Subject: [JAWS-Users] Using the Refresh this PC in W-10

Good morning Jaws users list, I was finally able to get the refresh this PC,
to work for me. I tried this feature out several times a year ago, I could
not get it to work for me. But lo-and-behold, it worked this time. I chose
to keep my files. So after waiting for 90 minutes or so, I was on the log-in
screen. Of course the refresh feature removed more than 20 programs and apps
on my computer including all Freedom Scientific products, all the Jaws
versions, the F S reader and much more. The benefit of doing a refresh, it
reloads the windows operating system files new and fresh. So I had to turn
off all live tiles and remove them from start. I had to uninstall all
unwanted apps. I had to turn off all the background apps that I did not want
turned on. I had to install Jaws and put my authorization code back into the
Jaws activate window. I had to download and set up my office 365 again, I
had to set up my outlook 2016 email accounts again. LOL. But I believe this
has fixed the issues I encountered after trying to manually update to the
creators update and failing to do so. So hopefully with any luck, my
computer will get updated to the creators update when it comes to my
computer. I have learned my lesson, no more manually trying to update to the
creators update, I will just wait. So if any of you decide to use this
refresh your PC feature in W-10, know you will have to reinstall Jaws and
much more. Read below and see what all was removed on my computer after I
successfully completed the refresh my PC process.

Hi Jaws Users list, remember to check the versions of all your F S products
before the Creators update comes out for W-10.
Go to the following page on Freedom Scientific's website.

http://www.freedomscientific.com/Support/TechnicalSupport/Bulletin/1631

Technical Support: Will JAWS, ZoomText, and MAGic work with the Windows 10
Creators update coming in April 2017?
The Windows 10 Creators update is the next major release from Microsoft
scheduled to begin rolling out to Windows 10 users in April 2017. During the
testing of insider builds for this update, issues were discovered that
impacted ZoomText, JAWS, and MAGic. These issues have been addressed and
updates to these products are now available. It is important that customers
who are using Windows 10 and getting all its updates, update our software
prior to the installation of the Creators update. Otherwise, you could
experience problems with the login screen as well as reading and navigating
the Start menu.
Make sure you are updated to the following versions.
What versions are ready for the Creators update for W-10.

* ZoomText 11.2.85 - 32-bit and 64-bit

Kathy,

It has been a number of years since I last used Text Cloner, but at that
time it was a pretty good product for the price. If you are looking for an
affordable product to achieve scanning everyday hardcopy material and have
it read back to you, Text Cloner will get the job done. I like to use the
analogy, Text Cloner is to OpenBook as a motorcycle is to a car. Both the
car and motorcycle will get you to where you need to go, but they each have
their pros and cons.

I hope this is at least a little bit helpful. Have you reviewed the
features list for each product?

I should add, Kathy, that Vista will have security updates into at least
mid-2016. Windows 7 is until early 2020 as I recall, and with the market
penetration of Windows 7, it wouldn't surprise me at all if it got extended
as XP's life cycle got extended.

Next year, we'll see Windows 10 get released. I assume the next release of
Jaws will have the ability to work with the new features in Windows 10. It
should be nicer, from what I've read, than Windows 8. So, you can always
save money and use your current laptop and get something newer in a year or
so that will support all the features of the newer Windows including
touchscreen gestures; which would not be available at all on your older
machine.

I do some tech work, unless you have a copy of Windows 7 32-bit already and
just want to do it, sure. But, it isn't worth it, otherwise.

If you need to buy a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit, you can find
them for $90 on Amazon. I don't think you can do an in-place upgrade with
an OEM copy. So, you'll need to backup your laptop, then re-format and
install Windows 7.

If you are going to pay a tech to do this, you're probably looking at a
couple hours.

You'd be better off buying a refurbished Windows 7 Home Premium laptop.
I've seen some for $150 or so and possibly higher if you want better specs.

You can see if your laptop will run Windows 7 by running the Microsoft
Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor which you can dowload at
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=20

It will show you hardware specs, what if any software drivers may not work
in Windows 7.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

hello;

I hope this is accurate,
perhaps someone can comment on the following;

Method: Using the Recovery partition
Toshiba laptops from mid-2007 onwards don't have a recovery disc supplied
with the laptop. Instead, Toshiba has added a hidden partition on the hard
drive which contains the same files as a recovery CD/DVD.

To restore your laptop to its factory settings, follow these steps:

Warning: All data on the hard drive will be erased. Back up any important
data before proceeding. Make sure the computer is connected to a power
supply and do not switch it off or restart during the process.

1) Hold down the power button for ten seconds to switch off your machine

Please note: Holding down the power button on the machine forces it to
switch off. Any unsaved data will be lost.

2) Press and hold the zero key and at the same time, tap the power button
once to switch on your notebook
3) When the machine starts beeping, release the zero key
4) When prompted by the warning screen, select Yes to continue with the
system recovery
5) Select Recovery of Factory Default Software and click Next
6) Select Recover to out-of-box state and Click Next again
7) Click Next to Start the recovery

  FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Fort Wayne, Indiana (January 14, 2014) - GW Micro, Inc.
(www.gwmicro.comhttp://www.gwmicro.com) is proud to make a revolutionary
announcement. GW Micro and Microsoft Corp. have partnered to make
Window-Eyes available to users of Microsoft Office at no cost. Window-Eyes
is a screen reader that enables people who are blind, visually impaired, or
print disabled to have full access to Windows PCs and makes the computer
accessible via speech and/or Braille.

To better deliver Window-Eyes to the people who need it most, GW Micro and
Microsoft have collaborated on this global initiative, available in over 15
languages, to enable anyone using Microsoft Office 2010 or later to also use
Window-Eyes for free. Access to technology is critical to people who are
blind or visually impaired in order to have the same opportunity to compete
in the workplace. As such, this initiative between GW Micro and Microsoft
has the potential to reduce barriers for millions of people who are blind or
visually impaired around the world.

As the population ages, technologies like Window-Eyes will become more and
more important as the number of people with age-related macular degeneration
and other retinal degenerative diseases increases. This significant change
in the way we are doing business reflects the changing perception of
accessibility and also technology in general. Rather than wait for the
world to change, Microsoft and GW Micro are leading the way, said Dan
Weirich, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for GW Micro. Weirich
believes this technology can help millions of people gain access to their
PC, and that providing it free of charge will open a whole new world of
assistive technology to many people.

In light of the rapidly changing face of technology and specifically, the
changing face of assistive technology, the combined efforts of GW Micro and
Microsoft have the goal of providing accessibility to people who are blind
and visually impaired for the long term.

Microsoft continues to take accessibility seriously. By partnering with
GW Micro in this endeavour we are demonstrating Microsoft's on-going
commitment to provide all of our customers with the technology and tools to
help each person be productive in both their work and personal lives. said
Rob Sinclair, Chief Accessibility Officer for Microsoft.

Eligible customers, using Microsoft Office 2010 or higher, will be able to
download a full version of Window-Eyes starting today at
www.WindowEyesForOffice.comhttp://www.WindowEyesForOffice.com. The

One of the first things you're beeing asked for when setting your account
up, is whether it has to be a pop3 or imap account.
This should be like a compobox, where you can select imap using the arrow up
and down.

Go for it.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Disk cleanup/ defrag

Here are he steps I have used recommended by JAWS.

 1. Prefetch

When you launch an application, Windows XP stores that information in a file
called, prefetch. These files can accumulate over a period of time and will

have some affect on the loading of Windows. It doesn't hurt to clean out
this file from time to time and will not affect the operation of your PC to
delete

them.

Go to the start menu and either arrow down to run or just type the letter R.

When the edit box appears, type in: prefetch and press enter.

You will have a list of applications that you have used since you have been
using Windows XP.

Simply do a control a to select all and then press your shift delete. If
you just press delete, those files will go into the recycle bin, but adding
the

shift key will bypass it.

Now say yes to, are you sure you want to delete these files.

Finally press alt f4 to exit.

 2. Disc Clean-up

Whenever you surf the internet or download files, your PC stores information
on the hard drive in a temp folder. There are other files included in the

Disc Clean-Up which you probably would want to get rid of.

Go to your start menu, then to All Programs, then Accessories,
next to System Tools and finally to Disc Clean-Up and press enter.

It might take a few minutes for it to open, depending on if it
will compress old files. But once it does, you will probably be asked which

Drive your want to clean. Select the C drive.

Once this is selected, you will have a list of items that the
disc clean-up will clean. These may include:

Downloaded Internet Files

Temp Internet Internet Files

Off Line Web Pages

Office Set-Up Files

Recycle Bin

Temporary Files

Web Publisher Files

Compress Old Files

Catalogue Files

As you down arrow through the list, you will notice that they may be
checked or unchecked. If they are checked, this will clean that option when
the next

Button is pressed. I recommend checking everything with the exception of,
compress old files. You only need to check this if your hard drive is
getting

Low on free drive space.

After you have checked the files you want to clean, tab to
next and press enter. You will be asked if you are sure you want to do
this, just

Press enter on, yes. It will take a few minutes, but when it is finished,
you will be taken out of the Disc Clean-Up.

---

*** Note. Make sure to add, space, before the ,/f. as indicated.

 3. Check Disc

The check disc should be performed before a scan disc is
performed. To do this, go to the start menu and then to, run.

When the edit box appears, type in: chkdsk /f and press enter. You will be
presented with a dialogue that says, the check disc cannot be performed
because

the volume is in use. Would you like to perform this the next time your
system starts? Just type the letter Y and press enter.

Now you will need to shut down any open applications and
restart your PC. When it begins to boot up and before Windows starts, your
PC will

perform a check disc. It will take a few minutes to perform, but when it is

finished, Windows will start up normally.

---

4. Scan Disc

Windows XP doesn't have an actual scan disc, but it does have something
relatively close to it.

To run scan disc, go to your desk top and then to, My Computer. If you
aren't using the classic start menu, you might have to go to your start

menu and then to My Computer there.

Open My Computer and highlight your C drive, sometimes called, Local Disc C.

Don't press enter, just highlight it. Now do an alt enter to

bring up the properties. Next do a control tab to the Tools tab.

You will be on, errors checking, check now button. Press your spacebar and
it will say, Start Button, but don't press enter yet. Instead,

tab to the check boxes and check, automatically fix files system errors and
the next cheek box which is, scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

Check both of the boxes. Now tab to the start button and press enter.

You will be presented with a dialogue saying that the disc check cannot bhe
performed because the disc check needs exclusive access to some

files. Do you want to schedule a disc check the next time you start Windows?

Just press your spacebar on yes. Now tab to OK and press enter. Alt f4

out of the properties and shut down any open applications and restart your
PC.

It may take as long as an hour for this process to complete, depending on
the size of your hard drive and how many errors you have, but be

Patient and Windows will restart once the process is complete.

Hi All,

I ran across a tip on how to set the time for how long balloon messages will
stay up so you can have time to access them.  Here you go;

In Windows 7 it's under Ease of Access. Type Ease of Access in to the
search box in the start prompt. In the Ease of Access Center go to, Make it
easier to focus on tasks, and hit enter.
Near the end of the options that come up is a combobox with different time
settings to adjust the time that those balloons stay on screen.
I adjusted mine to 1 minute which gives me enough time to find them and
click on them. Hope this helps. Take care.

I shut down Outlook and turned it back on. That didn't help. Jaws doesn't
let me turn it all the way off. What happens when I exit is that it gets
very slow but doesn't turn off completely. However, I did do that and then
turn it on again and it's back to its normal speed. But that didn't help
 either.

[JAWS-Users] new laptop/jaws 13

2012-02-09 Thread Kathy Pingstock
Good morning,

My husband surprised me with a new hp pavilion 64 bit laptop. He bought a
anti virus I am thinking it is web root not sure, it was already installed
on the unit.

Not really thinking I tried to install jaws 13 from the cd, halfway through
it froze up, I shut off the computer, I thought the cd had a problem, the
talking installed installed fine, when I got to set up it got stuck. So I
download the jaws 13 64 bit from the website of freedom, it all installed
fine I heard jaws talking and it ask to be restarted, well it started up
fine, got to the desktop it is stuck, can not do nothing, no jaws and the
mouse is stuck and my husband says it is not doing anything.

Is it possible that jaws and this anti virus is clashing together. I use mse
on my other units, but my husband did not know that.

He bought it from best buys, we are planning on taking it back today to see
if they can fix it. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Disk Cleanup

Defragmenting your computer periodically can greatly enhance the computer's
performance. While helpful, all defragmenting does is tidy up what is on
your computer; to get rid of unnecessary files such as temporary Internet
files and whatever is in your Recycling Bin, run Disk Cleanup as well. Think
of it this way: Defragmenting sweeps the floor and Disk Cleanup takes out
the trash. Click Start, Control Panel, Performance And Maintenance (in

run automatically. Once the analysis is complete, simply follow the prompts.
