Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws with Windows xp mode in Windows 7
If it's me then yes I do use XP in a different environment and yes JAWS does work well with it. The environment I use is VMware and it is more responsive than the XP Mode provided by Microsoft. The good news is that if XP Mode is already installed you can import the virtual machine into VMware so you have a somewhat similar but more responsive experience with XP Mode. Hi so long as you have at least 2GB of RAM and a 2GHZ processor XP Mode should run fine without problems. Hi Chris. A couple of questions. firstly, do you have any more details on the windows7 list how to subscribe etc? Secondly, what do you mean by terminal session? Virtual PC is just running XP in a virtual environment much as VMWare would surely? or is XP being directly controled by windows 7 i.e you're still using windows 7 but with the xp backend? i hope this makes sense i just didn't understand your terminology, virtual terminal verses terminal... Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws with Windows xp mode in Windows 7
Hi Mo, To join the Windows 7 list send a blank message to blindwindows7-subscr...@yahoogroups.com. Now, from what I understand, XP Mode comes with a set of tools and drivers so that it runs better with Virtual PC and provides automatic logging onto the guest operating system. The other thing it does is to behave as if it's running in a terminal (remote desktop) session. It is this behaviour that is confusing JAWS and thus you cannot currently run JAWS in XP Mode, unless you use some other XP Mode implementation like there is in VMWare. Hope this helps. Not always true since there is a home and pro version of XP. Like I said earlier to somebody else look on the jaws window under help and about. Everything you need to know is in there. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws with Windows XP mode in Windows 7
Hello Don, Although JAWS might not work too well in XP mode of Windows 7, the Windows 7 compatibility wizard might take care of most older programs that won't normally work in Windows 7. If you type run programs made for earlier versions of Windows (without the quotes in the start menu search box you can start the compatibility wizard. Chances are good that if you just type run programs that the first choice in the results will be for starting the wizard. Press enter on the choice. Tab to the next button and press enter. You might need to wait a few seconds for the list to populate. One of the choices in the list will be for not listed. If you use that choice you will then be able to browse for the program. I have used the compatibility wizard for a reading program that was bundled with other software that worked in Windows 7. The bundled reading program didn't work in Windows 7, but when choosing to use settings for XP SP3 with the compatibility wizard the program worked well. An alternative to using the compatibility wizard is to modify the properties of the program's shortcut. Use Alt+enter key on the shortcut icon and then use CTRL+tab to move to the compatibility page of the dialog box. You can choose to run in 256 colors, 640 x 480 resolution, and you can pick an earlier operating system with which the program was compatible. You can also disable display scaling on high DPI. There is also a button to run the same settings for all users and a checkbox for running the program as an administrator. You will have to respond to a UAC prompt every time you run the program. If you have some vision and if older programs give fuzzy results then go into the properties of the program, click compatibility tab, and then select disable display scaling on high DPI settings. Take care. Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws with Windows XP mode in Windows 7
Ok well was trying to install Partition magic is why was wanting to use this mode since it's not compatible with Win 7 or even Win vista; but, wasn't able to install the program. So do I need to go into windows xp mode first then run the program from the setup.exe or install file of Partition magic to make it work? I was able to view the win xp mode screen when first clicked on the icon until changed the display option think it was and then had no speech. So guess this mode isn't going to be compatible with any screen readers? Will check out the help info too to see what can do. Many thanks for your tips and or suggestions. Hey Don, Partition Magic won't work in Vista or Windows 7, according to Norton. It hasn't been updated in five years, from what I've seen. I am sure it won't work in 64-bit systems. You can try http://www.partitionwizard.com/free-partition-manager.html which works in 32-bit or 64-bit systems. Don't know how accessible it is, though. Also, Win 7 has its own partitioning software which should be accessible through the disk management aplet. Take my advice, I don't use it anyway. Unfortunately, it is not possible to use JAWS in a Windows XP mode environment. Virtual PC creates a terminal session by default, and JAWS doesn't understand that it's not actually a terminal session; rather a virtual terminal session created by Virtual PC. As a result JAWS thinks you're trying to run it in a terminal session, and therefore will not work and instead display an error message and quits. For the record, other screen readers work, but this is outside the scopes of this list. Sorry about that.
