[JAWS-Users] mystery solved about messages but don't know how to keep it from happening again

2014-08-30 Thread Jamie Prater
Hi, all, I've been mentioning and complaining for weeks about not getting
messages from this list. Well, I checked my webmail with
att.net/bellsouth.net, and guess what? It flagged the jaws list mail and the
skype English mail as spam. I had to check it as not spam and get it to put
it in my in box so the messages would download. I'm not sure how to fix this
permanently as I don't want to go in every so often and do this but until I
know different, I might not have a choice. Thanks and have a blessed day.

One solution for running Malware Bytes is to schedule the scans when your
machine is up and running.

Several times, I opened the Malware Bytes application and navigated around
the window. Later I discovered the program was running scans when I was in
the window; however, I don't know what I did to cause this event to occur.
You may have to have some sighted assistance to schedule scans; I don't
remember if I was able to schedule them independently. Try using the OCR
function in JAWS when you find instances of no text being read by JAWS.

Hi, all, I have used and am currently using the latest of jaws and nvda and
have been unable to use the latest versions of malware bytes to keep my
computer clean. I want to do this on a regular basis but I updated the
version and can't get around it wanting to install a trial version of the

clues as to how to run a scan with this seemingly uncooperative version of

already use Microsoft security essentials? Any help would be most graciously

Hi, am I getting through to the list? I had to have somebody sighted to help
me update and run malware bytes since it is so unaccessible. Somebody says
they are supposed to make it accessible again in the future and time will
tell. I think if we all wrote to developers we could make them listen to us
and bring accessibility back. The technician who helped me said he'd send me
a link so I could fill out a form to tell of our trouble with the program.
He said it should be jaws friendly so I plan on passing it along. Thanks

[JAWS-Users] possible disappearing folders in outlook 2010

Hi, all, I feel stupid bringing this up but about a month ago, I created two
new folders in outlook 2010 to accommodate email messages I wanted to keep a

today to see about the folders, they were not a part of the list.
Unfortunately, since I thought I'd have easy access to the folders by
hitting a letter, I failed to remember their names, and guess what, now, I
can't find the folders anywhere. I guess I didn't need the folders enough
if I did this but the folders seemed to create successfully, so where did
they go? Any ideas? Thanks and have a blessed day.

[JAWS-Users] how to sort outlook message so current messages will be at bottom and old messages at top

Hi, I want to sort my messages in outlook where the oldest ones will be at

where the newest ones are at the top and oldest at the bottom and I want it
fixed back. Any help would be appreciated as this outlook uses different
words than outlook express did.

In Outlook 2010, to sort the messages in a folder, go to the view tab of the
ribbon while you're on the list of messages in that folder. If you're using
JAWS virtual menus, arrow down to the arrangement submenu. Press right
arrow to get to arrange by and then press enter to open. Arrow up or down
to the choice you want and press enter. If you're not using JAWS virtual

arrange by and press enter. Then arrow up or down to find the item you want

There are 2 ways to access the outlook contacts.

The first way is,
Ctrl+shift+b=book,
This will land you on an search edit field, So you could type in a contact's
name to search, Or, you could tab once to get into the list of contacts, Now
use your arrow keys, If you would want to send a message to a particular
contact while you're inside the contacts, Just arrow to the contacts
name/email, Now press ctrl+n=new message, Note, the person's information, is
already placed into the to field, thus, you land on the subject, If you tab,
you're placed into the body of the message.
The second way to access you're contacts,
Ctrl+#3 on the numbers row,
You land inside the contacts,
Tab once to the edit field, type a contacts name,
Shift+tab, the name should be their.

Adding contact;

Here's a couple ways you can do this.

The first way, is,

Press ctrl+shift+c
This will place you on a screen where you can add a contact, Use the tab key
to access the criteria, Once you've completed filling in the various fields,
Press escape key, and say yes to save.
The second way is,

1, open a message from the person whom you wish to add/reply to,

2, now shift+tab until you hear;
From: the person's name and email address; Move your left arrow to highlight
the name/email

3, press the applications key,
Up arrow and enter on,
Add to outlook contacts,

Note, your now being placed into a screen with all the information, Name,
email address, Etc.
If your satisfied with the nameemail,
Just press the escape key, your being ask, if you wish to save this
information, just say yes.

Hope this helps.

[JAWS-Users] jaws and flash

2014-02-24 Thread Jamie Prater
Hi, all, as people put more and more flash content on their websites, they
make things less and less accessible to jaws users. This is very
frustrating particularly since it appears that youtube is one of the sites
among many others whose creators have elected to use something very
inaccessible to screen readers. Is there something I do not know about jaws
that I can use as far as keystrokes or something like that to get around
this problem? I've been using jaws since 1998, so if I am missing
something, I am open to learning something new. If this is not the case,
are there plans to bridge the gap between jaws and flash and similar
content? Thanks and have a blessed day.

You can still use the shortcut key strokes shift, control and F for font and
shift, control and P for the font size respectively.

I took a quick look, and it goes without saying that you need to have a
Google account of some kind,
but I did not see any reference to 25 GB of storage, only 15.
This may be an alternative to DropBox, until as Google is so well known for
decides to change something.
Not only did the recent update to DropBox make it virtually impossible to
access it via the system tray, it affected the other icons there as well.
When the DB icon was showing in the tray, I couldn't get a proper context
menu for the other ones.

Greg,
This sounds very similar to a problem I was having on a XP system. I don't
remember specifically what the culprit was, but I believe that it was
another program--possibly the software for my Samsung printer/scanner/fax.
Every couple of minutes, it was doing something which caused Jaws to mess
up.

So, if this is a new behavior, try to determine what has changed on your
system just prior to the problem appearing. It may be something as innocent
as updated drivers, an application software update or even a Windows patch
Tuesday. Was it happening prior to the install of the Jaws 15 beta? Which
leads me to a real pet peeve of mine--folks testing out software, especially

beta software, on the machine which they rely on daily.

I'm sure that others on the list will chime in with other possible
solutions.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Ongoing problem with Outlook 2007 using Jaws 14 or
15beta

I am trying to identify why Outlook 2007 on my Windows 7 64 bit Toshiba
notebook computer does not work properly with either Jaws 14 or Jaws 15
beta. I have spoken to both Fs tech support and Microsoft accessibility
support without any success. The problem is that when I open Outlook 2007
in Jaws 14 or 15 beta Jaws will read emails properly for a while, 3 to 5
minutes or so. However at some point Jaws stops reading emails that are
 in
html format. Jaws presents them in a strange format with many garbled
 text
and the html commands such as t to move to tables and h to move to
 headings
do not work. Instead the letter t or h will appear in the body of the
email. And the cursor key (+ on the numpad) says pc cursor rather than
virtual pc cursor which it says when Jaws is working properly when reading
open html emails. If I close Outlook and reopen it Jaws will work
 properly
again for a few minutes and then revert to not displaying html emails
 correctly.

Fs tech support has been unable to duplicate this problem on their
 computers
and have received no reports from other Jaws users with my problem. FS
 had
me completely uninstall Jaws 14 and do a clean reinstall but that did not
eliminate the problem. they also checked all my Jaws 14 settings and they
 seem to be working properly.

Microsoft support says it must be a Fs issue since my Outlook 2007
installation looks fine to them. They checked all my settings for Outlook
2007 and nothing they did eliminated the problem. I also ran the Office
diagnostic from the Outlook 2007 help menu and it found no problems with
 my
 Outlook 2007 program.

So I am wondering what could be happening on my system to cause this to
happen. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
 Thanks,
 Greg Washington

Yes it is helpful for some users, that's the thing that I want to happen to
my jaws, to speak webpage loading progress. I also ask the same question to

progress every time there's changes. But this method didn't work both to my

[JAWS-Users] jaws 15 saying document on some web pages and out look 2007 and extra voices

2013-09-14 Thread jamie
Hi all
I can say i have had this issue on jaws 14 and jaws 15 beta of jaws saying
document on some web pages using windows7 32 bit
And also out look 2007 where presson escape on some emails wood cause jaws to
take ages to close email and then when you open a email it wood bring up a edit
box without you telling it to reply to the email as well on both 14 and 15 this
has been the case
But jaws 15 beta is really good so far apart from they 2 things i have found
and i still like the jaws normal voice i do not like the extra voices at all as
i feel i can not understand them clearly and the extra voices miss out the
letter d in the word and for example so when typing with extra voices the word
and wood say an even if you had the d in it

Susan, I no longer have jaws 12 installed but I think the same steps will
work. Bring jaws into focus. Then use alt u. arrow down to sound cards. you
then you can select what sound card or head phones that you want jaws to
use.

HI Susan, I want to make shore I understand what's going on. Are you saying
that you can get windows sounds, and jaws, but not if you plug in the
speekers? if your using more then 1 sound card it would be possable for jaws
to go threw 1 sound card, while windows sounds go threw the other.

As for your hubby, well, you could just keep asking him to fix it over and
over, and maybe he will ither fix it for good, or simply explaine to you how
he did it so you will stop bugging him.

if that don't work, try blackmail. LOL! smiley, just kidding.

Hi listers,
i apologize for the novice question, but have reached the end of my
admittedly limited patience.

Quite simply, I'm running JAWS 12 on a Windows 7 system with a
Realtech HD soundcard. With my previous SB Live card in XP it was a
simple matter of plug and play to swap between headphones and speakers
but this does not seem to be the case now. While I generally work with
headphones, there are times when I wish to switch to speaker
configuration and would like instructions on how to do this. My
sighted husband is available in case of major disasters, but his usual
approach is to disable JAWS while stumbling toward whatever solution
and he is not particularly good at explaining his steps so that I can
learn them. In this situation he had configured the speakers
temporarily, but at reboot I was unable to bring up anything but
system sounds via speakers, though again headphones worked fine. I've
attempted to look around the audio manager and speakers dialogues but
still seem to be missing something, so step by step help would be
best. Many thanks.

Susan

I enjoy Rhapsody. www.rhapsody.com I have produced a tutorial on using
Rhapsody with Jaws and another screen reader. You can find it at the
following URL:
www.accesswatch.info
The cost of the tutorial is $9.95. You can listen to 25 free tracks per
month on Rhapsody or you can sign up to buy and burn tracks for $12.99 per
month. Thanks.

not afraid to pay, just want to be able to navigate it without getting

Re: [JAWS-Users] Putting Jaws to Sleep

2008-02-15 Thread Jamie Pauls
Launch Money Talks and then press Jaws key plus 6 on the top of the keyboard
to open the Jaws configuration manager. Press Alt S to access the Set User
Options menu and press up arrow once to advanced. Press enter and check the
checkbox to enable sleep mode and tab to ok. Save the configuration file
with CTRL+S and you're good to go. If you ever want to undo the process,
Just launch the configuration manager from within Money Talks again. I think
you'll need to alt-tab to it and then it will speak. Just uncheck the
checkbox and save the config file. HTH

can't remember now how to do it.

Thanks for all the help.

Hi,
I've found WordPress's administration interface to be very accessible and
intuitive; it is driven by links and buttons, all of which can be accessed.
the buttons are also accessible via hotkeys which are listed as well. (These
may differ slightly whether you are using IE or Firefox; JAWS lists them
provided you have hotkeys set to speak..) Other weblogging software might
include Typepad, LiveJournal, and Blogger. I don't know much about these
other interfaces; someone else may be able to enlighten you further.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Looking for PC Maintenance/AntiVirus Software

Hello.

I'm running JAWS9.0 and Windows XP Home edition with all the latest updates.
For years, I'd been a satisfied user of Symantec's Norton line of products
for internet security and system maintenance.

As I'm sure happened to many here, when I bought Norton 2007, I found many
of the interfaces pretty inaccessible with JAWS. My subscription is about to
subscribe, and I'm wondering what other JAWS users might recommend. I
figure, my choices are:

Renew my subscription to Norton Internet Security and Systemworks for
another year and struggle along Take a chance on Norton 360 or Norton
Systemworks 2008 and hope they work with JAWS Or try a whole new program.

I don't mind paying, and of course a free option is always welcome...But I'm
wondering what system security-type programs you guys would recommend. I
saw one at Best Buy that sounds like it'd have everything I need, called
System Security 8 by AvanQuest Software. Does anyone here have any
experience using it with JAWS, and how well does it work? Another one I saw
that looked pretty good for my needs was Microsoft's Windows OneCare Version
2.

The pro to both is that they're both cheaper than upgrading Norton.

Thanks for any help anyone can give.

I think it is just a personal preference. I have used Winamp for years and
it is what I have grown accustomed to using. WMP is a good media player and
if it does what you need it to do, then by all means keep using it.
I do find that it is easier to set up play lists in Winamp though. Also I
like being able to create bookmarks within a file easily in Winamp.
I also like being able to skip forward or back in 5 second intervals in
Winamp not to mention the ability to jump to any point within a file.
You can probably do all of these things using WMP, but I'm not totally sure
about that.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Winamp and WMP 11

Hi,

I have been looking at just about every version of winamp over the last week
or so. I used to use Winamp several years ago but when I purchased a new
Laptop I tried using WMP 11 and have found it very good.

Please can somebody explain to me what I am missing by not using Winamp!

I do realise that it all depends on what you wish to do with your player and
that most of you will just think, Oh well whatever works for you but in my
case, Rippping, Burning using a Library, creating Play lists etc all are
very accessible using WMP but to be honest although I have had some success
with Winamp versions which includes using down loaded scripts from the site,
I am coming to the conclusion that WMP 11 is the thing to use.

Please tell me why most of you prefer Winamp and why you may think it is
better than the standard Windows Player.

Look forward to hearing your comments.

regards

Graham

I am also having problems with Goldwave and Jaws 9. You are the only other
person who has mentioned that on this list as far as I can tell. Jaws 8 also
works for me.

I have the same problem while I am in goldwave. I don't know what the
problem is either. I can turn jaws 8 on and I don't have the problem.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] jaws 9 generating lots of error reports

I don't know if anyone has experienced this, and I have sent a letter to
tech support but thought I'd ask the group about this as well. The
application file for Jaws will pop up, and it seems this happens every day
now, and say an error report is being generated and there is a send and
don't send button. I usually send the report, but sometimes whether I hit
send or don't send the speech will go out so I must re-start. The sad thing
is, I'm not able to read exactly what's causing these error reports. I went
to details and even using Jaws cursor I haven't found a way to read the
error number or report so I could be more specific with you or with F.S. I
wondered if perhaps Jaws 9 gets mad at my ATI TV card or at the Winamp
plug-in I use to play TV shows--since we can't get TV to work well through
just the ATI card. But then I thought I tweaked something and fixed that,
but today's error report seemed to be generated after a Norton virus scan
that is automatic. I'm just not sure how to pinpoint what the problem is
since I can't actually see the report. Just wondered if others have
experienced this, and how you were able to find what caused it.

I found Winamp v. 3.62 to be the most stable with JFW versions prior to 7.0.
This however is just my opinion.

The biggest problem I've found with later WinAmp versions is that the
library is nearly inaccessible, and the playlist editor seems much harder to
use. This could be the result of user error (mine) or something intrinsic
to WinAmp, but I never used to have the problems I'm experiencing now with
WinAmp 5.11.

Did you try to using the Jaws scripts for Winamp?

Thanks. I guess I should be a bit more clear on my thinking. I was playing
with CDEX the other day and found that I could not seem to access the rip
function in the Winamp library after I had done so. I did not install ASPI
drivers for CDEX, hoping it would work without them. It did not. I decided
that maybe I had broken Winamp's ripping functions somehow and that I might
as well play with an older version of the program while I was messing
around. I then found the PC World article which piqued my interest. I
downloaded the 2.95 version and tried to extract a track from a CD. I had to
use the mouse movement commands to click the button and got an error about
not being able to open the encoder or something like that. I then
uninstalled CDEX and decided to try the current version of Winamp with the
scripts for the library. I find that the library does work much better with

Hmm this is very strange, as I have jaws v9.0.515 running here with word
2003 and it works great, better, in fact, than jaws 8. I can't remember if
in your original post you said if you had reinstalled microsoft office, if
not then I would try that.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] More info about my Jaws and Word 2003 Problem

I talked to a very knowledgeable tech support person from Freedom
Scientific today who is totally stumped by my Jaws and Word problem.
Using Jaws 8 and Word 2003, everything works as expected. Using Jaws
9, nothing reads in Word. Read current line yields no information.
Arrow keys say blank. Read by paragraph sort of works. If I do a
control-home to go to the top of the file and check my cursor
position, it does not move to row 1 column 1. It tends to stay where I
was last typing such as column 16. I can use the Jaws review keys and
read the text just fine. Insert F properly reads font and color
information. Insert Q tells me that settings for Word are loaded
winword.exe. I have unchecked the task pane. I have told the standard
and formatting toolbars to use two rows. I disabled everything in MS
Config and made sure that JawsVid was hooked in the registry. I am
running the latest update of Jaws. I have uninstalled Jaws with all
shared files and reinstalled. My gut tells me it is a script problem
but I can't imagine what it would be or why. Any help would be
appreciated. FS is supposed to call me again Friday, but I may not be
around. I don't want to mess things up too badly if I really do need a
high-level person to help me with this, but I thought given the
information I have provided someone on this list might actually have a
suggestion. Turning on enhanced edit support under text processing in
the configuration manager does work, but I understand it should not be
 necessary to do this. Thanks.

[JAWS-Users] A real Word 2003 puzzler with Jaws 9

2007-12-11 Thread Jamie Pauls
Greetings list members:

Today I uninstalled Jaws 9, removed all shared files and reinstalled the
program from the CD. I uninstalled Microsoft Office 2003 Small Business
Edition and reinstalled it. I installed Service Pack 3 for Office. I set the
zoom to both 50% and 75% in Word. I am still unable to make Jaws read
anything in Word without checking the Enhanced Edit Support under text
processing in the configuration manager. Does anyone want to hazard a guess
as to why this is? Thanks.

[JAWS-Users] More info on my GoldWave Issues with Jaws 9 beta

2007-11-10 Thread Jamie Pauls
I recently reported that after installing the scripts for the latest version
of GoldWave and updating the beta of Jaws a few times, I began hearing the
Windows default sound periodically when recording or playing back a file in
GoldWave. Jaws has crashed twice during my attempts to use GoldWave as well.
I have since installed the scripts in Jaws 8 and used the program
successfully. I don't recall how to temporarily unload scripts in a program
for troubleshooting purposes and can't locate this information in the Jaws
help file. Is anyone else experiencing problems with GoldWave and the latest
beta of Jaws 9, and would someone be so kind as to help me with my
troubleshooting efforts? I'm not sure whether to file this as a bug report
since the scripts are from a third-party developer and I'm not sure how
Freedom Scientific treats this situation during a beta cycle. Thanks.

I thought of that after I fired off the message. I don't recall the option

You are allowed to have any number of different versions of JAWS on the same
computer. therefore, obvious question: how is JAWS to know which of them to
assign a 'default' hot key to?

[JAWS-Users] Odd behavior with GoldWave and Jaws 9 beta

2007-11-09 Thread Jamie Pauls
I am a new GoldWave user so please keep that in mind as you read this. I
installed the latest Jaws scripts for the latest version of Gold
Wave and all seemed to be well. At some point I noticed the Windows default
sound playing at various times during my recording and playing of files in
GoldWave. I muted Jaws speech in the program and noticed the same thing. I
then unloaded Jaws and tried another screen reader. The odd behavior went
away. I assume this is a problem with the scripts in relation to the latest
beta of Jaws, but I'm not sure. Is anyone else experiencing this behavior?
By the way, regarding the problems I was having when saving a file in
GoldWave as an MP3 file, I discovered that there are various settings such
as MP3 mono and MP3 stereo in GoldWave. I was saving a mono file in stereo;
that's why I was hearing the strange artifacts when playing the file back
using another program. Thanks to all who offered help with that one.

[JAWS-Users] Possible bug with how Jaws 9 reads in Windows Explorer

2007-10-26 Thread Jamie Pauls
I want to run this one by the list in case it is either a known issue or has
already been reported assuming I am not the only person who can duplicate
this.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Press Windows key+R to open the run dialog and type c:.

2. Type pr to move to program files and press enter.

3. Use arrow keys to confirm that Jaws reads the list of files and folders
properly.

4. Type the letter G to move to the GoldWave folder. Notice that Jaws stops
speaking. The up and down arrow keys no longer read as they should, but read
current line always yields the desired result.

5. Close this window with Alt+F4

6. Press Windows key+E to launch my computer.

7. Open program files and use letter commands to jump to the desired folder.
Open it if you wish with right arrow. Notice that Jaws reads properly.

8. Close all windows in Windows Explorer with the left-arrow key. This time
use the tab key to move into the list of files and folders and again follow
steps 2 through 4. Notice that you get the same result.

2007-10-19 Thread Jamie Pauls
Real.com is requiring Rhapsody users to upgrade to version 4 of the program.
To the best of my knowledge, there are no new scripts for this version. It
