Re: [JAWS-Users] CCleaner & Its Drive Wiper Tool

2014-08-04 Thread Dialup @ 56k

Hello Mike,
One of the best ways to deal with hard drive in general, whether it be
partitions etc, is to boot from a specific utility, a process which is
totally inaccessible to us JAWS users.
However, with some sighted assistance, utilities like Gparted for
manipulating drive structure / partitions is a safe and efficient way to
get this otherwise dangerous task completed.
Similarly inaccessible is Darik's Boot and Nuke for deleting the
contents of any hard disk but it's a great program.

Unfortunately, there are some tasks that may well be beyond us.
I would love to drive a Porsche 911, but it's not going to happen this
side of judgment day!!

Hello Mike,
I would urge extreme caution doing such things to a boot drive.
Remember that Windoze utilises free space to do lots of house keeping,
and there are lots of thing stored temporarily in RAM / cache.
I would expect Windoze to behave very defensively in this situation.

[JAWS-Users] using JAWS with Avast 2014

2014-08-04 Thread James Eastmead
Hi;

I am new to this list
I will be installing Avast on my new laptop which has JAWS 15 and Windows
8.1. I am planning to use the Ninite Avast installer to avoid any of the
unwanted third party software. Is their anything else that I need to know
about installing and using Avast with JAWS? I have heard some reports of
Avast blocking JAWS. Is their anything that I can do to avoid this from
happening? Also, If this does happen, what do I do?

Thank you in advance.

Jaws does not tell me which process is locking out the Drive Wiper process.
Is CCleaner supposed to show me which process is locking out the Drive Wiper
process & Jaws just is not able to see it? I have tried with both my Anti
Virus disabled & enabled with the same results. I'm running XP Pro Jaws 13,
& CCleaner 4.16. Has anyone ran across this & knows what process might be
causing the locking out of the Drive Wiper process? Any help would be
greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Take care.

Mike,

Have you ever heard of a program called Kill Disk? It will supposedly do the
job, and it is a free utility. Search it on the net if you want, guaranteed
to remove everything.

Ok, when you are in the combo box try doing an alt down arrow and then
picking the library that you want and then do an alt up arrow to close
the combo box.

Re: [JAWS-Users] MSconfig

2014-08-04 Thread Rick Justice
Hi Mario,
I want to be clear here, we are talking about the "startup" tab, which lists
programs, and not the "Services" tab, which lists the running services.

Over the years I have found that aside from the items I mentioned in my
earlier post,
everything else is a matter of preference.
In Windows 98 I found that 2 items for my HP scanner had to be checked in
order for OpenBook to identify it,
but that was only true of the HP, other brands didn't require that.
It is not uncommon for any of my systems to have no more than 2 items
checked in the startup tab.
As far as services go, these will vary from system to system, depending on
the user's needs.
I have seen as many as 180 services listed in Windows, but rarely are all
running, or enabled for that matter.
There are resources on the internet for lists of services that can be safely
disabled,
for each version of Windows.
I think black viper.com is one of them.

HTH,
Rick Justice

Those do not need to load at startup.
Typically, the only programs that need to load when Windows boots are your

some audio.
Anything past that is just robbing your system of resources.
A good rule-of-thumb islaunch the software when you are ready to use it,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Best Way To Wipe My C Drive

2014-08-04 Thread Mario Brusco
well, that's what the term wipe means. and Mike's post asked that. most
people do not know or realize that a format does not wipe the HD.

FYI that method might just require you to reformat your drive afterwards
since it will completely wipe the drive of all its directory structure and
file allocation table.

use Darik's Boot and Nuke before doing a full format. You will need sighted
help to get dBAN started but doing so will completely wipe the HD. a format
simply prepares the HD for software.

I would just format the drive during install.
The Windows installer will offer a format of the drive when doing a fresh
install.

I believe that these will not open automatically when your iPhone is
connected to your computer if these are disabled. This is not something that
is mandatory to have happen, you can always open them manually before or
after connecting the phone. It is more of a convenience.

Hi Holjer,
Those do not need to load at startup.
Typically, the only programs that need to load when Windows boots are your
security software, Jaws and in rare occasions,

some audio.
Anything past that is just robbing your system of resources.
A good rule-of-thumb islaunch the software when you are ready to use it,
and close it when you are finished.
