[JAWS-Users] Advice on creating accessible forms in Excel 2013
Hi, I'm using Excel 2013 with JAWS 16 and have a spreadsheet with lots of data in it that I use on a daily basis. I am using VBA to filter worksheets etc. I would like to create a front-end accessible GUI to allow me to enter new records and search for information quickly. How accessible are the form controls in Excel and are there some that are more accessible than others? And are there any tutorials on using the form designer with the keyboard in Excel? [JAWS-Users] google drive and onedrive
Greetings: I was able to install googledrive last night. I've also heard folks jumping all over onedrive. What is the difference between the two and why get one over the other? Is one more accessible than the other? I've never dealt with these before so excuse the dumb questions. So far, at least google drive, it's just like dropbox, where it's a copy and paste thing. OneDrive, I'm not sure because I can't ever get it to work. Part of it is passwords hahaha. I have so many passwords I forget which is for what. So many passwords for everything, pretty soon, my kids will not answer the door and just say "what's the password" after I knock. haha. Re: [JAWS-Users] google drive and onedrive
Hi. I don't believe google drive lets you synchronize a folder between two different accounts, so you and coworker or friend(s) can modify files and that be reflected for both places, one drive does, though it is a tad difficult to work out how to make it happen. Once it does, if I share a folder with you and you add it to your one drive desktop client, I can drop a file in on my end and it'll show up on your hard drive to copy and paste out or do with as you see fit, if you change it, it'll also change on my end. Dropbox and One Drive (as of recently) can do this, google drive as far as I am aware can't, please correct me if I'm wrong about google drive here, I'd like to be, looking for other options than Dropbox. Don't forget about bt sync, for best screen reader friendliness with bt sync you need bt sync 1.3.109 and disable auto updating. Bt sync doesn't have a storage limit since it just copies files directly from computer to computer that are in the folder in question, also with bt sync your folders can be anywhere. For instance you can share your documents folder if you want, though I'd say that might not be a very good idea depending on how much sensitive content is in your documents. BTSync is supposed to be pretty secure just like the others, but it doesn't store your files on a server anywhere, they just transmit directly from machine to machine. If you have a server that it synchronizes to, it's because you put some machine you dedicate to that task in the folder. My friends and I do that with dedicated servers, pretty slick. If anybody needs 1.3.109 of bt sync, here's a public link from, ironically, Dropbox https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1586962/BTSync%201.3.109.exe just don't let it update, because later versions are rather unfriendly to screen readers. Been using bt sync for quite a while now, quite happy with it. Back to one drive, the whole ability to put someone Else's shared folder into your own one drive desktop client so that you can collaborate more easily is new and only barely tested by myself, so I can't vouch too strongly about how well it works. I had no issues with it what little I have so far, though. One drive also is pretty screen reader friendly. Note that the one that is built into windows 8.1 is not the same as the one manually installed in windows 8.0 and 7, and the one that is built into windows 10 is again different. They all get the job done and can be used with jaws, though. Re: [JAWS-Users] KBD command in Excel to list all cells with drop down list or combo box
Rebooting computer, closing and restarting JAWS, closing and restarting Excel...none of these change JAWS announcement when it comes to automatically announcing presence of a drop down list/box in a cell when I arrow to it. For example one of the cells with the drop down has some text with a little graphic of an arrow to the right of the text in the same cell that the visual user mouse clicks to open the drop down. I have been told by the sighted person of the presence of this drop down in that cell so I can hit alt down-arrow to open it and then arrow up/down the opened drop down list and make my selection. The big problem though is that independently I am unable to even know of the presence of the drop down as JAWS does not announce the presence of a drop down when I land on that cell. When I navigate to a cell in Excel that is formatted for a dropdown list, JAWS does announce it most of the time. Sometimes I do have to close everything and reboot the computer, but this is to most often resolve the problem of JAWS not reading a number of things in Excel including cell contents with F2, and the contents of dropdown lists. As best as I can remember, even in the state of not reading cell content, JAWS still told me that the cell I was focused on was a dropdown list. Win8, JFW6, Office 2010. Is there a JAWS command in Excel that lists all cells in the worksheet containing a drop down list or combo box? JAWS command 'alt down-arrow' opens a drop down list or combo box if it exists in the cell in focus. Then I am able to arrow up and down the dropped list or combo box and hit enter on any of the choices to activate it. But JAWS does not announce the presence of such a drop down list or combo box in a cell as you navigate around from cell to cell using the arrow keys making it impossible to become aware of such a drop down list or combo box. With respect to objects, tis problem does not exist as JAWS has the keystroke combo 'ctrol shift O' that lists all the objects and their respective cell in the worksheet in focus. Is there a similar command for JAWS to list all the cells in a worksheet that contain a drop down list or combo box? Re: [JAWS-Users] captcha and Firefox and internet explorer
I have it but no way to use it since I never received a code name or password, so anything I enter tells me it is incorrect. Besides, I doubt that I'd know how to use it if I could get in, I would have a year ago maybe but lately nothing here works like it should. My laptop still has stuff I can't remove from a job that we agreed was not working for me, I removed all programs but. My desktop has been sort of mixed up since my late husband passed and a cousin tried to fix it, files never seem to be where they should be, searches work or they do not. So have two computers and neither are quite like the one I had in 2013 that died. I truly am afraid to do Windows 10 with no one here, I can do most of what I need, e-mail most websites, except PayPal where I don't remember the password since it made me try about 20 times before I got one, none of what I have tried works and to change it requires a CAPTCHA which I have not been able to hear or remember long enough to get it put where it should be. I hate PayPal, CAPTCHAS and I am not particularly fond of Firefox either, it does not follow the usual conventions, book marks are often not accessible, it freezes usually when I am trying to do something important like looking at my bank stuff or just as I am checking out of a shopping site. Life sucks, my computers suck some days. Retirement is not all it was cracked up to be, especially alone. So unless you can say something truly helpful that is not call someone, sit on hold listing to music that literally makes my good ear ache after a time, or tell me about an ad in that has been totally uncooperative, please just forget I ever asked a question. Written instructions would be most appreciated, I never give out my phone numbers on an e-mail list so privately ask or tell me what you can offer, still written would be most helpful for me. Re: [JAWS-Users] very important verify your ms account with w-10
No, different accounts. When I was on the phone with Microsoft support, they did a 30 minute scan to check the Windows installation files. It automatically fixed some of them, the others are to show up in windows updates. As soon as my wife gets done using the laptop, I will check for updates and try using narrator again, at least narrator sees this window correctly. It is not anything we are doing, this is a Microsoft problem. Because with narrator, I can see everything, and I can even change the combo-box, to verify by email. But when I try I get an error saying to refresh, request did not go through. So, I will let you know how it turns out. So, for everyone else, I would use narrator on this window, works very well. -Original Message- From: anna vimini Sent: Friday, October 02, 2015 3:21 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] very important verify your ms account with w-10 are you using the same ms account on both your lab top and your desk top computer maybe that is the reason you can not verify your account on your lab top What I am trying to say if your using the same ms account on your desk top and your lab top the account is already verified . just a thought Re: [JAWS-Users] Very important, verifying your M S account in w-10 Narrator, my wife, myself, Microsoft, can not verify. Re: [JAWS-Users] Very important, verifying your M S account in w-10
This is what I was trying to say the other day. We all have differing experiences with our computers for whatever reason. The other day I couldn't find, no matter how hard I tried, to find that security fix for my W 10 laptop. Today I don't have the problem of having to verify my laptop. This is why we need to be patient with one another and give each other room to ask questions even if they have been asked before. [JAWS-Users] Verification problem fixed for MS account in w-10
Yes, we finally solved the problem. When I was talking to Microsoft support, the Tech. ran a Windows installation file check troubleshooter, which took about 30 minutes to complete. It found some corrupted installations files, it fixed some, and the Tech. told me that Windows update would fix the rest. So, after checking for updates, and restarting my computer to install the new updates. I pressed Win+I, for Settings. Pressed enter on account. Turned off Jaws. Pressed Win+enter, to turn narrator on. Tabbed to the choose how the verification code is sent combo-box. I Pressed ALT+down arrow to open. I chose by email. I tabbed to confirm email, typed in the email. I tabbed to the Next button, pressed enter. An email was sent with the code. I typed the code into the code verification edit field. I tabbed to the next button, pressed enter, I was done. So, definitely use narrator, narrator had no trouble with this window. So, the problem was corrupted windows files, it was nothing wrong that we were doing. So, if you do not have, sighted assistance, use narrator and follow my above instructions, and you should be just fine. [JAWS-Users] spell check in windows live mail 2011
I find that in windows live mail 2011 in spell check settings, when I uncheck “The original text in a reply or forward” Jaws still spell checks the replied to or forwarded document. It seems to me that when this setting is unchecked, Jaws should spell check only the main document. Is there any solution to this problem? [JAWS-Users] attachments
yes it helped but I had to go to the tools menu and then arrow down to options then press enter the dialogue came up which was the options dialogue then I arrowed over to Composition then tabbed once and landed on the general tab then I tabbed a couple of more times until I landed on check for missing attachments then unchecked it and then tabbed down to okay. so it is actually tools, options, composition, general then tab to check for missing attachments uncheck then tab to okay but I new what you meant Re: [JAWS-Users] attachments Hi Anna, tools, display, general, tab to where it says look for missing attachments and uncheck. tab to ok and activate. Re: [JAWS-Users] Very important, verifying your M S account in w-10
It would seem that the sign-in screen is not accessible either, as I just came from there, and couldn't read a thing with it. My OCR commands yielded nothing in terms of interactions, nor did the Jaws cursor. Having said that though, I did have sighted assistance in the form of my wife, and it would seem that even though Jaws wasn't reading anything on the page, the keyboard was still entering information on the page. The problem, of course, is that we don't know what field we're in and what information to place in those fields unless you have sighted assistance. One thing I did not have to do was Verify my account. It might be because I did not set up a Pin code, but either way, this was not a step I had to hurdle in order to get it to use my account. Re: [JAWS-Users] KBD command in Excel to list all cells with drop down list or combo box
Is your Excel window maximized? Annette -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Dujari, Prateek Sent: Friday, October 02, 2015 12:28 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] KBD command in Excel to list all cells with drop down list or combo box Rebooting computer, closing and restarting JAWS, closing and restarting Excel...none of these change JAWS announcement when it comes to automatically announcing presence of a drop down list/box in a cell when I arrow to it. Re: [JAWS-Users] spell check in windows live mail 2011
try upgrading wlm here's the link to the latest version I think it's 2012! http://filehippo.com/download_windows_live_mail/ -Original Message- From: Peter Tighe Sent: Friday, October 2, 2015 3:00 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] spell check in windows live mail 2011 I find that in windows live mail 2011 in spell check settings, when I uncheck “The original text in a reply or forward” Jaws still spell checks the replied to or forwarded document. It seems to me that when this setting is unchecked, Jaws should spell check only the main document. Is there any solution to this problem? Re: [JAWS-Users] Verification problem fixed for MS account in w-10
Dear friends, I have managed to sign in and verify my account but since then whenever I try to login my system, it asks password of email address of my Microsoft account. I've just updated my system from windows 7 to windows 10. Please let me know that is it possible for me to login my system without giving any password just like before? Rose, I'm sorry to hear that you are having so much trouble! Things do seem to come in batches sometimes. [JAWS-Users] d2l follow up
I emailed about this weeks ago, a fella responded, but since I got stupid and messed with my email, I lost his. Anyways, I got a response from someone at the college concerning d2l and it's level of success and accessibility. Read on. Dear Kimsan, Thank you for your email and interest in the VIL program. Thank you for being so proactive and researching accessibilty at PSU. Throughout the program's history, we have had numerous students who are blind successfully complete the program. D2L is accessible using JAWS but some students who are blind have reported that it is not user friendly. There are some tips and tricks for navigating the system. In addition, I and other faculty in the program are working diligently on making the courses more accessible for those who use screen readers. Below is a link to information about D2L and its accessibility. https://documentation.desire2learn.com/en/Accessibility The Disability Resource Center will be a valuable resource for you and I suggest you connect with their office sooner than later to express your concerns. While staff do not provide training in how to access D2L, they can help with some trouble shooting. http://www.pdx.edu/drc/ Kimsan Song kimsans...@charter.net For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
