Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 and Outlook 2016
David: Thanks for posting these instructions for eliminating the back stage view in Word 2016. Like others on the list, I had to do this when I first installed Office 365 on my current Windows 7 laptop, but couldn't remember enough about how to do it to send instructions to Miriam. I'm going to save these instructions for future reference, because I plan to purchase a new computer shortly with the Windows 10 operating system, and will have to install Office 365 from Scratch. David, I would certainly appreciate some help. Let me first explain where I am at this point. There are 2 messages in my inbox that would have ordinarily have gone to my , to Miriam, folder. So perhaps I solved that problem. I'm not sure. When I attempted to follow your directions for getting directly to a word document, the file menu would not open with alt F. I did eventually get a new document to open, but just by tabbing around. I didn't even get to anything that said, "open new document". I can't access all of the emails that are still in my "to Miriam" folder. I would appreciate your help. I live on Long Island. I'm 80 years old. My hearing isn't that great and I'm not good at this stuff. But I would be happy to call you, or you can call me, if that's convenient. Miriam, It sounds as though someone created a "message rule" for your email so that it goes to that defective folder. You can delete that rule. Try the following: Place focus in a message list next to a message where your name is in the "To" line. Press the applications key, which is between the right-hand Windows and control keys. Arrow down to "Rules submenu." Press enter. Tab until you hear "Manage rules and alerts..." Press the spacebar here. Tab again until you hear "Delete." Once again, press the spacebar. I just went through these steps to make sure they work. However, since I don't want to remove any of my existing rules, I couldn't go further. I suggest you keep tabbing from there in case there's an "Apply" button. If there is, press the spacebar on it. either way, resume tabbing to the Okay button. I hope you can follow these steps and that they solve this part of your email problem. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List On Behalf Of Miriam Vieni Sent: Sunday, April 22, 2018 9:32 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 and Outlook 2016 George, Someone set up the "to Miriam" folder for me. What I would like is for someone to tell me step by step how to undo my, "to miriam", folder, and to move what's there to my inbox so that I can read it and so that all my emails go to my inbox. That would solve one problem. I could receive and answer all my emails. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 and Outlook 2016
I was listening to Jaws while the disabilities tech was setting things up and I'm sure I heard pop 3. As for my internet service provider, that is Optimum and they are infamously unhelpful. But I will say that the last time I had multiple copies, I was using Outlook 2003, which I loved, and the multiple copies were a sign that it was corrupted. Since Microsoft no longer supported office 2003, I had to change to office 365. I would have stayed with 2003 forever if I could have. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 and Outlook 2016
Hi Miriam, I am using Windows 10, Office 365 and JAWS18. I had a somewhat similar issue but it was caused by the fact that I had a new computer and ended up on Dell's 90day free trial of Office Suite. It was terrible until I discovered that my Office 365 was not installed. Once we got that fixed things are working "normal" in my Outlook 2016. BTW-When I called Microsoft Accessibility line the tech solved HALF of my problem but not the rest. That is not altogether uncommon there. Then I called COX, my ISP provider where I pay for tech help, and that guy though willing solved nothing. Finally my son and I figured out the remaining issues and now all is well. George A. Hey. That's a really good question. I don't know. I have peeked around with these tools in Firefox a bit but never really got far. There are maybe a couple of people on this list who might know more. I'm usually all gung ho about firefox but I admit this isn't something I know much about. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Don Raikes Sent: January 28, 2018 6:11 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] jaws 18 and firefox 53 developer tools Hi, I need to use firefox to edit the html of a webpage on the fly. According to the firefox support site I should use the page inspector to do this. My challenge is to add a new option into a combobox. I can locate the combobox in the html by searching for the word option. If I right-click on the first option node and select duplicate from the context menu, I get a new entry in the lis (good so far). My problem comes in when I want to edit the value of the option. I select edit as html friom the context menu, and am placed in presumably an edit field, but I cannot see anything in the edit box. I have explored with the pc and jaws cursors but can't find the html tags to edit. Does anyone have any experience with this tool or know how to get it to work with jaws? Hi, I am just migrating from outlook 2007 to outlook 2017 due to company requirements. I am using a focus 40 blue display with jaws 18. When I am in the message list, the braille display does not show anything even though I have gone to the outlook settings (jaws key +f2 / customize outlook list) and made sure that the from, subject and message items are all set to be brailled. one thing. if you had to re install or upgrade jaws the shortcut key in the desktop will be replaced and that shortcut would also be erased and you would have to re create it again.; open a context menu on the jaws 18 icon. click on properties then tab to the shortcut edit box. if it is blank no shortcut has been defined. or maybe the person that set it up used other keys. if it is blank press j and it will fill it in with control alt j. tab to the o k button and save the changes. it might ask for your administrator password that you use to log on with before it will save it. if the keys are already there press the escape key to close the settings without saveing anything. *** there are a few ways to shut down jaws jaws windows f4 does not work without generating a error report most of the time. shift windows f4 doesn't do anything. if jaws has not crashed you can shut down with jaws f4 and press enter on the dialog. it defaults to the yes button. you can press jaws j to open a dialog and arrow up once to wrap to the exit button and press enter. if the desktop icon shortcut key is working you could press control alt j and it would open the same dialog screen and arrow up once to wrap to the exit button and press enter on it. -Original Message- From: Miriam Vieni Sent: Friday, August 04, 2017 6:49 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 I had the person who helped me set all this up, set up a hot key for Jaws, I thought, and that hot key doesn't work. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18
Hi Miriam, Selling your soul won't be necessary, hopefully! LOL Here's an explanation of the Jaws key, Windows key, + F4, keystroke, it is not a toggle. Also, steps for creating a shortcut keystroke:: From: "Paul Magill" < In some situations, when Jaws has crashed, or another process has crashed Jaws, you can use WindowsKey+JawsKey+F4 to shut down Jaws and all its associated processes, thus allowing it to be restarted in the usual way without rebooting. Note, it does not always work, but saves a lot of time when it does. This method also causes an error reporting file to be created, and if asked by FS support, can be emailed to them to assist in analysing the initial problem. Regards, Paul from Aust If you don't have a shortcut keystroke to restart Jaws once you have invoked the above keystroke, try the following to create one: 1. Go to the Desktop by pressing, Windows key + D, or Windows key + M. 2. Press the letter, J, until you have the JAWS icon highlighted. 3. Press, Alt + Enter, to open the JAWS icon Properties. When the JAWS icon properties opens you should be on the shortcut page. 4. Tab to the Shortcut key field, and type in the shortcut key combination of your choice, like Alt, Control, + J, or whatever other combination you prefer. 5. Tab to the, Apply, button, press the spacebar, tab around again to the, Okay, button, and press, Enter, to save the change & close. Now, when you press, Alt, Control, + J, or whatever shortcut key you assigned, JAWS should restart. Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers! Sent from my iBarstool. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 and PDF?
If you have Open Book you'll find that you'll seldom use Convenient OCR. You can read scanned and secure pdf's in Open Book as well as any other scanned material larger than a banner (convenient OCR may be better for small scans). You might want to make a short cut key for Open Book (I use O). To access scanned material just hit Control P and your printers will pop up..Open Book is your Freedom printer. Just click on the name and your doc will open in Open Book. JAWS will now work in Open Book, so you don't need to suppress JAWS. Open Book has a really good help section. Just use F6 to toggle. You may need no training to use it. Mike B. did a marvelous job of listing the preparations JAWS users need to make for Adobe DC (latest). You will need to use the accessibility wizard and to uncheck some items in the preferences tree. In adobe, just hit control K and the list will pop up. Go to enhanced scecurity and uncheck protected view. In the accessibility wizard you will also want to uncheck opening the pdf's in the browser. I particularly like reading a whole document, not page by page - even long documents. Most newer computers are fast enough to load even a 70 or so page pdf with some ease. Tehre are of course more detailed instructions to give but you may be aable to complete your pdf orientation with the above suggestions.) On 7/22/2017 8:17 PM, Michele Thredgold wrote: Hi everyone. not sure if it has changed because I had version 8, but if you saved the pdf to your computer. and with the pdf document opened, just activate the print command then choose print with freedom import printer and after printing is finished the document will showup in OpenBook. I would assume it is the same if the document is on the web! -Original Message- From: Michele Thredgold Sent: Saturday, July 22, 2017 4:17 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 and PDF? Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 and PDF?
The Convenient OCR feature is available since JAWS 13, and capability of recognizing PDF documents independently of screen resolution was added in JAWS 15. I don't remember, however, if Freedom Scientific release the update for fixing this functionality in Adobe Acrobat Reader DC (not to be confused with Adobe Reader nor the even older Adobe Acrobat Reader) for JAWS 16 too. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Adrian Spratt Sent: Tuesday, July 11, 2017 5:08 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 and PDF? Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 and PDF?
Hi agree with you, George. When a document is a book or is a bit longer than a single short article, I prefer to use more advanced OCR programs like FineReader. In addition to copying text to Word, in Windows 10 from the Results Viewer window you can press CTRL+P and, in the Print dialog, select the Microsoft Print to PDF printer. Unlike PDFs created by Word this built-in printer does not include structuring tags for accessibility, but actually documents are very accessible anyway. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of George Martinez Sent: Tuesday, July 11, 2017 5:14 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 and PDF? Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 and PDF?
Generally speaking, JAWS reads PDF files, provided they are created properly. The structure of the document has to include proper tags and other accessibility considerations, so that screen readers are able to read the information. Scanned images are most likely not going to be read by a screen reader, unless you perform some type of OCR, (Optical Character Recognition). This functionality is already built into JAWS. Certainly, in some cases, this works well, but in others, it is not ideal. For example, if you're trying to fill out paperwork that was sent to you as a scanned image, chances are, this will not work for you very well at all. While JAWS may read to you the information, you probably won't be able to determine where you should put requested informationlike your name, phone number etc. onto the document, if you can edit it at all. I have seen JAWS read documents that were not properly tagged for accessibility, and other times it doesn't read the file at all. It really depends on the type of file you're trying to read with Adobe, and what type of accessibility considerations were included by the author of said file. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Vicky Vaughan Sent: Tuesday, July 11, 2017 3:23 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 and PDF? A few times, when closing the streaming site and unmuting JAWS speech, JAWS has not come back up talking, and no Braille either. I have been able to get NVDA up and running, using SAPI5, and Kurzweil 1000; but no JAWS. To get JAWS running again, I had to shut down and restart the computer, because no unloading/reloading JAWS worked. I am now using Eloquence in Internet Explorer, and have no problems. The problem only happened between the latest JAWS and SAPI5 in Internet Explorer; not in previous JAWS. -Original Message- From: Geno Stone Sent: Sunday, January 22, 2017 3:31 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 18 LATEST I once a week go to NVDA to keep my skills it. Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws 18 and outlook 2016 not getting along.
So, what kind of add-ins would Outlook have? To my knowledge I have never added anything to Outlook 2010. I have considered upgrading to 365 2016 but based on some things I read hesitate to do so, including the fact that I might lose all my contacts, completions etc. I would like to add my Google account but, Google tells me my e-mail client is too old, had it on until my disk drive died and everything was reconfigured by repair person. I get that mail via my iPhone but would prefer to be able to answer any of it on the computer. Matthew, I spoke too soon, I was working in my Word 2016 this morning Writing a article to post on Facebook. After getting done with, Posting and out of Facebook, went to close Word and not save the word 2 page document, Jaws locked up big time. I had to shut down and restart, came back fine and trial and error, I did another word document and using F7 for spelling again and closed out, Jaws was fine. Not sure what and why that happen. But if it doesn't work, then we'll have to try something else. But once I name the new document, I can switch back and forth without a problem. Does what you describe with Word 2016 happen after you've named the newly opened document? -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of r...@q.com Sent: Friday, December 23, 2016 11:28 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 18 and MS Word 2016 document focus problem Hi, I am running JFW 18, Windows 10, and MS Word 2016. When I open a document when another document is already open I have a lot of trouble getting Jaws to focus on the newly opened document. Jaws+T says that I am in the new document. However, Jaws will not read the document and focus returns to the previous document. Sometimes I can move the Jaws cursor to text in the newly opened document and route the PC cursor to the Jaws cursor. However, this only works part of the time. Sometimes I can resolve the problem by alt-tabbing to another program and then alt-tabbing back to the newly opened document. But, again, this works only part of the time. Sometimes I can resolve the problem by restarting Jaws. I have tried going back to the default user settings (control+spacebar, Z). That does not resolve the problem. Does anyone have any ideas?
