Re: [JAWS-Users] Research It

2010-04-16 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr.
Most scoreboard sites update as of midnight or some other early eastern
time. The usatoday scores page updates at noon eastern. Otherwise, if you
go to sports network.com and go under nhl or hockey, you can get scores for
any day of the current month by clicking on the date.

It works fine here. Try deleting your user settings for JAWS. That's how I
fixed it as initially it didn't work as the web page opened but with a
 blank
virtual cursor. So take I clicked on a news story with BBC News? The web
page opens but with a blank virtual cursor. Deleting my user settings and
problem solved. So try that, rather than uninstalling or complaining to
 FS.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about opening a pdf document.

2010-01-18 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr.

If you open a PDF document with Adobe, you can read the document but if you
save it, the only option in adobe is to save it as an unformatted text file.

If you open it with conversion software, you can save it as a word document,
or in any other format allowed by the conversion software.

If you read the document in adobe, once you close it, the document returns
to its original PDF formatting.

If you open a pdf document, and it can't be read, you will read
unrecognizable letters or symbols; when you close it, the document will
return to its original PDF formatting.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Friendly home page for news

2009-11-14 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr.
Any number of news sources are very JAWS friendly. Your choice will depend
on where you live and your interests.

For example, www.boston.com, the Boston Globe will send you a daily
update; however, it is very much oriented to Boston.

At any time during the day you can go to such sources as www.usatoday.com or
www.foxnews.com and read current headlines.

Another option is www.drudgereport.com. That gives you headlines, but also
gives you links to several other news sources that you can visit.

If you want to do what you suggest, go into the inbox and go to the top of

paste that file into a word document is the text from all the messages saved

Hello Rakesh,

A link is shown below that you can use for downloading a zip folder that has
three files in it. One of the files is a step-by-step manual from MS Press
for FrontPage 2003. There is also an installation file in the zip folder
that you don't need to use if you can read the CHM files in the manual
without installing. When you open the step-by-step folder, one of the
subfolders will be references. Opening the references folder will show some
CHM files, one of which is an Office Quick Reference. Open it and the last
entry of the tree structure will be topics for FrontPage. You will need to
expand the FrontPage entry by using right arrow key and the topics will then
show as you use down arrow key. There is a Microsoft activeX (HHCTRL.OCX)
that allows the reading of these HTML help files. I am not sure if it is
included with the step-by-step file I sent and if not it might be installed
when the program installation is done. Try opening the step-by-step without
installing first. The other document included is a FrontPage product guide.

I haven't used FrontPage 2003 for a long time, but I don't think there was a
need for any special JAWS scripts.

Here is the link:

I would appreciate any ideas you might have.

If this is a word document:

1. Select your entire document
2. Go to the format menu;
3. scroll down to change case
4. hit enter
5. scroll down to lower case
6. hit enter.

You will have a document that is in lower case.

 Hi,
I am testing a web site for accessibility using JAWS 9.0.

 It is a secure site.

On the sign-in page, there are several links. When I pull up the
 links
list with insert-F7, they display correctly.

Once I enter my username and am transferred to the page where I need
 to
enter my password, the links are no longer spoken when I enter the
 list.
This behavior continues throughout the entire site from then on.

I would like to inform the developers of this problem and suggest a
reason. Does anyone know why this would be happening?

 Thanks,

I am not sure if there is a way to do what you are describing. With
multiple attachments, go to save attachments in the file menu; When you hit
enter you will be prompted to save all attachments. Then type in the drive
and/or folder where you want to save the attachments; then I believe that if
you tab to the right, you will get an ok. Hit enter, and all of the
attachments will be saved in the drive or folder you have selected.

In Outlook, send receive is Control M.

To check bcc, while in the message text, hit control tab; that will take you

you can check to see who is on the BCC line.

No that doesn't work in Outlook - bcc is not there and it says headers
unavailable.
I vaguely recall it being slightly more complicated than that as most
things seem to be with Outlook.

Mandy.
Most of the time I use Outlook Express, it is easier to use and,
 presumably,
by virtue of its name it's faster - but sometimes I want to try to use
Microsoft Outlook but how do I set it up so that my emails automatically
send and receive -at the moment I have to press f9 for the emails to come
 in
and go out -I am sure I've ticked all the right boxes. I have a pop3
 account.

Also how do I get BCC I know it's something to do with all headers but
 can't
 remember.

Spell check will not check upper case; there is probably someone on this
list who knows how to change that setting to permit spell checking in upper
case.

Hi folks,

This morning I created a list of items typed in upper case
in MS-Word XP and when I went to spell check my work Jaws
announced that the spell check was complete and clearly
there were some words that were not spelled correctly.
I entered a purposely misspelled word in lower case and the
spell checker caught it.
Any ideas what might be going on and how to fix it?
I am using Jaws 9.latest, Office-XP and Windows XP-Pro.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Copying web text without formatting

2009-03-06 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr
Take the word document with the unwanted formatting and:
Control A to select all,
Control C to copy
Go to the edit menu,
Go to paste special,
Then go to unformatted text,
Control V to paste the document.
You will get a document in rich text format, which you can save as a word
document.

2009-02-15 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr.
There may be a better way to do this, but try the following:

1. Select the entire page where the article appears by hitting control A:
2. Open word;
3. Paste what you have saved into word;
4. save that file and give it a name;
5. scroll through the page you have saved until you find the article you
wantt;
6. Start selecting text at the beginning of the article and continue until
you reach the end;
7. Copy that text, control c
8. open another word document and paste the article into that document;
9. Finally, give that document a file name and save it.

I would like to save an article from the web to a file and tried it and it
didn't show up in the file. I first tried to go to spot where jaws said
beginning of the article then hit select all, and then c for copy to
clipboard then tried to go to open the file and paste. What did I do wrong?

This is because of the way in which the computer organizes files. Go to my
computer, go into the drive you desire such as the C drive which is usually
called local, or local drive, go to the view menu and scroll down until you
hear list. Then you will get your file list in 1, 2, 3 order.

Hi all;
I have 10.00 and XP home.
When I am in Microsoft word and go to the list of files by hitting Control
O.
I then shift tab until I get the list of files.
It seems that JAWS does not read the entire list.
JAWS seems to read every third file.
I will hit the say line and JAWS reads the name of the file and says 11
of 83.
I down arrow once and it says the name of the file 14 of 83.
I can't find 12 and 13.
It's like this down the entire list, reading third file.

Thanks for any help.

important to you, but in a generic sense, it is not sent with high

Re: [JAWS-Users] How do you open an attachment in a message in out look.

2009-02-04 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr

When the cursor or the focus is on the attachment, hit insert A. This
sometimes does not work however, depending on the version of JAWS and
perhaps upon the manner in which the attachment was created. Even if the
attachment opens, if it is a word document, you will have to hit enter when
JAWS announces ok, and then you will be told that JAWS does not support the
particular view of the document. Then you need to go to the view menu and
hit enter on Normal. Then you can read the document.

A better approach, especially if you want to save the attachment, is that
once you know there is an attachment go to the file menu and scroll down to
save attachment. Hit enter. Whatever name has been given to the attachment
will appear. Then type in the drive and directory where you want the
attachment to be saved, how you want the attachment to be named and the file
extension. For example:

C:\research\election2008.doc

Check to be sure you are using the correct file extension. For example,
if the attachment is a .pdf document, save it as a pdf file, then go to
where it is saved and convert it to word or text by using a conversion
program.

That is because of this wonderful new feature in JAWS10, you magically
wind up in forms mode, whether you want to be there or not. Don't hit enter;
if you want to be in forms mode, you are already there.

Probably nothing; it is not a JAWS problem; it simply takes time for the

Re: [JAWS-Users] Problems With New Laptop and JAWS 10

2009-01-03 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr.

One solution when this forms mode features locks you in is to tab until you
are out of the field and then use the up or down arrow keys to get away from
the forms mode field. If you go to a website where you know that JAWS is
going to lock you up, go to the bottom of the page and scroll up on the page
until you find what you are looking for.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Problems With New Laptop and JAWS 10

Hello everyone,

I just got a new Sony VAIo laptop just over a week ago and I am having a few
problems with it when using JAWS.

The first problem I encountered was that every time I turned the wireless
switch off, or turned the power to the CD/DVD drive off, JAWS would require
a new activation code. I called Freedom Scientific Technical Support and a
very nice lady explained to me that JAWS was using different locking codes
when the computer was in the different physical states, and to rectify the
problem that I would have to activate it using codes generated from
FSActivate.com. So I activated in the three different states--internet and
CD drive off, internet off but CD drive oon, and internet on and CD drive
off...and for the most part, everything works.
The problem I'm having now is that at times--for no apparent reason--I get a
JAWS Error [6] telling me that this feature is not licensed to run on this
machine, and also a Microsoft Windows message saying that the application
file for JAWS has stopped working. Usually, all I have to do is restart
JAWS and I'm back in business...but it is rather annoying...and I was
wondering what is causing this problem and if there is anything I can do
about it?

Another more annoying problem I am having concerns the Auto Forms Mode
option. On my old computer, I could move in and out of form fields using
Auto Forms Mode with no problem; with this machine, however, JAWS often gets
stuck in forms mode and pressing the switch to PC Cursor command doesn't do
anything. Has anyone experienced this problem before, and what can I do
about it?

Thanks,
Michael

Re: [JAWS-Users] Annoying problem in IE

2008-12-30 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr
Part of this is due to the new features of JAWS 10 with respect to fields
where you type in data. I don't know if the new feature causes this or
whether the program does, but what you are describing is the fact that
Google, and other search boxes save prior searches; if you are not careful
with the new version of JAWS, it is easy to run an old search.

Go to Google and when you go into the search field, make sure that the line
you are on is blank. If it is not, use the backspace or delete key to clear
the line. Then type in your new search request and proceed with your search
as always.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 10 and formfield troubles

2008-11-21 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr.
I have problems with this new feature as well.

Can this feature be disabled so that you could return to the prior forms
mode feature?

If you land in one of these fields, how do you get out of it if you don't
want to enter any data? For example, there is one form field in Facebook
that seems impossible to get out of.

The feature also cannot handle either-or boxes. If you check the first box
and scroll through the next box, somehow the program (for example Lexis.com,
thinks you have unchecked the first box and checked the second.

Any help on this issue and this forms mode new feature would be much
appreciated.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 10 and formfield troubles

Hi
I excitedly installed my new Jaws 10 and started browsing the web and
getting used to the new way of filling in form fields. Then I went to my
college website. I go to Grand Canyon University online. The use the Angel
Network for their class websites. I logged in to one class and was able to
post a message in the message board as normal. Then I logged in to the other
class webpage and found that JAWS cannot find the box to type my message in.
This is causing me to fall behind in class. Worse I tried going back to JAWS
9 and had the same issues. What ever was changed in the installation of JAWS
10 appears to have affected both versions of Jaws. The class websites were
both working fine with JAWS last week before the installation of the new
JAWS. How can I get JAWS 10 to locate and open this text box on the college
website? I have been looking forward to this version of JAWS for months! I
want so much to make it work.
 Any ideas are appreciated.

God bless,
Mark

Re: [JAWS-Users] refreshable Braille displays

2008-11-04 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr
Before purchasing one, you should contact a sales rep from various providers
so you can try it out first. Check and compare features so that you can get
one that meets your needs.

You might also check some websites to see if someone is selling a used
model. That would save you some money and give you a chance to check out the
features of a particular model.

A major issue for you is what happens when it doesn't work. Where do you
have to send it to get it fixed and how long will it take and how much will
it cost. If you live in a large metropolitan area, see if there is some
person or some agency that you can take it too for repair. Once you have
any piece of technology, you depend on it so much that if it doesn't work,
it will cause you some major problems.

Respectfully,

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws 10 public beta expired

2008-11-03 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr
How is this type of information communicated to JAWS users? I arrived at my
office this morning only to find that JAWS10 was not loading. If the new
version will not ship until November 3, how, may I ask, can we use it in the
meantime? It seems to me that there should be a better way to handle issues
like this.

Re: [JAWS-Users] New scanner with Omnipage.

2008-10-30 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr
I use Omnipage, but the version number you gave does not match any number I
have seen. Usually Omnipage has a version number--the latest being version
16.

What you have may be an OEM version made for your particular scanner.

First, call omnipage tech support or check their website to find the version
you have. Once you learn that, you can download a user manual from the
omnipage website.

You should scan any document to a pdf file, save that file to a particular
folder, and then use conversion software to convert the document to word.
Omnipage, or Scansoft sells that as well. It is called PDF converter.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] New scanner with Omnipage.

Hi.

I've just bought a new Canon scanner lide 90 which has Omnipage 4SE on it if
that means anything to anyone on this list. I've installed the software
onto my laptop successfully. I can scan a document through Microsoft word
by going into file then selecting acquire text Omnipage SE4. The document
is scanned but the text goes into a text box which I'm unable to find with
Jaws. When I cursor down the page with the down arrow key, Jaws says blank
line. I've tried the say all command also but nothing happens with that
either. I've tried putting the text into a virtual buffer which reads some
information but not the whole page I don't think.

Please could anyone tell me how to get to the text box. I've been into the
verbosity settings in word, but I can't find anything to change to enable
jaws to read the document to me as a normal word document would be read.
I'd be grateful for any assistance with this as I'm not sure what to try
next.

Sue.

Re: [JAWS-Users] *(JAWS ISSUES)*

2008-10-07 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr.
How do you turn it off, and what are you turning off?

It is not the sounds that are the problem. The problem is, for example, that
it seems that when you go to a website that has a field to fill in, JAWS
takes you there directly whether you want to be there or not.

The other issue is what I call the either-or problem. If you have two edit
fields, and you must select one, if you select the first field, JAWS makes
it difficult to bypass the second field. I think that is a problem.

Re: [JAWS-Users] InsertF7 not listing links

2008-10-06 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr

This is happening because if you simply click on a link to open a PDF
document it will normally not be readable with JAWS unless the document is
one that can be opened with Adobe or some other conversion program.
Otherwise, there is nothing but silence.

The solution is to find the link to the PDF document, press the third key on
the row above the numpad, and then scroll down to save target as. Save the
PDF somewhere on the computer where you can find it; then locate the saved
file and then open the PDF with whatever conversion software you are using.
If the PDF is an image or picture with no text, there is no solution, as far
as I know.

Hi:

I am trying to help a JAWS 9 user open a PDF document from a link. PDF
version 9. The message is that the document is being processed, but it
doesn't open. At first I thought it might be an Adobe problem, but when she
hits insertF7 on any webpage no links list comes up either.

1. Should I have her do a repare on JAWS?

2. Should I have her go back to Adobe version 8, and if so where might I
find the link?

I don't know if the two things are related or not, she just really needs the
PDF documents to open! Any help on either or both of these problems would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks, Deb.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] getting new computer and wondering about requirements

Hello:
I am planning to purchase a new desktop computer in the next couple of
weeks. I am running Windows XP and can get a computer with this on it. I
am also running Jaws 7.1 or 6.2. I am wondering what amount of Ram I should
be looking for and what type of sound card and any other specifics I may
need to know about. This may include clock speed and more. Hope this is
not off topic but just don't know what will work best with Jaws.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Reading Tables In Microsoft Werd

2008-09-09 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr
If you are comfortable using Excel, another option is to select the tables,
copy them, and then paste them into an excel file. Personally, I find it
easier to read and navigate tables in excel rather than word.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Fw: TV listings

I haven't checked mine lately, but I also have Cox.

As I remember it, there is a box at the top of the page where you can put in
what date and time you want to check and then you will get 3 hours within
that selection.

Subject: TV listings

Hi guys,
I know we have been on this topic before, but I never paid attention because
I wasn't having a problem. I have Cox cable and they have recently changed
the way they display their TV listings on line. There used to be a text
version so that I could tell exactly what time the program would come on.
Now everything is in a grid and you can only guess because they display
three hours at a time. Does anyone know how to read this with jaws or know
of TV listings that work well with jaws? Thanks for any help. Cox gets
their listings from zap2it.com.

Thanks in advance.

If I understand your question, don't try to open the PDF file without saving
it first. When you wish to read a PDF file, hit the right mouse button and
scroll to save target as. Then save the file where you would like to save
it. Then open the save file with whatever conversion software you have.

When I try to download an Adobe PDF file, Adobe detects I am using

Re: [JAWS-Users] printer is not printing

2008-08-10 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr.
First, make sure your printer is being recognized. Hit control P and tab
through the various options until you come to the one that should announce
what printer you have. If that printer is not listed, there is your problem
perhaps; the computer is not recognizing your printer.

Also, make sure all cabling is tight and that the cabling is in the correct
place.

You might also try turning off your computer and printer. Then start your
computer; after that is started then turn on your printer.

Re: [JAWS-Users] outlook 2003 problem outlook 2003 problem

2008-06-26 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr
Let me try!

Maybe it's just me, but in JAWS9, the insert A feature doesn't seem to work.

To be sure there are no attachments, hit the save attachment button on the
menu. If there are no attachments, JAWS should say there are no
attachments in this message.

The only other thing I can think of right now, is that perhaps Outlook is
minimized; that could impact what JAWS is trying to tell you.

Re: [JAWS-Users] MS-Word table to Excel

Try the following:

1. Open the table that is in word;
2. Open a workbook in excel;
3. Select the word document with Control A;
4. Copy the document with control C
5. Paste the document, control v, into the excel workbook.

Your table, initially appearing as a table in word, should now appear in
cells, columns and rows in your excel workbook.

Re: [JAWS-Users] a question on how to get a Power Braille 65/80 workingwith Jaws

2008-05-03 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr.
Let me try!

I think your first mistake is using a printer port. The PowerBraille is not
the same as a printer. I don't know how new your unit is but on the old
units, you needed a serial connection running between your computer and the
PowerBraille. I am assuming that on newer models this connection can be
accomplished by using a usb port.

Also, make sure that when you install JAWS, you tell it to recognize the
exact type of Braille display you have. There is a list of Braille devices
when you install JAWS, and you must be sure to check the braille device you
have installed.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] a question on how to get a Power Braille 65/80
workingwith Jaws

Hello there,

I am wondering if someone can help me out here. I have a Power Braille 80
and I want to get it working with Jaws.

I am using Windows Vista Home Edition Premium.

Here are the steps I have followed:

1. I connected the PB 80 to the power supply and charged the battery.

2. I have a parallel cable going in to the only parallel port I have which
is a printer port and it is considered lpt1.

3. I then go to the Synth and Braille Manager and tell it I want to use the
PB 80 on LPT1 And check the Pb80 display check box with in the Synth and
Braille Manager.

4. I then say finish to the Synth and Braille Manager and start Jaws as
asked by Jaw's executable.

5. I restart Jaws and then Jaws is complicated by a Windows error which
says that the application meaning Jaws will not run.

I have two questions here. Does the Pb 80 need bidirectional support? I am
assuming yes since it needs to talk both ways? Secondly, are there any
other settings that any one can suggest?

Have a wonderful day.

8.1
If Adobe 8.1 is properly installed on your computer, go to my computer,
scroll to the folder where the pdf file is saved, and hit enter. Adobe 8.1
will immediately begin to convert the file for you. Then you have the option
in the adobe menu to save the file as a text file, which you can open in
word.
Remember if the pdf file you have is an image or picture file, adobe 8.1
cannot convert it. Instead, you will get a message that says empty
document.

I'm reading that table correctly. I thought it was under paragraph, but I
am lost. All I want to do is double space my document.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about how too save attachments.

2008-04-07 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr
When you have opened the message:

1. Press the alt key to bring up the files menu.
2. Scroll down until you get to save attachments
3. Hit enter.
4. Type the directory and file name where you want the attachment saved
5. Then close the message.

Until you do this a few times, don't delete the message until you check to
see if you have saved the attachment correctly, or that it is saved where
you intended it to be saved.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Question about how too save attachments.

Good afternoon everyone,

I'm sorry for asking such an obvious question like this to the list, But I
need some very helpful advice, with regard too saving an attachment. A
while ago, I purchased a tutorial from Freedomscientific on the use of
outlook express six. Unfortunately,I didn't see anything on the tapes that
would giv me an indication on just how too do this. I even went into the
save as dialog of outlook express sicx,to try and find that option , but I
don't see anything in there that says, save as an attachment. If someone
would please be so kind as too give me step by step instructionson just how
to save an attachment, I would be most greatful.

Thank's in advance,

Al

The blog will go on the internet with the other 8 million plus blogs that
are there. Tell your friends about it; use your email contact list to let
others know about it. That is all you can do. If you were trying to sell
something, or trying to make money with your blog, then you could buy
pay-per-click advertising. Otherwise, just enjoy it; realize that you have
created something that is your own.

Hi.

There have been a few posts to this list about Jaws announcing subscript and
superscript when reading a word document. I've posted several messages but I
can't get rid of it. I've been into the speech and sounds manager in Jaws
configuration and changed the attributes to ignore. I then scanned another
document into word and Jaws still announced subscript and superscript. I
then when back into the speech and sounds manager settings and deleted the
attributes so that they're no longer in the list and Jaws is still saying
subscript and superscript when I scan a document into word.

Please can someone tell me how to stop this as it's frustrating me now.

Thanks.

Sue.

The strangest thing happened when I was trying to check out the
Sappi 5

not
compiled. I saved them, but it still doesn't work right, so I am sure that
there was an error of some kind with reinstall. I'll try installing it

[JAWS-Users] JAWS9 AND POWERBRAILLE 40

2008-03-18 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr.
On a PowerBraille 40, there are navigation keys above the cells which permit
you to move the focus to a particular cell by hitting one of the navigation
keys. However, in JAWS9, when you hit one of these navigation keys while in
a word document, JAWS takes you either to the top or bottom of your
document. Is there a fix for this bug?

Subject: [JAWS-Users] computing power

I'm planning to purchase a new computer (desktop). Are there hardware
options which help JAWS achieve peak performance? For example, should I
assume that

faster and more CPU speed and power is better than less? Should I assume
that quadcore is better for JAWS than duocore processing? Since I believe
JAWS

works by 'grabbing' information which is sent to the video display, should I
assume that the faster this process works, the better it is for JAWS? Also,

should I assume that JAWS performance is enhanced with more memory and
faster memory?

I'll be using new computer primarily for downloading music, web access,
email, and some occasional word processing only.

By the way, I'm using JAWS with software synthesizer. In the 'old days' of
DOS, I used to use a hardware synth, and found the responsiveness of my
screen

readers to be vastly superior to the software synths. Since I understand the
software synths gobble-up some of the CPUs power, I guess I assume the more

processing power and speed the better?

Any info and comments welcome -

I just installed jaws9 on my office computer. I still have jaws7 on my home

The document I started writing on my home computer, I modified on my office
computer. When I tried to work on the document on my home computer, the
Braille display will not display the portion prepared with jaws9. Jaws
reads it but the Braille does not display.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Maneuvering JAWS On A Web Page

2008-03-07 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr.

The way that sighted people see a web page is different from the way jaws
displays it for us. Jaws displays the page in one long column. What your
wife sees on the right of the screen is eventually displayed by jaws, but
further down the column you are reading. You have to keep scrolling further
down until you find it.

My wife tells me that on most web pages there will be like three rows of
items. Many times the
place where I am needing to go is in the third row, all the way over to the
right. How can I get
JAWS to go over to that point without having to wade through both of the
first two rows to get to
where I need to be? I am using Windows XP and JAWS 7.0.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Problems using Microsoft Excel with Jaws

2008-03-05 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr.
I have always had a sense that JAWS struggles with the Excel program.

Excel is slower than other programs to load. You do have to wait until JAWS
stops speaking.

It does sometimes happen that for whatever reason, the worksheet does
lock-up and you cannot move around through the worksheet. My solution for
this is to restart your computer.

Hi Victor,

In my case, no matter how long I wait, I cannot move around the worksheet. I
wait until Jaws finishes speaking the messages and I wait longer and I am
still unable to move around the worksheet. I have even left it for about
5-10 minutes with no luck.

I wish I could narrow down what is happening and I am still convinced that
there is a bug or setting in Jaws that is causing the problem.

Thanks,
Ryan

HI Ryan,

Speaking strictly from experience, any time I open an Excel sheet, this
message does come up, and I simply wait until Jaws starts telling me the row

and column I am on, at that point, I can simply go through the sheet with
the arrow keys.

In other words, a bit of patience goes a long way. Smile.

Just wait a bit once you hear that spoken message, and see if Jaws
eventually says what I mentioned above.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Seeking Tips for Using JAWS with a Braille Display

Hello all. I've attained the use of a braille display for a couple weeks
as an evaluation toward a likely purchase of one. I want to be sure to
get the full experience of using a braille display before having to give
this on back, so hope that the braille display users among you can
provide me some guidance as to features that you do or don't use of your
braille display and screen reader combo. I've thrown some questions out
to guide your thoughts, but I'm surely not limited to these questions in
terms of the feedback I'd find helpful. Thanks in advance for your help,
and I look forward to reading your responses.

How do you use your braille display?
Answer: I use it whenever I use my computer and JAWS. As a Braille user, I
find it invaluable. I could work in speech alone, but working without a
Braille display significantly reduces my productivity.

For what tasks would you not want to live without your braille display? For
what tasks is it less than desirable and why?
Answer: In writing a document, it is important to know where to put the
comma. With the place marker buttons on the PowerBraille 40, you can quickly
put the cursor exactly where you want the comma to be. Also, it is very
helpful in working with numbers and making sure your number is correct.
When I pay a bill online, it is one thing to listen to the number you have
typed; it is quite important to be able to put your fingers on the number
and make sure you have entered it correctly.

Do you primarily use it for proofreading, screen access, replacement for
speech, access to text only, or some combination of these?
Answer: I use it in combination with Speech.

Do you use its ability to input text? If so, is that your primary, or
even your sole, means of interaction with your PC?
Answer: It is very helpful in entering text, because you can read back what
you wrote on the Braille line.

How much customization of the display's key commands do you do?
Answer: Very little.

Do you use your screen reader's ability to output in grade II? How
often?
Answer: Never. The primary reason for not using grade 2, is that the
document you output, and the one that sighted people will read, will not be
in Grade 2.

Do you browse the web using braille, and if so, do you read text with
braille and navigate with speech, use braille for both, or some other
combination?
Answer: Here again, I use both.

If you use braille to browse the web for text or navigation, do you
encounter situations where content on the web is difficult to access
using braille alone? If so, what problems do you encounter?
Answer: It would be difficult, but not impossible, to navigate the WEB
without using Braille and speech at the same time.

Answer: My final comment:
The more proficient you are with using Braille, the more useful you will
find a Braille display.

accessibility with the use of adaptive technology.
Once not so long ago, a testing program was available called bobby, whose
purpose was to give web sites a rating for accessibility, and a diagnosis
on how the site could be made more accessible, if necessary.
It would seem that the program Bobby is no longer available to the general
public, can anyone shed any light on this, and whether there are any
alternative programs that can do the same thing?

Subject: [JAWS-Users] [JFW] JAWS at startup

Group,

I too have had JAWS (7.0, Win XP Pro) belch and die during
startup. I noticed that Skype and JAWS both come up at about the same time.

JAWS is a wonderful program, but IMHO is unfortunately a real
resource hog, particularly if one is using the Eloquence
synthesizer. My solution was to take Skype out of the startup
sequence, then start it manually afterward. Since doing that, JAWS
has had no problems loading/starting. Also, AVG and JAWS seem to
slug it out once in awhile, with JAWS usually ending up the loser.

Am I wrong in describing JAWS as a resource hog? Does anyone have
actual stats on how much (i.e. what percent of) system resources JAWS
requires? Is there anything that can be done to tweak the memory
manager in Windows XP to accomodate JAWS requirements?

Thanks.

Jaws only reads the first two desktop selections. My documents might be
called 1 of so many one time, and 28 of so many another time; is it moving
around my desktop? Also sometimes when I hit windows m and then try to hit a
letter like m for my documents, it will act like it's reading an html page.
For example, it will say there are no frames on this page. The people at FS
were stumped when I called, but I had less information to give them than I
do now.
Any ideas what might be wrong. I'd really like to hear every desktop
shortcut when I press the right letter.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Laptop Advice

2008-02-04 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr
One factor, not yet mentioned in this thread, which is extremely important,
is what do you do if the machine needs repair. My experience is that
laptops are far less durable than desktops, especially with heavy use. The
question is for any brand you buy, can you get it fixed locally or do you
have to ship it out of state; and how long are you going to be without a
machine that you may be depending upon for your job or for your education.

I beg to differ with you on that score regarding Toshiba laptops not
 having

There are a series of four keys on the right of the keyboard, they are

I'm typing this on a Toshiba laptop right now.

It's a lot of car to drive as the saying goes, but it is a very nice and in
my opinion stable operating system. There are instructions on basic setup
initial settings and so forth up on the web site. I never had 98 so can't
speak to that end of it but coming from millennium to XP I was pleasantly
pleased with the upgrade.

This works fine.

Click on the internet address to take you to the radio station's website.
That will take you to a screen.
One of the links on the screen is listenlivebutton.
Hit enter on that link.
In a very few seconds, you hear singing or talking.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Video intercept manager trouble

2007-12-30 Thread Russell J. Thomas, Jr.

I had this same problem with a laptop. I sent a detailed question to JAWS
Tech-Support, and I got back a very helpful answer. The solution was very
complicated, and I could not have made the changes I needed to make without
assistance from a Techie.

Try submitting a written question rather than simply talking to someone on
the phone. Be sure to give an exact description of what type and model of
computer you are using and an exact description of the operating system.

Re: [JAWS-Users] receiving attachments

2007-10-14 Thread Russell J. Thomas
After opening the email, go to the files menu and scroll down until you
reach save attachments. Hit enter. Then type in the drive and folder where
you want the attachment saved, and the name you want the file to have.

This is the only way I know how to do it in JAWS 8. In this regard, JAWS 8
is a step back from JAWS 7. In JAWS 7, you could hit insert
A on the attachment and open or save the attachment. You cannot do that in
JAWS 8.

Re: [JAWS-Users] combo box question

2007-09-29 Thread Russell J. Thomas
I am not sure what problems you are having with mapquest. I find it one of
the easiest sites to use with JAWS. In fact, it appears that they made
changes in the site to make it more jaws friendly.

If you want directions from one place to another, go on to mapquest.com, hit
insert 7 to get a list of links; when you hear directions or driving
directions, hit enter.

Then you go to a page where you fill out a form as to where you are and
where you want to go. It will ask for address, state, city and zip code.
Once you go into insert mode, fill in this data in each box and hit the tab
key to go from box to box.

After you fill in where you are, there is some other information that you
can ignore if you want; simply scroll down until you get to the same type
of fill-in boxes for where you want to go. After you fill in those fields,
there is more information you probably don't care about. There is also some
advertising (remember this is free, so they have to run ads. At some point
Jaws announces get directions. Hit enter and then your step-by-step map
will appear. At that point, you can also choose to have the directions
emailed to you.

Hope this helps.

Some web pages are designed this way. If you open the combo box first
with Alt DownArrow, and then downarrow to the item you want, that should
resolve it.

I have encountered some combo boxs after I go to arrow down, the first
item in the list automatically opens even if it's not the one I wanted,
why does this happen?

 Becky,
That is the command. If you are doing this in IE however, press enter
first to get into forms mode, then alt down arrow.

 Subject: [JAWS-Users] combo box question

 Hi all.
Would someone please tell me the JAWS command to open a combo box.
It's the command that will allow you to arrow down a combo box without

activating the first down arrow. I thought it was alt down arrow, but

 that doesn't work.

 Thanks for any help.

 Becky

Re: [JAWS-Users] Reading Text in Word

2007-09-14 Thread Russell J. Thomas
I think there might be a bookmarking function in Word, but don't ask me how
to use it.

I have a very non-technical solution. When I want a mark a document so I
can return to it later, I simply put in the string qqq. When I return to
the document I do a find for qqq, and there it is.

Hi there. This may sound silly but I used it when I was studying for tests.
There may be a more technical way to do this. But all I did was insert a
label which was unique to the surrounding text. I used *here, 02-03-2007*
for example.
That kind of string wouldn't appear in a normal text file so then all I had
to do was use the Word Find function to locate that label.
It worked quickly and reliably every time.
After locating the label, I just deleted it and then inserted another one
where needed.

 Hey gang,

I was wondering if there was a placemarker function in JAWS for Word like

there is for the web... I've got a lot of texts for school that require
days worth of reading. I was hoping there was a way to save my spot so i
could turn off my machine and come right back to that spot when I turn it
back on. Thanks for any info!
