Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and Microsoft edge
Yes, this is why I'm still avoiding edge. All this entering navigation, exiting navigation stuff is annoying. Is there any way to make it less verbose? -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List On Behalf Of Kevin Lee Sent: May 19, 2018 7:14 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] jaws and Microsoft edge It seems that with the recent build of jaws and the windows 10 spring creators update Microsoft edge has gotten usable with jaws. Jaws still says too much in edge Like entering navigation, and exiting navigation But I can put up with that as long as edge doesn’t unexpectably stop working like with internet explorer! Re: [JAWS-Users] Superscript in Word 2016
Hi, Fernando. Your instructions are absolutely correct. The only difference is that the English version gives "1st" as the ordinal example. I had it checked already, and it seems to be working for me. My confusion arose because I couldn't get JAWS to confirm that superscript letters were, in fact, superscript. As Rebecca posted, the problem arises from VFO's decision to remove superscript and subscript from the classic speech and sounds scheme. Strangely, although I've restored them to my default speech and sounds scheme, JAWS is still not verbalizing either format when I move character by character. I have to press JAWS key-f, which works for me but not for Rebecca. Her solution is Windows key-alt-I, which at least takes you up to the point where the format changes. So does Text Analyzer, but on my system, TA just verbalizes a change in format without specifying what that format is. Astounding that JAWS users have to put so much thought and work into a detail like this. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List On Behalf Of Fernando Gregoire Sent: Sunday, May 20, 2018 10:09 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Superscript in Word 2016 Hi Adrian, You were told nice alternatives to make JAWS report superscript and subscript, so it makes no sense I repeat many things others already said. Re: [JAWS-Users] Superscript in Word 2016
I had a similar problem when in college, with algebra. JAWS would not speak superscript to save my life, so when doing my notes, I used a carot symbol between the root number, and the superscript. After that, I could do the equation, and superscript the specific number. Sometimes you have to get a little creative; even when using JAWS. Re: [JAWS-Users] Superscript in Word 2016
I suppose it's one of those things where some like one option rather than another. The Windows-alt-I alerts me at each instance of super- and subscript. But it's almost as easy to change schemes: Insert-alt-s And press p for proofreading attributes and font info. Then I can arrow through the document, up, down, left, right, or use say all, and the different scrips will be demonstrated by a change in pitch. If I only had one instance of a change, I would go for the Windows-alt-I, but if I wanted to read and review a document, it's good the other option is there. If I remember correctly from playing with it yesterday, there are other schemes that alert for superscript, but p for proofreading is easy to remember. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Adrian Spratt Sent: Monday, May 21, 2018 11:05 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Superscript in Word 2016 Hi, Fernando. [JAWS-Users] JAWS losing volume
Lately I notice JAWS losing volume whenever another speaking program is in use. Example, when I'm on Skype, the JAWS volume is so low I can hardly hear it. Is this the opposite of audio ducking? Yes, smile, but the brain, my brain, seems to remember "p" for proofreading, more easily than "c" for classic attributes and font info. Whatever works! LOL. Actually now that I know Word is reliably printing super and sub scripts as instructed, I will probably take them for granted. But if I were taking chemistry, I would definitely have that proofreading scheme on so that I would hear formulas as written. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Adrian Spratt Sent: Monday, May 21, 2018 1:44 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Superscript in Word 2016 You've solved the problem for your needs, Rebecca, but I note that the "classic attributes and font" speech and sounds scheme picks up superscript. Re: [JAWS-Users] unable to add to cart
Ok, I didn't try the first site, but the AmyMyersMd.com site, I did. Initially, I could not get it to add items to the cart with either IE11 on Google Chrome version 66 on my PC. But, I did discover a workaround with Chrome (I didn't try it with IE11): When you search for an item and bring up the descripption, there is a combobox to select the quantity. I think the default is one, just make sure it is some whole number and not zero. Now, the workaround: I used the Jaws OCR feature to read the Window. As I read down through the text (I have it set to the default where the things it recognizes are at a slightly lower pitch); when I got to the AddToCart button, I left-clicked it with the slash key on the numpad. It added the item to the cart and gave me a checkout button. I am trying to buy supplements from them. I tried IE, Firefox and Chrome and none worked. It is possible to call these places and order over the phone which is what I'll have to do tomorrow, but it is just wrong that I can't do it online. I have an older Jaws, but from what people have written, that's not the problem. I do have NVDA downloaded and honestly didn't think to try it. But for me it is just too aggrevating to have to go through all these various browsers, screen readers, etc to accomplish a simple task of putting something in a cart. Thanks. I know Google Chrome worked for me on some sites whee IE didn't, but I couldn't get Google Chrome to work with versions of Jaws earlier than 17. Second question, as an assistive tech trainer, I often advise my clients to have at least a demo of other screen-readers in their back pockets, as there are instances when one will not work while another will. Re: [JAWS-Users] unable to add to cart
For the most part, I have no problem with Amazon, but in the last week, I've been unable to check a check box for one time purchases. I'm using the latest JAWs, IE and Windows 7. Yesterday, for the first time, I was unable to activate an add to cart button for an item I wished to purchase. I've reported the check box issue to the Amazon Disability Help line. We'll see if that helps. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List On Behalf Of Holger Fiallo Sent: Sunday, May 20, 2018 10:31 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] unable to add to cart noticing the same issue with amazon.com I tried to purchase something but could not find any button to add to card. I selected a DIY frame, and a combo list was presented with a style type to pick. But regardless, I was not able to work the buttons after that. But I did see a thread on the JFW list with a similar issue in selecting something on the screen. Here is that solution: To select the tick box with JAWS, simply press the bypass key, JAWS key+3 then space bar. This will tick it. Give that a try and let us know. There are no elements other than the quantity edit field which is set to 1 by default and the add to shopping cart button. You enter the quantity of the item you want if if it is more than 1 and click on the button to add it to your cart. But no keystroke will activate it with JAWS or any other screen reader. For a simple example, if the quantity edit field is blank, then a number needs first to be entered. In other cases, I've seen where a size or a color choice must first be selected before the button can be activated. There are so many variables in a simple shopping app that is dependent on the item itself, that it's hard to pin down a specific problem related to JAWS.
