[JAWS-Users] ocr failed to start

2015-02-25 Thread Shane Hecker
I'm using Windows 7 home premium 64 bit with the latest build of Jaws
16. When I tried to do an OCR on a pdf document that appeared to be
empty, it says "OCR failed to start". How do you fix that? I had several
versions of Freedom Scientific OCR so removed all those plus Freedom
Scientific Fine Reader and FS Omnipage, then reinstalled from the file I
downloaded from FS's web site. Still problem persists.

I have both of them and am using Jaws 14. I do have, but have not yet installed
Jaws 16.

I am using either Internet Explorer 11 or the latest Fire Fox browser.

Any help will be gratefully received!!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Guide for Uninstalling Jaws

2015-02-25 Thread Rose Combs
Use the Windows key, search for Jaws, open the folder arrow down until you
hear uninstall jaws and follow the prompts, do not say yes to remove shared
components unless FS has suggested you do so. Alternatively go into the
control panel to remove programs arrow down to Jaws and press the context
key to and press enter on uninstall, this sometimes suggests you go
uninstall from the Jaws menu.

It is easy, really it is, I usually keep two versions on my main computer,
just in case, but this one any the laptop I will be using for work just have
16 on them.
You can't learn how to do stuff with your computer if you won't take small
chances with good directions.
This one is basically a simple thing to accomplish. I have been doing
uninstalls since 1998 with various versions with only one time having a
problem it took longer to fix than I anticipated, when I deleted shared
components. That was a very long time ago, and eventually I had to install
a version from disk then upgrade to fix the problem.

uninstall of a prior version of Jaws.
A guideline however you wanted to do it, but I personally could benefit from

it, especially if it's been awhile since I last performed the task.

Thank you, I wish I had read this before I almost had a mini

It's just so unnerving to hear jaws in his drunk mode and
stuck, thanks to window's update window popping up.
I didn't uninstall the shared components, I didn't uninstall
J13 either, sigh I do like it through the programs/features
better though. I did uninstall
j12 talking installer, don't ask me why that was there when
not even j12 full version was, that's an embarrassing
mistake on my part.
I typically like to have just 2 versions on my systems only,
so I needed to do some clean up here.
I was fretting after rebooting, I wouldn't have speech this
was cause of my first attemp going through the jaws
uninstaller, drunk jaws says...your 40 minute demo has
expired, well what the heck, I have full paid version here,
so dunno what that was all about.
Thankfully j15 came back talking after reboot, so I just
went through P/F, and heck didn't even loose speech while
that happened, huge relief!

Re: [JAWS-Users] regarding iTunes update of 12.1.1.4

2015-02-25 Thread Rose Combs
It is usable somewhat but certainly not as easy as 11. Why they took so
much accessibility out of it is what I do not understand. I'd much rather
work where I have a real keyboard to type on where a touch on the screen
does not send you off to nowhere land sometimes no matter how careful you
are but have to admit since 12, I have used my phone more, but the iPad
mini, it is just too sensitive, even with the setting changed to slow it
down, I think I can blow on it and it will go bouncing around.

I appreciate voiceover on my phone and the iPad, so why can't they make
iTunes work without having to tab all over the place, sometimes the control
and a number works, sometimes not.

[JAWS-Users] Finding and locating Text within a PDF using Adobe Reader

2015-02-25 Thread Rob

Hi Group,

Using Windows 7 and JAWS 16 with Adobe PDF Reader. I have a question
regarding searching for text within a large PDF document. When I need to
locate a word or text string within a PDF document, the only way to do
this is by using the search dialog box within Adobe Reader by using the
Control+F key combination. Using the JAWS search tool won't work because
it will only find text on the current page. If the search is successful,
Adobe Reader will present the page within the document with the search
text highlighted. I then need to press the Escape key to exit the Adobe
Reader search dialog box. The question now becomes, how do you get JAWS
to locate on that highlighted text? If you just start reading with JAWS,
it will either start at the top of the page or where you were reading
from if you had previously visited that page. I know I can then do a
JAWS search on that page to find that same text but it would be nice if
JAWS would automatically locate itself on that highlighted text so you
could just start reading from there when you escaped from the Adobe
search tool.
For another potential work around, is there some function within JAWS
scripting that will locate a highlighted block of text on the current
page? That way, a small script could be written to move JAWS to that
text position with a single keystroke.
Surely others must do this as well and know how to automatically link
the found text to JAWS.

Thanks,
Rob

much? I can use it for the store and updates but to manage music, not me,
good thing I don't want a lot on my phone, I am more into books and I do

Just to let all of you know, the updated version of ITunes 12.1.1.4
works well with jaws 16. My friend has windows 7 and I have windows
8 and there is no probem with either one. I would like to take the
time to thank Apple for the great work that they have done for us.

I use to be able to use that method. Now when I go to send or send-to I only
have the following choices:

drop box, dvd drive E or team viewer.

Place the focus on the document you wish to attach. Right Click on the
document or hit the context key. Arrow up or down to "Send" or "Send to".
Right arrow to the list of places where the file or document can be sent.
Arrow up or down to "Mail Recipient" and click on that.
This will bring up an email with the document attached. Enter the address
of the person or persons to whom you wish to send the document. If you want
text in the email, tab down beyond the indication of the attachment to the
body and typ in your message. Then send the mail as you would normally.

I don't believe this is dependent upon who your provider is. It's a

And I, too, like to keep just the current and previous versions. That

Trish,
I do not believe it really makes a difference. The important thing is
whether you want to uninstall the shared components. Personally, I always
choose no to this because if there are other programs relying on those
shared components they will not work correctly. If anyone else on the
list

Hi Trish

There is only one copy of the shared components that is used by all versions
of JAWS. If you delete the shared components for any one version, you have
deleted the shared components for all versions and none of them will work.

It's just so unnerving to hear jaws in his drunk mode and

I didn't uninstall the shared components, I didn't uninstall

I typically like to have just 2 versions on my systems only,

Trish,
I do not believe it really makes a difference. The important
thing is
whether you want to uninstall the shared components.
Personally, I always
choose no to this because if there are other programs
relying on those
shared components they will not work correctly. If anyone

has other information, or does not find what I am saying

I didn't uninstall the shared components, I didn't uninstall

j12 talking installer, don't ask me why that was there when
not even j12 full version was, that's an embarrassing
mistake on my part.

Trish,
I do not believe it really makes a difference. The important
thing is
whether you want to uninstall the shared components.
Personally, I always
choose no to this because if there are other programs
relying on those
shared components they will not work correctly. If anyone
else on the list
has other information, or does not find what I am saying
correct, please

2015-02-25 Thread Jim Pursley
You describe the angst of a careful but intrepid JAWS user. My turn
will come next year when I uninstall J15. The talking installer these
days is separate from the JAWS program and need to be uninstalled
individually. I had a bunch of them in a string before recently
removing them. Just clutter with no damage.

Hi Ted,

It doesn't matter where you get CCleaner from. Even if you get it from,
Piriform, the people that make CCleaner that's going to happen. When you
install CCleaner it's necessary to read all the screens thoroughly using the
Jaws cursor & if you do this on the, Install button, you would see
checkboxes that need to be unchecked so Chrome & the Google toolbar don't
get installed. But, there is a great work around for this, a program called
Unchecky! Information is below:

Anyone who is concerned about unintentionally installing promotional
software may be interested in trying Unchecky.

http://unchecky.com/

It runs in the background as a service and monitors for recognized
installers. It then automatically unchecks any checkboxes related to
installing toolbars,
browsers, and similar unwanted products. I have not thoroughly tested the
program and it is not guaranteed to catch everything, but there have already
been several updates since the initial release so I'm sure it's detection
rate will improve.

I've been using the program described above for quite awhile now & I've
never had a problem with the Chrome or the Google toolbar since I installed
it.

HTH
Take care.

Chrome is a real cutie. Not only doesn't it work very well with JAWS, it
causes it to hang upon exit, and can cost your activation. I'm dealing with
that problem right now.

At least in Jaws 12 and 13, Chrome seems to be almost as good as Firefox as
far as being able to browse with it, except for every now and then when the
virtual buffer doesn't kick in to let you read the page, but the problem
with some of these programs' installers is that they set the stuff as
default which is likely not what most wanted to happen. Maybe some of the
checkboxes to turn it off don't speak either. I remember it's either
CCleaner or Advanced System Care that turns inline autocomplete back on in
Internet Explorer when you run it, which for using Jaws is one of the most
annoying things having it speak partial ends of words as you try to type in
the address bar, so I keep turning it off.

Try insert+space bar, o, then w. You can sometimes get further
information by using this technique. If after doing this you see
something like "a faster way to brows" or anything other than what you
see using conventional methods, click on it. It will then put you in a
web page where you can select whether or not to install Chrome and the
toolbar.

Gerald,
Unfortunately that's quite normal with 'modern' software installers.
It's either Ask or Chrome or a few similar bun unnecessary, but you
have the option to uncheck the install box during setup, IF of
course you can find it.
So now you can use C Cleaner to un install chrome.

At least in Jaws 12 and 13, Chrome seems to be almost as good as Firefox
as
far as being able to browse with it, except for every now and then when
the

virtual buffer doesn't kick in to let you read the page, but the problem
with some of these programs' installers is that they set the stuff as
default which is likely not what most wanted to happen. Maybe some of the
checkboxes to turn it off don't speak either. I remember it's either
CCleaner or Advanced System Care that turns inline autocomplete back on in
Internet Explorer when you run it, which for using Jaws is one of the most
annoying things having it speak partial ends of words as you try to type
in

the address bar, so I keep turning it off.

So now you can use C Cleaner to un install chrome.

examine the installation options in the user interface, I did not
come across any check box or other means of preventing Google
Chrome from being installed along with CCleaner. I do not remember
having this problem in the past, so it looks like Puriform is now
forcing Chrome down your throat whether you want it or not. Chrome
is still not especially JAWS accessible, and removing it is a real
pain. Therefore, I suggest that a warning be added to the CCleaner
download link that downloading and installing CCleaner will also
result in the installation of Google Chrome, which is nothing but
unwanted crapware for most JAWS users.

[JAWS-Users] Excel 10 & Windows 8.1

2015-02-25 Thread sandy stegmayer
I thought I saw this discussed a while back but I can’t find it so... Using
Excel 10 on my Windows 8.1 laptop... When I use F2 to open and edit a cell,
Jaws does not say the character when I use the left/right arrows. It will say
the entire contents when I hit the up/down arrows. I know the arrows are moving
the cursor because It will tell me the name of the character if I
backspace/erase it. I do not have this problem when using Excel on my Window 7
machine. I do however have arrow problems on both laptops when using OneNote
but no problem on either when using Word. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Sandy

Re: [JAWS-Users] regarding iTunes update of 12.1.1.4

2015-02-25 Thread Pauline

Hi Kimsan,

Try this and see if it helps.

In your music library you will find an iTunes folder.
Open that, and arrow down one time.
You should find a folder named iTunes Media.
Open that, and find Automatically add to iTunes.
Open that folder, and place your selected songs in that folder.

I am doing this from memory, so the names of the folders may not be exact,
but they should be close enough for you to find what you want.

[JAWS-Users] Uninstalling Jaws

2015-02-25 Thread Trish
I need to know which is the best way to remove jaws from my window's 7
laptop?

Do I do it through the control panel/programs-features or, through Jaws on
start menu uninstall?

Thanks for any help,

Trish

Re: [JAWS-Users] Warning About Downloading CCleaner From JAWSUsers Programs Page

2015-02-25 Thread Mike B.

Holger,
Extremely urgent!
1. Do not call that number. Your system has been contaminated by malware.
If you call the number, someone will offer to fix your system for hundreds of
dollars USD.
2. You have two choices.
A: Create a system Restore point and take it back at least a month.
B: Contact Microsoft Disability Support and they will assist in removing the
malware.

This kind of problem is unfortunately quite common these days.
NOTE: If this isn't your problem, please relay it to the person with the
Kidnap malware issue.

According to Microsoft Disability Support, the only effective way to remove
something like that is with a really strong anti-virus program like Hitman Pro
or Avast.

I'd like to see someone develop a piece of software that would find these
people and then destroy their computers.

 Gerald,
Unfortunately that's quite normal with 'modern' software installers.
It's either Ask or Chrome or a few similar bun unnecessary, but you
have the option to uncheck the install box during setup, IF of
 course you can find it.
So now you can use C Cleaner to un install chrome.

There is the JAWS 16 convenient OCR feature. I'm not sure how it would handle
large pdf's, but it's fine on smaller ones such as letters. I'd like if it
could handle mixed-format pdf's, i.e., those containing images of text and
straight text. I put that forward to FS, and it may have been passed on to
whomever is responsible for developing the document OCR.

(To be clear, I'd distinguish between 'graphic' and 'image' pdf's. Graphic
could refer to purely pictorial, with no text in it.)

Thanks, Flor! I knew about Open Bok and Kurzweil, of course, but not the
others. I'm not so much looking for ways to scan material from print and read
it as I am to be able to convert graphic PDF files to text PDF files that I can
read, if that is even possible. But I'll look into some of those off the shelf
