I recently tried to do an update using the JAWS update feature on my
JAWS 10 program and received the following message.

The following updates could not be installed:
   - JAWS 10.0.1139 Update

There may be a problem with your current installation, typically due to
deleted or renamed files. Run a repair of your original installation and try
to update again.
I am not sure where my original JAWS 10 disk is. How do I do a repair?
 Thank you.

God bless,

Re: [JAWS-Users] I Have a Question About Jaws and Accounting Software

2009-02-20 Thread Hugh Megarry
have a read of this I got it a few days ago might be something that could
help
Sightless accounting
Written by NetGuide Contributor
Monday, 16 February 2009

In what is believed to be a world first, a New Zealand software company,
Accomplish Ltd, has created accounting software specially modified to enable
efficient use by the blind and visually impaired.

We're told this is the first accounting software in the world that has
stood up in user tests by blind people, said the company's general manager,
Grant Hewson, at the launch of the 2009 edition of its CashManager software.
Obviously, this is attracting a lot of interest from organisations serving
the blind and visually impaired, not only in New Zealand, but also in
Australia, the United Kingdom and the USA.

It's really an example of Kiwi ingenuity helping to solve a global problem
in terms of providing good access to the benefits of modern technology for
blind people, as well for the movement impaired.

LINK:
http://nz.accomplishglobal.com/

The accessibility of the product is endorsed by Neil Jarvis, Executive
Director, Access, Innovation and Enterprise for the Royal New Zealand
Foundation of the Blind, who comments: We welcome any move which improves
accessibility and equality for blind and partially sighted people,

Jarvis adds: In December last year, we undertook a software audit of
CashManager 2009, examining a series of tasks by sighted and blind testers
who don't usually use financial software. It worked well with adaptive
technology software and, in terms of accessibility, we're happy to recommend
the product to blind or partially sighted people for managing their small
business finances.

Jarvis explains that blind people use screen reading software which
verbalises letters or numerals as they are typed, and verbalises the
position of the cursor in pull-down menus or in dialogue or command boxes.
Screenreaders and magnifiers are also used by people who are partially
sighted, along with font, colour and contrast enhancements.

The software's development has been assisted by blind entrepreneur Terry
Bartlett, of Dunedin (pictured above), who stumbled on CashManager while
searching the Web for accounting software he could use when he started his
own business two years ago.

I was taking a big risk going out on my own, and it was pretty scary,
recalls the Managing Director of Corner Enterprises Ltd. I didn't know how
I was going to be able to write quotes, or send out invoices, let alone
handle money, reconcile bank accounts, keep track of GST and taxes and so
on.

Bartlett's business is based around teaching clients touch typing, designing
Web pages, providing advice on IT and accessible technology, as well as
assisting customers with property management and even organising coal and
firewood deliveries.

Over time Bartlett jotted down ideas on how Accomplish could make the
software even better for the blind or visually impaired user. They
responded very positively, he says.

Hewson says Bartlett helped the company realise there was a new niche market
for its software.

Our technical and programming people were only too pleased to make the
improvements he was suggesting, many related to everyday use by someone who
is blind or visually impaired.

Whilst driven by the needs of blind people, the changes suggested by Terry
and the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind have resulted in enhanced
usability for all keyboard users. The changes indirectly benefit those with
occupational overuse syndrome, limited mobility or simply a preference for
using the keyboard, adds Hewson.

Originally founded in Australia almost 20 years ago, Accomplish today is
headquartered in Auckland and serves some 25,000 small to medium business
enterprises with accounting software designed specifically for New Zealand,
Australian and United Kingdom needs.

Hi Folks,

In previous versions of Jaws, one could press alt+spacebar to get to the
system menu, where one could simply press the letter X to maximize the
window.

That is no longer possible with version 10.

I'm assuming that FS has replaced this keystroke with another one, and so
I'm wondering what it is.

As of now, I'm forced to use my Jaws cursor to go to the top of the window
and click on the maximize button, which, needless to say, is a pain the
royal backside.

Is there a keystroke that will maximize the window or allow me to access the
system menu on a window in order to perform what I want to do?

Any help would be appreciated.

I ran across a feature that is possibly new to JAWS 10. Check this out:
1. Press insert number 6 to open Configuration Manager. If asked for a new
configuration name, press enter to accept the suggested filename, which has
the same name of the executable with a .jcf extension.
2. Press alt s to open the set options menu, then press a to open the
advanced settings dialog box.
3. Tab around until you come across MSAA Mode. By default, this is set to
automatic, but you can set it to either enhanced or classic.
4. Press enter to accept the ok button.
5. Save the configuration with control s.
6. Exit Configuration Manager.
I've tried this feature with several applications, and it does make a
difference, particularly when in list or tree views.
Enjoy!

MSAA stands for Microsoft Active Accessibility. It is a way for software to
describe the objects that are being used to create the program such as
lists, trees and such. When a developer uses what are known as standard
controls, the MSAA info is generally provided automatically. However when a
developer builds an application out of custom controls, then it is typically
necessary to support some form of method for programs like screen readers to
get at information. Supporting MSAA for example is how Flash and iTunes
make themselves accessible.

This is a new feature in JAWS 10. By and large you shouldn't need to go
changing this setting. But if you know that an application that isn't
speaking so well is supposed to have MSAA support, this is a setting you can
adjust.

Hi Hugh
I'm not sure of the exact structure of IE 7, but try this:
While in IE, go to the tools menyu, then options.
Look for the advanced tab, then the setting you are looking for might be
found under multi-media.

Currently, it will not install and work. Do you have XP 64 Bit now? To be
honest, we have not been hearing many requests for this. Most users with XP
will not have reason to go to 64 Bit. I'd be happy to hear reasons to work
more on it, I just know there are many tasks to get to so I'd like to find
out if users are finding the need.

Hugh,
That is no problem Hugh. You can remain in XP till the next Windows OS and
get that one in 64 Bit. Most all computers that have shipped with XP were 32
bit versions and people will not really be changing to XP 64 Bit.

Hi this is called Virtual Memory and won't actually affect your physical
memory. Note though that little or even no virtual memory can cause
instabilities to the operating system as it's relying on the ram alone. It's
best to leave it at either custom size or system managed.

Hugh,
That is no problem Hugh. You can remain in XP till the next Windows OS and
get that one in 64 Bit. Most all computers that have shipped with XP were 32
bit versions and people will not really be changing to XP 64 Bit.

Eric

I am sure there will be probs but I for one am looking forward to the 64 bit
jaws and being able to use more ram and I am sure that there will be
adjustments needed to this jaws just as there is to all programmes as time
goes on things will get better rather be hopeful and I think this v of jaws
I am using now jaws ten is better than nine and as from jaws 11 both 64 and
32 will be on the one disc and you can install the one you need then I am
happy enough mind you could do with a few little probs getting sorted out in
jaws 10 but they will come in time fingers crossed lol

Well I am getting to like a s c now that I seem to be able to use it a
little better and I would hope they will make it more useable for screen
readers I have also used c cleaner my only prob with it every time I have
used it I need to put in passwords again on some web sites like for the
people and others like it and I don't think it will do as much as a s c
 but
 I would rather run a s c for a few weeks before I make a final judgment
 and
I have to say you do need sighted help to run it if your running the free
one even if its only for the first time so you can be sure that all the
check boxes are checked and also to upgrade to the pro you need someone to
click on the upgrade box for you don't know about inputting the licence
number never tried it myself as I got the son in law to input it for me as
he was here doing the rest anyway but as far as running it now I am
 getting
on ok and again setting things up don't know if that is usable with screen
readers unfortunately you can not get a trial of pro to try it out for
yourself to see if its ok for you something I might put in the email to
 them
say a 30 day free trial of the pro a s c would be good

 For

web page for C Cleaner and it doesn't sound as comprehensive as Advanced

Re: [JAWS-Users] registering Advanced System Care help

2008-12-13 Thread Hugh Megarry
I would normally do the same but I am going to see if I can do something
about this one the programme is good as far as what its doing so if it was
more usable with screen readers then it could be of benafite to lots of
screen reader users who are not comfortable with going into stuff in the o
s and trying to fix them it has sorted out a few things on this computer
seems to be running slightly better since I ran it twice its cut around nine
seconds of the boot up time and later on today when I get it up to the pro
one then I will do a few tests to see if its improved things on this
computer again
so far have only run the free one on this one and the other computer here
was running badly and now its going like a dream so will let you all know
how it works out

yup, afraid you'll deffinatly need a pair of eyes. I had sighted assistance
to click the button, once that was done it was easy to put the details in.
but to locate the correct button without help? forget it.

ah well done it now lets see how the program works.

actually looking at it now, I'm non the wiser how it works.

I see the buttons, stop, scan, repair etc but jaws doesn't read anything
else. for example, I'm supposed to get a list of items that need check
marks but I haven't as yet found that list. occasionally I locate a tab,
but cant do nothing with it.

I have clicked the scan button but the pc doesn't appear to do anything,
same with the repair.

anyone got a clue as to why this program is so unfriendly?

thanks for your help.

hiya Hugh

if you want to use pro you have to register, it is the same program though.
that is why I asked if anyone new how to get round this problem both Hugh
and I appear to have.

I looked round the options and it would appear that is where we can change
what the program scans, when etc.

it is a bit tricky as I found I had to use the jaws cursor to click the tab
I wanted to change. I'm not sure how to explain that, but if you tab to
what you wish to look at, then while on that item or tab rather, go to your
jaws cursor, click it then you can tab over and locate further options.

I hope this is of use to you Hugh, and also hope vie explained it clearly.

I also noted there was a user section and you could change the skin either
black or white. this doesn't appear to make any difference to the program
though. Was hoping it was like with Avast where a skin change is all that's
needed.

in there was two lots of boxes which had percentages in them, but I
couldn't tell what it was for. both of them where set to 0. I've no ideas
what happens if you change them though. might do that see if it makes any
difference.

any way, over night it would appear advanced system care did something as I
had a message on my window to say it had fixed things. so least I now know
it is doing something.

so I'd suggest just leaving it alone.

I still cant figure out why jaws cant see the correct button for registering
the program, I even tried changing the graphics mode to all but I still
couldn't click it.

any way, done now and happier it's doing something.

thanks

Elaine

If you are using the free version of Advanced System Care, there is no
registration procedure. The user interface contains just the four buttons
you encountered: scan, repair, stop and close. That's it. You're not
 missing anything.

2008-12-13 Thread Hugh Megarry
Now I have the pro one running I just hit jaws key and F 11 and go down to
it in the list hit enter on it that opens up a list of things within the
list is a few sub lists just arrow right and they open up go to the one you
want and hit enter on it with the scan I just heard jaws saying the
percentage of the scans I think there are four in all after jaws shuts up
Hold on for a min and then hit the repair button again I heard jaws saying
a percentage again hold on for a min after jaws shuts up lol and that is it
done now there was no way for me to tell how much there was to repair or if
anything needed checked so am going to run different scans with a sighty
here with me just to see if there is anything needed to be checked each time
hopefully not but it is a pity its not fully useable with a screen reader
only time will tell if they are willing to make changes to it

I was using the free version of Advanced SystemCare, However, after many
attempts to try to run the software to clean my computer, I became
increasingly annoyed since I could not do any repairs and Jaws got lost some
where in the shuffle.

I finally had to reboot my computer and then I said the heck with it.
I uninstalled the software and now I am just going to depend on Super
AntiSpyware and CCleaner.

Oh well,

Well I am getting to like a s c now that I seem to be able to use it a
little better and I would hope they will make it more useable for screen

used it I need to put in passwords again on some web sites like for the
people and others like it and I don't think it will do as much as a s c but
I would rather run a s c for a few weeks before I make a final judgment and
I have to say you do need sighted help to run it if your running the free
one even if its only for the first time so you can be sure that all the
check boxes are checked and also to upgrade to the pro you need someone to
click on the upgrade box for you don't know about inputting the licence
number never tried it myself as I got the son in law to input it for me as
he was here doing the rest anyway but as far as running it now I am getting
on ok and again setting things up don't know if that is usable with screen
readers unfortunately you can not get a trial of pro to try it out for
yourself to see if its ok for you something I might put in the email to them
say a 30 day free trial of the pro a s c would be good

How do you get to the list of things to fix for the life of me I can not get
to it at all and as far as I can see the free one will fix most things just
need to get the pro one working and then I could say if it will fix more or
not maybe it will find more as well

Elaine,

Are you saying that the free version of Advanced SystemCare is worthless? I
understand it when you say that you need sighted assistance to register the
pro version.

My question is this. I have the free version on my PC and when I do a scan,
it gives me a list of items to be repaired. However, it seems that we cannot
do a repair unless we purchase the pro version. Is this correct? Am I
missing something?

Thanks for any advice.

hiya

yep, when I completed a scan with the free version, I read with the jaws
cursor on screen that the program will not remove or optimise anything until
you upgrade to pro. so, in short, you have to buy pro.

I don't know if my jaws is set up differently or something, but I'm not
seeing any check boxes Hugh mentioned and I cant see why I'm not, but I'm
not.

I had to ask my dad to click on the update button for me then I was able to
then in put the registration details. until then, no I couldn't register
pro.

even now I'm not seeing any check boxes.

when I bring up the window all I see is, scan, repair, close and if I read
it with the jaws cursor it reads my desktop items. I cant find this darned
window.

I'm able to tab to those buttons.

if I do locate the list box, jaws says blank.

while looking through the options it looks like the program will
automatically do things, it's just I like to know what it's doing.

I'd go so far as to say this program is not jaws friendly. I personally
wouldn't recommend it.

Just as well it was on offer *smiles*. in total it cost me £13 but in my
opinions so far that is £13 too much.

if you've not purchased it, I'd not bother but that is up to you.

hope this helps

If you are using the free version of Advanced System Care, there is no
registration procedure. The user interface contains just the four buttons
you encountered: scan, repair, stop and close. That's it. You're not
missing anything.

This is true but if you install JAWS 10 on the target computer, even
 though
it runs as a demo, you can use Tandem for 40 minutes at least. The
 following
web page offers a lot of questions and answers regarding Tandem.

I don't think there is a way to do that but as far as I understand it you
must give the other person a number that you get from the tandem site before
they can get onto your computer so you have control of it at all times and a

A strange thing happened this morning that I'm wondering if particular to
my
computer or if this applies to others as well. I turned my computer on
 as
normal and when done booting up I heard Jaws 10 beta version expired,
contact freedom scientific. Following this and on subsequent boots
 nothing
but silence, not even a 40 minute demo mode. This beta version has been
working fine as I've been giving them feedback. I did not upgrade to the
latest beta version a couple of weeks or so ago but have the one just
 before
it. I know these beta versions expire once they release the final JAWS
version and folks receive their CD's in the mail. Have they released the
 CD
yet as I've not received or heard that they have. Fortunately I still
 have
JAWS 9 on my machine so no big deal. However, I'm not looking forward to
going to work Monday morning and having the same thing happen down there.
 Anyone else had this?

 Al

Microsoft created a worksheet consisting of 52 individual sheets that show
how commands were performed in Word 2003 and how to perform them in Word
2007. Commands available in menus and all toolbars in Word 2003 are
included. You might like to use it as a way to quickly find how to do
specific tasks in Word 2007. For example, if you open the spreadsheet and
use CTRL-Shift-S to list all the sheets, you can then press the letter F
four times until you find the sheet that lists all the commands for the
forms toolbar. Of course, pressing enter on the choice opens the specific
sheet. In that sheet, one column shows how you picked a certain tool from
the forms toolbar in Word 2003, and another column shows how to do it in
Word 2007.

If you are interested in this Excel file I can send it to you.

Take care.

Hello jeffrey. Did you know that you don't have to upgrade to office 2007
if you don't want to. That's right there is a free downloadable patch to
run office 2007 doccuments in office 2003 without changing to the complete
office 2007. The patch is a free download and the great thing is you can
still use the commands to open office 2007 doccuments with office 2003
without changing anything. The office 2003 stays the same and when you
download the patch to open office 2007 doccuments nothing changes. Lot of
people don't know that but you can do it.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Hello, just an introduction to you because I just
joined this list:

Hi I am a 54 year-old lady who has been out of computer for
almost twenty years. My problem now is no instruction with Jaws
in my area. So much of what goes by here and in front of me I do
not know what it is, or what it does, or what it's for. Do you
all know of any good beginning tutorials online for windows, and
Jaws? Something not too hard to get through without going through
many pages looking for it? I am currently using Jaws 9 because I
don't know how to install ten. A guy I know did it for me. I am
also using a braillenote to communicate with you because don't
complesely understand Outlook Express also need help with that
too. I am also asking if you have advice about what printers and
scanners may be good for use with Jaws as I am in great need of
both, but have no idea what models might work. I tried a
combination printer from Del, but would not work with Jaws.
Everything locked up. The guy I was with had also no knowledge
of Jaws. It was a combination printer scanner, but would not
work. Sold to a friend. Any information would be appreciated.
I did have a sighted instructor for a few months, but in the end,
learned from other professionals in the area that she has been
telling blind people here that she knows jaws, and she doesn't,
finally admitted it to me. So many have been taken in by her.
Fortunately, for us she is just volunteer at local library. So
we paid nothing thank you. But this left me in great confusion
because everything she gave me was in print, and not organized,
and I have no readers. Any help you all can give will be greatly
appreciated. Everyone have a good week. Will be looking forward
to hearing from you. Karen and Seeing Eye dog Harpo

Subject: [JAWS-Users] trouble with combo boxes

Hello List,
When I am registering for something on the internet and encounter a combo
box JAWS will not read or select any of the choices within that combo box.
It just reads '1 of 6 or 4 of 11' as an example. I am running JAWS 7.00 and
recently upgraded to Internet Explorer 7.0 and am using XP professional.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It could be that you do not have windows sounds enabled so there would be no
sound to let you know there was a balloon tip there

Christy,

I Google this and everything I find involves editing the registry. By
default, the balloon tips should be enabled. So unless you have disabled
them, they should already be on. There could be an option in Jaws to enable
the announcement, but I am not aware of any. There is an option to enable
or disable the tool tips, but this is different that the balloon tips.

What type of notifications are you not hearing?
I realize that you are referring to the baloon messages, but are you
talking
about something like Windows update and similar items?
If so, then I am not sure if there is a way to turn those types of
  notifications on and off.
There may be, but I don't recall seeing that option anywhere.
Hopefully someone else can point you in the right direction.

Christy,
If you are using Jaws 9, when you hear the baloon message, you should be
able to press your left mouse button and that will give focus to that
message.

Hi,

I am using the latest version of Jaws, and the latest version of AVG. Every
e-mail I receive says it has an attachment even though there isn't. Can
someone tell me if this is a problem with Jaws or AVG? I'd like to get rid
of it because I find it quite annoying.

Thanks a lot,
