Mike, for anyone else's information, the sounds.exe that MS provides has a
bug where the installer will not recognize versions of Office or their
included programs (Word, Excel, etc.) above 2003, thus the reply for
extracting the MSI and running it.

stands for Microsoft System Installer.

Hi James,

I use Vipre Internet Security, and I also run MalWare Bytes along with it. I
cannot say that it is absolutely necessary to run both, but I have had
Malware Bytes find things that Vipre did not, and they both are good
products. As far as being compatible, they do work well together, but you
must install Vipre first, as it will remove any other antivirus/malware
software it finds on your computer during its installation. Vipre 2015 was
not very JAWS compatible but the latest update of JAWS did make it more
compatible, and I find that it works well now.

anyone should not have more than one antivirus on their system because they

Mario,
Below are steps to disable MSE from PC World... Unfortunately it might
require sighted assistance since I could not find a settings button and
clicking on real time protection with the Jaws cursor on the MSE home page
does nothing using Jaws 16 in windows 7.

From PC World
However, I recently needed to troubleshoot a program that wasn't working
properly, and, as always, the tech support department's first suggestion was
to disable my antivirus program.

Normally I ignore this advice, but because the program in question involves
a lot of file downloading from various protected servers, I thought it might
actually be worth a try. Just one catch: How the heck do you disable
Security Essentials?

When you open the tool, there's no immediately obvious way. But if you
absolutely need to, here's how:

1. Find the Security Essentials icon in your System Tray (usually it's
represented by a little green house with a flag on top). Right-click it and
choose Open.

2. Click the Settings tab.

3. Click Real-time protection.

4. Uncheck the box next to Turn on real-time protection (recommended).

5. Click the Save changes button.

So that's the equivalent of switching Security Essentials to off. Do that,
then go back to whatever you're trying to troubleshoot and see if it solves
the problem. (If it does, well, that's a whole other can of worms.)

All the discussion of various anti-virus programs that do or don't work well
with Jaws on this list is tempting me to give some a try with a free trial
period. I am currently using MSE on a windows 7 64 bit computer with Jaws 16.
If I wanted to download a trial version of ESET NOD32 Antivirus would I first
have to remove MSE or could both be on the computer at the same time?

[JAWS-Users] VIPRE's usability

2015-03-03 Thread Mario Brusco
sI'm still using the 2014 version because of it's interface is somewhat
screen reader friendly, more than what I experienced in the past.

I think there's a distinction to make between a program being accessible
versus being screen reader friendly, in that a program that is screen reader
friendly allows a blind user to utilize that program more effectively rather
than that program just being accessible, which does not promote useability
by the blind user. especially with a security suite, one has to respond in a
timely manner, and for blind users, we need to be able to do the same. the
more screen reader friendly a program is, the more frequently a blind user
will use said program.

I welcome any thoughts, but not to much as to upset the moderators.

Hi Robin.
I am noticing the same problem. The info for today's temps are F., but when
you get into extended forcast, it gives only C. I have looked on the
Weather underground site and can't find a place to change it to just F.
Maybe they will notice the problem and fix it soon.

 Robin,

When I use it, it comes up with both Fahrenheit and Celsius. Not sure
it can be changed, since it's pulling data from a web site.

Dear friends
I am looking for a mailing list like this, where I can pose general
technology questions about various topics including talking telephone and
other talking electronic devices. I searched a lot on the web, but I could
find no active forum or mailing list. Would you please tell me where I can
discuss such matters?
Even if you don't know such forums, I appreciate if you introduce the
persons who can help me via skype. I want to know what talking devices are
used by the blind persons in other countries. I am particularly looking for
talking desktop telephones, because I can't find good models in Iran.

Thanks in advance.

The only real difference is that the Internet Security includes the
firewall, and the antivirus does not. It is recommended that with the
antivirus version, that the Windows firewall be kept enabled.

Re: [JAWS-Users] VIPRE's usability

2015-03-03 Thread Mike Boyd

Hi Mario,

I am still using Vipre 2015, and since the last update of JAWS 16, I now can
access the schedules to set Vipre up to scan at specific times, choose the
type of scan that I want, and Vipre announces to me when it starts a scan.
There is an icon in the notification area that always tells you of Vipres
condition, whether it is updated or not, which it ddoes automatically, and
it shows the last date and time that the definition update took place. I can
also access the quarantine, view the threats that were detected, and delete
them if so desired. This is as much as I have been to do with any Antivirus
program since using JAWS,and all that I have ever been able to do with
Vipre. All other settings, i.e. the firewall etc. are accessible too. I do
not know if Freedom Scientific is working directly with Threat Track
Security, but things got much better with this last JAWS update. Just my
observations, not meant to upset anyone.

screen reader friendly, more than what I experienced in the past.

I welcome any thoughts, but not to much as to upset the moderators.

sI'm still using the 2014 version because of it's interface is somewhat
screen reader friendly, more than what I experienced in the past.

Hi James,

I use Vipre Internet Security, and I also run MalWare Bytes along with it. I
cannot say that it is absolutely necessary to run both, but I have had Malware
Bytes find things that Vipre did not, and they both are good products. As far
as being compatible, they do work well together, but you must install Vipre
first, as it will remove any other antivirus/malware software it finds on your
computer during its installation. Vipre 2015 was not very JAWS compatible but
the latest update of JAWS did make it more compatible, and I find that it works
well now.

sI'm still using the 2014 version because of it's interface is somewhat
screen reader friendly, more than what I experienced in the past.

Re: [JAWS-Users] pdf protected view

2015-03-03 Thread Mike B.
Hi Jim,

Try 1 of the following suggestions I've save in case I ever needed them:

1. press ALT Key once. This will enable the ribbon / menu bar
2. press Control TAB and this will move the PC cursor to the information bar
that announces File Protection information. Use the Right Arrow once and you
will hit the ENABLE EDITING Button. Hit the space bar once and your document
is now off Protection mode.

Or,
I'm not sure this is what you're talking about but most documents I download
from the web always come through in protected form. I route JAWS to PC
cursor and arrow to where it says enable editing, and the route PC to JAWS
and then switch to VC. There may be an easier way but this works for me.

Take care.

sI'm still using the 2014 version because of it's interface is somewhat
screen reader friendly, more than what I experienced in the past.

Mario,
Below are steps to disable MSE from PC World...

Patti, you need to extract the sounds.msi from the executable, and run the
msi. you can use 7 zip to do this.
then you need to enable sound feedback in outlook. where to do this, I don't
know because I don't use outlook.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft sounds

Hey Gang,

I downloaded the Microsoft sounds, so I can have sounds in my word, and my
emails.

I know somewhere in the ribbons you have to check a box, so the sounds will
work, so here is my question.

Where is it, and please tell me step by step, lol?

I looked, and I can't find it.

I'm running windows7, jaws15, and MS2010.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Patti

2015-03-03 Thread Patti
Thanks
Hi Patti,

I'm using Word 2010. Under File/Options/Advanced, there is a Provide
feedback with sound checkbox. When you check this, sounds will be used in
all of your Office programs.

[JAWS-Users] an external sound card and jaws 15.

2015-03-03 Thread jim rawls
I have an external sound card I want to use so that I can record from another
sound
source. Every time, I plug the external sound card into my computer, all sounds
stop. I can't hear jaws etc. how do I get jaws, and all of my sounds on my
computer
to go to that external sound card? I know there is a place in the jaws program
that
says sound card, but when I go there, and switch, I hear nothing with the
external
sound card plugged in. So, how the heck do you use an external sound card on
your
computer, using jaws? I'm using jaws 15 on a W7 computer. Thanks for the help.

Hey Mike,
I got the sounds put on my new computer, but it took me a long time to find
out where that check box for sound feed was, but with help from this list I
got it.
Happy days again, lol.
Patti
Hi Patti,

I believe that if you press enter on the .MSI file it will install by
itself. If I'm not mistaken MSI stands for Microsoft Installer. Someone
please correct me if I'm wrong.

Take care.
