Re: [JAWS-Users] Using the Refresh this PC in W-10
Jim Will the update for the creator automatically be a part of the windows update? Kathy -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Jim Flusche Sent: Thursday, April 13, 2017 3:08 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Using the Refresh this PC in W-10 Good morning Jaws users list, I was finally able to get the refresh this PC, to work for me. I tried this feature out several times a year ago, I could not get it to work for me. But lo-and-behold, it worked this time. I chose to keep my files. So after waiting for 90 minutes or so, I was on the log-in screen. Of course the refresh feature removed more than 20 programs and apps on my computer including all Freedom Scientific products, all the Jaws versions, the F S reader and much more. The benefit of doing a refresh, it reloads the windows operating system files new and fresh. So I had to turn off all live tiles and remove them from start. I had to uninstall all unwanted apps. I had to turn off all the background apps that I did not want turned on. I had to install Jaws and put my authorization code back into the Jaws activate window. I had to download and set up my office 365 again, I had to set up my outlook 2016 email accounts again. LOL. But I believe this has fixed the issues I encountered after trying to manually update to the creators update and failing to do so. So hopefully with any luck, my computer will get updated to the creators update when it comes to my computer. I have learned my lesson, no more manually trying to update to the creators update, I will just wait. So if any of you decide to use this refresh your PC feature in W-10, know you will have to reinstall Jaws and much more. Read below and see what all was removed on my computer after I successfully completed the refresh my PC process. How would one go about getting one to read automatically? Awhile ago, I tried a practice run with a person trying to read for me, and they sometimes said words out of order or they stumbled on words. Some jobs have this as part of the assessment to apply, and I've never found a good way through it. The closest I've ever found was more like a tutorial thing that would artificially slow your rate by not registering beyond a mistake until you correct it, which wouldn't necessarily be comparable to what sighted people are doing. Windows 7 is until early 2020 as I recall, and with the market penetration of Windows 7, it wouldn't surprise me at all if it got extended as XP's life cycle got extended. Next year, we'll see Windows 10 get released. I assume the next release of Jaws will have the ability to work with the new features in Windows 10. It should be nicer, from what I've read, than Windows 8. So, you can always save money and use your current laptop and get something newer in a year or so that will support all the features of the newer Windows including touchscreen gestures; which would not be available at all on your older machine. GW Micro and Microsoft Corp. have partnered to make Window-Eyes available to users of Microsoft Office at no cost. Window-Eyes is a screen reader that enables people who are blind, visually impaired, or print disabled to have full access to Windows PCs and makes the computer accessible via speech and/or Braille. To better deliver Window-Eyes to the people who need it most, GW Micro and Microsoft have collaborated on this global initiative, available in over 15 languages, to enable anyone using Microsoft Office 2010 or later to also use Window-Eyes for free. As such, this initiative between GW Micro and Microsoft has the potential to reduce barriers for millions of people who are blind or visually impaired around the world. As the population ages, technologies like Window-Eyes will become more and more important as the number of people with age-related macular degeneration and other retinal degenerative diseases increases. Rather than wait for the world to change, Microsoft and GW Micro are leading the way," said Dan Weirich, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for GW Micro. Weirich believes this technology can help millions of people gain access to their PC, and that providing it free of charge will open a whole new world of assistive technology to many people. In light of the rapidly changing face of technology and specifically, the changing face of assistive technology, the combined efforts of GW Micro and Microsoft have the goal of providing accessibility to people who are blind and visually impaired for the long term. Microsoft continues to take accessibility seriously. Prefetch When you launch an application, Windows XP stores that information in a file called, prefetch. These files can accumulate over a period of time and will have some affect on the loading of Windows. It doesn't hurt to clean out this file from time to time and will not affect the operation of your PC to delete them. Go to the start menu and either arrow down to run or just type the letter R. When the edit box appears, type in: prefetch and press enter. You will have a list of applications that you have used since you have been using Windows XP. Simply do a control a to select all and then press your shift delete. If you just press delete, those files will go into the recycle bin, but adding the shift key will bypass it. Now say yes to, are you sure you want to delete these files. Finally press alt f4 to exit. 2. Disc Clean-up Whenever you surf the internet or download files, your PC stores information on the hard drive in a temp folder. There are other files included in the Disc Clean-Up which you probably would want to get rid of. Go to your start menu, then to All Programs, then Accessories, next to System Tools and finally to Disc Clean-Up and press enter. It might take a few minutes for it to open, depending on if it will compress old files. But once it does, you will probably be asked which Drive your want to clean. Select the C drive. Once this is selected, you will have a list of items that the disc clean-up will clean. These may include: Downloaded Internet Files Temp Internet Internet Files Off Line Web Pages Office Set-Up Files Recycle Bin Temporary Files Web Publisher Files Compress Old Files Catalogue Files As you down arrow through the list, you will notice that they may be checked or unchecked. If they are checked, this will clean that option when the next Button is pressed. I recommend checking everything with the exception of, compress old files. You only need to check this if your hard drive is getting Low on free drive space. After you have checked the files you want to clean, tab to next and press enter. You will be asked if you are sure you want to do this, just Press enter on, yes. It will take a few minutes, but when it is finished, you will be taken out of the Disc Clean-Up. --- *** Note. Make sure to add, space, before the ,/f. as indicated. 3. Check Disc The check disc should be performed before a scan disc is performed. To do this, go to the start menu and then to, run. When the edit box appears, type in: chkdsk /f and press enter. You will be presented with a dialogue that says, the check disc cannot be performed because the volume is in use. Would you like to perform this the next time your system starts? Just type the letter Y and press enter. Now you will need to shut down any open applications and restart your PC. When it begins to boot up and before Windows starts, your PC will perform a check disc. It will take a few minutes to perform, but when it is finished, Windows will start up normally. --- 4. Scan Disc Windows XP doesn't have an actual scan disc, but it does have something relatively close to it. To run scan disc, go to your desk top and then to, My Computer. If you aren't using the classic start menu, you might have to go to your start menu and then to My Computer there. Open My Computer and highlight your C drive, sometimes called, Local Disc C. Don't press enter, just highlight it. Now do an alt enter to bring up the properties. Next do a control tab to the Tools tab. You will be on, errors checking, check now button. Press your spacebar and it will say, Start Button, but don't press enter yet. Instead, tab to the check boxes and check, automatically fix files system errors and the next cheek box which is, scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Check both of the boxes. Now tab to the start button and press enter. You will be presented with a dialogue saying that the disc check cannot bhe performed because the disc check needs exclusive access to some files. Do you want to schedule a disc check the next time you start Windows? Just press your spacebar on yes. Now tab to OK and press enter. Alt f4 out of the properties and shut down any open applications and restart your PC. It may take as long as an hour for this process to complete, depending on the size of your hard drive and how many errors you have, but be Patient and Windows will restart once the process is complete. --- 5. In the Ease of Access Center go to, "Make it easier to focus on tasks", and hit enter. Re: [JAWS-Users] new laptop/jaws 13
Reese, Thank you for the help. Unfortunately it is stuck and I can not do anything, my husband can not do anything with the mouse, and the keys do nothing, so I am going to take it back to bestbuys and see what they can do. I do have rescue disk for it, but I was not sure if I should do that or not since it is new and just let the geek squad see if they can help with this. If Jaws works successfully after that, you have your answer. Should that be the case, try and uninstall the virus program and install your favorite one instead. Hope this helps! [JAWS-Users] new laptop/jaws 13
Good morning, My husband surprised me with a new hp pavilion 64 bit laptop. He bought a anti virus I am thinking it is web root not sure, it was already installed on the unit. Not really thinking I tried to install jaws 13 from the cd, halfway through it froze up, I shut off the computer, I thought the cd had a problem, the talking installed installed fine, when I got to set up it got stuck. So I download the jaws 13 64 bit from the website of freedom, it all installed fine I heard jaws talking and it ask to be restarted, well it started up fine, got to the desktop it is stuck, can not do nothing, no jaws and the mouse is stuck and my husband says it is not doing anything. Is it possible that jaws and this anti virus is clashing together. I use mse on my other units, but my husband did not know that. He bought it from best buys, we are planning on taking it back today to see if they can fix it. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
