Also using Open Book 9.0. Is that compatible with windows 10? How about

Just because it's not being supported anymore, doesn't make it any less of a

Is there any reason people are stopping it's use?

Just curious because if I'm missing something, then maybe I should stop

Second question, what are rapsody and spotify? Does one work better than the

Besides the fact that actual tech professionals from both Dell and HP
continue to recommend waiting to upgrade to Windows 10 there really is no
reason to upgrade if you don't have to. If Windows 7 or 8.1 works then don't

[JAWS-Users] Insert key stopped working

2015-11-25 Thread wayne smith
Hello-

This is a new one for me. When I use the insert/Jaws key it no longer does
the Jaws commands associated with it. For example, if I do Insert plus T to
learn the window I am in it only says T. I don't know if I accidently put
in a command to change things. This just started. Using JAWS 14 with
Windows 7.

Happy Thanksgiveing,

Thanks to all that made recommendations. Price being the main force, I
decided on a special black Friday hp for wal-mart. Although a basic model it

I only will use it for email, internet and MS word. Later maybe watching a

[JAWS-Users] Apparently Google Chrome doesn't support importing bookm arks from Firefox.

2015-11-25 Thread Flor Lynch
Hi,
was able to import all of my Favorites from Internet Explorer – including
those from my XP machine that went south last December (probably thanks to an
iPhone app that picked up my Favorites from it), but not Firefox (at least on
my present desktop; and, perhaps, not Internet Explorer 11 here either?) I’ll
confess to not yet having listened to David Moore’s audio tutorial. Hopefully
there’s a way to get Google Chrome to recognize all of your other seriously
used browsers, and import from each of them.

Re: [JAWS-Users] music stuff and more.

2015-11-25 Thread Mike B
Howdy Kimsan,

Here you go! A Happy& safe Thanksgiving to all!

From: Scorpio Forever
I wrote this tutorial up some time ago for someone else, and, given the
currently circulating thread of Winamp playlists, I thought I would post it.

Basically, it deals with creating and managing playlists using Winamp and
Jaws.

I'm sure there are no end of ways to create and manage playlists, so, keep
in mind that the below instructions are of my own method, and I've been
using the below method for quite some time.

Hope people get a use out of it.

***Begin Tutorial***

Believe it or not, it's easier to create a playlist with Winamp, than it
sounds.

First, go to your desktop, or where ever you keep the Winamp shortcut, and
enter on it.

Once the Winamp window opens, control+tab twice to get to the playlist
editor.

If you find that you've used the control+tab keystroke twice, and Jaws
didn't say playlist editor, then that means you have the playlist editor
closed.

You can open it in one of two ways.

You can press the keystroke of alt+E, or you can press alt+F, then arrow
down to playlist editor and enter on it.

I think you'll find the alt+E keystroke is easier. Smile.

In any case, once Jaws reports that the playlist editor is opened,
control+tab up to the playlist editor.

Now, this is going to sound weird, but go with me on this.

Once you land in the playlist editor, press control+A to highlight
everything, then press delete.

Don't worry if Jaws doesn't say anything, what you've essentially done is
delete any tracks that were in there from the last time you used Winamp to
listen to something.

Unfortunately, Winamp likes to leave residual ghost images of files it's
played in the last instance, and so, in order to create a clean playlist,
you have to delete what was previously there.

So, now that you've done that, press the letter L for lists, and this will
open up an open dialog box.

Those of you familiar with downloading from send space, or saving as and the
like, will be familiar with this dialog box.

When this dialog box opens, you'll land on the filename edit box. Do a
shift+tab to go to the file list window just above the filename edit box.

Now, depending on where you last took Winamp, you won't know where you'll be
in the file list, so a good rule of thumb is to press the backspace key
seven or eight times until Jaws stops talking.

When he does, do a say line command with insert+up arrow, and Jaws should
read out, "Not Selected My Documents".

This means you're on your desktop, and you can now go to the folder where
the files are that you want to play.

So, if the files are in a folder three levels deep into your my documents
folder, let's call it Thea's audio files, you would press the spacebar to
select My Documents, press the enter key to go into that folder, then arrow
or find the folder titled Thea's Personal Files, highlight it, then press
enter.

Once in that folder, find the next folder, called Thea in Hawaii, enter on
it, and finally go to Thea's audio files, and press enter.

Be careful here, you don't want to make a common mistake that everyone
makes, even me before I realized it, smile, do not touch any of the arrow
keys, or the spacebar key, or anything on your keyboard until you've done a
select all with control+A, and I'll explain later.

Once you've done the control+A, tab to the open button in the dialog box,
and press the spacebar to allow Winamp to place all the files you just
selected into the playlist.

There is an even easier way to create a playlist, if you aren't selective
about what it is you're wanting to play, in other words, if you're not
actually trying to create a playlist for a party, or just want some music
playing in the background while you're cleaning house, or a book playing
while you're knitting or something like that, you can just go to your
desktop, without opening Winamp, navigate to the folder where the music
files are that you wish to play, now, this could be a music album, or an
audio book of some kind, and highlight it without going into the folder.

Once you do this, press your applications key, which is generally the first
key to the left of the right control key (*keep in mind your keyboard
configuration my be different from other configurations*), and arrow down to
"Play in Winamp", or press the letter P for playlist, and Winamp will open
up and start playing the tracks in the folder from the beginning, and in
alphabetic order. If you wish to add more folders to the playlist, simply
pause the playback of the playlist you just started playing, alt+tab back
to the window where your files were located, and navigate to the folder
where the other files are located that you wish to add to the playlist. One
might do this if they wish to listen to an entire catalogue of an artist
like Led Zepplin or Eric Clapton, or an entire series of books, like the
Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling, arrow down to

Re: [JAWS-Users] WIN 10 upgrade advice from our computer people

2015-11-25 Thread Flor Lynch
No need to be defensive! There are still several months during which it's
freely available. Tech consultants aren't saying that you shouldn't upgrade.
They're saying that most people would do well to wait a few months before
doing so. The more one learns, the better equippped one is tohandunforeseen
situations that may arise (for one reason or another). To some people, their
printers and scanners are important tools so they may need to tread
cautiously before trying to upgrade with them and/or get replacements that
will work as well.

Besides the fact that actual tech professionals from both Dell and HP
continue to recommend waiting to upgrade to Windows 10 there really is no
reason to upgrade if you don't have to. If Windows 7 or 8.1 works then
don't
break what is not already broken. I have very successfully helped install
Windows 10 as both upgrades and as clean installs on new machines and
while

it is a good Operating Machine there is issues of accessibility that both
Microsoft and all the major screen readers are continuing to work out.
That

is not a negative on any company it is a fact based on a very deep
understanding of computers as an instructor, programmer, and writer of
tutorials since 1984.
Never mind the fact that many people are upgrading only to find that they
have printers, scanners, external hard drives, and other peripherals that
will no longer be supported under Windows 10. Not everyone learns at the
same level. And not everyone can afford to replace outdated hardware
just to
scan their electric bill after they get a nasty surprise from an upgrade.
I have my machines working just great on Windows 10 and for the record I
used Windows 10 the Missing Manual via bookshare. I even got my windows 7
sound scheme working on a machine I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows
10

with a little bit of geeking and tweaking.
And I highly recommend that if you do not need to upgrade this minute,
wait
a few months to upgrade to Windows 10. Unless you are buying a new
machine.

Then by all means get a Windows 10 machine with at least 16 GB of ram and
run Jaws 17 and it will rock your world.

They need some different consultants.
Windows 10 works great with Jaws 16 latest, and with Jaws 17.

fine on your computer.

Of Corse, there are always exceptions to any computer update.
But this continued panicking about w-10, I can't understand it.
I and other users of Jaws, have been using w-10, for four months now.
I love it, it is a far superior computer system...

They need some different consultants.
Windows 10 works great with Jaws 16 latest, and with Jaws 17.
This is one of those fear letters and worry groups.
Yes, you will have a little, learning to do, but everything will be just
fine on your computer.

I have helped many people upgrade with no issues.
A w-7, computer sometimes will take using the media creation tool, two times
or so.

Because, it needs to update all the older w-7 drivers.
A w-8.1, computer, upgrades the first time.
But if a person follows my guide, they should be OK.
Of Corse, there are always exceptions to any computer update.
But this continued panicking about w-10, I can't understand it.
I and other users of Jaws, have been using w-10, for four months now.
I love it, it is a far superior computer system...

Love God! with your heart, mind, and soul, that you might be blessed

Love your Neighbor as you would yourself, God will truly reward you with
good health.
Love God, your neighbor, as you love yourself, you will then be spiritually

[JAWS-Users] laptop computer win 7

2015-11-25 Thread Lenny McHugh
I just called a very small family computer repair and sales shop. I was
curious to see what they may have in stock to compare to the Hp at staples.
They have an older new laptop with windows 7 home. It is an Asus x550a I3,
4gb ram and a T-byte system for $250.
Wonder if it will work ok with jaws.
He highly recommended that I stay away from win 10. He has about 15
computers on the shelf to have win 10 removed and a few more coming into the
shop.
He also stated that there was something on the news that windows 10 tracks
you. That was on the morning news.

What works well for you may not necessarily work well for somebody else.
When my sighted techie friend attempted to upgrade his Windows 7 desktop PC
to Windows 10, the upgrade failed and he was forced to roll back to Win 7.
So results may vary from system to system, and for most blind Windows
users, especially those who do not have tech-savvy sighted help on hand to
bail them out, it is probably advisable to wait awhile before upgrading to
Windows 10.

Re: [JAWS-Users] WIN 10 upgrade advice from our computer people

2015-11-25 Thread Merv Keck
Besides the fact that actual tech professionals from both Dell and HP
continue to recommend waiting to upgrade to Windows 10 there really is no
reason to upgrade if you don't have to. If Windows 7 or 8.1 works then don't
break what is not already broken. I have very successfully helped install
Windows 10 as both upgrades and as clean installs on new machines and while
it is a good Operating Machine there is issues of accessibility that both
Microsoft and all the major screen readers are continuing to work out. That
is not a negative on any company it is a fact based on a very deep
understanding of computers as an instructor, programmer, and writer of
tutorials since 1984.
Never mind the fact that many people are upgrading only to find that they
have printers, scanners, external hard drives, and other peripherals that
will no longer be supported under Windows 10. Not everyone learns at the
same level. And not everyone can afford to replace outdated hardware just to
scan their electric bill after they get a nasty surprise from an upgrade.
I have my machines working just great on Windows 10 and for the record I
used Windows 10 the Missing Manual via bookshare. I even got my windows 7
sound scheme working on a machine I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10
with a little bit of geeking and tweaking.
And I highly recommend that if you do not need to upgrade this minute, wait
a few months to upgrade to Windows 10. Unless you are buying a new machine.
Then by all means get a Windows 10 machine with at least 16 GB of ram and
run Jaws 17 and it will rock your world.

I am currently using winamp as my music program. But, since it’s no longer

Second question, what are rapsody and spotify? Does one work better than the

Any help would be appreciated.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws crash/pause update

2015-11-25 Thread Alan Robbins
Hello list,

Well I just got off the phone with a senior Jaws
escalation specialist. He called to get additional
information on the Jaws crashing and/or pausing issues some
of us are having with Jaws 16 and/or 17 and Windows 7 and/or
10. I know we have had several folks speaking of some or all
of the above. Unfortunately only myself and one other person
has reported this to Freedom Scientific as far as he knows
of.

The purpose of this post is to urge anyone having this issue
(all or part) to contact Freedom Scientific by phone or
email to report this issue. This will generate a case number
and the team can then try to get at some similarities to
begin to debug the issue. Again, and this has been said many
times, if you don't report issues to freedom scientific and
only do so on the list, remedies will not be made. So, you
can let me know on list or off if you report.

Best,

Al

is what I had to do from here. Go back on line to your Gmail account on the
Google page. Go to your in box. You will have a message that you will want
to press enter on. The message will say that WLM does not pass Google's
security standards, because Google does this for all clients, even Outlook.
In this message, there is a link to enter on that says to ignore this and
except your client. After you press enter, find where you need to press
space bar. It will say except my client anyway. After you press space bar on
that, close your on line Gmail account. Go back into WLM and re-enter your
email address and password again. This time, finally, it will except your
information. You

see, Google is set to reject any client. So this is what you have to do, but
after you get through this, your Gmail account will import into WLM and all
will be well. Please ask me if you have anymore questions. Take care and
have a great one.

Go you at least have the Live Mail installed onto the PC yet?

Hi all,

I have had Win 10 on a desktop now for almost 2 months. I have tried every
way possible that I can think of to get Live mail on it with my g mail

I am trying to get it all put together like my laptop so that I can start
learning 10 but can't get mail on it.

If someone could give directions before I throw this thing out the window it
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kurt

Re: [JAWS-Users] WIN10 upgrade advice from our computer people

2015-11-25 Thread DJ Reese
I notice everyone's situation is different when it comes to upgrading to
Windows 10 so its best you do your homework before taking the plunge.

My all-in one printer is 4 years old so got to find out if there's a Windows
10 driver available. I would hate to upgrade only to find out I have to go
out and purchase a new one.

Also using Open Book 9.0. Is that compatible with windows 10? How about
Microsoft Office 2007? These are my issues that is holding me back from
upgrading to Windows 10.

[JAWS-Users] music stuff and more.

2015-11-25 Thread Bobb Wiley
I have a couple of questions which may or may not be related, or even
relevant. I am running windows 7 and jaws 16.

I am currently using winamp as my music program. But, since it’s no longer
supported I’m thinking of using something else. I have VLC on my computer,
and it works fairly well, but I miss the enhancements that jaws scripts give
to winamp. I also have a copy of windows media player on my hard drive, but
I hate it with a passion, but I might be talked into updating it and trying
it again. So any recommendations for a replacement for winamp?

Second question, what are rapsody and spotify? Does one work better than the
other with jaws?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.
Bob

[JAWS-Users] Chrome & Jaws 17

2015-11-25 Thread Mike B
Howdy All,

When using Chrome & Jaws 17 if you press the, Alt key, this will open a menu
list of options / settings, for lack of a better term. When you arrow down
this list pressing enter or right arrowing into another list of options will
usually work but, with Jaws 17 pressing enter on the, Settings option,
doesn't work like it does with Jaws 16 If you want to access the, Settings
option, arrow up / down to it, & turn the virtual cursor off with the,
Insert / Jaws Key + Z, keystroke, & press enter You will now be able to tab
through the settings options. If you are on the, Settings option, you can
also press enter on it, then immediately turn the virtual cursor off , which
will also allow you to tab through the settings options.
HTH
Take care.

Hi Wayne,

Reboot the computer & see if this problem persists. Many times a reboot
will fix such problems.
Take care.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Insert key stopped working

Hello-

This is a new one for me. When I use the insert/Jaws key it no longer does
the Jaws commands associated with it. For example, if I do Insert plus T to
learn the window I am in it only says T. I don't know if I accidently put
in a command to change things. This just started. Using JAWS 14 with
Windows 7.

Happy Thanksgiveing,

Waybne
