder?

Go to Start, Programs, Jaws 11, Explore Jaws, My settings.
In this folder there is a folder named PlaceMarkers.
Open it, Sellect all with control + a, and copy.
Make a folder on your flash memory and paste the content there.
After you can copy the content in the same folder named PlaceMarkers in
other computers.

Hi all,
I customized many sites on the web.
First I have 3 web sites in a folder under my favorites.
I launch IE, then alt+a for favorites and type 's' for stock sites and
enter

Within this folder I have 3 sites.
I enter on first site and I have bookmarks shift+control+k to move to
specific links all over site.I have several bookmarks on all 3
sites.
I want to use a different computer so rather than doing customizations
all over how do I transport these settings to another PC? What is file
name and how do I install it?

I am using Windows XP media IE8 and JAWS Version 11.0.756U
My other PC I am using Windows xP downgraded from vista, IE 8, I have
Jaws 11 but unsure what version.

Thanks,
Ann

[JAWS-Users] RE Delete headers in Word 2007

2010-04-14 Thread First CRC Tom Vos
Just one small idea to check.
There are some header settings on the page layout window, such as making
Word put a differetn header on page 1 and 2.
I don't know if this is the problem, but you might want to look at it.
Alt P, then M
Control tab to the layout page.
Blessings,
Tom

Maybe what you think is a header on Page 2 is not really a header, but has
been created with some other feature in Word.

Dear Jaws List,
I cannot get Microsoft Word to remove a header from the second page of
my document. I divide the first page from the second with a section break.
Then I go to the insert tab on the ribbon (alt n) press h for header, and
scroll to remove header. The header on page 3 as well as headers in the rest
of the document are removed. It doesn't matter where I place the cursor. Am
I missing a Jaws command or a step? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
