[JAWS-Users] trouble with downloading PDF documents on webpages

2015-08-27 Thread Vicki
I am having trouble downloading PDF documents using a link on certain webpages.
Right clicking the link does not give me the option to save it, nor does left
clicking. When pressing enter or the spacebar, it attempts to open the document
which crashes IE 11.

I do not have this problem on all webpages, so I'm wondering if anyone has a
suggestion as to how to download the PDF documents I need without opening them
with IE or, if I must open it from the webpage, how to access the file menu to
save it on my computer.

I am using both JAWS 14 and 15 with Windows 7 and IE 11.

Thanks.

[JAWS-Users] Reading by paragraph in Word with Jaws 16

2015-08-27 Thread Vicky Vaughan
Hi List, I am trying to figure out how to jump from the first line of paragraph
1 to the first line of paragraph 2.

In my test document, paragraph 1 had 2 lines followed by 2 carriage returns, so
a blank line was left.

The second paragraph consisted of 3 sentences, but only 2 lines.

Now, when I was on the first line of paragraph 1 and I used the Control Down
Arrow, instead of hearing the first line of the second paragraph, I heard the
second line of that first paragraph.

Am I doing something wrong or misunderstanding something?

I would like to get this strait, because I am trying to make sure that I know
exactly what I am getting with each command

Many thanks for any help!

Hi,

I open a PDF like my monthly bank statement from my banks site, then I save it
as a .txt file.

I'm using Adobe 11 and Jaws 16. So what I do is, when the PDF is open on site,
I press Alt F, then arrow down to other and enter there, it pops up save
as...and the *accessible .txt is highlighted. I give it a name, but it's not
necessary to do this, then press Alt S to save, it goes right to my documents
on my windows 7 system.

Go to this PC. Then, select your C drive, and hit, alt enter, and tab twice.
You should hear disk clean up. Then, hit enter, and it will take a few
minutes, and then, present you, with choices to clean up or not. Check the
ones you want to be cleaned, and tab over to ok. Jim

Hi Carolyn,

I do believe that half of your statement is true, though I'm not sure if you
should quote me on that.

The Defragmentation service is true, as Windows 10 keeps your hard drive
defragged constantly so as to maximize the storage space and it's
information retrieval.

In terms of the Disk clean up, I don't believe this has been automated in
Windows 10, but as of Windows 8.1, disk clean up is still a manual task,
though, I suppose that you can automate it by setting it as a scheduled task
once a week, or so, but again, you can always set Internet Explorer to empty
temporary internet files automatically once you finish browsing. That has
always been in the Internet Explorer settings, but in terms of emptying out
your recycle bin, or cleaning up dump files and/or log files, those you must
do manually, since the computer can never know which ones you want to delete
and which ones you don't.

Like I said above though, I may be incorrect in this statement, to please
take it with a grain of salt, as I am not officially using Windows 10 yet,
as it has not been reported ready for my computer.

Good luck.

Hi Dave,

There actually used to be a cheat sheet located in the advanced tab of the
system properties in Windows XP, but alas, they've done away with it, and I
don't know where to obtain it anymore.

This command was part of the list of commands that included the IP release
and renew commands for your internet, the check disk and disk defrag and
other useful utilities that were, and still are, as you can see, useful back
in the day.

In any case, perhaps someone with an XP computer can pull up the system
properties with Windows key+pause, then control Tab to the advanced tab, or,
at least, that's what I think it was called, and copy those commands down
for us.

Unfortunately, all of my computers are Windows 7 and up. LOL.

Hi, You can press Windows key+R to get the run dialog box, then, in the run
edit field, type in control userpasswords2, without the quotes, and press
enter.

In the resulting dialog box, uncheck the box that says, users must type a
password to use this computer, and make sure it's unchecked.

Tab to the ok button, and press enter or the spacebar.

You'll receive a dialog box prompting you to select the default user and to
enter the password associated with that user.

Once you select and type in the default username and password, tab to the ok
button, and press the spacebar.

At this point, you can close the userpasswords2 dialog box, if it's still
open, or unless you want to make more advanced modifications in one of the
other tabs, and from that point onwards, it should boot directly into the
desktop.

Keep in mind that if you have User Control turned on, it will prompt you to
press the yes button if you want to allow the action.

Good luck.

hybernation is prone to failing more often than sleep, although it is
safer than sleep when leaving the computer for an extended amount of time.

I would close any open programs, unless the program is running a
process, like a cleanup, and letting the computer do it's thing. chances
are, it will go to sleep after the process is finished, in which, you'd
have to press any key to wake the computer up.

No, that is not correct.
You can still do disk cleanup.
You can still defragment and optimize your drive in w-10.
You should do these on a regular basis or schedule them.

Hi,

I have 2 computers one is running IE 11, so I just now went to my bank and
the E statements.
so here's what I did..
I clicked on July statement and Adobe 11 loaded it, I was able to read it
online no trouble.

But when I wanted to save it as accessible *.txt* because there was no
other submenu in the Alt F menu.
I had to let it save as the *PDF and whatever the file name it gave, maybe
the file name could be changed as long as the .PDF extension was left.
so it save and went to My docs. Then I entered on it there, it opened it
again, I heard jaws announce processing page 1 of 3..

after it finished, I was reading it same as it was presented online at my
bank. Then, the other submenu was available after I press, Alt F, then I
saved it as a *.txt* file.
But Jaws read the PDF online and when I saved it in the original form it
saved online. so I guess it's up to you if you choose to rename it for
clearification or not.

Re: [JAWS-Users] alt+D

2015-08-27 Thread jim

Hi Kevin:
I think it is this jump list setting which is causing the problem.
After unchecking it and restarting your computer, you should have access to
your email links.

For example, before I unchecked it.
After using Skype, I went to the taskbar, press applications key.
I could not find quit Skype, it was not one of the choices.
Again, after unchecking this item, and restarting my computer.
All works again on the taskbar.
There are still a few areas where F S needs to tweak a bit, but over all
very good so far.
I have been spending time looking and changing different settings, to see
which settings work best with Jaws 16.

I just helped some one download and install and set up a WLM account with no

There is a setting interfering with this somewhere.
Check this in personalization, then start.
Show recently opened items and jump list on start or the taskbar, uncheck

See if that makes a difference.

[JAWS-Users] JAWS 16 is not consistent when reading Word documents

2015-08-27 Thread Tanja Kleut
Hi all,

I'm using JAWS 16.4350 on my work and I have the following problem:
when I'm focused in a word document and when I'm reading the content
with up or down arrow (and when PC cursor is active) JAWS for a
strange reason sometimes is repeting parts of the previous line. This
is really confusing and I cannot read smoothly any text in Word with
this problem. The window is maximized.
I have also the version 15.0.11024 installed on my computer and this
doesn't happen with that version.
Does it happen to others here on the list?
What could be the problem?
This is happening only in Word documents, not with txt, pdf, html or
excel documents.

Many thanks in advance for any suggestion!

Tanja

Re: [JAWS-Users] trouble with downloading PDF documents on webpages

2015-08-27 Thread Trish
Hi,

I have 2 computers one is running IE 11, so I just now went to my bank and the
E statements.
so here's what I did..
I clicked on July statement and Adobe 11 loaded it, I was able to read it
online no trouble.

But when I wanted to save it as accessible *.txt* because there was no other
submenu in the Alt F menu.
I had to let it save as the *PDF and whatever the file name it gave, maybe the
file name could be changed as long as the .PDF extension was left.
so it save and went to My docs. Then I entered on it there, it opened it again,
I heard jaws announce processing page 1 of 3..

after it finished, I was reading it same as it was presented online at my bank.
Then, the other submenu was available after I press, Alt F, then I saved it
as a *.txt* file.
But Jaws read the PDF online and when I saved it in the original form it saved
online. so I guess it's up to you if you choose to rename it for clearification
or not.

[JAWS-Users] Amazon site and product details

2015-08-27 Thread Alan Robbins
Hey gang,

I used to be able to review additional info about a product
with JAWS on the amazon site by going to links and then
product details. That link is no longer available so
obviously they have changed it or called it something else.
Last time I was on the site I found what they called it and
went to it for additional info. Today I can't seem to find
or remember. Anyone help out here?

Best,

[JAWS-Users] Printing envelope, MS Word 2013

2015-08-27 Thread Neil Towery
Hello Gang:

I can print an envelope perfectly. However, I have a slight problem.

I cannot get JAWS to read the delivery address or return address, in the
printing process.

Here is what I do and what I hear:

1. Have a word document with the address.

2. Get the cursor in the middle of the address.

3. Alt plus the letter M. I hear: upper ribbon mailings tab

4. Strike the letter E, for envelope. I hear: Delivery Address edit.
However, it does not read out loud the address. Nor can I arrow up or down
and hear anything.

Tab to the return address. I hear: Return address edit. It does not read
out loud the return address nor can I arrow through it.

Tab to the print button, and strike the space bar. The envelope prints
precisely.

So, my bottom line question is how do I get JAWS to read the mailing
address and return address? Using JAWS 16.4350 and MS Word 2013.

Thanks. Neil Towery

You are going to have to use the JAWS cursor in there.
Good old Microsoft has made it so that that area does not read with JAWS.
In the FS Word training Dan Clark, ever the optimist, says, and we cannot
get JAWS to tell us what is in there, we are hoping Microsoft will fix that
soon.

Hi.
I just verified that 3 out of the 4 screen readers that I tried have the
same problem.
The only one that could read the delivery and return addresses is System
Access.
Jaws 15 and Jaws 16, WindowEyes 9.2, and NVDA 2015.2 could not read those
fields.

I read somewhere that it is supposed to be a known Microsoft Word 2013
problem, and not a screen reader problem.
But, then why can System access read the fields?
Very puzzling.

The trick is to adjust your fonts on the Delivery address while in Word

I just verified that you will land before the first letter of the first word

No, I have not tried to use the JAWS cursor. I had hoped there was a check
box somewhere that would do the job! Will try the JAWS cursor, even though
it adds a step. May just trust it.

You are going to have to use the JAWS cursor in there.
Good old Microsoft has made it so that that area does not read with JAWS.
In the FS Word training Dan Clark, ever the optimist, says, and we cannot
get JAWS to tell us what is in there, we are hoping Microsoft will fix that
soon.

Re: [JAWS-Users] [Bulk] Re: [Bulk] Re: desktop

2015-08-27 Thread Scorpio Forever

HI Jim,

I'm afraid this isn't correct.

If you press alt+enter on the This PC icon, this will bring up the system
properties, in which case, you have to tab to system tools, press enter,
then tab to disk clean up, where you can choose which drive you wish to run
the disk clean up wizard on.

An easier way of accomplishing this task is to open up This PC, then arrow
to the drive you wish to run a disk clean up on, and press alt+enter. This
will bring up the drive's properties, then tabbing to the disk clean up
button, you can press the spacebar, and the wizard will automatically scan
your drive for unnecessary files to be deleted.

I can't remember if it will delete cookies and the like, as I think you'll
have to go into Internet Options for that, but at least you'll be able to
delete temporary internet files and Windows temp files and such like.

I should also point out that when you have the drive's properties opened, a
press of control+tab will take you to the tools page of the drive where you
can run a scan disk, a defrag and a back-up, depending on your preference.

Good luck.

LOL.

[JAWS-Users] Printing Envelopes

2015-08-27 Thread Gerald Levy

Hi listers.
On my “new” Windows 7 PC, I am using Jarte as my word processing program of
choice, but I can’t figure out how to set it up without sighted help to print
envelopes. Does anyone know of a free, stand-alone envelope printing program
that is accessible with JAWS? On my old XP PC, I used the Envelopes option in
MS Word 2007 to print envelopes, but I would like to avoid having to install
the entire, bloated MS Office suite on my new PC just for this purpose. I only
need to print an occasional envelope every once in a while, and never used MS
Office for any other purpose. Thanks.

Good luck.

Good luck.

I just verified in my Windows 7, Word 2013, and JAWS 16 and indeed your
description is right on the money.
The trick is to adjust your fonts on the Delivery address while in Word
and the same for your return address the first time before copying into the
windows/labels window.
I just verified that you will land before the first letter of the first word
in the first sentence in both windows and you can highlight the text using

Thanks. Neil Towery

Hi Dave,

There actually used to be a cheat sheet located in the
advanced tab of the system properties in Windows XP, but
alas, they've done away with it, and I don't know where to
obtain it anymore.

This command was part of the list of commands that included
the IP release and renew commands for your internet, the
check disk and disk defrag and other useful utilities that
were, and still are, as you can see, useful back in the day.

In any case, perhaps someone with an XP computer can pull up
the system properties with Windows key+pause, then control
Tab to the advanced tab, or, at least, that's what I think
it was called, and copy those commands down for us.

Unfortunately, all of my computers are Windows 7 and up.
LOL.

Very Cool! Had no idea this dialog existed, much less how to
find it. Is there a cheat sheet somewhere giving these
specific control commands and what they access?

Hi, You can press Windows key+R to get the run dialog box,
then, in the run edit field, type in control
userpasswords2, without the quotes, and press enter.

In the resulting dialog box, uncheck the box that says,
users must type a password to use this computer, and make
sure it's unchecked.

Tab to the ok button, and press enter or the spacebar.

You'll receive a dialog box prompting you to select the
default user and to enter the password associated with that
user.

Once you select and type in the default username and
password, tab to the ok button, and press the spacebar.

At this point, you can close the userpasswords2 dialog box,
if it's still open, or unless you want to make more
advanced modifications in one of the other tabs, and from
that point onwards, it should boot directly into the
desktop.

Keep in mind that if you have User Control turned on, it
will prompt you to press the yes button if you want to allow
the action.

Good luck.

Good idea, but that would still present the logon screen --

 HI Jim,

 I'm afraid this isn't correct.

If you press alt+enter on the This PC icon, this will bring up the
system properties, in which case, you have to tab to system tools,
press enter, then tab to disk clean up, where you can choose which
drive you wish to run the disk clean up wizard on.

An easier way of accomplishing this task is to open up This PC, then
arrow to the drive you wish to run a disk clean up on, and press
alt+enter. This will bring up the drive's properties, then tabbing to
the disk clean up button, you can press the spacebar, and the wizard
will automatically scan your drive for unnecessary files to be deleted.

I can't remember if it will delete cookies and the like, as I think
you'll have to go into Internet Options for that, but at least you'll
be able to delete temporary internet files and Windows temp files and such
like.

I should also point out that when you have the drive's properties
opened, a press of control+tab will take you to the tools page of the
drive where you can run a scan disk, a defrag and a back-up, depending on
your preference.

 Good luck.

 Hi Carolyn,

I do believe that half of your statement is true, though I'm not sure
if you should quote me on that.

The Defragmentation service is true, as Windows 10 keeps your hard
drive defragged constantly so as to maximize the storage space and
 it's information retrieval.

In terms of the Disk clean up, I don't believe this has been automated
in Windows 10, but as of Windows 8.1, disk clean up is still a manual
task, though, I suppose that you can automate it by setting it as a
scheduled task once a week, or so, but again, you can always set
Internet Explorer to empty temporary internet files automatically once
you finish browsing. That has always been in the Internet Explorer
settings, but in terms of emptying out your recycle bin, or cleaning
up dump files and/or log files, those you must do manually, since the
computer can never know which ones you want to delete and which ones you
don't.

Like I said above though, I may be incorrect in this statement, to
please take it with a grain of salt, as I am not officially using
Windows 10 yet, as it has not been reported ready for my computer.

 Good luck.
