I'll try to help. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WINDOWS 7 AND 8.1 Windows 8.1 doesn't have the same setup as Windows 7. There is no Start menu in the same configuration. Instead, when you press the Windows key, you go to a list of apps which are arranged in column format. You can still navigate to the Desktop by pressing WINDOWS+M or WINDOWS+D. It is still possible to move items onto the Desktop. However, many of the things you already have installed in your system will appear on the list as apps. I have Office 2010 for example and all of the separate programs are listed. To open one, all you have to do is navigate to it and press Enter. The Search capability in 8.1 is great! If you are on that list of apps, just start typing your search term and the system will automatically jump to the item if it is on the system. It will also show you documents pertaining to that item. Once you get into any of your applications, 8.1 doesn't behave any differently than Windows 7 did. It's faster, much faster than Windows 7. Accessing the Control Panel is a bhit more difficult because 8.1 divides the listings into groups sorted by their purpose. You can still reach the Programs and Features list, however. I believe that 8.1 was designed to be more attractive to those who would be using it on a portable device. There are some differences in the operations of 8.1 but essentially, it is a good operating system. Many people hate it, Fred. It took some getting used to for me but now, after working with it for a while, I find it so good that I'm in no hurry to upgrade to Windows 10. You were right about your older system not working with 10 by the way. It requires more head room than you probably have on that older system. I hope this helps. Hi Dave, Try the following to turn the Insert Key Mode on / off. This only works in the Settings Center Default All Applications. 1. Open the Settings Center in either of these 2 ways. A. Press, Insert / Jaws Key + 6, on the number row above the main keyboard. B. Press, Insert / Jaws Key + F2, to open the, Jaws Manager, arrow down, Settings Center, & press enter. After I manually updated this, the upgrade went through. his computer runs w-10 just fine now. I have made audio and txt files for my windows 10 and jaws yahoo group. Here is the steps for upgrading to W-10, which I have previously shared with the Jaws users list. *Upgrading to Windows 10 with jaws 16. go to: http://www.freedomscientific.com/Support/TechnicalSupport/Windows10Upgrade Download the tool called utility tool, leave it in your download folder. Download jaws 16.0.4350, leave it in your download folder for future use. Download the Microsoft media creation tool at: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 On this web page, Go to download link now 64 bit version or 32 bit version depending on what system you have. Download the tool and save it to your download folder for future use. Leave all three of these downloads in your download folder. Now, if you have not reserved windows 10, please do so. press enter on the get windows 10 icon in the notification area. go down the page and fill in your email address ext. this gives you a verification email. Now, restart your computer. check for updates, install any updates, restart to make sure you have all the latest updates. Now you are ready to begin the upgrade to windows 10. Run the jaws utility tool, this will get rid of any jaws fragmented files and so on from your system. Run the media creation tool. yes, for your users account warning. Choose, update this computer now and press enter. you are now in an ongoing and updating dialog which says: Windows 10 is being downloaded, continue using your computer. This could take anywhere between 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your download speed. When it is done downloading, it will go through several screens itself updating your computer and will get it ready for windows 10. Next, there will be a screen asking you to except the license agreement, check the yes and press enter on next. Again, the program will run through several screens by itself. Next, press enter on install. now you will have no speech, this install takes 45 to 60 minutes to complete. After 1 hour, press the Windows key+enter key to turn on narrator. Wait for a few minutes if it does not come on right away. Almost done. press the next button. choose express settings. press the next button. if done right, in about 10 to 15 minutes, jaws will come on talking on the desktop. very important, uninstall jaws. Keep shared settings and personal settings. Reinstall jaws, no need for a restart here, jaws will come on talking with all your settings, except for 2 of them. Redo your shortcut key, control+ALT+j. Redo the setting to have jaws come on at the log-on screen. For whatever reason if the media tool fails the first time. Check for updates, restart your computer. Check to see if a graphics card driver update is available. Re: [JAWS-Users] doing a repair on Jaws
Hi Troy, Below are 2 ways of repairing Jaws: The steps below are the best, most in depth, and most thorough way of repairing Jaws according to Freedom Scientific Tech Support. Note; jaws11 is the example, however, this will work for 12, 13, 14, & 15 as well. 1. Place a copy of the Jaws executible version that you want to repair into the main root of the " C " drive. For example; If you are running Jaws11 most recent you would paste a copy of " J11.0.1430-32bit.exe " into the main root of the " C " drive. To open the main root of the " C " drive, go to the desktop, press enter on My Computer, press enter on Local disk C, and now you have the main root of the " C " drive open. 2. With the Jaws " .exe " pasted into the "C" drive, highlight the " .exe ", and press F2 as if you were going to edit this line of text. now press control + C to copy this Jaws executible, press escape to close the edit field, and press Alt + F4 to close the C drive. What you want to do is place just the title of the Jaws version into the Windows Run Dialogue box and not the file. If you were to place the Jaws executible into the Run box without copying as you did as per the instructions above you would have pasted the whole file into the Run Box instead of just the title. 3. Now that you have just the title copied to the clipboard, press Windows key + R to open the Run Dialogue Box. Type, remember to type a capitalC ," C:\ " without the quotes or spaces and press control + V to paste the Jaws title, press your end key to take the cursor to the end of the title and type in the following " /type repair" without the quotes but, with the spaces . Below is what your line of text should look / read like. C:\J11.0.1447-32bit.exe /type repair Read character by character to make sure you have put in the proper spaces, Forward & back slashes and text. press the home key to go to the front of the title and press enter to start the repair. A 2nd way to do the same thing. From: Brian Lee Hello Jim, You might have already resolved the problem, but if not here is a link that you can use to download the newest update for your 64-bit installation of JAWS. Information about performing the repair is shown below after the download link. ftp://ftp.freedomscientific.com/users/hj/private/WebFiles/JAWS/J11.0.1430-64 bit.exe After downloading the file you can do the following steps to repair the installation: 1. Use Windows key with R to bring up the run dialog box. 2. Use tab key to the browse button and press spacebar. 3. Browse to the downloaded JAWS setup file and press enter key. 4. Use tab key to move to where JAWS says "open colon edit combo", press the end key and then press spacebar. 5. Type in /Type repair, (that is first type a slash followed immediately by the word type then a space and then the word repair. 6. Use tab key to the OK button and press enter key. 7. Follow the prompts. Take care. Brian Lee Take care. Mike This email was sent from my, iBarstool. [JAWS-Users] Using the Start button in W-10
For a better experience with using the Start button in windows 10. You should in the beginning turn off the two check boxes under, cortana and search settings. What happens when these two items are checked, under cortana and search settings. Whenever you do a search from the start button edit box. Dozens of internet results will be above your usual files and documents, and programs results, which you are used to seeing. This can be frustrating, especially when customizing your new w-10 computer. You think you are entering on a certain file, but instead you are taken to a bing, search results page on the internet by cortana. This happened to me many times on my own computer, and on other peoples computers who I was helping to customize for them. After setting up your w-10 computer, you can then play with these settings and get used to how they work. I hope this helps those of you who have been frustrated with this and have mentioned this issue to me. Re: [JAWS-Users] W 8.1 upgrade
When using the Microsoft media creation tool on an older windows 7 computer. Be patient, it may take you several times to complete the upgrade successfully. if and when the upgrade fails. Check for updates, restart your computer. Go, to device manager, check manually, for driver updates. I updated a friends older windows 7 computer, the one thing which was holding back the upgrade was a graphics card driver update. Run the Microsoft media creation tool again. -Original Message- From: Scorpio Forever Sent: Saturday, September 05, 2015 9:33 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] W 8.1 upgrade HI Kevin, I'm afraid this method does not work as I attempted it, and the preparation stalled at around 11 and 18%. I even tried to run the set up directly from the MSI file instead of going through the download tool, and got the same result. I'm afraid that the only way to do this is to do it the way I spoke about in my last message. I'm not quite sure why this is the case. I'm thinking that maybe there may be a piece of hardware that is installed on my computer that is so old, that the Windows 10 set up utility can't figure it out. Not saying this is the case, I'm just thinking out loud, and this is actually a working theory I've come up with. I'm going to actually uninstall the actual piece of hardware I have on my computer that is so old, even Windows is afraid to touch it with a 10 foot installer, LOL, and see what happens when I try the installer again. Oh, and just for your information, the piece of hardware is an old SoundBlaster Sound card that's giving me the trouble, I believe, so watch for an update tomorrow at some point. Re: [JAWS-Users] W 8.1 upgrade
Hi Fred, It looks as if some of our members didn't quite understand your questions. I am also having this issue, so it may be that the tech guy you spoke to is trying to pawn Windows 8.1 off on you because he knows he can't make any money if you upgrade to Windows 10.
