hello Mike;

just a quick question?

why would you need the Ubit program, for navigating ribbons, when you can
use the jaws vertual ribbon feature. this also allows the easy menu
navigation.

Hi Jim,

I, like you, don't care for the ribbons I don't use them enough to
really
get familiar with them or the shortcut keystrokes but, I may have
something
for you. I found this great little program / app called, UBit, that
makes
the ribbons work kind of like the older menues from older versions of
Office. Go to the link below:

http://www.ubit.ch/software/ubitmenu-languages/

Once you're on the website press the letter, H, to navigate by heading

you'll land on:

UBitMenu for Office 2007, 2010 and 2013 Shortcuts

Now, arrow down to:

. Download English UBitMenu

Click on the link to get the download. I'll put the steps for Office
2010
below.

for private use (free for private use). This setup will work with
Office
2007, 2010 and 2013.
Close all open Office programs before installing!

Office 2010 Steps:
Personally, before using the Ubit program I turn a couple of things
off in
Jaws / Options/ Basics to cut down on excess Jaws chatter. They are:

Tutor Message, Turn off Menu and Control Help

Access Key, set to off.

After installing the UBit program do the following to access the
menues:
MS Word:

1. Press the, Alt key, to open the menu bar.
2. Right arrow 2 times to the, Menu tab.
3. Now you can tab from menu to menu. When you are on the menu you
want
you'll hear, File sub-menu, for example, so, press enter to
open the dropdown list you can down or up arrow through the list of
options.
4. When you are on the menu you want press enter or if you hear an
option
/ button, press the spacebar to open.

Note: That anything new to 2007 or later shows up at the bottom of
the appropriate menu, so you don't lose anything.

Excel:

1. Press the, Alt key, to open the menu bar.
2. Right arrow 2 times to the, Menu tab.
3. Now you can tab from menu to menu. When you are on the menu you
want
you'll hear, File button dropdown, for example so, press the spacebar
to
open the dropdown list you can down or up arrow through the list of
options.
4. When you are on the option you want press enter or if you hear an
option
/ button, press the spacebar to open.

Power Point:

1. Press the, Alt key, to open the menu bar.

I am finding the recent ribbon menu discussions helpful as I struggle
to
transition from rank ribbon neophyte to journeyman. I'm using win7,
64
bit. When I land on a dropdown grid in an element on a lower ribbon I
attempt to use the arrow keys as instructed and nothing happens. None
of the other navigational techniques I know work either - tab, etc. I
enabled the JAWS ribbon menu for ease of access. Any ideas how to
unlock the dropdown grid's secrets?

More generally..I see where not using the JAWS ribbon menu feature can
be advantageous to one who can first letter navigate. Is the ribbon
menu feature just the equivalent of training wheels? This said, I use
Word only for drafts and won't likely need more than an occasional
layout and print color change. Bottom line, I don't like extensive
tabbing or arrowing so maybe going cold turkey to the pure ribbon view
may work

Here's some instructions for setting the view in wlm2011.

while in Wlm,

Try the following; Note; These instructions assume that you don't
have
the jaws ribbon feature turned on.

 Yu need to:
 Go into the view menu,
 Set the;

To one line view,
 So,
 Alt+v=view,
 use the tab key, ,
until you hear message drop down,
 Press enter.
Now tab and select, one line view press enter.

 Next,
 Alt+v=view,
use the tab key, until you hear; Reading pane drop down press enter.
Now tab to off, press enter.

 Next,
 Alt+v=view,
 use the tab key,
 until you hear;
 Calendar pane,
 If it says,
 Calendar pane pressed,
Press enter this turns off the calendar pane.
Next,
Follow the above steps,
Alt+v=view,
Using the tab key, if you hear;
Quick views button pressed,
Press the enter key to turn off.
Next,
Depending on how you want to receive your messages, Ascending or descending,
Alt+v=view,
Use the tab key until you hear;
Sort order drop down,
Enter or spacebar,
Make your choice press enter.

By the way, there are key strokes to do this, however, I thought it
best for folks to learn how to navigate the menus.

It should be expanded to have all the options available to you by using your

main ribbons (home, insert, page layout, mailings, review, add-ins) in order

Apparently, this feature is absent in Word 2007 because when I scroll
across

the ribbon menus with the left and right arrow key, I do not encounter
any
check box or button that indicates whether the ribbon menus are
minimized

or

maximized. If I scroll across the upper ribbons with the right arrow
key,

the last tab I encounter is Search Commands. If I continue to right
arrow,
I land on the Microsoft Office Word Help button, then Office Button
Submenu
Grid and finally wrap around back to theHome tab. If I minimize the
ribbons
by pressingControl-F1, I get the same results, although, interestingly,
the
upper tabs seem to respond a little less sluggishly in this minimized
mode
than they do when the ribbons are maximized. Other than this subtle
clue, I

have no other way to know whether the ribbons are minimized or
maximized,

and I suspect that other blind users of Office 2007 may be unaware that
their ribbon menus are not properly maximized, and hence become
frustrated
trying to navigate them. Perhaps JAWS should be enhanced so that it
announces something like ribbons minimized and ribbons restored when
Control-F1 is pressed repeatedly.

Gerald,

I don't have Office 2007 but do have Office 2010. If you hit your alt
key in Word and right arrow across the top ribbon structure, toward
the end you'll hear a button that says minimize the ribbons. If you
select this with space bar and then repeat the steps this time it will
announce a check box that is checked. Of course the ctrl F1 toggles it
as well as David mentioned.

 hello there;
 my first thought is,
do you have the view setup properly in windows live mail on the computers
which are giving you the problemns?

Here's some instructions for setting the view in wlm2011.

 while in Wlm,

Try the following; Note; These instructions assume that you don't
 have
the jaws ribbon feature turned on.

 Yu need to:
 Go into the view menu,
 Set the;
 Message list drop down;
 To one line view,
 So,
 Alt+v=view,
 use the tab key, ,
until you hear message drop down,
 Press enter.
Now tab and select, one line view press enter.

 Next,
 Alt+v=view,
use the tab key, until you hear; Reading pane drop down press enter.
Now tab to off, press enter.

 Next,
 Alt+v=view,
 use the tab key,
 until you hear;
 Calendar pane,
 If it says,
 Calendar pane pressed,
Press enter this turns off the calendar pane.
 Next,
 Follow the above steps,
 Alt+v=view,
 Using the tab key, if you hear;
 Quick views button pressed,
Press the enter key to turn off.
 Next,
Depending on how you want to receive your messages, Ascending or
 descending,
 Alt+v=view,
 Use the tab key until you hear;
 Sort order drop down,
 Enter or spacebar,
 Make your choice press enter.

By the way, there are key strokes to do this, however, I thought it
best for folks to learn how to navigate the menus.

When you are on the menu you
 want
you'll hear, File sub-menu, for example,

[JAWS-Users] add-ons

2014-03-19 Thread anna vimini
call advisor for thunderbird and fire fox is a tool bar that tells you
which sites are safe that you visit on the internet.
it is almost like your site advisor tool bar that comes with your anti
virus software.

for example McAfee site advisor tool bar.
the reason I am asking if anyone used it is because my McAfee site
advisor tool bar that was listed in the Thunderbird add-ons is suddenly
not listed their but is still listed in internet explorer and I do not
know how to get it back.

Re: [JAWS-Users] add-ons
What is it for?
Never heard of that.

Re: [JAWS-Users] silencing the talking heads

2014-03-19 Thread Blackwell, Clifford
I think what Dave is describing is on certain web pages such as ESPN or CNN,
there is an audio of a story they are featuring running when you enter the web
page. The audio, often, is unrelated to a link that you may have followed to
the page and the audio can make finding the print story difficult with a screen
reader. What Dave is asking and I'd like to know also, is there some way to
stop or silence the audio story that automatically starts when you bring up one
of these web pages so that it's easier to use one's screen reader.

Re: [JAWS-Users] silencing the talking heads

2014-03-19 Thread Flor Lynch
At the moment I have an advantage in that as i use an external speech
synthesizer, in such situations I can turn down the speakers and listen
to JAWS reading through the speech synth. Windows7 assigns volume to
each different process: and therefore, before beginning to read, it
might be possible to substantially reduce the volume of the streaming
content while at the same time retaining or increasing the JAWS volume.
you tab through the various applications running that are listed in the
volume control, and adjust each according to your preference.

[JAWS-Users] Platforms for Collaboration

2014-03-19 Thread Fanny Chalfin
Hi there,

I'm a therapist involved in a joint research project. I am looking for a
platform where I can collaborate with colleagues writing papers together and
sharing research information including a database of articles relevant to

platform that would work well with JAWS or ones that wouldn't work well at
all?

Thank you in advance.

using jaws 15.0.7023 and windows 7 has anyone experienced jaws crashing
after awhile of computing. I have experienced this when I surf IE 11 and
other programs also but mostly IE 11. jaws will just quit speaking and the
only way to get jaws to speak again is to reboot. I’ve contacted FS about
this but have not received a reply.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Note For Using The Ubit Program / App With Jaws

2014-03-19 Thread Mike B.
Hi Al,

Below are 2 links but, let me preface these by saying, I wasn't taking the
proper time or putting forth much of an effort to learn ribbons until
recently, now finding out the proper keystrokes for navigating ribbons
plus about minimizing / maximizing, I can navigate the ribbbons with
the,Virtual Ribbon Menu option checked, ribbons maximized, or with them
minimized, both comfortably confidently!

Hi David,

Well, I can only say that, thanks to you showing me about maximizing
the ribbons, I don't need Ubit but, it doesn't hurt to have it
installed since it doesn't interfere with anything. I've read so many
articles on not using the virtual ribbon menu feature that I was
attempting to learn the ribbon structure without it but, now being
enlightened about the maximizing of ribbons I'll have to play around
with this option as well. The 1 thing I can say, is maximizing the
ribbons, sure took away any all questions or inhibitions I had about
using them!  Thanks again.
Take care.

hello Mike;

just a quick question?

why would you need the Ubit program, for navigating ribbons, when you
can
use the jaws vertual ribbon feature. this also allows the easy menu
navigation.

Hi All,

I've noticed that when using the Ubit program / app, the ribbons need
to be
minimized for the program / app to work properly. Thanks to David,
now I
have 2 options for nabigating the ribbons! Using Ubit with the
ribbons
minimized or, normally with the ribbons maximized.
Take care.

The gentleman that runs it is named David. He is also blind and is very
attuned to our needs. I have a domain and several mailman groups with him.

 Best,
 Al

Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessible Domain Registrars

2014-03-19 Thread Brent Harding
I vote for Namecheap. Their site is quite accessible. The only issue I ever
had with them, and it was probably an honest bug on their part is that at
least with mine, they defaulted my domains to have their company info for
all the contact fields, even though I explicitly unchecked who-is privacy.
It was an easy enough fix, but with the new rules now requiring email
confirmation now, this could be where to check if you don't receive the
message you need to confirm.
